[Q] I need SVDO: HTC EVO LTE or Samsung S3 - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I'm a Sprint user in dire need of the SVDO feature, simultaneous voice and 3G data.
I am searching for a phone I can buy on eBay at a decent price to tide me over for up to 6 months, so that I can preserve my upgrade for something like the Samsung S4 or similar later this year. The HTC EVO LTE sells for $100-150 cheaper than the Samsung S3 on average. I would be inclined to get the EVO LTE if I could snatch one up for sub $200 (many are selling this cheaply already), but I would like some input from current users.
The main reason I would get either the EVO LTE or S3 is for simultaneous voice and 3G data. I spend a lot of time on the road and it's a feature I am very reliant on.
Some of the questions I have are:
1. Does the data connection maintain 3G at all times, or does it knock back to 1x? (Forgive me, I'm not familiar with the tech behind SVDO to know if this is possible.)
2. Is there a source for replacement batteries at a fair price (realizing it takes a little know-how to replace the battery on this device)?
3. Would you suggest I pony up the extra $100-150 to get the Samsung S3, based on your experience?
Thank you for your input.

They are both great phones ... If you are planning to upgrade soon either will do the job well. 3g/4g stays consistent on a call and will not drop to 1x unless their is bad signal. Only issue you will have is battery life which both are roughly the same but one has a removable battery and the other doesn't. Jellybean did wonders for the EVO imo very smooth I have had no issues. I have owned the s3 and I loved it just as much but I love the build one the EVO so my wife has the s3 now.

So it can revert to 1x? Is there a way to force it to remain 3G only?
I had a Touch Pro 2 and I could force it to remain EVDO connection and never revert to 1X (this prevented any phone calls or texts from arriving, but it was nice if you needed to keep the connection fast).

It will stay on 3g all the time or 4g all the time unless you are in an area with ****ty connection you can't force a ****ty connection to get better... The towers controll what connection you will receive.
Edit: you will not loose conection if you get a call also if you are downloading something it will not stop from downloading while on a call

You can't force it to remain 3G if there is no EVDO signal. Hence why NORCALkID said it will revert to 1x with bad signal.
If you are always in strong 3G/4G coverage you won't have an issue. I haven't had an issue with my EVO LTE and using SVDO the rare couple of times I've actually used it. Worked great on 3G and 4G.

I guess that is a unique feature to my Touch Pro 2 (also with my touch pro, and the mogul before that). I was able to force it to cling to the EVDO signal (all the way down to one bar) and never drop to 1X.
Thank you for the replies.

How do you force that with android on the EVO LTE? Is it an app? Yeah I get 2-3 bar 3G signal, so I'm not having issues there. I force 3G fine on my current Touch Pro 2.

Yep. I kept thinking s3's would drop in price, but they are holding fast at around $350. The EVO LTE's are dropping to sub $200. If I could get a decent s3 at around $225-250 I'd possibly get that, but I don't see that happening for a few months at least.

I have a follow-up question:
On my touch pro 2, I can dial ##778# and force the radio to HDR only. On my TP2, this locks me onto the 3G signal and it never drops to 1x. This comes in handy for long downloads and any other situation that would require a constant uninterrupted data connection. The only negative being, I can't receive incoming calls or texts while it's in HDR only mode.
Will HDR only mode with the EVO LTE prevent any incoming calls or texts? I'm just wondering because SVDO is supposed to be able to handle voice calls simultaneously while 3g or 1x data is running (not interested in LTE since we don't have that in my area). I'm just uncertain how HDR only mode would affect the SVDO feature.
What happens if I have it in HDR only mode and I try to make a call out? Will it maintain the 3G connection with the voice going on simultaneously?

[Q] 4G LTE I hope will be better WIMAX

I currently have the EVO (great phone) but I have trouble using the 4G (WIMAX), I live in a 4G area that doesn't have 4G, lol and and work I have a lot of concrete around, so 4G doesn't work there either, so I'm wondering if I should try the TB 4G on LTE, I use 3g at work no problem but its still too slow. I hardly never have the 4G turned on my EVO which Im kinda upset about, so far WIMAX has really kinda sucked. Does anyone have experience with both radios? and do you think LTE might penetrate the concrete at my work?
It should do better. The way i understand it, higher frequencies (Wimax being 2.5 -3.5 GHz range) are more easily deflected. Like a bouncing ball.
LTE runs at 700 MHz and does penetrate better. Like a dodgeball.

