/SdCard/Android/Data not showing files via PC - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I never noticed until now, but when connecting my S3 to my PC via MTP, it does not display all the files in the /SdCard/Android/Data folder. All other folders seem fine. I'm going to completely wipe / format the phone and there are a few things I want to backup (some games data etc.).
I use Titanium Backup with the option to always backup external data, but I've found that it doesn't backup everything and then I have to re-download the data for some games.
I've tried SDRescan from the Play Store, I've enabled hidden files etc, nothing works yet. Interesting that any files I manually copy there are always displayed.
Btw, running UltimaRom 7.2 (I doubt this is ROM related).
What I do now to circumvent the issue is using X-plore to copy the files to the ext-sd then copy them off using the PC.
Any advise please?

You're not supposed to be able to access those files (Android security policy) and thus the phone blocks it. It would be able to hack the Mtp app to circumvent that limitation but it's probably easier to use the Smb app or others.

[Q] Newbie to Android on Samsung Ace, help required.

Hello!
I am a newbie to Android just migrated from a Symbian. I own a Samsung Ace, and also plan buying an Xperia Play.
When installing an application in symbian the phone asks if we want to save it in the memory card or the internal memory. How do we do this in Android phones and specifically (if it is different for every phone) in Ace and Play?
For example I installed talking tom cat 2 in Ace, the moment I opened it asked my permission to install another package, only once that was installed I was able to use the application. Then after sometime I uninstalled the app. using task manager. But the question is how do I get rid of the extra package and where has it been installed any ways.
There is no place where this information is available for a newbie.
Android at first seems a little confusing.
Also what is this ROM thing, tried to search it but didn't find anything?
Please reply soon.
Thanks.
Everything, go to settings>applications>manage applications. This should be uniform across android devices.
Normally downloaded data goes to sdcard/Android/data. Check in dis directory.

Like mentioned in the prev post it might either be in /sdcard/android/data or in the appropriate folder names under /sdcard
In your case, i think a folder named "talking tom" might be created under /sdcard
Your mishandled/broken files would be in /sdcard/LOST.DIR

installed data goes to your system/data, what the hell are you talking about?! You mean if I take out my sd all apps mysteriously disappear?

If the app is installed in SD card then for sure it wont work when u remove the SD card.
When you uninstall an app the folders and files particular to that app in /system/data would get removed automatically and the files n folders on those in SD card needs to be removed manually.
Correct me if im wrong, Thanks.
PS: Im not in for any argument and happy to correct myself

ur actually correct. any leftover on sdcard wont be remove by default when uninstalling particular app that created them. eg many games will download its data when running it for the first time, and that data will be placed on sdcard. furthermore that data wouldnt be deleted when we uninstall that particular game that creating it, it need to be removed/deleted manually. i think same goes in op case, that "talking tom" app download its data when on first run and put it in sdcard.
Okay, I see the logic now. OP mentioned installing an additional package and that's probably not an app but just data, am I correct? Sorry for getting too heated up

You mean normally the applications we install like facebook, twitter, talking tom cat 2, angry birds etc. etc. go directly to the SD-Card ?????
I thought, in Androids, it goes to the internal memory.
Because a friend of mine said that the only reason people still opt for iphones instead of android is this; that you can't enjoy the use of an SD-Card.

Okay.
But my question is : Can I somehow install the application (like tom cat) directly in the Sd-Card in the first place. I am not worried about removing my card, because I have a 32 gb one.

Hello!
Thanks for the reply.
But I don't think this is the ROM they are talking about on this website. The one you mentioned is Hardware. What they are discussing seems to be some type of software.
It's called read-only memory. It's like your xp in your computer, or windows 7, or Linux.
Edit: some applications cannot be installed into the sd card but with darktremor a2sd script it can make most apps migrate a portion of its space to the ext partition of the sd card. Do a search on google about a2sd. Also, installed data normally goes to /data/app which is internal storage. Certain apps may move their data to the .asec folder in the sd.

formatted emmc by mistake

Hi all, was trying to format another memory card that i have because it would not read in windows for some reason,so anyway i inserted into my phone and formatted emmc thinking it was this other card but turns out i wiped almost everything from my phone(backups, music, pics) everything!! is there no way of retrieving anything, thanks in advance!!
Recuva might be able to recover data that's in folders you can normally see when you hook the phone up to a PC (I.E not in system folders). A Google search also reveals Android specific data recovery apps tho I can't vouch for those.

Why Titanium backup did not backup big games data?

