[Q] Proper process to root and unlock bootloader? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm currently reverting back to stock as I got the nice little screen telling me that Verizon Wireless didn't like my unauthorized software.
I was looking through, but I didn't see much more than the rooting via Odin.
What is the best way to root and unlock my phone so this doesn't happen again?

Sounds like you need to Odin back to stock then follow Adams guide on unlocking the boot loader you will also gain root in the two part process.

you wouldn't happen to have a link to Adam's Guide, would you?

Thanks, only now I'm only booting into the Teamwin recovery. I'm going to guess that I have to install a ROM now, but didn't see that as a step listed, and, well, quite frankly don't want to have to start over again because I flashed something I shouldn't have...
Is that what I need to do now? flash a stock rooted rom in recovery? Or did it all get screwed up again?

No that is right you are now ready to flash a rom it all went well if you ended uo with twrp.

You should probably back up first. To do this you need to go into recovery (twrp or clockwork mod). You can get to recovery by powering off the phone and holding volume-up+home+power. Now go to backup and restore back up. If you have an external sd I would recommend selecting the option to backup to it.
After that select a rom you want. If you want stock rooted you dont have to flash anything. Look in your app drawer if you see an app called supersu or super user you're rooted. If you want another rom follow these steps to flash it.
1. Read rom thread for known bugs so you know what youre getting into.
2. Download rom. DO NOT UNZIP.
3. Check md5 sum.
4. Move to external or internal sd where you can find it.
5. Boot into recovery.
6. Select install.
7 navigate to rom file.
8. Swipe to install. If it has aroma follow instructions if not wait for it to do its thing.

Can't boot into clockwork recovery

Ok so i downloaded rom manager and selected the top option flash clockworkmod recovery and picked my phone ( im already rooted by using the one step click root) and then i picked install rom from SD card and picked my room (which is Bi-winning v3) and my phone turned off and rebooted and went into the samsung recovery screen i tried to reinstall packages but gave me a error , i even tried the "all clockworkmod" recoveries and no luck same thing happens boots me up to the samsung recovery.
Does any one know what am doing wrong or what i can do to fix this problem?? thanks in advance and im still on my stock android os have't changed anything.
First, you need to start with a clean SD card. Then, open ROM Manager, flash cwr etc. etc. When it is finished downloading, power off the phone and reboot into recovery. From there (this is where the clean SD card is needed) then hit "reinstall packages, then hit reboot. This should bring up the iconic green text. reply if there are any problems.

Is not very clear to me. Did you flash your phone previously? have you done ODIN, kies, etc? have you tried this?

-ODIN to stock
-go here> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1157002 and download the link in the EDIT: POSSIBLE FIX (put this on root of internal SD)
-Re-install packages through stock recovery.
For some reason Rom Manager is not flashing CWR right. I couldn't get it to stick for hours. Just kept rebooting into normal load.
Follow the instructions above and you should be good to go. The 1.72mb update.zip should give you root and CWR

Im not sure how to use odin and what does it do ?? and i read the the topic you linked and seems like im not the only one having problems
Just download that update.zip he referenced (that I put there), and flash it.. instead of using Rom Manager.
it will root and install CWR for you.
I need to update my guides.

i highly suggest you learn how to use ODIN in the Vibrant Bible. If you're doing anything that has to do with rooting and flashing your phone, be sure you know how to revert back to stock. You WILL NEED TO at some point or another or find out what if feels like to own a brick.

[Q] No recovery

I really need help. I unlocked my bootloader through htcdev.com and I flashed clockworkmod then I installed a rooted stock rom. then I installed rom manager and it made me flash clockwork mod again to use it so I did that. Now every time I try to boot into recovery I get the htc white splash screen for about 20 seconds then the phone reboots and I get no recovery. Anyone that has any idea on how to help please do so I am really lost here.
Go into the phone settings under power and uncheck fastboot....that should help

I would forget about using rom manager for now, just flash stuff manually in recovery. You're going to need to reflash your clockwork recovery, the one that was meant to be flashed with the htcdev.com unlock method. Also, I believe I saw someone post a TWRP that had been modified to work with the htcdev.com unlock method as well, so you could also search for that. Just download a PG86IMG.zip of the recovery you'll use, place it on your sd card, and then boot to the bootloader to flash the recovery. After that, you should be able to get back into recovery and restore a nandroid or flash a rom and start fresh.

