Our development.. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Why is there so much more development in the other carriers (att) then ours (verizon)?

Probably because VZW just got the Note 2 less than a month ago and the bootloader was unlocked about three weeks ago. Other carriers have had the Note 2 for quite a bit longer.

Lulz, Aint that the truth.
Hopefully some other options get cooking for us soon.
Coming from the G Nexus where options were endless I'm having a tuff time satisfying my addiction.

lmao @ Slick!.. I'd love to see imo's lean kernel over here for our ASOP Roms.

I tried to let people know about something different coming and it was shut down. Guess people are happy with only a few options. Yes the gnex was awesome as far as options it was really limitless choices.

^This.
I just switched from T-Mobile & the HTC Sensation 4G a couple weeks after it came out (June 15th, 2011). It took about six months for development to really take off, and only recently (as in, the last few months - over a year since release) has CyanogenMod had stable releases of CM9. Nightlies for CM10 only came out last month.
Admittedly, Samsung devices have been getting much more attention that HTC devices from developers due to their popularity, but it'll still take time for our brand new device (it was released November 29th, recall) to get into enough developer's hands to start having lots of options. I think we can be confident that this will happen. Probably much quicker than any HTC device ever did.
In the meantime, we seem to be in much better shape than, say, the T-Mobile LG G2X (remember that device?). The stock software with that device - which was pretty much top-of-the-line when it was released - was nearly crippling. We have the best hardware out there and at worst adequate (I'd say more than adequate) software to tide us over until ROM developers unleash their magic.
I recommend patience - and maybe some encouragement to your favorite developer (in the form of financial support, that is - no ETA requests)!

Rezound OTA: June - July

Just a heads up. The end of July is 10 weeks, so let's hope its closer to June...

Aight coo
Did I just assume when I bought it that it would be in the first wave? Or did they actually say that when the Rezound was launched? I honestly can't remember.

Once again, I'll believe it when I see the OTA notification on my phone.

I'm getting really sick of this ****. It's been 6 months since ICS came out, and very, very few phones have ICS. It's embarrasing and starting to make me reconsider Android. I'm happy rooted and ROMed, but you shouldn't need to hack your phone to get updates.

If you want incessant updates that constantly disables jailbreak you're more than welcome to hit up ios.
I don't really see what the problem is other just impatience. People who don't do custom roms still have a perfectly useable phone on GB, and those who can't wait have a lot of extra options.

And look at the GNex. Six months after release and still on 4.0.2. If you have one of those you must really be steaming. What happened to the Google Experience?

Another thing I hate--false dichotomies. If I want updates iOS, if I want a bigger screen and openness, Android.
BS. It's possible to have both. If, for example, HTC had stuck to their hero device model and ONLY released a One X, S, and V, do you think updates would be difficult? Nope. It'd be easy.
Samsung? Well, updates would be easy too if they release a GSM GS3, a CDMA/LTE GS3 and a GSM/LTE GS3, but I'd guess by December we'll have the Galaxy S3 Skyrocket HD Supreme LTE 5G Maxxx.
Release fewer, better models. Easier software updates. Not hard. Not iOS.

I only half disagree with this. If it were up to HTC/Samsung/Google/etc. all the devices, more than likely, would be kept up to date, and in a somewhat timely fashion.
Look at the Verizon GNex. Do you think Google and Samsung don't have a working build of 4.0.4 on it? Sure they do. Verizon just isn't happy with it, for whatever reason. Same thing applies to 90% of phones in the US.
The international, unlocked versions of phones get the newer updates faster than their US counterparts, and the cell companies have a huge impact on that.
I'm not saying manufacturers and Google don't deserve some of the blame, because they do; they're pretty lazy and complacent in a way that Apple would never be. But I think Verizon is more at fault than any other party, and I'd like to see the cell companies get more heat than Google over this stuff lately.

I don't care about whether or not stock phones can get updates or not. The only point I'll start getting annoyed is when it starts becoming difficult to even ROM the phone. In our case, we don't have kernel source. In my world, that's the only real big issue with fragmentation: With so many different hardware configurations out and more and more proprietary software sprouting up (the plethora grows!), getting someone to create a stable ROM and maintain it becomes ever harder.
All this choice is good for people with different things in mind and even though ICS is the business, Gingerbread (IMO) is still pretty sweet. Stock Gingerbread, that is. But boy, now we're having a hard time getting kernels made, the number of devices we have are definitely starting to outpace the number of developers with the time on their hands, etc.
Really you guys don't see a problem with it taking so long to get updates? I know I do. So maybe we will have an update in 6-8 weeks and kernel source in 8-10 that's great. I often wonder what HTC does all day. Must be a pretty laid back place to work.

