[Q] can't unbrick nt16 - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I was able to get cm 10 on my nook with 10 touch Firmware I loved it worked awesome. The battery died I plugged it in then my wife used it I went crazy on low power then when she policed it back in I believe it weren't into Bootloop and erased everything. When I came back home it was dead. First I tried the cwm SD and could not mount anything, then repart img and got red x, then Adams Linux restore and got blank screen, tried the DD command and get permission denied after every code with CD sdcard #. I would love to try anything I can to get it going.thanks

i can't flash in anything in cwm. Every time I get error can't mount SD card. Is there anyone I can send it to or have remote to see what its doing. I have done everything in every post and still nothing. Please help have big move coming and my boy loves to use it on long drives. Moving family across country in a month.

Yea I get to Cynoboot but black screen anywhere else I go except cwm and get same errors there as cwm Sdcard

I just did 12/31 cm10 acclaim hd img and it goes straight to blank screen. Thanks for the help

Did you extract the sd image from cm-10-20121231-NOOKTABLET-acclaim-HD-SDC-img.rar and write the image to the sdcard (e.g., with win32diskimager or DiskImage_1_6_WinAll), and not just copying the file over to the card?

I extracted img with win ear and write in with win 32 imager. The only thing I could do was USB mount in twrp. The crappy thing is I don't even know how it died I was gone. It worked awesome then when I got back home it was dead.

Are you using Sandisk class 4 or 6 SD cards? All other brands do not work reliably with cm10. Higher sequential read/write speed cards do not have the high RANDOM read/write speeds of the Sandisk class 4 or 6 card.

Yea a SanDisk c4 4GB. I think it is something about not mounting sdcard looks like every one else in these posts can At least do that.

I noticed in Cynoboot it said install zip by sideload? Will I be able to do this. I need time to get drivers installed but I was wondering if it was worth a shot. And if it works is there a reason I'm having trouble installing drivers for cynoboot cwm.

You may want to try again so****e's thread in development to unbrick. His last reply said to use adb shell without the # sign. You should see $ not # in terminal (no su). Maybe that is why it didn't work for you before.
Per So****e:
Nononono. I'm sorry, the # just shows that you are in remote-shell. /sdcard # is just the directory you are in. any of that "$" and symbols at the beginning are just wat you see in the shell. Sorry to confuse anyone, I will put a note in the guide. If it is giving you permission denied, try to use exit, so you are back in adb and then take out the sdcard and put it back in and make sure you mount the sdcard

[Q] "e:Can't mount SD card"

I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't seem to get my damned Fascinate to recognize the SD card.
I was running on some version of a Cyanogen 7 based Rom, I think Runnymede SIII, when the card stopped mounting properly, giving me an error message saying, "blank external SD card: SD card blank or has unsupported file system." When I go into CWM recovery, I can't mount the card at all, I get a message saying e:can't mount sd card.
Anyway, I've flashed through successively earlier and earlier official roms, and now I'm all the way down to stock DL09. No dice.
Any ideas as to how to fix this stupid thing? I don't even care about the storage, I just want to flash CM7 onto the phone and be done with it. I don't suppose there are any ODIN packages for CyanogenMod?

Notice the last ROM Shipyaad was running
@Shipyaad: try error-checking your sd card on your PC. Put in card reader, right click in Windows explorer, choose "properties," goto tools tab, check for errors, check both "surface scan" and "automatically fix errors"
This should get your card working again until you get a new one (it's not a permanent fix)
Has anyone seen John Connor?
Damn.

Hmm. I don't really use the sdcard except to hold a few tunes and some books, I don't even use the camera on that phone. I can't imagine why that particular rom would kill the sdcard though unless it were writing to it all the time...
EDIT: I guess it's time to dig up the old card reader. Sucks, I just moved to a new place and my stuff is still scattered randomly through all these boxes.... gah! Thanks for the idea, I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, it was worth a try. Neither OSX nor Windows were able to read the card either - right clicking on the drive crashed Explorer every time I tried it, and OSX Disk Utility had every option grayed out. Clearly, the card is fooked. Thanks again for the help.

I don't recomend a 32gb sd card either...folks are having issues with them aswell on mtd roms. I use a pny class 10 16gb with no issues.
OK, well.... so I picked up a Sandisk 8gb class 6 card today. Everything seemed to be fine, I was able to flash Cyanogenmod 7 (stable), and I was very happy.
HOWEVER. CWM stopped being able to see the card, and it doesn't appear to post when I've got it plugged into my card reader... When the phone is booted up though, it can read the card no problem. Now what? Re-ODIN CWM? Start from scratch? Get myself a new phone?

