The Best Buy website still shows the Flyer @ $299, but both online and all the stores I checked are out.
Any thoughts/news on whether this is due to strong sales or end-of-life? I enjoy mine so much my mom decided to get one, but now we can't find one.

I realize that ROM development for the view and flyer is different. However, are they both equally rootable? Do they both receive the same regular updates from HTC, including the most recent 2.3.4?
Will they both receive the same HC update in the [indefinite] future?
I'm just wondering if there is a risk to buying the View over the flyer
I just got mine from Techforless. Delivered earlier than expected; it was refurbished, but looks brand new; and works like a charm. Meanwhile, Ijust finished following globatron's awesome guide to installing Honeycomb with no problems at all.
mcoup10off should get you 10% off for another day, i think (found the code online).
No prob rooting and the last update came quicker than the flyer, hc, still waiting.

Two days ago, I checked Best Buy online all every store in my area had them in stock. Yesterday, none did. My guess is that there will be some kind of sale.
Playbooks were recently sold for $200, I bet the same will happen with Flyers.

You are thinking about the HP touchpad. The playbook can be bought right now for $200 out the door.

You are right. $200 is such a good price. And it's better than Kindle Fire.
Right. I own a Playbook too and the Flyer is a much better tablet at the moment but the Playbook has some advantages too and MIGHT get better over time.

Has RIM released the update to allow you to run Android completely on it? That was the reason I didn't get it in the first place (other than it being a crackberry).

There is an open beta that lets you install Android Apps.
There are limitiations. Anything that was developed using the Android SDK won't work. Probably about 50% of Android Apps work. Kindle works. At this point, I would not buy a Playbook thinking that you can run the Android Apps that you want to though. Many won't work.
RIM's appworld is actually starting to fill out with some decent apps. EA games like Madden. Gameloft games.
The Kindle HTML5 Web App also works.

There have been plently of updates but none of them have expanded the feature set much. There is a big update scheduled for February that will bring a lot of new features. If this goes off as planned, the Playbook will be pretty competitive with Android and iOS.
I paid full price and feel screwed but if you can get one for $200, I think its worth the risk. the Playbook OS is really fast and fun to use. Hopefully one day you can do alot with it.

All true! My point is that for $200 it might be worth seeing how it plays out.
I bought a playbook for $199 and I do have to say that the multi-tasking and internet browser is unmatched in regards to other tablets. Part of the reason is that it was designed from the ground up with tablets in mind. Unfortunately, it is missing features such as android apps, email, and a kindle app. I put it back in the box for now and will continue to use my flyer for now. I will play with it again in February to see if the promised update makes this tablet more usable for me (I don't have a BB phone so I can't use the link feature).

So I was looking at this, can you use this via wifi? Is it the same as the Flyer just with larger SD storage? I just notice is says 4g, don't those usually need a data plan of some sort to run? Where as the Flyer has the wifi and the 3g model and the best buy one was just a wifi so it didn't need a service contract. I just don't want to buy this and then have to have a plan for it rather than just wifi.

You dont "need" a data plan you could just run it wifi. The Flyer and View are not exactly the same though. The roms and ruu's are specific, in that regard the flyer gets a bit more love. I also wouldn't be shocked to see the Flyer get the official update to HC before the View does. No carrier testing involved.

Thanks for the info lrs421. So I think I'll pass on that then... I called Best Buy because I ordered one yesterday and it said it was in stock online. then today looked at my order and it said backordered. When I called they said It was BO for up to 30 days but should be no longer than that. Not sure what to do, wait it out and hope i get one, or go to that tech for less and get an "open Item" one.... decisions...
I just wanna say that my flyer is the best device that I ever bought because my flyer is very fluid on gingerbread latest update no lag no freeze very silky smooth (its amazing with old hardware) .. but I sad because the forum and development is not very active.. now I thinking to buy HTC one x which have a good activity development but I'm really hard to decide because the flyer is very functional with higher display and I love it...
Sometime too I'm audiophile person who needs portable handset to used in my pocket as an mp3 player( I don't want to buy ipod)..but HTC Flyer cant in my pocket -.- .. its worth to upgrade to HTC one x?

Do the HTC One phones have microsd slots? I nearly bought the HTC One S from T-Mob, and the only thing that stopped me was its use of micro-SIMs. I wanted a phone that I could use for international travel and thought it best to stay away from the non-standard SIMs for now. So I bought a Samsung Galaxy Nexus from Google's Play Store instead (and I'm almost regretting it).

It would, it would just take some very minor APK changes i believe
So dont give up hope
Yeah the lack of launchers is probably the worst thing about being on honeycomb. Sense launcher/AOSP launcher, nearly identical aside from the fact that the AOSP one sports a sense-ish look and supports the sense widgets. Its not terrible, but the lack of folder support sucks, and there really isn't any real alternatives for honeycomb other than Go Launcher HD, but even then you loose your WYSIWYG widgets, and the launcher is still in early stages and imo kind of an ugly beast at this point. All the phone launchers work fine, but they don't support the honeycomb look. ADW EX is supposed to work pretty well for honeycomb but they hosed it with the last update...in December so I think Anderweb is gone.
So I do hope this launcher does pan out to give us another alternative.

I acquired an APK just now. Works on HC, will test on ICS soon.
I will drop a hint: GIYF
If you guys want a small review or anything if it's worth your money just ask.
$10? Jeez my interest just faded. No matter how cool it is its just a launcher. I have a hard time spending that kind of cash on anything for android! It's like that spb shell launcher. It looks gorgeous but it's $14. What if I don't like it? Then I got 15 minutes to get a refund.
Maybe they should give you a week trial with this stuff. The money might be worth it but you just don't know. It's still in beta so hopefully they have a trial when it launches
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I honestly wouldn't call it a beta. It's more of an alpha as you can't add your own widgets or have your on wallpaper.

This is interesting because I read that HTC is throwing in the towel on tablets for right now because they can't compete in the market. But then again, they said they'd stop making a million phones a year, and they're still releasing phones over and over. So....
I think that was a fake... Someone released some leaked pictures of it or something and it was too ugly to be believable. And then HTC confirmed it was dropping out of the tablet market as well as dropping support for the first Flyer.

well why would they release it before the One? if they want the phone out there, it seems like post-One is the way to go. You get people to buy your flagship first. If there are others who didnt want the flagship or just never even considered it because of price, then they'll be up for this phone. Many who would buy the mini would have never bought the One in the first place, but you have to lead with your flagship.

Yeah it should be free. HTC is probably doing to make some money from this because people will think its a smaller HTC One. Its not. It's **** that looks the same.
Free? Why would it be free? The phone makes total sense... Once the max comes out they'll have a perfect line of One devices. Small, Medium, and Large.
There has to be some differences in specs between the three.
And why wright the specs off as crappy? They almost match the moto x at half the price. And there's plenty of reviews that say the mini runs great.

Well I ended up getting the HTC First for my wife and a mini for the grandkid (she's paying for it).
It shouldn't take long to get Facebook disabled on the First. She been using an iPhone the past 2 years, so plain Android should be fine for her.

My cousin just got the One Mini and the first thing she said about it is it's the same size as an iPhone. It's her first Android phone and so far no complaints. It's just a watered down One but it is quite smooth and snappy for those specs plus its got the front speakers and most of the perks of the One. For a mid range phone, it sure can't be beaten!
