[Q] Wifi tethering - HTC Rezound

hey, ive been looking for a app (can be a rooted app since i am rooted) to send wifi without making me pay for it.
so far i was using ------> code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether
it came with my ROM Ineffabilis Deus v1.2 ,does it cost anything to use?
it uses 3g/4g and not actual wifi so i dont know if it charges me or not but im fine with using 3g/4g as long as it doesn't make me pay for it
but using actual wifi would be best
any suggestions?
thanks for the help :good:

wifi tether is free as long as you have unlimited data and don't overuse use it... use at your own risk

thx

Per FCC ruling you can actually tether LTE and Verizon can't do a damn thing about it.

[Q] built-in Hotspot vs. Wifi Tether?

What's the difference between the built-in wifi hotspot app that Sprint gave me vs. rooting and installing the wifi tether program I found?
Pete
They gave you??
You normally have to pay per month for the Sprint hotspot. Wireless tether is free if rooted.
The app is on my phone. I tested it, and there was no warning about any potential cost, so it's free, no?

I wouldn't think so but who knows. Better check with Sprint first before taking the chance of racking up a huge bill. I think it is normally around $30/month for that feature.

OK, thanks. That make sense - otherwise, I could see no benefit to wifi tether.
I'll confirm it did not cost me anything to test and complain if it did!
has anyone confirmed this???
Mine does turn on and the only warning it gives is about battery. As soon as I turn it off though I get a mobile ip registration error on the phone.

I've been told that the built in WiFi hotspot is a monthly charge so if you don't want to pay for it you should definitely root your phone and use WiFi Tether. I would post a link but I'm not allowed so just Google "WiFi Tether beta" and go to the second result. Good luck!

You can root it and use barnacle, or use the hotspot feature under the "wireless and network settings" if AT&T hasn't disabled it. I was planning on getting one earlier today, but wasn't able to get to the store before work.
Check the settings and see if "Tethering & portable hotspot" feature is there. If it is it will just use your regular data plan.
Ok thanks im going to just wait for a root to come out.

When I picked up my phone at AT&T they asked me if I wanted the family (?) tether plan for $45/mo. I said no. When I checked the phone at home, the tether option was there, so is it cool to tether the phone without getting a nasty gram?

The moment you turn that on and start using it you will get a notice that you will need to change to that tether plan. Unless you get PDAnet or root the phone and use one of those apps.
I rooted , used Titanium Backup and froze tethering manager app, wifi tethering now works fine with my android tablet.

Any link to rooting the AT&T version? Want to root and use the built in tether. As of now, when you try to use the tether it will say you need to have the tether option. Don't want to pay the extra for using it a few times a month.

Yep, you're right. I just tried it.
I guess I root.
You need to root the phone and unintall the Tethering Manager in order to use the built-in tethering features without paying for it.
Just remember that a lot of people have been getting nastygrams from AT&T even without interference from tethering manager. There has been a lot of speculation as to the cause, but naive tethering is detectable in a number of ways, so don't be surprised if they suddenly decide to up your bill by $20.
Has anyone actually used Barnacle with this phone?
I rooted and installed Barnacle, which has to be downloaded from their site because it is blocked in Market. I start Barnacle and it has SU privilege, but no device can see the hotspot it creates. Even when I create the WiFi network there is no connection.
I'm having the same problem as far as my phone telling me I need a tethering plan. So I called At&t & they said I'd have to basically lose my grandfathered in plan of Unlimited just so I can surf the net for an extra $45 a mnth!! WTF!! I Didn't have this problem with my Cappy.. If you want to tether without paying for it, you have to root and freeze/remove tethering manager, or use a third-party app. Plus, you still risk AT&T slapping you with the overpriced tethering plan if they catch you. Not really sure there is anything you can do.
I figured as much. I never had a problem up til today when I got my new Gs2. I don't tether much at all to be honest with you. But at&t screwed me cause now I'm without Internet so I can't root even if I wanted to. I think I have no choice but to get a wireless Internet card til I root & find a decent ROM. Thanks a bunch for the advice though.. Much appreciated!!

Earlier this year I used the hotspot on my Dell Streak to tether my laptop for an entire week. Never heard anything from AT&T. It has a stock ROM from another region and is rooted. I haven't unloaded any stock apps on it.

You don't necessarily have to download it from their site. If you have a wifi connection you should be able to put the phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and connect that way. Either that or remove the sim card and get on wifi. As long as the sim is either removed or disabled and you are on wifi the market will not be filtered.
Maybe you're trying to connect devices to it that can either only see an infrastructure mode access point or are set to only connect to those. My laptop didn't see mine at first, but then I changed the setting in the wireless to show all types of connections (ad-hoc and infrastructure) and it worked. I had to actually modify the wifi_supplicant file on my moto Xoom for it to see ad-hoc connections.

I never had any issues or nasty-grams from AT&T for wifi tether, but I only used it when I needed too which honestly, wasn't too often.

3G Network on SGP?

Could you possibly get a mobile 3G network on the SGP 5.0?

Well, since there is no 3g antenna, that means there is no possible way to get 3g, unless you buy a mobile hotspot.

If your on AT&T and have a non-smart phone Samsung Mythic... you can tether it to your iPod Touch (granted you have one) and make an Ad-Hoc network with it via the wireless, then connect to it on your SGP. Battery life is fantastic so you can just keep the other two devices (the phone and iPod) in a backpack or something near you. Tedious but it works, especially since the data is unlimited on a non-smartphone plan (and they don't notice, or at least haven't for the last 2 years) if you Bluetooth DUN tether.