What do you mean cwm stoped seeing the card? Are you saying when you go into recovery your get the e: cant mount errors? Also just to make sure, on the stock cm7.1 kernel you cant three finger into recovery oncer your on cm7 or you will get those errors. Only enter recovery by long pressing the power button, select reboot, then recovery.
I am having the same problem. I have tried 4 different SD Cards. 2 of the cards are SDHC, the 1st one I had is fried now, the others can be read by my computer and when the phone is booted, but not in recovery.

Right. When I'm in recovery I'm getting the e: can't mount sdcard error. I don't think I used the three finger method after installing cyanogenmod though I might be mistaken about that. Perhaps re-Odin'ing cwm would help?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Hmm... wiped Dalvik cache --> reboot recovery.
Seems to have fixed the issue for now. Now I'm paranoid that my sdcard is going to be acting up. Will keep an eye on it and update if it breaks again...
I am having the same issue.. The stock Samsung 16GB class 2 that came with the phone started to give me E:Can't mount /sdcard issues.. Bought a Kingston 32GB class 4 card (verified as genuine) and still the problem persists.. Formatted fully, scanned with no errors, yet they all work when the phone boots up.. Ironically this all started when I switched to Pool Party which is MTD based, but I am trying to get back to TW.. Odined the stock EH03 and CWM 3, but I still can't get it to mount /sdcard..
Really burning me that I have this ridiculous issue that I can't get fixed..

Well 32gb cards dont play nice with mtd roms... Also dont buy anything less than a class 6. Pny makes a class 10 8gb for 12.99 or the 16gb for 20.00. Thats what i run and all my issues are gone. My stock card absolutely hated mtd based roms. Took me a week of trying crazy **** to get on cm7 only for it to come up damaged a day later. Works fine on touch wiz tho.

I finally got it fixed. Turned out that voodoo lagfix was turned on and the system not converted to EXT4.. Had to enable voodoo on boot so that the system would be converted to EXT4 and then I was able to access the sd card in CWM..
Funny you mentioned that I should get a class 10 because I was under the impression that anything over class 4 suffers from poor random read speeds and the benefit is only faster writing. And in applications like mobile phones, read speeds are more important for accessing data.. Double the storage capacity and faster class than my original Samsung 16gb class 2, I think I'm ahead of the game in any regards at this point..

my class 10 consistently reads between 15-18mb/s on antutu so Im not sure where you got that from. How was voodoo lagfix turned on if you odined stock eh03?
Format it!
Try formatting it to FAT32.

I searched the forums on here and deducted that information from what people were saying.. Again, I'm just going by what I read on XDA..
As far as lag fix being on, I am completely lost on how or why it was enabled (I was on MTD rom) .. I odined the KGB kernel and converted to EXT4 on boot.. When I rebooted back into recovery, the card could be accessed.. I then flashed the SC.05 and the conversion back to RFS occurred on first boot (don't know why).. Rebooted to recovery after that and converted back to EXT4 and I'm doing good now..
All I know is that I'm able to access the card in CWM now and my phone hit over 2000 on quadrant for the first time ever using this ROM.. Only lag I notice is using Gallery to open my pictures..

[Q] Need help unbricking nook tablet 8gb

I have a nook tablet 8gb, I can still boot cm7 from sd card so the thing isn't a total brick.
I started with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553 and that worked great but i still didn't like the nook menus and stuff so i decided to try cm7. I put it on the only sd card I had at the time for a test, an 8gb type 2. It worked great except for a bit laggy. I bought a 32 gig type 10, a little quicker but still lagged a bit. Also the 32 gig wouldn't boot unless i was usb tethered.
So I decided to try to put cm7 internal. I tried about a dozen times to get cwm to boot off a sd card but it never seemed to go for it so i used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630. But that doesn't seem to work on my nook I had the same problem as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23636087
I tried the method they posted in their thread (writing the cyanoboot recovery_512.img to /dev/block/mmcblk0p3. This seemed to boot in to a working cwm. I tried to burn the cm7 internal to the ram, but once i did it would still always boot to the cyanboot (no menu) strait in to cwm so I couldn't actully use it. At this point I decided that the 16g has much better support and i should just trade it in on the 14 day thing so i tried to return it to stock. I tried to burn the modified zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23483625&postcount=4
after that i tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23384587&postcount=77 which also did not work, (it showed the box then turned off)
So my internal is probably all messed up by now, but I can still use the external sd boot if nothing else)
Any help would be appreciated.
Use Adam's unbrick total wipe for 8GB Noot Tablet. You will need another sdcard if you don't want to lose the setup of your actual sdcard running CM7.. well you could create an image of your entire sdcard but you will need ubuntu, adb bla bla bla so better get another one.
~ Veronica
I tried the unbrick image it didn't seem to work. It shows the box and then nothing.
I'll try it again.
Also kind of curious why one sd card would boot fine while the other one would require the power cable to boot.
Tried it again, same result. Boot up on the sd card. I see the box, then blank screen, wait 30 mins reboot without sd card and just get a black screen.

