[Q] SOS biggish Root / ODIN / Siyah problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Can a rooted phone be rerooted as in without unrooting? (i'll explain)
I rooted my boyfriend's phone over a year ago and therefore cannot remember what method I used. Per his request, I wanted to install a new rom however, I am getting a signature verification error. While looking for answers, most posts recommend disabling the signature BUT I do not have that option when i go into recovery. My only thought in fixing this is to place a root over the root lol
Any advice?

Sounds like you dont have a custom kernel and instead are trying to flash a rom via stock kernel.
Just reboot into download mode and flash Siyah kernel in ODIN. Once its installed you can reboot into custom recovery and flash new rom. I would advise to wipe data/factory reset in custom kernel before or after installing new rom.

Can you please point me in the right direction on how to do this? It is the first time I run into a problem such as this one in 4 phones i've had
Which one from this list?
Is booting into custom the same as the normal Recovery boot?

It depends on which firmware is now installed on his phone, which version of Siyah can be installed.
No, CWM Recovery isn't the same as stock Recovery. To flash a new rom you should have CWM Recovery, as you will have when you've flashed Siyah.
About the flashing itself: just search for rooting and flashing guides, here on xda or google. There are plenty of them.
Good luck.

I am now in ODIN 3 and have managed to boot into download mode. My question now is in ODIN where do I add the SiyahKernel S2-v4.1.5 (i went with the first version they have) where do I add it: bootloader, pda, phone or csc?
EDIT: PDA. <
Did exactly what Athiest suggested but now some purple yin yangish logo appears while turning on but nothing after, just a black screen

you have a bootloop.
go into cwm recovery clean cache and the advance clean dalvik cache and reboot, that might fix the problem.

[Q] rooted device can't install new ROM

Hello everybody,
First I'd like to thank to community for the hard work. I v read a countless amount of pages of this forum and I can't even imagine the time people spent helping on issues or writing tutorials.
So thank you if you re up to spend few minutes on my specific case (and sorry for the bad english).
Here is my device and the different version of kernel ...
1/ Rooting my device (tutorial in french translated from xda)
http://www.cnetfrance.fr/produits/guide-rooter-son-galaxy-s2-39763841.htm
S-Root version used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Everything went pretty well when I rooted the GS2. I got the Superuser app so i figure it's ok.
I just used a modified kernel found on xda who was corresponding the my base band version (just the PDA in Odin).
2/ Installing a new ROM (Cyanogenmod by Rom Manager)
I followed : http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/ and http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide (official guide) using Rom Manager premium.
When i tried to reboot in Recovery (manually or with Rom Manager), i can't find the "Install the zip" option, I have 4 available: "Update from the zip", the 2 wiping/delete options and the reboot.
So obviously if i try to wipe files, wipe the cache then to update with the zip I have the following Error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
Do you have any idea what went wrong in the process ?
Should i flash the phone withOdin and change my base band version to another one ?
For info, I did the Permission Fix option in Rom Manager too. Didnt help.
Thanks a lot.
U need clockworkmod instaled first..

You didn't install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for theses answers but I think I installed it with Rom Manager and i flashed it to the last version.
(joined file 1 : cwm rom manager.jpg)
When i reboot in recovery mode here is the only options available (and it's the problem i pointed out) :
(joined file 2 : 20111125_13221022.jpg)
Maybe a problem with my SD card ?

As we've already said, you haven't installed CWM Recovery. You see at the top of your second photo where it says "Android system recovery (3e)"? That's stock recovery.
you can't install CWM recovery thru ROM manager.
just flash the CF Root Kernel for KI4 thru ODIN , you will have CWM recovery.
Hmm I understand about the CWM version I'm booting with, but as you can see on the first capture, my kernel version is a modified one i got after using Odin (puting this Kernel : GT-I9100_XXKI4_insecure.tar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671).
I got the root access by S2 Root.
Ok I think I installed only the Kernel and not CF Root available here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I ll try to redo Odin and stuff and let you know if I'm still alive.
So it's not great right now. I have installed CF Root with Odin, so I had CWM on my phone (I could see the application). Then after reboot with CWM Recovery and installing Cyanogenmod, the phone doesnt want to start anymore.....
I tried to apply the insecure kernel again with Odin but still impossible to download. I'm stuck on the screen with the yellow sign and written Galaxy S2.
HALP !!
I just tried to put back the official firware version : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and put it in my phone with Odin.
Ok, I dont have the yellow sign anywore but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen (where it's written Samsung GALAXY s II)...
What should I try ?
I'm still able to boot with CWM recovery but I didn't make any backup and nothing work.
Do you think the phone is dead ?
5 posts in a row?
So, just to clarify, you've tried to install CM7, which amongst other things tells you to do a nandroid backup, and also to flash twice in succession. Did you do either of these things? The instructions are there to be followed, don't just ignore them.
Ok my bad I didn't backup anything because I had no data to backup. This was maybe a bad move...
Anyway, I tried to flash it twice yes. Right now, i'm working with a modified Kernel (with CF Root), and booting in CWM Recovery. When I want to flash again by installing from the .zip I get a Satus 7 Error.
In CWM, every advanced options are apparently available but I dont know anything about them.
And just so you know, on my SD Card i have 1 update.zip and the update-cm-7.1.0-Galaxys2.... .zip from Cyanogen.