As far as I know, bluetooth tethering won't work with Android. So you'd need a phone with WiFi to share the 3G connection over. If your blackberry doesn't have WiFi, you'd need another device that does as the middle-man. Which becomes a bit of a hassle.
Google your phone and it's modem and make sure you won't get any extra charges for tethering (most phones WILL lead to charges without a tethering plan on unlimited data, but some seem to be hidden). And if you do, just pay for a tethering plan I suppose.

Then there is probably a guide somewhere on how to share it, I don't know whether or not AT&T will see it though, so be warned, I wouldn't risk a smartphone unlimited plan for that kind of thing. In my case, I pay for non-smartphone unlimited data and tether it so I don't really lose anything if I'm caught (It's been over 2 years so far) since it's like $10/month for AT&T 3G HSDPA.

I don't think Bluetooth DUN is possible over Android. I know it is on iOS, but I don't think anyone has gotten it to work with non-Android phones (like a Blackberry or my Samsung featurephone).
You could use your BlackBerry to make a Wireless network, but that COULD impose extra charges depending on your carrier (AT&T charges a good $10+ extra (can't remember the exact).

That depends on the Carrier. Here in the states AT&T requires that you go to a new plan (limited) and charges you for the privilage of sharing your data. Or you can try CM's new undetectable tethering as it is done at a lower level than the providers see.

Interesting, have more info on this? Considering that AT&T detects tethering using browser useragent now (DO NOT USE Dolphin HD or any other browser that uses a desktop useragent on AT&T if you're on an unlimited plan!), there's no way to do undetectable tethering without an encrypted VPN.
To others - whether tethering costs you depends on your carrier. If you're in North America, it's basically guaranteed that your provider wants you to get a special tethering plan. It's usually possible to get around this, but as discussed above - providers try really hard to find ways to bust you. Tethering a Player should not cause any of the AT&T triggers discussed above though - I've been tethering my Tab 10.1 for ages without issue.

The bottom line is No. This device DOES NOT have a hidden/internal antenna and you can't mod it to have one. "External devices" would be a hotspot or cell phone that is sharing it's connection via tethering. Though I wouldn't consider that "3G for SGP", more like, "WiFi for SGP" since that's all it is; You can't make calls over the voice network through that data through your normal phone.
Kind of a silly question in general heh, but unless you go through a good deal of trouble to either get a hotspot device and carry it around, or do the Phone -> iPod Touch -> SGP thing I do; There really isn't any other way to do this.
I have an Optimus phone. Just added a Widgetsoid2 Hotspot toggle, push the button, and presto SGP connected. It is against terms of service on Virgin Mobile, but I plan on getting rid of my phone and getting Truconnect mifi. $5/mo Hotspot (plus .039 per mb). I use less than 100mb on 3G now that I have my SGP5.
You can make calls on wifi or 3G with GrooveIP. That's all I use on wifi, and I tested it tethered to my phone and also works fine.

Need Hotspot? Look no further.

This method has been used on the GS3 as well so whoever gave that advice. TY
However, All you need to do is go to settings -> more settings -> mobile hotspot and set up your SSID and password. Afterwards, head the the play store and search https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=bohlool.net.toogleHotspot&hl=en and install. Go to your widgets and place it somewhere on your homescreen and tap for instant success. Thanks!
P.S - Root not required
Hopefully, this will be more stable than Wireless Tether which more or less causes phone to reboot and how frequent depends on the version used.

Does this not activate Verizon Hotspot charges??
Had the same question as above...
When I was testing out foxfi, as soon as I turned on foxfi, it would also activate the "Mobile Hotspot" icon that came with the phone. Does it charge me for it through Verizon?
After I deleted foxfi and tried to use the mobile hotspot directly, it asks me to sign up with a plan...
Does this mean that using third party tethering programs activating the "Mobile Hospot" that came with the phone doesn't incur any extra charges?
Thanks~
works perfect thanks man!
Does this bypass Verizon's tether charge?
Works fine here. If this did activate Verizon hot spot I believe it would make you sign up. Quick way to check would be at my Verizon and see if your plan changed mine hasnt
I just tried it and it did take me to the Verizon hotspot sign up. Unless there's another way to use it you're not gonna' tether for free with this.
It's an easy way to turn your paid-for hotspot on though.
I am using widgetsoid to make a toggle, it's pretty much the same thing, it activates the Verizon hotspot without having to register.
This way is more stable then foxfi, I would lose my connection all the time with that one.

depends on your data plan. Old unlimited data plans will have to sign up for the hotspot add on (30 bucks a month). Those on tiered plans or family plans shouldn't have to pay extra as its included now.

I can confirm this bypasses the subscription. When running without the app it asks to subscribe. With the little app it with will not ask to subscribe and do native tether...

Good thing you can decline OTAs if you so desire. I don't think VZW cares that much about us tethering anymore, especially since they signed that agreement with the government to not block tethering as a condition of buying more spectrum. That's why tethering is included free now with the shared data plans. There are so few of us left who still have unlimited data, just don't all torrent 100 GB over the cell connection and VZW will probably leave us alone.
I have turned on the stock Hotspot, that came on the GN2, and it seems to work great. I was not asked to sign up for a Hotspot plan either. Is this unusual?

Have old Droid and was using Foxfi. Loved it, but now won't work with new OS on Note 2. Have unlimited data and need wifi tethering.