Helli friends, I am using titanium backup 6.0 2. I had create backup of all users apps but after I restore it after flashing new rom I noticed that it missed data folders of my big games like modern combat 4, gta vice city, ravensword. Games apps was asking me to re download data again which I bought from play store. I searched about this but found no solution. Had I made any mistake?
Sorry for my bad english.

Its normal, I guess titanium does not backup the data from the sd's games folder. Happens to me to, anyway you will be able to restore your safe games without problem.

You need t to copy the folder with games data file (the downloaded one) not sure if it is in that fleet you mentioned but you can try.

every game has a different folder, and titanium is not supposed to back it up
But it should do bcoz it is difficult to backup separately data files of games agaun and again for flashing new roms

This is one of the things you will have to get used to when flashing roms. As Games keep their info all over the place and with each update the place it gets stored is not always the same. So no it is not supposed back those up.
The titanium backs up, but it just makes it interesting to know how and other parts, as can happen when the program or game update specify that part will not change. Sorry if my english sucks.
I tried too many times but answer is no. It only backup apk file of game not data and it is difficult to re download 1.5 to 2gb data again.i think clockwork recovery can do it but not sure. I will try it and if I get success I will post here.

no, recovery doesn't backup sdcard contents either
Ok it means there is only a way that we should copy data folder from /sdcard/android. But it is strange that when we uninstall the game it removes the data folder( even it is 1.5 gb) with apk. I hope titanium dev add this feature in next update.

I use directory bind to put my games /android/data/game.name/... (NOT ALL /data/ I actually list the games themselves) /android/obb.... /gameloft... folders on the extsdcard from the internal memory's sdcard. I can then backup using Titanium Backup (calling it TT from now) the games' "app and data" then I do the following:
I can flash a new rom,
login to play store/google
restore Directory bind, and enable its binds
install app ONLY using TT
run app and let it check for d/l's (NONE)
in TT kill app, clear data then restore data.
This process works on all my "big" games asphalt 6/7 dark knight GTA:3 dead space etc etc
o and FYI TT already has the feature to backup the external data, but i think its disabled by default (or on a low setting) Its called "backup app external data" in preferances and also the one below sets the size. I have it backup external data if its less than 32mb. presumably you could set to to always and it'd do it, or you could setup a label for your "big" games and have it done like that. I will however say i have not used this feature for backing the games sdcard data, I use the first method.
Thanks for reply. I think it is amazing solution to backup big games data without hassle. I will try it. However I am using link 2 sd in s3 i9300. It works but not for big games data. I have a question that will directory bind work in galaxy s3 bcoz it has no support for move 2 sd.

Firstly Directory Bind (DB) isnt perfect. It can crash and cause the game to crash. However that said I completed maxpayne for example on my phone without a single crash. Second DB doesn't work on 4.2 ROMs apparently (not bothered to test that as im still on 4.1 for now)
Now the thing to remember is that, I HAVE MANUALLY COPIED THE GAME FILES FROM THE INTERNAL TO THE EXTERNAL! I let each app install onto the internal (months and months ago) then moved the files myself to the extsdcard as DB's copy feature is unreliable to say the least. Once the binds are setup, you never need to move anything again, as all NEW data will be sent to the extsdcard.
ALSO if you are using link to sd, doesn't that mean you internal sdcard is ALREADY directed to the extsdcard? so DB would be useless?
In Titanium Backup, Go to Preferences>Backup app External data (It's under Backup Settings) and set it to Enabled(Always)
In my case, this method saved everything needed from the Android/data folder but it did not save the Android/obb folder.
EA Real Racing 3. After backing up and restoring into a new ROM, the game worked flawlessly, my progress was saved and I didn't have to download everything inside the game again. App size was 1.34 GB. While the archive size was around 850MB in the TitaniumBackup folder. But it was probably compressed, and restored everything.
I think this just saves the Android/data folder, it did not save the Whatsapp Media. Thankfully, I had backed up the Whatsapp folder just in case, and i just pasted it back into the Internal SD Storage.
I had even formatted my InternalSD(it was getting too cluttered) while flashing the new ROM. On the previous ROM I was at around 1 GB free... and after the restore in the new ROM and copying of the folders back to Internal I had some 5 GB free. I obviously lost some data, probably from the Android/obb(My guess, around 1 GB game data), but the rest was probably junk that needed cleaning up anyways, since I was back to how it was in the previous ROM.
So, to summarize, while jumping from ROM to ROM doing Full Wipes(or even Format Internal SD), while making your backup you should backup all external data via Titanium, and then copy relevant folders outside the Android/data folder to your backup location and just paste them back after you've restored from Titanium.
Hope this helps.
Oh, by the way, don't be noob enough to not change the TitaniumBackup folder to your external before starting anything.
Titanium backup data take more space than other.