Thanks I will try it and ill keep my fingers crossed.
LTE will penetrate buildings better than WiMAX. The question is whether your specific spot is in good coverage and only you can test that.
I've been ordering 4G LTE usb modems for my company's new hires and had one of the other IT guys do some bandwidth tests. (I ordered one of his new hires the 4G modem and he promptly had me switch it into his name and gave his new hire his old 3G model). Anyway, he got 4.55 Mb/s down and 3.13 Mb/s up compared to 1.75 Mb/s down and 0.53 Mb/s up on his 3G modem. This was in NYC. Indoors, but with good reception. This is very fast indeed.
LTE is vastly superior to wimax. I can write more details out later, but you can put your faith in it.
Worked on the infrastructure!
Quite simply, Wimax sucks. I can only get it downtown. I can get it for thirty seconds at my job and I can't get it at all in my home. I can't even get it if I step outside. Sprint has really dug a hole for themselves tacking on 10 dollars under the title of "Premium Data." They later tacked on a premium data charge for all smartphones; they would have been better off simply saying that they were raising prices to offset the costs of being able to provide unlimited data... These things led to Sprint having record lows on their quarterly report. Having a new Nintendo DS-like non-4G enabled phone isn't gonna help their sales much more... Making the decision to switch to Verizon to get the Thunderbolt because I will be able to get the best service. In my neighborhood, Verizon is the only carrier that gets full bars and doesn't drop calls. They charge a lot but you can't say that you don't get what you pay for. I'm certain that Verizon's LTE will be superior to Wimax. Verizon is all about having services and devices that are superior to their competition.

Technically, its the frequency being used (700mhz vs 2.5ghz), rather than the technology (LTE vs WiMax).
Higher frequency (2.5ghz) can't travel as far (so you need more towers per square mile), and has a harder time penetrating solid objects compared to lower frequencies (700mhz).

Potential simultaneous voice/data problem on Tbolt

So I was thinking about the tbolt, and realized something that I believe is interesting:
It's pretty common knowledge that Verizon CDMA does not currently support simultaneous voice/data, a huge grievance for many a verizon iPhone owner. The Thunderbolt is touted to be the first device that can handle this function and will do so by handling voice over the CDMA network and data over the LTE network. Makes sense, sounds good and all right? BUT....I was thinking about coverage of LTE and how it's pretty scarce for now and was wondering what would happen if you were not in an LTE area and using the Tbolt? Wouldn't the absence of the LTE network effectively stifle your ability to use data while on the phone?
Does anyone have any info on this or remember reading anything about it? It seems to me that it is entirely possible that the Tbolt will have the same limitations over simultaneous voice/data as the iPhone and other smartphones as long as the user is in a non-4G/LTE area. I am lucky enough to live in a 4G/LTE area so this wouldn't be a huge factor I guess but some people were really looking forward to having that capability.
Unlike all the rumors, the phones has two radios.
1 - 1x voice/data radio
2 - EVDO / LTE radio
The phone will do simultaneous voice and data in both 4G and 3G areas. Only issues is that two radios means increased battery drain

Your post makes no sense bud. The phone has the following specs:
CDMA 1X/EVDO Rev.A: 800/1900MHz
CDMA LTE - 700MHz
Rev A Capable
The phone has one of 2 possibilities:
1. In an area with no 4G coverage, the phone will simply not work as advertised. It will act just like any other 3G smartphone.
2. The more likely option, and I say likely mostly because they like to avoid class actions: Verizon partly delayed the phone in order to upgrade the towers and networks with the ability to process 3G data and calls simultaneously.

if that second option were true, wouldn't that mean that every phone currently running on 3G (iphones and droids alike) would all gain the ability to run simultaneous data and voice? that sounds very nice indeed.
i don't have any sources but i believe i remember reading that the nature of CDMA and how it connects prohibits simultaneous voice/data as opposed to however GSM operates. sorry for such broad information but i'm not exactly a wireless carrier expert. if what you said is true though and they found some way to upgrade it, that would be awesome for all those on verizon 3G.
my skeptical side though is saying that verizon is no saint and would just respond that simultaneous voice/data is a feature specifically for 4G service and if you aren't in a 4G area tough break and wait for 4G/LTE to roll out near you.
Actually VZW recently did a software upgrade for their infrastructure to allow simultaneous voice and data over EVDO Rev A and the Thunderbolt is their first handset with the radio capable of supporting it. From what I've read it's a hardware thing so they can't update firmware in other phones like the iPhone to support it. I can't link to any articles from the XDA App but read any of the major Android blogs as they've been reporting about it for the past couple days or do a Google search for SVDO.