Can you boot into CWM that is your last chance, i can give you the link for the 8GB partition images so you can flash them while in CWM but as i said you will need ubuntu installed in a virtual machine and adb.
Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23016403&postcount=1
I don't know which partition of the 8GB NT model is "rom" so if someone could post the output of:
~# parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 print
Once we know that you have to copy the image to the root of your sdcard
the code to flash the partition image will be:
~$ cd ~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools
~$ ./adb devices
(Make sure your device gets recognized)
~$ ./adb shell
~# dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk0pX of=/dev/block/mmcblk0pX
* Where X is the number of the rom partition
* The images that Celtic posted don't end with .img but hopefully works that is fixable.
~ Veronica
partly solved with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562130
Made sd card from image and then put the nooktablet_1_4_2_update.zip from b&n as factory.zip into the recovery folder
boot from sd card, hold n then select alternate boot, wait a few minutes till green check mark appears
Still doesn't boot without sd card.
Booting from sd card to cyanoboot, and selecting boot from emmc boots to nook setup, but hangs when trying to enable wi-fi
also still doesn't boot with no sd card
If I read corrcectly, you didn't successfully put on cm7? Depending on whereit failed, your original factory reset may still be intact. If you havent tried already, With the system off and no sd,Press power and quickly (while holding power)also press the n button. This should bring you to the option for factory reset. When you get there, is that option there at all? Because if not, firmware is probably too corrupted to change from the device itself, and youll probably have to change via data connection from computer.
no go on the factory reset option.
Why dont you try the UNBRICK method i posted

If you have questions you can post them there

I'm rooting a NT for a friend using SD Card. I just did their kids' Nook Colors no sweat. This one boots CM7 when I plug it into the wall, but not otherwise. Is there a way to make this thing boot of the SD card all the time? How would I set the sdcard partition to bootable (it seems like it must be, for it to ever work).

This may help also, here's the video. "You don't need to install ubuntu to do this.
Basically quick format fat32 in windows on a spare sd card and not your main sd
extract the 4 files to sd
download and burn ubuntu cd, boot ubuntu cd you just made and skip 7:02 in video to demonstrate setting the two flags "boot and lba" apply the change to this on your sd card.
you are all set. Good luck:victory:

thanks digimax, i have read that several times over and have tried everything i can think of. i have used different sd cards, different usb cables, usb ports on my machine. i even went out and bought a brand new 8 and 16GB class4 sds and still nothing. i have used win 32 disk imager, acronis dd, ubuntu live, and fedora core that i have dual boot on my machine. i have downloaded the image from 4 different sources( using alberts method) and tried each of them numerous times. is it possible that my NT is unrootable? would it help if i downgraded from 1.4.3? if anyone has a verified working link on an image ill try that. if i can get CWM going then i can take it from there as far as kernels and roms, its just getting to that point that is so frustrating

Just to confirm: what you burn to the SD card (using win32diskimager) is the .img file extracted from inside the downloaded zip file, and not the zip file itself?

I extracted the zip which contained win32diskwhatever and the image file i used win32 in admin mode to write the image and create the partition on the sd card. im currently abandoning that route though and am just going to try breaking down and flashing CM10.1 on it. i saw a post where you had stated that that was an old way so im going to try something newer. i have all the files downloaded and have built the partitions using mini tool partition manager im copying them over now but i think it will be tomorrow before i try to flash ill let you know if it works, and just to be clear when i flash the CM10 on the sd card i can remove it and the NT will still boot CM10?

