check the magic 8 ball.
Seriously???
that's really up to you - i went ahead and flashed the leaked official ATT ICS version and it's been working excellent. It does not have the Premium Suite but its got most everything else - and i also sideloaded the S-Note from the premium suite

IMO, just wait and stay on GB with root. One thing I miss is stability and more RAM.

flash unofficial best there is...hands down!
Have you ever rooted before? Installed an alternate recovery like CWM? Flashed a ROM? Created a nandroid backup? Cleared caches? Formatted system or data? Used ADB? Used Titanium backup? Run non-stock launchers? Modified system files such as build.prop?
If not, search for everything I just listed, and start reading. None of it is really hard to do, but having a basic understanding of each of those moving pieces is going to be key to running a stable custom ROM.
Most custom roms have install instructions in the OP. If the basic steps there confuse you, then please don't rush anything and START READING!
Good luck!

I agree. The Unofficial 2.0b4 is a very stable, capable, and low-maintenance ROM to install and get your feet wet...
I just switched to the unofficial this weekend and have enjoying it quite a bit.

you can only install roms that are built for your specific device. Trying to install roms meant for other phones will likely break (aka "brick" ) your phone. So no, you cannot install the Galaxy Nexus ROMs on your Note
Luckily, our Note currently has several ICS options to pick from.
First, read up on how to install and use Clockworkmod Recovery (aka "CWM" ). Once again, only install the version that is mean for our i717 AT&T Note.
Then, as I said before, I recommend "The Unofficial v2.0 Beta4" as a stable first ICS rom. Go to its thread and start studying...
I love:

You may have already seen this but if not, XDA member febcyv has managed to get google now working with ICS.

I have not tried this on my TF300 yet, but if anyone else has I would be eager to find out how you got on.
Good luck and enjoy
Just installed it, and everything wet smoothly. I have no idea what I am expecting now though, it appears to have just replaced the search bar. Nothing different seems to have happened so far.
Edit: I had to install the modified Velvet-theos0o.apk file in order to get it to work properly. Voice search isn't working but that seems to be a common issue.

if you search factual questions it should now bring up "knowledge cards" with your answer rather than a google search.
Also try holding home and dragging up, it may open "google now" which is supposed to act a bit like your PA and learn your routine
I'm also doing a bigger more widespread port of this over in the android development>apps and games section
We have both a flashable .zip and an .apk. It has a strong effort into getting voice to work. If you want check it out. Go ahead!

Is there any versions out for non-rooted devices? Don't feel too good rooting my new device, would lose the quarantee
Unlocking voids warranty, rooting doesn't.
It says that it requires a "A Rooted device running ICS AOSP Rom". I'm rooted but NOT unlocked and therefore NOT running a custom ROM.
This won't work for me. Right?

Im not 100% sure, but I would imagine that the stock ROM is close enough to AOSP for it to work.
I think it probably would work, but you may want to wait for someone else to confirm

I'm the head of one of the Google Now for ICS projects and you can probably install this normally. Just make sure not to delete your original "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" file. Just rename it and have it on hand to put back if anything goes wrong.

Ok I am almost at the point of trying a Rom. My questions are..
1) being htvdev unlocked ota upgraded are there roms I cannot install? If so how can I tell.
2)again with the ota restriction can I use goo manager to install or do I need to use fastboot flash boot to do it.
3)looking for advice on a good Rom to install. Not sure about going senseless not that I am against it just I realize it is more than just the pretty face. Although the only widget I use is fancy widgets do not think that requires sence but I could be wrong. I would like the rom with the best multitask capabilities. Super user of course and buttons renapped for sure. The fastest most stable Rom woukd be best.
4) I have reset google wallet so will I be safe from bricking my chip?
Thanks for any and all help

Hi guys, I am very new to the Note 2. I just unlocked and rooted the latest ota using Casual. Thanks to Adam Outler and everyone else involved. So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

Thanks for the info. Exactly the answers and info I was looking for. I just flashed CleanROM and went through the flashing process. When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

Thats not a normal thing to happen, but it does happen occasionally. As long as it boots up after the battery pull I wouldnt be too worried by it. I have had it happen to me before and after the battery pull I experienced no issues whatsoever.

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

You'll probably never be able to install a custom rom.
Best you'll be able to get is modded TouchWiz, e.g. Hyperdrive: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301724
Check your build version in Settings -> About Phone.
If the last 3 characters are M** (e.g. MK2), you can root/flash TouchWiz roms. If it's NC5, you can't do anything, not even root.
Alright. Hopefully it's still on android 4.2.2

The Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 was a new experience for me when it comes to modding the ROM. It turns out that the revision of the phone makes a large difference. It is very important that you read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501 thread started by decaturbob. Instructions that work for some versions of the S4 will brick others, so read that thread first. Then you will have a better understanding of your limits.
I picked up mine a few months back, so I have one of the most locked down versions. I can say that I've installed Hyperdrive, and I'm very happy with it. I do miss the CM ROM I had with my old phone (Razr), but that's not gonna happen soon, if at all, with this one.
Good luck!

If you got an mdk(4.2.2)on the way, count your blessings and whatever you do don't take any ota updates... Its hard to get one of these baby's anymore...luckily I read heavily about the s4 when I was looking to buy and knew before I even had it in hand not to update it...good luck and happy modding
If possible, Go back to Verizon and return s4!! Get LG G2 or HTC One M7 instead!!!

We all root and use modded roms for various reasons. Some want to explore the newer ideas and try the latest cool roms at will. Others, including myself, want a good, stable rom with lots of custom options. After a few weeks of tweaking it, I just go back to using the phone. Both are fine approaches, it depends on what you want. The first option, with easily swapped roms, is not going to happen with the S4. The second, works just fine with the Hyperdrive mod. I agree that the S4 is a great phone, I did root it, I like Hyperdrive, and I use the WiFi tether routinely.
The advice is this: If you want to choose from a variety of roms, especially if you want an AOSP rom, you'll be needing to have an older S4 or another phone altogether. If you're content with the one or two custom rom mods available for the newer S4, such as Hyperdrive, you'll be fine.
