CM/AOSP - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

Any news on CM or AOSP for this device? TW is pissing me off, I'm not expecting the ROM to be ready right now but are there plans at all?

This might be the reason I run to the htc m8... I want some aosp.. I want some smooth ness.... I'm still Within my 14 days...

That ship has sailed for me though, I've tripped Knox and I don't want to risk sending it back. There is a chance I'll be able to trade straight up someone on Craigs list for an M8 but I can't return to TMO.

Well around here they don't check for Knox.... so I was thinking of tripping it, and installing xposed installer and see if by debloating it would be snappier and if I like it... then up stay with it but texting with one hand is hard...

I tried the two international ROMS floating around and they're laggy compared to the stock .tar in the General section. All I did was delete almost all of the Samsung apps and while it is smooth, TW is just too cartoonish and icon oriented. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and i prefer simple, clean menus with little to no animations going on. I still have my N5 and I'm doing everything I can to NOT use the damn thing because I don't want to feel I've wasted money on the S5.
If after a couple of weeks and still no AOSP anything, I'll probably be getting rid of the device.
Oh, I've been using Xposed with Gravitybox since the day I got it which was on the 10th. I turned off the touch button LED's and use the NAV bar that comes with Gravitybox.

CM and other AOSP builds will be ready as soon as they're ready.
It's a new device and bringup/addition usually takes some time.
Rest assured it will be widely known when it's available - and T-Mo is usually first up.

I was checking the CM website and their "week of" column didn't even include the release of the S5, but it mentioned the M8...so I'm curious if they're even going to work on it. It would be strange if they didnt, since the Galaxy S series is arguably the most popular phone among casual users and a fair deal of flasher.

I can't wait either. It's just been a day with TW, and already I can't stand it. Hope to see Liquidsmooth or Beanstalk on it soon. They're already working on Liquidsmooth for the M8.

They get almost every flagship device - and Cyanogen usually does the T-Mo bringups himself like he did with S4 and Note 3.
So yeah... I don't think you have much to worry about in it coming. Just a matter of time...

Probably because VZW just got the Note 2 less than a month ago and the bootloader was unlocked about three weeks ago. Other carriers have had the Note 2 for quite a bit longer.

Lulz, Aint that the truth.
Hopefully some other options get cooking for us soon.
Coming from the G Nexus where options were endless I'm having a tuff time satisfying my addiction.

lmao @ Slick!.. I'd love to see imo's lean kernel over here for our ASOP Roms.
I tried to let people know about something different coming and it was shut down. Guess people are happy with only a few options. Yes the gnex was awesome as far as options it was really limitless choices.

^This.
I just switched from T-Mobile & the HTC Sensation 4G a couple weeks after it came out (June 15th, 2011). It took about six months for development to really take off, and only recently (as in, the last few months - over a year since release) has CyanogenMod had stable releases of CM9. Nightlies for CM10 only came out last month.
Admittedly, Samsung devices have been getting much more attention that HTC devices from developers due to their popularity, but it'll still take time for our brand new device (it was released November 29th, recall) to get into enough developer's hands to start having lots of options. I think we can be confident that this will happen. Probably much quicker than any HTC device ever did.
In the meantime, we seem to be in much better shape than, say, the T-Mobile LG G2X (remember that device?). The stock software with that device - which was pretty much top-of-the-line when it was released - was nearly crippling. We have the best hardware out there and at worst adequate (I'd say more than adequate) software to tide us over until ROM developers unleash their magic.
I recommend patience - and maybe some encouragement to your favorite developer (in the form of financial support, that is - no ETA requests)!

I am back, how y'all!?

Hey guys, I am not sure if many over here know me, or if those that knew me are still around. But it'd be cool to see a few familiar faces again. I am back, after a long time. Not saying I will be checking in regularly, as I got busy IRL, but it'd be nice to see some familiar names there...

Are you still using the Dinc4g? I'm still quite content with mine. Nothing out there has me in the least bit excited to go to anything else. A co-worker has the new M8. Nice specs, but that sucker's HUGE.