If you flash onto and run CM off an SD card (e.g., as described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36685310&postcount=1), that CM10 SD card has to stay in the SD card slot in order for your NT to run CM10.
If you want to be able to run CM10 without an SD card you'd have to flash CM10 internally on EMMC (e.g., see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43326042&postcount=123) to replace whatever ROM (stock or otherwise) you currently have.
Note thatSD-based installation and EMMC-based installation use different versions of ROM zip files which are not interchangeable, so make sure you pick the right version.

ok i tried using the premade image and putting it on the sd card to boot from. i made sure card was flagged as primary active 0x0C LBA and it was set to boot( if that makes any sense, been up too long lol ) that didnt work. so i tried to build the card my self reading through several times and double checking as i went. still nothing when i try to boot up with the usb cable. i have been using the stock cable could that be a problem? this is what i came up with when the NT booted normal (attachment below) can you tell did i do something wrong? would it be easier to throw CM onto the eMMC? if so can you link me to a version of CM that would work on the NT 8GB? thanks in advance!
Personally, I had trouble booting & running SD cards. I'm convinced it wasn't hardware but my noobness! Since then I've always loaded only to emmc. I also had trouble going directly & straight to CM10 roms from the B&N 1.4whatever OS.
So, looking for a recovery + rom that matched, I used Indirect's app to get cwm 5, then had no trouble loading a CM9 rom (all to emmc). Once CM9 was up & running good, I used Goo Manager to load an updated TWRP recovery suitable for CM10, then Cm10.1, etc. That's what worked for me & to this day I see no need to boot from SD's. Just me tho.

If booting of a pre-made image does not work, there might be a flaw with your NT that precludes it from booting off SD card, and if this is true I am not aware of any way to root or flash stock ROM onto emmc if your NT is currently running stock.

ok that doesnt really make sense, i havent seen anyone else complaining about having trouble and not being able to get it to go at all. im not saying impossible more improbable i guess, anything is possible. i have been working with my wifes NT today and im not having any luck getting hers to boot android or root. ray waldo said that team b has a version of cm7 that will boot without root but i cant even get that to come up. her NT is 8GB as well. if there is some kind of work around that anyone knows of please share. id be willing to donate if you guys think of a fix. thanks

It's indeed true that there really doesn't seem to be anyone not being able to get their NT to boot from sd, provided they follow suggestions. So I repeat the questions I asked in your own topic (and please, try to stay within one thread to maximize the chance of getting this sorted!):
1. Are you 100% you are dealing with a Tablet and not a Color? (Model no fr Tablet 8GB is 250A)
2. Are you using a SanDisk class 4 sd card? (And burn it according to instructions)
3. Have you tried turning the device off, inserting the card and then insert USB cable connected to power (not computer!)

Another thing to try is using a different SD card reader/writer.

I've been having problems with my 8gb tablet as well. I have tried all three of your suggestions above. Is there any way to set the 8gb tablet back to a later version like 1.4.0? I've only seen resets for the 16gb.

ok through a series of unfortunate events and through no fault of my own i now no longer have a NT but i do have a nook color now. for those of you wondering i DID have a tab but the screen ended up mysteriously shattering. wife was trying to be nice and ordered me what she believed to be a tablet but a color shipped instead. still trying to decide if i want to do anything with that but thats for a different thread. so i still dont know what happened the tab wouldnt boot CM10 before it broke ( or after either lol ) but i pulled the sd out and tried it again in my wifes tab using the wall charger to jumpstart it and it booted CM right up. so i guess i just got the crap draw out of the nooks we bought at the exact same time. still trying to figure out how i can pin this on best buy for selling me a faulty device lol, but i just wanted to say thanks for everyones help and feedback. when i threw the sd into my wifes tab it loaded CWM and CM10 just fine. ordered her a class 6 san disk sd to put in it to see if that helps with some of the lag issues.:good:
Ok, so I'd like to piggyback off this before starting my own thread. I have a bunch of Nook Colors that I have no problem booting off of SD cards for my kids. Now the 8gb Tablet is proving much harder for me. I've redone the SD card method 4x by two different methods and I keep getting the same result: It boots up fine, allows me to create the google account and even dowload apps. However, out of nowhere it will reboot and then I am stuck on the CM10 boot screen that just loops forever. I am repartioning a 16 GB card, making it active, windisk img the zip file to the card fine.... Does my symptom sound specific of something? Let me know. Thanks!