BAAMM! lol
That is the rumor Verizon is not using 1X advanced, so the only way that simultaneous voice and data works if you have two radios which are capable of transmitting at the same time. This is why only select 4G phones support SVDO.
As I said earlier, SVDO will work in both 4G and 3G areas because of the dual radios on-board.

The Thunderbolt have SVDO support, because it's using a SVDO capable chipset. Dual radios doesn't have anything to do with it, but only with CDMA/ 4G LTE handoffs, which is similar to Sprint's 4G phones. SVDO works on a 1X and 1X Advanced capable device, so didn't need to switch to 1X Advanced in order for it to work, though they have been some 1X advanced codecs for a while. Verizon wanted this including in their iPhone 4 phones so bad, but it just wasn't ready.

Ok, so I was interested in checking out the LTE speeds and wanted to test out the ability to do SVDO. I went to my local Verizon store and realized that My area doesn't have 4G yet. Duh! lol. And when inspecting the phone itself I could not find a way to turn on or any mention of LTE in any way anywhere on the phone! Hmmmm. So then I tried to test SVDO. I called one t-bolt with the other display t-bolt and then tried to surf. Newp. no can do. The call went thru so Its all setup but maybe it had no sim card?? I didn't check. Maybe my area doesn't have SVDO yet either? Can anyone now confirm simultaneous voice and data??? Now that people have got the phone in their hands now.
I am not in a 4G area and I can confirm the phone does voice and data simultaneously, very well, I might add

You know my verizon rep said a funny thing today when I asked him about the voice/data at the same time on 3G...he actually said "we don't guarantee that will work yet and that the network is still being worked on in some places to enable this feature for certain devices like the Thunderbolt" I had already tried it on the demo TB so I wasn't worried but maybe that's why it's not working for you.
I can also confirm that in a non 4g area it does both voice and data at the same time... nice feature I didn't expect.
Hmm, yeah I guess as usual my area is slow at upgrading the network. Man, if Verizon would pay my etf on Sprint I would be all over that thing.

I work for verizon and you are right they have changed on the network side making simultanious voice and data through both 4G and 3G and it was done on the network not on the phone itself. Now I don't know if this was the reason for the month and a half delay or not but makes sense. From what I heard from my friend in the testing department it had to do with battery.
I don't know about you guys but I really love the fact that all the naysayers that simultaneous voice and data is impossible can finally shut up. LOL

Need opinions - Evo 3D poor reception

I am coming from an Evo 4G. My apartment has always had sub par reception on sprint but now with the Evo 3D it is becoming irritating. In the same places I had 3G, I now am roaming. In a place where I had 2-3 4G bars, I have barely 1. I have tried updating my prl, my profile. One thing that I will note is that 4G on the 1 reported bar is about as good as the 3 bars on the old Evo. However 3G reception is definitely not very good overall.
My question - as I approach the one month I have had this phone, I wonder if I should:
A. Exchange the phone for another 3D. Has anyone heard of reception issues related to hardware? How has this device compared for everyone to the old Evo as far as reception? Do I have a dud?
B. Return it and get an original Evo.
C. Something else - call sprint ask for airwave or something like that.
I appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks in advance.
My radio bars do show a tad lower, but I havent really noticed any issues.
I am willing to be some future PRL updates will help this.
My OG Evo was the same around launch time too
Had the same issue vs my old Eris on Verizon. Sprint reset the network which helped some, but I wound up manually changing the PRL to a USCellular one. Gained 4 bars.

so PRL updates meaning non-sprint developer created? so 2 votes in favor of waiting it out?

