Hi all,
I've had a Galaxy S3 LTE (GT-I9305) for a couple of months which I rooted at 4.1.1. This week I started to get problems with the phone not always charging properly and then I got problems with the micro USB not connecting to my PC. Now nothing works on the micro USB. It seems as though the USB connector is dead as I've tried known good chargers and cables,I even did a hard reset, removed the battery etc.. to no avail.I also checked the connector for signs of damage, cleaned it out and made sure the pins were alined correctly which they are.
It looks like I will have to send the phone back as I'm fairly sure the connector is broken.
The problem is that the software on the phone is rooted so how do I restore the original firmware back on if I can't use USB as I assume I've voided my warranty when I rooted it? The phone does have a full charge on it so I do have some life in it. I wondered if I could force a 4.1.1 firmware refresh via wifi or put something on the removal SD card and run it from there as CWM is installed.
Any help much appreciated.

Today i found out my SGS2 have problems charging the phone, not only that. i also have problems with USB file mode, and keis mode. and if the phone is turned off. i only once got it to charge without booting. else when i connect the USB it boot the OS.
What weird thing is, that ODIN works without problem every time!
The problem appeared after upgraded to Darky Rom KG6 with jkay mod. but don´t think it has anything to do with that.
I reflashed to a Stock KG6 (still same problem)
From OS restore to default, and format (still same problem)
tried to flash back to KE2 stock. an but on CWM, and clear battery stat, and system cache.
flashed backup with a KE2 Kernel (still had the same problem)
What i found out is that, when i disconnected the wall plug charger, the phone still was in a state of charging. and it don´t give the sound notify when attaching the USB. but when touch the USB cable it suddenly charge and give the sound. but it can also go in MTP mode. or start Voice recognize.
Could the be a faulty USB port on the phone, or can Battery State and kernel updates have something to do with this problem?
im now pretty sure this has something to do with the USB port. when i just spoke on the phone. it suddenly began to change between Car mode a normal.
i than tried an alternative why to deal with the problem. I tried with a hairdryer after taken out the battery, sim and sd card, and carefully heat the back of the phone.
for 5 hour there has not been any problem. both the desk dock, and wall charger is working.
got a dejavu from the xbox days and RROD.
I have the same issue. I think the USB port is faulty.
The phone reacts to different electrical resistor values on some pins of usb port that triggers car mode, desk mode, etc. So, somthing is faulty in the usb board that reports to the system that has something connected to it: charger, car dock, desk dock, usb jig, etc.
I can't find any solution on the forum, I tried with several roms and got nothing.
So... I'm waiting for a USB Jig to reset counter, back to stock rom and send it back to store for warranty
My problem seems to be fixed by using the hairdryer on the usb port. I think the problem appear from the why you hold the phone and if your hånd become sweaty. Because there are nothing to protection the usb port like the sgs1.

Did you really fixed just cleaning?
Yes it happening two times and it fixed it both times. So there is a pattern
hey guys... I posted something that worked for me...
see my post in the other thread here:

I hope this could work for you too
Hi everyone,
I had a Thunderbolt that wasn't connecting to my computer via the usb port. I was able to return it due to the 1 year manufacturer's warranty and got a new one. I got my new one and had it about a month now. It connected to my computer no problem when I first got it. I go to plug it into my computer today and now this one's not connecting either!
The only thing I can think of is maybe it's a shorted cable or a bad charger that's causing the the usb port to burn out. It still charges, but no data. I went through all the troubleshooting that I could, since I knew what to do from trying to fix my old one.
But does the phone know to turn off or down the charging if there's too much current or voltage from the charger?
i have similar problems. i am on my 3rd tblot. I just use airdroid or dropbox to transfer files.
Wowzers, so I'm guessing it's pretty easy for the usb port to break? I'm not worried about transferring files, I just want my phone to work as it should. Guess I'll call Verizon again...
Anybody else have this problem?
They're harder to break than the older mini usb, but they can still be broke. If you want to avoid it, look into inductive charging.
I think I'm in the same situation. I have tried 3 different PCs and 3 different cables and neither PC or cable even acknowledge that a connection was made. Still charges, though.
I've had it for about 9 months, do I just need to revert it to stock to get it replaced under warranty?
You're still covered under manufacturer's warranty for one year from date of purchase. You still need to call tech support and go through all the troubleshooting methods that they have though. Once you've tried everything and they conclude that the usb port is indeed broken, then you can make a claim. I'm still not sure if you have to revert back to stock to make a warranty claim, but I did so just to be certain. I would still re-root before you call tech support though.
Since it's a pain to revert back to stock without being able to connect to your computer, I bought an app called "HTC Thunderbolt Restore" from the market that re-rooted it and installed the stock rom for me with no hassles.
A month or two ago I started experiencing problems while connecting my S2 to the PC or laptop using the data cable.
When I connect the cable to my S2 on the PC or laptop it comes up with the balloon messages in the system tray:
USB device not recognised.
Then a short while later it comes up with another balloon message:
This device can perform faster.
Sometimes while transferring data, it will disconnect and the file transfer fails.
Sometimes if the cable is moved slightly it will cause the device to disconnect from the PC.
And, of course, the file transfers are much slower than they should be and much slower than they used to be.
GT-I9100 Rooted.