Flash a stock rom with Odin and then root your phone again. Start reading and follow procedures when you want to flash custom roms again .See Intratechs`s thread for a stock rom
Thanks for your reply.
I did it, it didn't work, I mean i could flash with Odin but the reboot doesn't work : the start screen appeared without the yellow sign, but it's stuck on it.
--- update
FYI, I installed Rom Manager yesterday, it way interact in a bad way with CWM Recovery.
For now i can mount USB by CWM Recovery but cannot do anything else.
If you have a method to clean completely the phone ? Maybe the bootloader is broken...

Maybe I should re partition my SD card...

I re partitionned my SD Card with Odin and tried to install a new stock ROM. Everything pass with Odin but to finalize the set up (while reboot), I got some errors and still the same problem during the boot. It's stuck !
I installed a insecure Kernel so I can access CWM Recovery but still stuck and now I can't mount anything .

Samsung Android System Recovery <3e>

Hey everyone, ive searched all over and havent been able to find a solution.
I've followed the instructions on how to root using CF-ROOT (odin) and successfully rooted and booted into cwm and installed Resurection remix 1.0.. Everything works great, except when i try to reboot and go back into CWM i get android system recovery <3e> and not cwm.
The only way to recover is to install cwm or cfroot from odin again and reinstall the rom.
Any idea what i'm doing wrong? thanks
Don't know, try to change rom and see if it happens again... I'm on v3rtr3ma and is really good.. Tried also wanamlite 9.9..

That reads as the rom you are using has no built in CWM recovery .
Logic says ask the rom builder or in his post .

Like JJEgan says, the ROM then sound like it comes with its own kernel, that DOESN'T have CWM recovery, but standard Android recovery. ROMs come with their own kernels, so every time you flash kernel first, then ROM, you are replacing the CF-root kernel, thus losing CWM recovery.
Just re flash the CF-root kernel to get it back after you flash the ROM. There is no need to flash the ROM again after you flash the kernel.
Try installing Rom Manager and make a recovery once installed (top item in rom manager)

correct me if im wrong.
you're REINSTALLING the rom, after you flash CF-ROOT? if you reinstall the rom, then cwm will be deleted.
You can use this temporary signed CWM zip.In recovery, choose apply update from storage and flash the zip and you get CWM. When you reboot, it will be gone.
This was taken from Here
You better take a look here for further information.

If he's installing CF-root, CWM and ROM Manager tend not to play nice together.
Look in the Resurection Remix OP!
After you installed Resurection Remix let it boot and flash CWM-zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854. That should give you 2nd recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854
NOTE: İF YOU WANT FLASH SOMETHİNG FROM CWM RECOVERY FİRST YOU MUST İNSTALL CWM.ZİP FROM STOCK RECOVERY MOD(APPLY UPDATE FROM EXTERNAL STORAGE AND CHOOSE CWM.ZİP AND İNSTALL)
AND NOW TOUCH RECOVERY MODE WİLL APPEAR THAN YOU CAN FLASH ZİP FİLES

Kinda confused me the first time as well...
But the moment you flash CWM.ZIP, recovery mode is reloaded and you can flash anything...

LOL, indeed, reading the first post of the ROM thread is a good idea too.
OP, as gee2012 notes, there is a NOTE in the Resurrection Remix thread in all caps, right under the "Rom Installation (please don`t miss any step! )" section.
On an unrelated note: gee2012, you of Chinese descent?
EDIT: Whoops! didn't see jakezpeenz's post. Sorry, not meaning to repeat what a bunch of other people already said.
I can confirm
hi
I can confirm that after installing ICS remix you need to flash the cwm tar thru Odin after you install ICS to get CWM
I had to do it yesterday

I9100 freezes at samsung logo screen

First, I want to say sorry because this question has been asked many times. Though I have done searches on the Internet and came across some solutions, I still don't understand how to solve it.
Anyway, here's the story: my brother just bought a galaxy S2 (I9100) and decided to root it via ODIN. However, he mistakenly flashed his phone with a firmware for I9100G. He then tried to flash again with a custom kernel for I9100, but the phone always freezes at the startup screen (with that yellow triangle). So that's 2 custom kernel at the same time. Then I tried to flash the phone with a stock kernel. This time, there is no yellow triangle at the startup screen, but the phone still freezes there. I can still access to the Recovery and Download mode, but have no idea what to do next. Please help me. Thank you
If you can access Recovery, try to wipe data/cache and Dalvik cache. And try flashing a custom kernel after that with the compatible zip file through recovery. I recommend Siyah.
But don't do this with 4.0.4 stock recovery, cause then you will be bricked.
Cheers.