Have some friends with different carriers test your area, see which is stronger and use their PRL. That's what I did, told that to the Sprint rep while getting my MSL and he liked the idea (I did hint I would leave if I couldn't get a better signal).

Had the exact same issue and well I returned mine this last Sunday and got a new 3d and well it's better so far. Last week Sprint updated prl over the air and it worked for a minute and then it was back to roaming, dropping calls, battery draining like crazy, sensitive power button. I know it's only Monday but I have not dropped one call or went into roaming yet.

Verizon is strongest but if I take that PRL then I wont have Sprint 4G will I?
Also how would you load the other PRL?
Thank you!
I had the power button sensitivity issue - where the button presses momentarily caused the power menu to come up instead of going into sleep mode. So I took that phone into Sprint yesterday and they gave me a new phone, within 30 days. Any replacement should be a new phone and not a refurbished one within the initial 30 days of purchase.
Point being is that they new phone to me doesn't pick up a signal as well as the other Evo 3D that I had. We have an Airave at work and the old phone would have max bars and crystal clear, today first day with the new phone was at about 2 or so bars and the one phone call was very well lets just say not so crystal clear.
Recommend you take the phone back and ask them to test it. They can test the phone for you, and worst case swamp it out for you. Don't recommend PRL hacks since those tend to get people kicked out of Sprint due to excessive roaming.

Sprint 4G is on a different radio than data/voice, WiMax vs CDMA/1Rxx.
If you search for say "carrier name" PRL July 2011, you should be able to find a current file. Download the file, open QPST Service Programming, click the tab "Roam" and put the file location in "Preferred Roaming". Recommend you take the phone back and ask them to test it. They can test the phone for you, and worst case swamp it out for you. Don't recommend PRL hacks since those tend to get people kicked out of Sprint due to excessive roaming.

Great idea - I think I will do this

I don't think you have a dud. Rather than bars, what are your actual speeds using something like Speed Test from the Market. I've had well....more than 3 of these E3D's, lol, and only 1 got half-ass decent speeds out of the box. With some re-provisioning and data reset methods in the General section I got all of them to set up correctly on the network.

What's your decided with out 4g LTE coverages

I'm currently eligibility for upgrade
Oh ya finally after two year O EVO. I wish to get this wonderful EVO 4g LTE but no coverage LTE
So now I don't want to go down from 4g Wimax to 3g hmmmmm coz I live in San Francisco. We don't have sprint LTE this year. I think my decided to wait at list until my upgrade is expire.

Wimax sucked anyways, Im in STL and it was one of the first in the country, and it was GREAT the first couple months.... then it became worse than 3g.
Its expected that the San Francisco area will have LTE within the next 6 months as it, parts of New York, Florida, and a couple other states are listed for Round 2 of the LTE rollout, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2012. Sprint's LTE network is currently being installed in the Los Angeles area by Alcatel Lucent.
The 4g was never an issue with me. I've had 4g since almost day 1. The only time I use it is for downloading large files. I can probably count on all my fingers and toes how many times that has happened. My 3g speeds are good; usually around 1-1.2 mb/s, and that is usually plenty fast.
Or I use wifi when available. Until they figure out a way to keep it from killing your battery, I probably won't use it very often.
If their work continues the way it is and on schedule I should have LTE by the end of the year..But personally I dont mind if I have to wait..Im in my truck 10 hours a day with a verizon 3G/4G LTE Hot Spot for work for my laptop and wifi needs.
Pre-ordered and waiting for release.
Phones to awesome to not get. Lte or no lte. In due time we shall have lte

I'm leaving unlimited Verizon LTE for Sprint 3G.
LTE will come in about 6 months, I think I can manage.

We never had wimax in Reno, so the 4g on my Evo 4g was pretty useless to me. With Sprint who knows if we will see lte before my new Evo 4g lte is up for upgrade.
When I got my og evo on release day the nice folks at the Sprint store said we would get 4g by the end of the year. So I am pretty skeptical whenever I here we will get something from Sprint.
I use my connection at home for my phone. My job takes me all over the state, so 3g is what I get most of the time for gps navigation. If LTE will be as fast as they say, I might just use it for internet at home. I live in Kansas City with a 4g tower 1/4 mile away. I get full bars 4g currently.

