Complete noob here. Just received my Note2, and am concerned about the vulnerability issue. I know I can do the quick "1 click" method, but am thinking I might want to just unlock and flash Beans new ROM. I have searched, but haven't found a definitive answer as to whether this ROM patches the vulnerability. If it doesn't, what are my options for fixing it while still using this ROM?
Thank you.
The fix is kernel based, not ROM related, so it should manifest itself on any ROM using an afflicted kernel.

Okay, that is what I thought the answer might be. Which leads to two other questions:
1) After switching to "Beans" ROM, can i then proceed with the "1 click" fix?
2) Looks like Perseus is being used with this ROM, but are there any others that I should consider?
Thanks again!

You can grab the app here to see if you are vulnerable I am using the custom kernel and it showed my phone was not vulnerable so I would say perseus 29.1 kernel does have the fix installed.

Thank you the chain fire was a better app than the one I used. The first one said I was good when chain fire said it was not. Got it all patched up now and set to booot thanks!
Thanks for the clarification I also read the kernel had a fix and that was not true.
I flashed the Perseus Kernel thinking it would fix the cpu vulnerability the dev says he has a low level fix in the kernel now. Is this not the case or does it still leave holes ?

According to chain fire app I was still vulnerable with the same kernel as you. That is what I thought also use the chain fire app.

Awesome job Geeknik, quick question:
If we wanted to get back to stock, how would we go about that? Is there a kernel removal method? Flash stock kernel? If so, where can I find the stock kernel? Thanks and sorry for the trouble.
Does any one know why, I just flashed 1.76 and now maps fc. Also what to do about it?

Try uninstalling and installing again maps.apk?
I'm having GPS issues on 1.76, even after 5 minutes of standing outside in a open area the GPS will never fully lock. My GPS locks within seconds when using 1.54 so it is def something going on with the 1.76 kernel. Let me know if I can help you debug this further.

Ok, so we can just flash the kernel without wiping? Do we need DJ05?
After we flash, can we still do Nandroid and restore Nandroid?
How easy is it to remove the kernel and would it require wiping?
I've heard nothing but good things about these kernels...really eager to try one out and finally improve battery life.

I dont think you NEED dj05, but that is the biggest improvement for battery life I have found. The 1.54 and 1.76 kernels were made for dj05 and im sure work best with it. The first one is for di01 and should not be used if you have dj05. But stupid fast is stupid fast and thank you geeknik for your work. As far as wiping, I think it is a good idea to wipe everytime some times twice to get rid of the klinging on things.

Hi all,
I ordered a SGP 4.0 and will receive it today. Should I root it as soon as I receive it? Does 'rooting' make any changes to the stock firmware? Does it change anything else compare to a stock SGP beside that it will have 'root' permission?
I am new to the Android environment as I have never owned one before, but I am an embedded software guy by trade (on a totally different discipline and processor family) so I'm not a stranger in the firmware world and Linux environment.
Later, I like to learn programming/hacking the Android for fun and hope that I will be able to contribute something.
Thanks for any comment.

No, all it does is just give you root access.
Not really, unless you want to use Titanium Backup. Mine is rooted (I think, can't remember lol) and I really don't see any other advantages except for overclock apps or other root-only apps.
Overall, it's not necessary. Just flash a ROM (I prefer CM7 or Klin's Klassic ROM) and a kernel (NOTE: Steve's kernel for the US and INTL 4.0 may cause bootloops if you boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery).
Thanks! I appreciate the replies. So, if I want to root, I just grab the latest version of Superoneclick and have at it?
If I were you I would wait a little longer and get some more information about this, beofre rooting. I rooted my Player using Superuser, just the latest one I could find.

Hey, I'm a huge novice at all of this. I've had my player for a few months and I've heard of tons of people that have rooted their device.
What does it allow you to do? Is it how you get more themes?
I'm very unintelligent on this subject so any clarification would be great...

Thanks!

Inside that rar file is a tar.md5 that contains both the stock rom and kernel. It's like right out of the box except it is pre-rooted, so you'd need to unroot to get 100% factory.
Thanks for the response. According to that thread, the ROM has the Chainfire 3D driver installed. I couldn't find much information about it except that it only potentially increases graphics performance. Does anyone know if it does anything for everyday performance?

I am pretty sure they patched this exploit with the 4.0.4 udate. I don't think you will have any luck with ExynosAbuse. You will have to use more traditional methods. Start with the stickies in the q&a section of this forum.

Now that you mention it, I was at 4.04, not 4.1.2. According to my notes XynosAbuse was successful for me. Regardless, it still means my experience doesn't help the OP, since it was the wrong version anyway.

I read through more of the XynosAbuse thread and confirmed. Yes it works on 4.04, the patch was in 4.1.2. So, to the OP: XynosAbuse will not work for you. Sorry to mis-lead. Glad I could at least clarify what _won't_ work...

I have spent the last 3 hours trying to educate myself on all this stuff. I have an AT&T I777 running the 4.1.2 that AT&T released recently. It runs fine but I've read so much of the advantages of rooting and custom roms that I figured I'd give it a try. This couldn't have been easier! I understand that the way to understand if the root was successful, I should have the "Superuser" app which I do! The whole process took maybe 5 minutes! Thank you for posting this!
Well yes super user will be installed but that's just an app used to allow apps superuser access. That isn't what roots the phone or anything. You could have root access without having that app installed, it just would be far less secure because you need some way to regulate what apps can do what.

Not possible. Locked bootloader. I doubt if it will get unlocked. But, search around for safestrap or flash fire. These will allow you to flash some custom ROMs.

I don't think you can safe strap in lollipop. You need to be on 4.4.2, mk2 I think

you can kinda have safestrap on lollipop but it's kludgy. the safestrap splash screen shows up 5-6 times before the OS boots up
Try rooting with king root. There's instructions on how to remove it afterward, then try albe95's galaxy s6 rom on her. It's the only one I've been able to get connected to verizon's network. It runs way better than stock rom once you turn off the edge feature.
I'm rooted on 5.0.1 with Lollipop and my performance and battery are phenomenal. I changed CPU to 810MHz on all cores and changed governor to Interactive with a Deadline scheduler. It's smooth, hardly lags and the battery lasts 24 hours (original battery). I used KingRoot APK, and I have not had any issues at all. The only thing I really want that I can't have is xPosed.

I don't remember doing that, but it wouldn't hurt. Also, it seems not all OF1's are created equal. If you get Stang5litre booted, seems some can't, then you stand a pretty good chance. You probably know that anything can happen though.

I used Flashfire, yes. It worked for me. I think theres a thread out in the general section now. Nevermind old thread, different Bootloader, different framework.
Just use the Krait zip and Flashfire.

Yes. Only use version 0.24 http://flashfireapk.com/flashfire-0.24.apk
I just used the latest from the Playstore. If that makes a difference.