I encountered this same problem for the first time yesterday when I tried out a CM10.2 SD build.
If you are using 10.2 you might want to go back to using 10.1 for a while longer.
Yeah, but what if I'm on CM 10.1? I used one build from June (2x) then one from Aug (2x) and now have the same symptoms. This does not sound indicative of something specific? Like aren't some 8gb tablets troublesome from SD? Or is this a user error still of some sort?

[Q] Think I lost my paddle...

Ok, without getting into the cascading series of screwiness along the way, I think I've managed to effectively brick my phone. I'm posting in hopes that the part of my brain screaming "No, you're missing something" is right.
e970, already rooted, running CyanogenMod 10.1 and TWRP 2.6.3.0. In pursuit of a "clean slate" to deal with remnants of sloppy uninstallations, I thought I'd clear everything with TWRP and just put CM back. So, I pulled out my SD card with my saved data, and had TWRP wipe everything, including the CM zip on the root of the built-in storage. I copied the newer CM and GAPPS to a spare SD card, plugged it in...
and I found the external SD card wasn't recognized by TWRP. There's only 1 storage location listed, which is the built-in area I just wiped.
I can't get the phone to be recognized by a desktop running Windows 8.1. I have freshly installed the drivers, downloaded the SDK, rebooted, etc. from that side. The phone is never recognized by either Windows or ADB. So, I dug out the laptop I originally installed CM from some time back (last year?). Same story - no Windows or ADB recognition.
Ok, fine - maybe the USB port is dying on me. I'll try formatting the SD card and see if that's the issue. FAT32, copy the files back, still no luck. Great. Maybe it's the card, so I copy my data and put the zips on the original card I had in the phone. Still no dice.
So, here I am. No OS installed, no image on the internal drive to recover from, TWRP won't recognize my external card(s), and I can't get anything to acknowledge the phone via USB to do a sideload.
Am I missing something, or did I completely hose myself?
I forgot to mention: I did try different cables and ports on both computers before arriving at the idea the e970 USB port may have having issues.
Have you tried a different SD card?
SD card have a finite lifespan, and I've seen them fail n the middle of normal use. The first thing I'd try would be a different SD.
If that doesn't work, you may have to just LGPNST back to bone stock.
(You may want to play with the "Partition SD Card" option under "Advanced" in TWRP. It'll wipe any data on the card so back up to your computer first, but this may kick the SD card into being recognized by the phone [though I dont know how windows would react to it])

I did, in fact. I tried it on a spare first, so I didn't have to worry about erasing the data on the SD card I pulled out of the phone. When that failed, I tried copying the zips onto my original card, which was also not picked up. I've found other posts on here that suggest this particular version of TWRP had issues reading external cards, but I don't see any way to get a different one on the phone at this point.

I might be missing the mark here, but wouldn't this format the already-empty internal storage (since it's the one selected) rather than the external card?

If you can boot the phone into fastboot (should be VOL UP + Power), you should be able to flash the recover that way with:
fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery>.img
You'll need to get the .img instead of a flashable zip obviously, but that can be done even by grabbing the "recovery.img" file from a flashable recovery zip.

I've honestly not messed with this option; I just know I've solved similar problems with flash drives in the past by formatting in different ways.

How is he going to do that? He can't get a PC to recognize the phone.
Maybe try a Linux box? You could make an Ubuntu live USB stick with some extra storage space on it, and try running adb from there.

There's a thought... I think I have a Knoppix disk around here that I could boot from. I don't have high hopes, since it's not being recognized by the laptop I did this on originally, but I'll give anything a shot at this point. I'll let you know how it goes.
No dice. ADB gives me the same response whether the phone is at the fastboot screen or the sideload inside TWRP.

Check ALL your cords
Another update. After presuming me e970 dead, going to Best Buy to shop for an AT&T Next upgrade, running the HTC One m8 for a couple days, I get a wild hair to try the HTC cord on the old phone. Oddly enough, it works and the phone was picked up immediately. I've already pushed CM over via adb, and and working on gapps now.
Apparently both of the cords I tried previously weren't up to spec for smartphone use. I'm going to have to come up with a labelling system on what's good for trickle charges and what's good for data.
I'm not sure what a return will do to my upgrade status, but I'd rather wait on a new phone. It even looks like I know what I'll get. Thanks for the ideas along the way.
Nice, glad you found a solution. Unless things have changed with the new plans, you should be OK to return the phone within 14 days and keep your upgrade.