3g when out and about.
never did use 4g much even though i had a tower around the corner. had to keep the phone plugged in or else batt would die. 4g tethering worked well when i had no internet, but dropped alot. Returned to 3g on my tethering occasions.
4g uses up too much battery to leave on and expect a signal around town, when the towers were rare.
hopefully i can leave LTE on and be accustomed to/get used to using instead of 3g.

I'm in the same boat, I used Wimax maybe once a month, just because if I actually had to download a large file, that's all I could do. The battery would be dead within an hour, hour and a half tops. The battery life with the lte chip being integrated is supposed to be phenomenal compared to what we we used to.
Luckily I live in one of the first wave cities, so I expect LTE to be available in some areas already as towers are already up in some areas once the phone comes out if not by the following month once they officially go live. I honestly just like most never really used 4g on my evos however the way it was implemented was flawed by default. radio on a different chip and not enough coverage so constant losing signal and swiching left battery life to be desirable. I expect with LTE it'll be different once the ball gets rolling. The radio is on the same dye as the soc so better battery by default. Sprint will have better LTE coverage than wimax so again that will help with battery life as you won't have to keep switching between the two. If you read the manual unlike verizon sprint has a toggle to disable LTE and only use evdo. I'm sure this will help people who don't live in LTE markets as well as those of us who want to get a little extra juice out of it. Based on the reviews of the AT&T One X though, battery life even with LTE on should still be pretty good.
I live in Miami and the LTE is very spotty, I don't have it at home; only used it to download big files anyways so I'm not worried about it. In the end it's a premium fee for a monster smartphone, very worth it. I would be really happy to get LTE, though, since my wifi at home is total crap :/ and it's not going to be as much of a battery hog as it was on the OG evo.

Most of you guys don't care about 4g.
But that's not a true, unless your smart phone using only in and out calls.
If using internet and WiFi tether you need a 4g to browser speed downloading, gaming etc... I'm not talking in your f*** home or work place only. You know how crappy is sprint 3g or tell me you are ambitious for new smart phone instead of what can make it a difference?
For me nothing this phone with out 4g lte .
Coz I use a lot internet and WiFi tether that's why I bought smart phone with gps capability, 8mp camera and so on
Please don't laying me Sprint 3g good enough.
I can say congrats for who has 4g lte by next month or early July.

There's the key there - for you. Many people will be ecstatic to have a phone with a bigger, more beautiful screen, more responsiveness, a way better camera, stock ICS, Sense 4.0 (maybe), better WiFi speeds (n capabilities), NFC capabilities, Google Wallet, the ability to take pictures while shooting movies, a nicer kickstand, a thinner profile (and lighter), better sound quality, a dedicated camera button, and better battery life (due to stock ICS, and efficient processor).
If none of those things are worth anything to you, I'd say you're in the minority here. I'll enjoy the heck out of this phone until LTE and HD voice arrive. Have fun with your phone.

I'm in the Austin, TX market and already Waco (part of the Austin market for Sprint purposes) has 4G LTE working...people posting 21Meg download speeds already. They are supposed to have the rest of the Austin market done by July (don't remember where I read it, but it makes sense).
Clear rolled out the WiMax 4G, but SPRINT is rolling this out, and they know they have to get it right because they are in stiff competition with Verizon and AT&T. Houston and Dallas are other Texas markets that will be in first wave, though I'm not sure if they are already up and running. I got my pre-order in today and I'm eager to get my hands on it.
And while many people do use the 4G, if you're in a building all day and not out on the roads, you probably didn't get much signal anyhow. With LTE, in-building signal is supposed to be much better, so when you're not able to get on WiFi, it will be nice. Can't wait!
Where are you finding this info? Let me know if you find stuff about the austin rollout. gonna be hard to give up full signal wimax at work for too long...