I'm sick of these "announcements". Not because of not having ICS (because we do) but the amount "announcements" we have had that were bull****.
Yea but most of these "announcements" have obviously been fake. I don't recall HTC ever putting anything out saying when they would roll updates out. I could be wrong though as I haven't given it too much attention

only 10 weeks...this puts how short the summer is into perspective. i think ill sit back and try to stop obsessively checking the forums for nebulous ics updates and enjoy the summer. hell we worry more about it then some devs do
The problem is, is that if the upgrade is slated to hit at the end of July, it'll be August possibly before we get kernel source since it usually takes like two weeks for source to release.
We don't get updates because of device/carrier fragmentation. Each level of choice is an opportunity for the manufacturer or carriert to differentiate their product or service. This is necessary to be competitive with its industry rivals and to continue to grow sales, thus making shareholders happy. It becomes difficult to allocate resources to support such a wide range of hardware apps and carrier specific needs, so the choice has to be made, which device to support. Then it becomes a question as to, support for which user base will benefit the company most. But this always come behind pushing the newest product, as support is an expense which only produces goodwill. That being said they almost always promise that whatever their selling will be fully supported and updated expeditiously.

Custom Roms

With an unlocked bootloader I thought we would have alot more roms by now than what we do.....maybe im wrong. Im not criticizing anyone or any developer's. Just thought there would be a wider variety by now. Thoughts???
Sent from my most awesome phone EVER!!!!
For one, the phone has only been out for a month and a half for Verizon. I'm not familiar development processes are from carrier versions but I'd imagine you have to specially make a rom based on the device you're using it on. Although, with it being such a popular device around the world that it's only a matter of time before more developers move over to the CDMA version.
Does Verizon and Sprint use the same version of the phone?
yup
thats how all newer phones start out... was same way for my galaxy nexus when it came out...
I think considering the late year release date (devs enjoy the holidays too) plus the additional bootloader lockdown issue that development is coming along nicely. We have 2 great roms that are daily drivers now and from what I see on the other threads another slew in alpha now. This is a flagship phone for sure, which I think makes for a bright future.

It hasn't been the case with any of my Motorola phones even with a locked bootloader. There was always more roms within about 3 days of getting cwm via bootstrap, than there has been on this device. I think a big reason is that not many people have the Verizon variant. I didn't get a GNex, but I did look at the development after a few weeks when I was still considering it, and there was a lot of roms, and mods.
It takes time for all devices. For those of us in Japan using the Japanese Galaxy Note 2, we have only just had root this week! :good:
(Thanks for the help of a few here at XDA). So in time I'm sure more ROMS will be available for the Verizon Note 2 also.

We are getting a lot more devices, which is probably diluting how many users are running each device. My first Android phone was the Droid X, and it had a ton of development at the beginning and lasted for about 7-8 months before it started to slow down. My other devices had a lot of development right away (but not as much as the X) but start to slow down after just 3 months or so.
Honestly with how awesome this device is, stock. The desire for mods is probably reduced significantly..
I've owned a Samsung captivate and droid x2. This device is so smooth and fluid I am willing to pay postpaid plan prices to have it.. (Was using page plus 55$/month with dx20

The roms developed already are great but there just doesn't seem to be the variety as on Sprint...In my opinion only...Why?

Huh.
Sprint released in October.
Sprint didn't have a locked bootloader.
Sprint has 12334234123 roms that are mostly the same with different kitchen devs running them (this is the main reason).
The reason I think we aren't seeing as much activity is because:
1. People are still recovering from the holiday season and the Note II released during the holiday season.
2. There are some of us that simply don't have time, and have no desire to release a zip rom that is more of the same. Like for me, I only have time to do mods and advise others.
3. Verizon has scared off a lot of talent.
So if anyone has a problem with this, I recommend they jump ship and change to Sprint. Personally, I feel that those who complain about this should suck it up and learn how to do this stuff. They can then proactively help fix the problem.
I think there is enough ROMs

Wow, observations don't necessarily equate to complaining. People are soo sensitive these days. The truth is, if you are developing this stuff, I couldn't respect you more for doing it. It is something I don't have the knowledge to do. But that doesn't mean that someone who is new to Verizon and used to flashing roms weekly can't question why there is a difference in the participation between the two. You are correct, there are two or three base roms and many variations of them but there "appears" to be more.
I think answer # 3 you gave is what I was expecting to hear and with all the limitations Verizon puts on the phones it doesn't surprise.
So personally I feel....if you don't care to ask why the question is being asked...dont' answer it either...with all due respect.
Keep in mind Vzw took their merry time releasing this phone that those that had to have it first went to other carriers.