Yup! I am still with the Dinc4G alright. It is sweet, and running latest CM 11, 4.4.2 KitKat. This is definitely the best phone I have had so far. Sure not the best out there, but pretty good. And the only phone (of the 3 I had so far) that can run CM almost bug free (apart from rare reboots). So I am quite content.
But later this year, when the new Nexus is out, I will be jumping ship to AT&T and get on the Nexus train!
Btw, I may actually go to AT&T before getting the nexus. Will the Dinc4G work with AT&T? It is a world phone, so it has all the bands right? I used it once in India with the local (Airtel) network and it worked... I dunno
Wow... It has been over 1.5 years since I had this phone, and I hardly noticed! That is a sign of a good phone folks! No needs to gets the latest and greatest y'all! I am very happy with this phone, so happy that I stopped bothering updating CM for a long time, since last July/August and only recently updated to 4.3 (April) and then updated to 4.4.2 yesterday! Call me lazy but CM 10.2.1 with Jellybean 4.2 was quite good!

It's really smooth and makes me miss this device
Just letting you know, it's been rumored that the nexus line is dead now. I don't know if they will continue with the GPE devices. The GPE devices are just as good as the nexus in my opinion. Just a different name. The HTC One M8 has a GPE on their site.
apart from that ... fireball isn't completely dead (with regards to dev'ing) yet ... just the most recent dev work (kernel & rom) updates are still "behind the scenes" in coding and testing => before another release
cheers
Yay! People woke up and responded to this thread. :victory: I doubt the nexus line is dead, as it is quite a popular device, slowly gaining more traction and often sold out online. My brother told me the next Nexus device is rumored to be 5.5 inches big so I dunno. It seems odd that it will be killed off, although it is just as strange that they have not released an upgraded model for the Nexus 10. It is soo difficult to tell with Google as they are so fickle, quick with axing services and products. Hope the nexus lineup continues or at least Google Play Editions continue, it makes little sense to kill it off as it is one of Google's answer to fragmentation.
I am soon jumping ship to AT&T so that I can finally pick Google Play edition/Nexus phones! But I believe this rock solid phone being a global phone can work on AT&T? At least get 3G? What is the catch there?

using it on another carrier _should_ be no prob, just set-up your APNs accordingly. but as for the radio:
* 4G LTE is (unfortunately) 700MHz _only_! (even if the chip itself is 4G multiband capable) = so NO worldwide usable 4G LTE >.<
* 3.5G / HSPA modes are rather instable so that it usually falls-back to regular 3G from my experience
* but those regular 3G as well as all 2.5G etc modes (GPRS / EDGE) are really stable and good for whatever usage.

---------- Post added at 06:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:58 PM ----------
I am in the final stages of coming out with a apk called PERMA root. It will root while also giving you the option to unlock bootloader. I am testing on two more devices before release. I want to leave nobody unhappy. Therefore any device you may have will work. As new phones are introduced it will only take a couple days to activate from my end. Please be patient because as you already know this is some hard work and long hour testing.
Tested devices: (list includes all carriers) (multiple devices in each listed brand tested to include s4 and s5) Lg, Samsumg, htc, and currently testing last of others. Thanks for the patience.
Be welcome to share accross XDA

He was claiming root and bootloader unlock. But instead of getting everyone riled up he probably should have made it a covert job and then "Bam" here you go. Kinda like when the Rezound got s-off. But the thread got way out of control and it's locked now until he can prove he has something substantial. If you'd like to check it out see the first post in this thread and go to original post quote.

I feel the same way about my galaxy bloat 3. First and formost i need a phone that works as a phone. This phone has the worst service and software out of any phone i've owned. As far as the sortware goes i thought i would be able to fix it with cm11 but thanks to verizon and me not doing my home work a head of time i'm stuck with the ****tiest phone i've ever owned. I can't wait for july to replace it with a motorola product.
I must be getting old. I don't see a problem with the stock note 3 and the bloat. Yeah the signal could be better but that is on Samsung more than Verizon. And yes Verizon could shorten the approval process for updates and Samsung could drop tw and put out updates in line with the nexus line as all manufactures should the ui should be a app on the app store and be little more than a launcher for people to choose to use if they want.
Not going to happen. If your on big red you likely don't have a choice or it is the best service in your area or your grandfathered into unlimited. The Samsung phones were the only ones with 2 features I am unable to give up battery that is removable and sd card.