3G

Am thinking about the evo 4g lte because I've read excellent reviews about the call quality. I already know I won't be getting lte in my area for a long time. Are the 3g speeds actually worse on this model as compared with other Sprint models ? (some reviews have claimed this)
My 3g is slow enough as it is on my HTC Touch (can live with it though), but won't be able to accept anything slower.
i have kno problems with this phone.. its perfect for me im just bored with it... i need a new phone every 6 months i think!!! lol..
I'm hoping the following review is incorrect:
The ugly:
This is where the phone starts to fall apart for me. The network capabilities are awful. They are a clear downgrade from my Evo 4g. I live in Kansas City, and my old Evo 4g had both excellent 3g coverage, and excellent WiMax coverage. Ping times were the only problem I had with WiMax (typically in the 200-300 range), but I typically got 3-7Mbps down and ~1Mbps up with very reliable coverage, especially in my home. Outside of WiMax range, I reliably got 3g coverage that pulled ~1-2Mbps down and up. This is what I would expect, given that I am in Sprint's home market.
I upgraded to the Evo 4g LTE after hearing that LTE was officially "live" in Kansas City. Unfortunately the news that I missed was that by "live", they really mean "about 30% live". There is little to no actual LTE coverage in the city. At my apartment, where WiMax was previously very strong, I can only connect to LTE rarely, and when I do the signal is so weak that my connection times out regularly. Watching antenna strength, the LTE connection sits around -115 to -120dBm (in non-technical terms, that is just a hair above zero bars). I actually disabled the LTE antenna on my phone because it is disruptive FAR more often than it is useful.
"So what", you might say. "Just use 3g". I would agree with you. 3g should be able to get me by in the next few months while Sprint continues their LTE rollout, hopefully with an antenna near my home. Unfortunately the phone's 3g antenna is also highly problematic. 3g signal pickup is weaker than my old Evo 4g, and speeds are considerably worse than my previous phone. Pings usually sit around 200, which is acceptable, but I almost never get above 0.5Mbps down, or up. Additionally (and even more importantly), the phone has a habit of dropping the 3g signal. I tether often, and when I do I tend to lose 3g every few minutes. This is in close proximity to a 3g tower, and with a strong signal (4-5 bars, in the -70 to -80dBm range). The phone will just inexplicably lose 3g connectivity. Google around a bit and find out: this is a known problem that many people are dealing with, and HTC/Sprint have acknowledged the issue and are trying to rectify it. Problem is, it isn't fixed. I truly hope that in the near future an OTA update will fix the problems... after all, I'm basically stuck with this phone for the next 23 months. The network issues are bad enough that I really do miss my old Evo 4g, and I'm very tempted to reactivate it.
Conclusion: at the end of the day, the Evo 4g LTE is a phone, and as such I think the network issues are a pretty big deal. If you are on WiFi constantly, then they won't be an issue for you, but if you're dependent upon Sprint's network in any way, be very careful... this phone has some major baggage.
Update 9/25/2012: A couple OTA updates later, and it is still in pretty bad shape. I am very used to 500ms+ ping now, and 0.1Mbps download/upload speeds. 4g coverage is still nonexistant. According to xda and s4gru, this problem is SPECIFIC TO THE EVO 4g LTE. As in an iPhone 5 and SGIII will both connect just fine to 4g, but an Evo in the same room will not.
Try this neat trick: Go to craigslist and search for Evo 4g LTE. See how many nearly new Evos are being sold for less than half the price of a new one? That speaks more volumes than my review does

These post really make me scratch my head...In Memphis LTE is only a month old and only in the northern parts of the city...constant 15mbs+ and elsewhere 4g isnt on yet 3G is maxed out....I never have any problems maintaining a over decent connection on 3G.....it's just odd how much I hear how crappy the ELTE is.....Is it really a bad phone and I'm just in a city where Sprint has it act together or are some of you vice-versa??

My 3g has been much better than my old HTC Hero and better than my Dad's og Evo(not to mention my mom's Samsung Nexus S, My brothers' Samsung, Motorola, and my sister's iCrap 4s).
As long as you stick to stock based roms, you'll be fine. HTC has some great tweaks that cm10 and aosp roms don't have that seem to boost bandwidth and 3g speeds.

Test it out. Set a timer for 13 days just to be sure.. Thats why carriers give you the 14 day trial period to make sure your happy before being stuck 2 more years with them.
I for one am happy with my EVO LTE. I also have a GS3 and from time to time go back and forth.
I had a chance to spend about 3 minutes with this device today at the Sprint store. Love at first sight. I can't put into words how elegantly this phone felt in my hand.
Didn't have time to check out the 3g connectivity, but call quality did seem above average for a Sprint phone.
Can you download a larger format dial pad for this phone (that works properly) ?