Some times there are exceptions lol the bigger the userbase the quicker bugs get reported and fixed and the more stable roms become also the more people own the device the more developers start developing for this device and the more choice we get in terms of mods, tweaks, roms

It needs more choice mate, there's like 10 roms on the internation version of the phone, 5 sense and 5 non sense roms and that's it, sure we got the main ones but compared to other devices such as the gs3 and htc one x this is nothing lol we ESPECIALLY need more mods and themes for our device as you can barely find any especially on any sense roms
First of all, for this was one ''fast buying'' when i bought this phone - i didnt rly do a research about it.. most important - didnt check xda.
So when i came here, i was suprised in a bad way - such small community and quite low activity in dev section. ( i came from old good desire, where even after 2+ years its still active deving there).
I even considered to change my new HOX+ to regular HOX or even GS3, but after all for various reasons i stayed with HOX+... i must say i love it!
The thing is i personally love it even as stock... don't get me wrong - i could call my self flashomanic, i flashed my old dersire serval times in a week, even in day sometimes, but on HOX+ at the moment i don't see the need.
So i cant be the only one who don't yet see the need to start flashing... Phone is new and we haven't got bored with stock yet. In time it will grow, but i dont think that as big as hox orginal. But will see...
Well that's my opinion.
I'm still hoping that one day all roms will be compatible with both versions of the x+ via aroma, that way the community isn't split and everyone gets twice as many devs.
probably will never happen though
Seriously still very early days, if u want to see small comunities check the xperia threads which took months to release only a few roms each. Can take 6 months for a community to grow not a couple of months...
Of course the desire grand daddy of android phones, sgs3 and hox have a huge threads, they been out for yrs and still have huge followings.
The LG optimus 2x took a yr to get to where it is even now, and its now huge.
Very very early days... And we have heaps of great roms already.
Redundant thread.
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda premium
Yeah, some communities are huge and not to mention OLD. Check this friggin' BEAST that apparently refuses to die. The community there is alive and kicking. I still have the damned thing staring at me, growling, after all these years lol I've flashed it so many times I'm surprised it's still holding together
This dev community is great, we have awesome roms and kernels...period
My 2 cents.. :victory: Samsung hurt this phone. THe GS3 came out shortly after the original One X. The original one X was a nice technology leap for phones and since it was released a few weeks earlier than the GS3 it got a bunch of the community. The GS3 got the majority of it though. a lot of people were eligible for upgrades from their single/dual core phones. This Hox+ is a great phone but not so much better than the GS3, or OG hox for that matter, that it's worth it to pay early termination or buy the phone full price. I think its just a timing issue mostly as well as no new groundbreaking features. Doesnt help that i havent seen even one HOX+ commercial on TV but i see hundreds of GS3 commercials.:crying:

I betcha specific phone threads dont do a whole heck of a lot of growing after 6 months.. Certainly some exceptions, you listed a few. I'm talking more about phones with nothing new to offer over phones already on the market.(like Hox+) There's Way to many newer better stronger faster phones available to choose from after a 6 month period for a dev. It may grow some from regular joes but Devs are probably on the decline (as far as new devs) after 6 months :good: Unless its a real solid phone and they start selling it for $50-$100. Dev community would grow then :silly:
lloir has done a great job with aosp for this device (many other htc devices should be so lucky)
turge has now brought viper rom to the att version, and m0narx will for intl
idk, to me as a user id feel pretty lucky with whats available now and coming soon...given that its a really small userbase
There is some great work done on this device all ready. Some big roms in the works as well. Don't the International device was only released if I am right on the 22nd of October so it is a very new device. People have not had time to get there hands on it.
Personally I am very happy I went for this over the One X. It is an amazing phone!
Not to mention we have great custom kernels for both sense and non-sense
Sent from my HTC One X+
No need to whine. You have a nice bunch of choices yet on this phone. Having said that, I think One X+ will never get the popularity of One X.
You have to think in terms of cycles. A big number of HTC Devs switched from Desire HD to One X or to Sensation and from Sensation to One X. Always about a year. So many of them have no reason at all to switch to One X+, especially as the next generation will already be here in late spring/early summer (which will be around a year then again since One X).
When HTC starts pushing out updates that screw up the phone (ala the Inspire) the dev activity will pick up.
We have insert coin, arhd, ordroid, some great aokp/aosp development going on and venom att. (Venom intl is around the corner)
Add to that some great kernel development already in place.
We already have in place a great development choice.
Quality matters more than quantity.