Just rooted and installed CM10 - can I restore app data from Kies?

Hi,
I made a full backup into Kies in case anything went wrong, but realistically knew that anything I would want would already be backed up (contacts to Google, photos to Dropbox) - but I just realised I completely forgot about my girlfriend's 'The Curse' save data!
I'm running CM10 and have connected my phone to Kies, but it just says "Connecting" - I guess there's no way to restore using the app?
Where would I transfer app data from to restore it back to the phone?
Thanks

I might be wrong, but it would surprise me if Kies would work with a rooted phone (whatever ROM you are using) for the restore feature.

Damn.... thank you (I've made a huge mistake!)
In the Samsung folder on my local backup I have a file called com.toystudio.thecursefree-1.apk
Is it like iOS where I can copy the entire APK file to my phone (to which location?) and it'll copy my save data too?

the .apk usually is only the app itself. Maybe there is some way to open the KIES backup and extract the data file?
You could maybe try this one in the temp folders?
Thanks chris
Once u root your phone and use any custom ROM, Kies will not detect your phone...

No write access on sd-cards

Hey there!
I have a I9300 and a I9305 and I don't have write access on my sd-cards. I tried both phones, different cards...so I guess it is s software problem. The only place where I can create or delete files and folders on them is in TWRP. No app, with or without root, can write on it under a running Android. But I can connect it to the pc and copy files on it which I can read then. But no writing. I did an update as always with a clean flash. Flashed only system gapps and root (tried magisk and SuperSU). On the 9300 it's exactly the same thing! Old ROM was RR, January also. Everything worked fine. No write access on new ROMs. I tried several ROMs (RR, LOS, AICP) on both phones but it's always the same.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Check the apps permissions within apps manager and make sure they have the permission set to allow access to storage.
You could try the sd fix.
Check to see if you can read/write/delete a file from /data/media/0/. It is just another way of accessing the internal sd without the excessive permissions.

Sorry, forgot to mention: Of course I did that.
Sadly to no effect. :|
I edited with other ideas too..
Have you tried browsing the developer settings?.
Have you ever reset the permissions from recovery? (don't actually do it, just answer the question!).
Have you tried the internal file browser?. If that doesn't work you have permissions problems. You'll need to flash a stock firmware and start over.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Thank you! I searched for it and found this thread. Version 1.9 worked perfectly except for one reboot when I first tried to create a folder on the sd card. But after the restart it worked for apps, too.
Only new thing is, I can see the sd card twice. One is named "Media Card" and the other one is an XXXX-XXXX-like name. Numbers and letters mixed. But who cares.
You are very welcome!. Enjoy!.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Hey..I'm back. :|
The problem has expanded somehow. I had access to the sd card but many apps couldn't access the internal storage. for example whatsapp and threema were not able to access any media file or even restore backups. and another app couldn't record an audio file. So I made a backup from everything and installed the stock rom again. After rooting and flashing a custom rom I thought the problem was gone since I could create folders with the built in file manager. But now it's the same problem again and FX File Explorer can't get any access to internal or external SD, same with all the apps. Only thing with access is the internal file browser. But to restore backups in some apps I need access and I can't even play media files or anything on the internal or external card...something is wrong here. The fix I tried before only helped with the external card but not the internal storage. Any idea what could be the problem?
Just tested: If I send a Video to that phone over WhatsApp for example it show the preview picture but when I try to open it WA says "cannot play media". Pictures seem to work in WA and Threema (it's kind of like WhatsApp), Audio Message works n WA not in Threema and videos don't work anywhere.
Do you have busybox installed?. Can you create a new file in /data/media/0?
Beamed in by telepathy.
Hey
Yes, busybox was installed at all tries. Always installing it first before anything else (TB etc.)
I could create any folder with TWRP and the internal file browser. FX always had a "No access" warning and couldn't even list the items. Except I applied the above mentioned sd-fix. But the other apps still had problems I mentioned. No access to media in WA and so forth.
I just tested and everything works when I'm using stock rom. Does that help?
With the internal file manager it is no problem at all to create folders.
I have to enable the "KitKat SD Workaround" in FX to be able to write folders instead of the sd-fix, but then it works too.
The problem is definitely permissions related.
You didn't answer whether you can create a new "file" in /data/media/0 when using the custom rom. A text file will do. Use fx to create the file.