Thank you for the help, I would hate to be a pain about it, but can you possibly point me to a walkthrough or tell me how to do that. Thus far I have only used walkthroughs on all of this stuff I am kinda shooting in the dark here.

[Q] Is there a CWM flashable file to get back TWRP?

I was only wondering if this was available since we can't flash recovery images on the opposite recovery. I have made a recovery image in TWRP but have not gone so far to not just flash CWM and make a recovery image that will serve as my new point zero. Just curious since I only saw flashable CWM.

the link you gave to TWRP recovery was exactly what i was looking for. In the TWRP website they have a flashable option for TWRP to use in whatever existing recovery you have, that is CWM for us. Under droidstyle's guide (there's the thread also in dev section too for CWM) there is also a link for flashable CWM so now im set.
Although you already found what you were looking for, you can also download/run the goo manager app, press menu->install open recovery script. That will install TWRP.

I was hoping this way would let me get out but Ive now lost any custom recovery while in paranoid android. So what i did was while in Jelly Beans rom is flash CWM recovery to then flash Paranoid. I then decided to go back to beans, and i tried to flash TWRP zip that i has to restore my recovery. That failed an i have no recovery. I only have android system recovery <3e>. I am currently trying the goo manager to get me back, but so far i dont think im doing it right ill keep trying.
...So with goo manager i cant flash back to beans, i cant flash CWM back on, and ive: installed open recovery script to to install the TWRP img file but it must not have worked, but i cant see anything to indicate not.
Ok so im am stuck with just the stock recovery. In goo manager it says the recovery was installed but if is reboot to recovery its just crappy old boring stock and if i try to flash anything from goo manager it just reboots to that same stock recovery. Anyone know how to get a custom recovery back?

The TWRP in goo manager is not the correct one for our phone. I did the same thing and ended up in the same position as you. I used the suckitverizon file from Adams thread and odined it back on to the phone. If was in that position now I would use the newly released tool kit.
Good luck.

Im downloading the toolkit now but in the meantime did you have to restart the whole process in the 3 step bootloader unlock or did you just start at flashing suckitverizon version 2 in odin? Im just wondering how safe that is.

No I did not have to start over. If I recall correctly, I put the suckit file in the pda box and hit start. You can read up on it in Adams main thread and I know there were a few other people in the same fix.
Good luck
Toolkit saved my bacon. Many lessons learned. so if i want to restore an image in twrp say from paranoid then i use cwn to flash to a rom that plays nice with twrp then flash twrp back then recover in twrp. Now if i get stuck the toolkit has the correct twrp and cwm for the verizon note ii.
spoke too soon i though at least getting cwm was all good. However the toolkit wont install TWRP which is what i have my backups made on. i followed all the step on screen and selected sch-i605 to be flashed in odin. I can only reboot into stock recovery afterwards. :crying:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051992 This has been asked (by me) and answered (by awesome folks with more sense than me).
ok it all over. CWM can be had by flashing zip in twrp or through tool kit. twrp i only regained by odining again the suckitverizon from Adam's unlockbootloader thread.

Noob here : stupidly deleted Beans zip

Ok so go easy on me please. I hadn't slept in two days ! so I was in the process of reloading Beans but when I was backing up and wiping this and that I stupidly decided to wipe internal and external SDs so I wiped my beans rom zip and so I can install it or anything. I am able to get to the TWRP. Is it a matter of just loading the zip to my microsd and installing it that way ? Please tell me it is . Also is there a way if I did this again to boot the note 2 normally so I can access the internet to download the zip that way or it doesn't work that way with android ? Thanks so much for all your help !!!
Sorry. I meant to say I can't install it
If you can get your micro sd card into your computer, via card reader or old phone, download your rom onto that. That's probably the easiest route. For the future, it's a great idea to keep a nandroid backup saved on your hard drive for times like these.
Did you format system? If not then yes your phone will turn on normally. If you did as the last guy said download to your computer and in twrp i believe there is an option to use your phone as storage or just grab a card reader. Basically just get it in your micro sd somehow then flash normally.