[Q] getting new phone

i had a htc amaze 4g. and i really like it. i been reading that other phones have better rooms . i was wondering which will be a good option . ill apreaciate all advice . i was thinking htc one x. or maybe stay with amaze. so far i been looking for samsung 2 and 3 but i dont like the plastic, it looks like is going to break. my budget is no more than $300.
Sticks with the amaze and save the cash. Other phones aren't much better. They just have more people making roms which in the end are VERY similar!!! Just have different tweaks, etc.

Top 2 choices next month is either the HTC One and the S4. S3 already has awesome !STABLE! fully functional roms, blazing fast, huge community, etc.
You can get a S3 relatively cheap now. I sold my S3, to get either a S4 or the One. Went back to my Amaze 4g and now I remember why I gave it up in the first place.
Just my 2 pennies.

Are you referring to the Viper rom that has Sense 4?? That I am aware of the following still are not working
Bluetooth

@ OP, the Amaze itself is a great phone but I got tired of dealing with half or almost fully working roms. We have great dedicated developers but our community is small and fixes take time. HTC isn't too community friendly. I am currently using CM10 and I have a bunch of annoying issues. I'm actually thinking of going stock to have all working features with no issues. I just lost faith in the phone and got inpatient. Personally I can't wait to sell it or at the very least have it around til a fully functional modern rom comes out. I'm stuck with it til mid of next month.

Good luck selling it. Most people haven't even heard of the amaze. The ones on craigslist are going REAL cheap because no one is buying them. I plan on upgrading in the next month or two and have gotten almost no replies asking for the amaze, they all are interested in my jail broken and unlocked 4s.

CM/AOSP

Any news on CM or AOSP for this device? TW is pissing me off, I'm not expecting the ROM to be ready right now but are there plans at all?
This might be the reason I run to the htc m8... I want some aosp.. I want some smooth ness.... I'm still Within my 14 days...

That ship has sailed for me though, I've tripped Knox and I don't want to risk sending it back. There is a chance I'll be able to trade straight up someone on Craigs list for an M8 but I can't return to TMO.
Well around here they don't check for Knox.... so I was thinking of tripping it, and installing xposed installer and see if by debloating it would be snappier and if I like it... then up stay with it but texting with one hand is hard...

I tried the two international ROMS floating around and they're laggy compared to the stock .tar in the General section. All I did was delete almost all of the Samsung apps and while it is smooth, TW is just too cartoonish and icon oriented. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and i prefer simple, clean menus with little to no animations going on. I still have my N5 and I'm doing everything I can to NOT use the damn thing because I don't want to feel I've wasted money on the S5.
If after a couple of weeks and still no AOSP anything, I'll probably be getting rid of the device.
Oh, I've been using Xposed with Gravitybox since the day I got it which was on the 10th. I turned off the touch button LED's and use the NAV bar that comes with Gravitybox.
CM and other AOSP builds will be ready as soon as they're ready.
It's a new device and bringup/addition usually takes some time.
Rest assured it will be widely known when it's available - and T-Mo is usually first up.

I was checking the CM website and their "week of" column didn't even include the release of the S5, but it mentioned the M8...so I'm curious if they're even going to work on it. It would be strange if they didnt, since the Galaxy S series is arguably the most popular phone among casual users and a fair deal of flasher.
I can't wait either. It's just been a day with TW, and already I can't stand it. Hope to see Liquidsmooth or Beanstalk on it soon. They're already working on Liquidsmooth for the M8.

They get almost every flagship device - and Cyanogen usually does the T-Mo bringups himself like he did with S4 and Note 3.
So yeah... I don't think you have much to worry about in it coming. Just a matter of time...