Gingerbread 2.3.6 Stock (Frankenstein)
I haven't touched any ROM or flashed anything on this in like over 8 months so it's nothing to do on that front.
I removed micro SD card and tried reconnecting again, still the same problem.
I've tried different computers, still the same problem.
I've used different cables, still the same problems. Tried enabling and disabling USB debugging. Same problem still remains.
The USB cables and computer and laptop work fine with my S3.
All the correct drivers are installed for the S2.
I'm resigned to thinking it's a hardware issue as I've exhausted other options. Is there a simple fix or will this need sending back to Samsung?
I've had the phone over a year now but someone told me the warranty is two years?
All help appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.
Why don't you upgrade to ICS?

Probably because his USB port doesn't currently work properly.
@OP, this is often caused by a dirty or faulty USB port. You can try cleaning it, but you may need to replace it.
Try cleaning it out with a dry toothbrush first.
If that doesn't work, take the battery out, and try cleaning the port with a small q-tip with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; let it dry for a while after that, then replace the battery.
If THAT doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace the part for the USB port.
If your warranty is still good, you could try to go that route, but you'll need to unroot your phone. Otherwise, I've heard it runs about $15 for the part, and you can replace it yourself. If you don't feel up to it, you can have a cell repair shop or Samsung service center do it for you, but it will probably be significantly more expensive than $15.
My opinion based on your description is the USB socket on the phone is wearing out/damaged. The USB socket is on a small circuit board separate from the main logic board. It's easy to replace and the part is cheap on EBay. Search for a disassembly/tear down video and judge whether you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the very quick responses guy. They were very thorough as well.
I will look into cleaning the port and if it still doesn't work I'll consider having it repaired. My soldering skills were excellent but I haven't done it for a few years, so may leave it in someone else's hands.
I haven't upgraded to ICS as I was very happy with my phone at the time. Also, a couple of friends who had upgraded to ICS on their S2 regretted it due to numerous problems, which put me off upgrading.
You can still use mobile odin and theres no soldering needed with the usb,it comes as a board with a ribbon cable.

I've had a look on the Samsung website here:
w ww.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It seems as though the warranty period on my phone is 24 months so I might just get it done via Samsung.
I'll contact them in the morning and see where I stand. If not, then the replacement USB board connected by a simple ribbon cable sounds like a doddle. I've seen a grade A condition part on ebay for about £8 delivered.
Thank you once again.

This is a Cable problem. The USB port of your device is wider now, that's why the cable doesn't fit well. Buy a micorUsb cable for blackberry, it's always very full and thick, then use it to connect your phone. The issue should be resolved.
I once had the same problem with my Nokia N8 and using a Samsung cable (which looks fuller and thicker) solved it.
Yeah warranty should be 2 years BUT youll have to unroot it first if your sending it to them.
They may also wipe your phone and stick on 4.0.4.
If you get the board yourself, check the number is going to be the same i.e the spare one I have here is GT-I9100 rev2.2.
Also other people have got a replacement board and the mic doesnt work(think the boards are sold as refurbished).
So its up to you which option you go for.

So i just woke up today morning to find that my s3 hadn't been charging and somehow went into dock mode using the standard in the box charger? i keep my phone on a bedside cabinet
connected to the computer nothing either... then got my mhl cable plugged in that worked normally no issues. so after that i've tried a different a cable that works but still sometimes it has issues charging or connecting via USB and some cables never work.
So i'm just wondering has my usb port somehow malfunctioned? and would it best to return to samsung for a warranty replacement?
I am currently running somtax v15 and i know i can use mobile odin so i could just use that to reflash to stock? but im just wondering if it has a old bootloader would my warranty still be valid or should i just reflash ICS before the bootloader got updated?
Like a week ago my S3 9300 was taking longer and longer to charge now it won't charge at all, now is always stuck at 0% if i turn it off it will charge but very very slowly, i don't know if it's the phone or the battery maybe someone here had the same problem and could help me out a little, btw i have it with CM 10.1 thank you
Alejo
Had the same exact problem with my i9300, got it out of warranty repairs yesterday. Was using a custom rom, but the same thing happened when I finally managed to flash it back to stock (had to manually press the microusb-cable as hard as I could into the phone all the time in order to get the phone recognized while Odin was working, was the longest flash ever lol..).
Remember reading about cold solder joints etc before sending it off, so if your phone is out of warranty for some reason you could replace the charging port yourself. Replacement part costs ~5$ (eBay) and if you got the skills it shouldn't be too hard to replace.
EDIT: Actually mine didn't even charge when power off, so I was pretty certain it was a bad solder joint or some other physical problem.. Have you tried cleaning the usb port with pressured air or just blowing into the port? Could be some pins of the usb port blocked with debris. Also check your usb cables, there are those with 5 pins and those with only 4. Saw the difference in charging speed while the thing was still working.

Well actually when i plug the phone into the PC it will recognize it and i can access the files in the SD card and Internal Memory and everything at the moment it's turned off and it's charging.
I have the problem that the phone only want to charge with soms chargers.
I can connect the phone to the original charger or to a pc or any device without problems, the phone will charge.
Even with an old blackberry charger (only 2 wires, no data) and car charger can i charge without any problem!
But when i connect the phone to the htc charger of my old phone, or to an iphone charger i see the phone is connected but it won't charge.
When i open batterymonitor i see that the charger is connected, but the phone still use his battery.
I tried this with all kinds of charders and all kinds of micro usb cables. Then i thaught there was maybe a resistor or chip or something build in some chargers, because i couls only charge with chargers with 2 wire cables.
Then i took a usb extension cable and i disconnected the two data wires so only the + and - 5V cables were left,
but still no success. If anybody knows where the problem is, please let my know
with kind regards! Martijn