Ok initially I was able to boot into YWRP but after I downloaded the Beans rom to my microsd card and tried to flash it on my phone It would not flash at all and now it won't even boot to TWRP. It's stuck on ODIN mode and I was unable to unlock bootloader and see if I can then get into TWRP. Was that not necessary ? Is my only alternative now to get my phone back to stock ? If so how do I do that exactly ? I really need help I'm sorry !

Sent from my DARK Note 2
Ok omg I did that but now after I root and unlock the bootloader when I try to flash Beans rom 7 which is on my microsd it says failed and it says it can't read zip. Last time I flash beans rom I believe it was on my internal. Should it matter and if not what can I do to fix this ? Also isn't there a way to root and unlock the bootloader but not have to flash a rom but instead reboot back so the phone is useable and not on the TWRP screen ? Thanks !!
I'm sorry for all the questions. It's just frustrating to have done it right the first time then mess up and get it working to a point than cant complete the fix. I have it back to stock but why is it when I try to root it with either version of odin it passes and seems to work but I don't see SU and I don't have root as ive tested it by opening free version of titanium back up. No root. Also after returning stock I can download the paid version of titanium back up but there is no link to open it ? omg
Sorry I should have said I can't download it. It acts like its downloaded but no link to open it appears in the play store screen nor does it appear anywhere on the phone
I'd just try this method of rooting if your back to stock or is this the one you used ??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
These are the steps I did. Sorry am reviewing to see if it's the same as I type
Step 1. Turn your Verizon Note 2 power off. Then hold down the Volume Down, Center Home, and the Power buttons simultaneously for about 3 seconds until you see a warning screen.
Step 2. Next, hit Volume Up to enter ODIN Download Mode and connect a microUSB cable from your phone to computer.
Step 3. Download the root-injected stock firmware and ODIN:
Download root-injected system firmware for Verizon Galaxy Note 2
Download ODIN
Unzip both files, you should get a file ending in “tar.md5″ and two files for ODIN.
Step 4. Run the odin3 v1.85.exe program by double-clicking on it.
Step 5. You should see a yellow highlighted box with a random COM number. If you don’t, install Samsung USB drivers and repeat from Step 1.
Choose “PDA” and select the root-injected firmware file ending in “tar.md5″.
Step 6. Hit the “Start” button and ODIN will start flashing the root-injected system firmware to your Verizon Note 2.
Step 7. When done successfully, you will see “PASS!”.
just go to the link i posted and watch video and read it's incredibly easy from the looks of it. it should root unlock and install twrp. especially if you somehow took the OTA
But if we could can we go back to my previous questions. I was able to unlock bootloader and I believe root it in one process and I got to the TWRP screen but when I try to go to install and I choose the beans rom on my microsd it says failed then in small print it says can't read zip file. Do I need to do something different or is there a fix to this problem ? Last time when I was successful I believe my rom was downloaded directly from my phone. And if it was is there a way to root/unlock bootloader but reboot back to where the phone is useable and flash a rom at a later time ? Thanks for all your patience and help !

You probably have a bad download. If you're on twrp then you're unlocked already. Re download beans and try that one.
By the way you should be able to boot normally after following the unlock thread. All it does is unlock and change the recovery

Just boot back into recovery and install zip from sdcard. You MUST have already flashed a custom recovery to be able to do this, use Philz recovery etc.
Go read the guides in stickies, make sure you fully understand before you flash, otherwise you will brick your phone.

usually custom roms are all rooted. SuperUser might be moved to the Settings menu instead o app drawer, have a look.