If this phone doesn't end up with Lollipop that's rootable or an unlocked bootloader before February, I'm throwing mine at my Verizon Rep's face and picking up a Note 4. We bought Note 3's for only two reasons. The first reason was that the other Note's were easy to root and flash to CM and the second reason was because of the S-Pen. At this point I would take a loss on the S-Pen functionality just to be rid of all of the Samsung Bloat on my phones.
Wow. sounds like you all should be buying an international variant. trashing you phone or going to a N4 with a locked bootloader is not going to solve your problem. I am pleased with my Rooted N3 and have no issues and will stay with Samsung for a while. Root is nice but it's not going to cause me to put my phone in the trash, there are other things in life that are far more important
Yeah way to stick it to Samsung by throwing out last quarters model and buying the brand new one.
I see both sides, though we didn't have ten or fifteen roms to flash, this phone was not a waste at all. It's a solid phone for my use. But flashing roms has become a hobby and I don't like not doing that either. So even though most of the developers are going to the Nexus. I just don't like having no SD or removable battery either. And how are they handling any replacements for a phone currently not carried by Big Red? May not be the place for me to ask that but I'm curious.
You might want to check out the Note 4 forum for scripts that can disable a ton of the bloatware without root. I am still rocking rooted MJE so I can't test it with kitkat. It supposedly will run on most android phones. Just wanted to mention a potential solution until root achieved.

So locked note 3 to a locked down note 4 when you are stuck with the options of motorola or sony for unlockable phones that are on verizon.
IF you really have to have CM 12 you are going to have to either make sure the phone you get at that time has an unlockable bl or is a nexus.
And as for the note 4 it is only a slight upgrade over the note 3 and both will someday get lollipop note 4 sooner than the note 3...

Its about time they gave the Note 2 the respect that it deserves in my opinion this phone is one of the best smartphones out there Im on 4.1.2 unlocked rooted with philz touch recovery running Alliance Rom build 30 with the lastest Agni kernel and the phone is super fast and kicks ass so Lollipop can easily be handled by this phone so Im happy to hear the good news
Yeah this is pretty exciting news!
Hoping for an early release date, which seems unlikely though.
I was shocked to see this post and the other news sites report on it, pretty cool.

Not to mention it seems like development has slowed down or stopped altogether for this phone.

Unfortunately I like so many others who have the "retail" version of the Note 4, are waiting on devs to get root for us.
They have temp root but that's not root at all. It goes away with every reboot / shutdown of the phone...
Now if you do get the Note 4, never take OTA updates, and get the developer edition of the phone! It's expensive though.
All things considered I love the Note 4! My only gripes are root and the battery life on Lollipop. I can downgrade to KitKat to fix that but what's the use for temp root? Great phone tho a major improvement over the Note 2.
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
I moved on to the LG G3. Seriously beautiful phone, great specs, and fairly easy to root and with bumped kernels it's like having the bootloader unlocked (even if it's not). So yes you can have CM/AOSP ROMs on the G3 easily.
This totally sucks. The Note 2 is one of the best phones ever created. It's a total shame to stop updating it. No real replacement exists.

Is development for non-MDK dead?

It seems that everything has pretty much gone dark in the development section (exception of HyperDrive).
Does anyone know of any other ports or ROMs for Safestrap users that are still being released or updated? What happened to kexec?
I like my s4 and with a few exceptions want to stay with it for a little while longer. At this point I've been on stock rooted for almost a year and my stability is suffering for some reason. I want to jump to a ROM but it's looking like there is a lot less support and new stuff comming out.

Sadly, once they locked the bootloader all bets were pretty much off...I've had my s4 since launch day and it was amazing, until they locked it down. Hyper drive is the only option pretty much. There are a few s5 ports but I don't find them to be very stable.

You can buy one from Google or Motorola at full price and get it to work on Verizon with some Sim card swapping. Word is February 26 will be the Verizon in store release but who knows. If I didn't have unlimited data or another carrier besides att in my area I would leave Verizon.

I can imagine the subsidy was the reason why most people bought this phone. I couldn't have dropped $600 on a phone at the time. Learned my lesson the hard way though.