Wait, if I recall correctly, then the phone's version is 4.0.4 before the rooting attempt. So what you mean is that I shouldn't wipe cache with the version 4.0.4 or I shouldn't flash kernel with that version ? Because if it is the latter problem, I can go around and flash through download mode. Anyway, thanks for the advice

You've managed to flash the right official firmware with Odin? Just make sure you don't perform any wipe with stock kernel (in stock recovery) from 4.0.4, all other kernels will be safe.

Yes, I managed to flash the official kernel with ODIN after flashing the 2 custom kernels mentioned.
So, now if I want to wipe, I'll have to re-flash my S2 with a custom kernel right ? assume that works and everything is wiped, will the S2 be able to work again ? Or do I have to do something else ?
Did ur bro make a backup before flashing ?
I had a stuck on logo prob and the only way I could fix it was by loading my backup. wipes or flashing other kernels would not fix for me.
I have read others with similar or boot loop issues caused by kernel and fixed the same way.
if u don't have a backup I don't know, maybe research soft brick fixes. good luck.
peace
Just flash official firmware through Odin. No need to restore back ups or flashing other kernels.
Afterwards root it again and flash a custom rom.

If the cf root procedure was successful I wouldn't worry about installing a diff recovery just yet, lets get the phone booting 1st. Download a custom rom and get it moved onto your external sd card, Boot into recovery(from power off, press volume up, home button and power), make sure its custom and not default. Then install the custom rom zip and reboot it should hopefully fully reboot. then look into installing a newer custom recovery.

yes, saw it. its a custom rom. tried wipe data / cache but didn't work. will try to install custom rom sentinel now.
was able to install the custom rom but kept on rebooting after few minutes. it already happened thrice now.
anything i am missing?
It could be the insecure kernel you used earlier is making it unstable, probably if the custom rom doesn't install a kernel. Only thing I can think of is install an official Samsung g3 rom which should repair all the partitions that might of been damaged or corrupted, use it for a while to make sure no reboots. Then go through root and install of custom rom again. In theory creating a good foundation to install a custom rom on.
Just out of curiosity did u download an official Samsung rom before starting to flash in case u need to send it away or sell it on? If not what network/country are u using? Is the phone locked to the network or unlocked?
Edit:- I never used a kernel flash to root my phone just used cf root 6.4 to get root and custom recovery cwm. I only changed my recovery this weekend to Phil touch.

[Q] [HELP] How can i fix boot loop Problem after flashing a Custom Rom, I9300?

Hey Guys
I came from Stock Rom, rooted my device and flash recovery. And when i come to install any custom rom my device get into a boot loop.
Fortunately I got a back up and every time a try a different custom rom and i can go back to stock.
Well i have tried with the following roms
CM10
AOKP
Slim Roms
Paranoid
Everytime i have tried any of these roms i do carefully everty step. Just exactly like the tutorial says. I've been done this before, installing custom rom in other device, like nexus s, gs3, gs2. Im familiar with those stuffs.
And i don´t think it has to do with some corrupted file when i download the base.
I have tried to reflash recovery and nothing.
Tried to change kernel, i changed to siyah and nothing. After i install custom rom , the device just show the logo of the rom and ask select language and bam!, there is the boop loop
I don´t know what else to do.
I have read something about clear nand with odin , but i dont see those options.

That suggests a problem that is one of the following .
EXT SD card faulty
Custom rom download faulty
CWM recovery faulty.
user not following instructions .
Try flashing a Samsung Based custom rom .
jje
What do you mean boot loop is it actually restarting after boot and restating again ??
Yes. Exactly that's what i mean. It restart over and over again.
External sd card > i dont have one
Recovery > i tried with cwm and philz
Downloaded rom > i have tried download from the xda developer site and tried with different files, different roms
Im pretty sure i follow the instructions just the way it is

Hey jje, what is the purpose of flash a samsung based rom?
With this I understand that it will alow me to flash a custom rom after that, is that right?
Another question, how can i go back like all factory settings, i mean clear everything. I format internal sd, factory reset, do the wipes, fix permissions and once again try to install a custom rom but phone doesn't boot after show logo. Actually i install the same rom in another i9300 and everything's go fine, so the file is ok.

Samsung-based ROM is a custom ROM based on the stock one.
