[Q] debloat without unlocking? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys, just popping in here to figure something out for a friend, I'm not too intimate with VZWs locked bootloaders on samsungs (I enjoy easy samsungs on sprint)
She's wants to root (which apparently can be done without unlocking the bootloader, easy enough) for the sole purpose of deleting some bloat, and absolutely not flash any ROMs. Does this device require being unlocked for it to boot after removing stuff from /system?
I can't find the answer explicitly, just the same rhetoric "you need to unlock in order to flash Roms kernels or recoveries",none of which apply here.
Thanks in advance!

For a starter, I recommend that you don't UNINSTALL any system apps (once removed it's tough to put it back). If rooted, just install Titanium backup and freeze the bloated apps or if not rooted, go into settings ->apps and disabled the app. Let it runs for a few weeks to make sure everything is working and you can easily roll back by "un freeze" or 're enable". This is about the same effect as debloating without saving the space.

You don't need to unlock the BL to delete bloatware. All you need is root. You can install No Bloat from the Play Store (Requires root) to delete the bloatware.

Ok thanks!
I'm intimate with Android, I definitely feel comfortable removing apps with root explorer. I just need to make sure she knows how to use ODIN in case she touches something she's not supposed to lol.

Ok I recently got a tf201. I have finally decided 2 go for it and trying 2 get a custom rom.
Untill now (using a SGS) I needed 2 root the phone then get a custom kernel then apply the rom.
How is the procedure for a prime? I tried 2 root but shortly found out that i had the .21 update, Im guesing I can downgrade not sure.
does "unlock" = root?
can some1 clarify the process tree to get to a new rom?
http://transformerprimeroot.com/tra...ow-to-unlock-bootloader-on-transformer-prime/ <--- how hard is it 2 succeed this without bricking it?

You will have to unlock via the asus unlock tool (you can just google that and get it directly off of the Asus website). Then you will have to use Fastboot to flash CWM onto your device. From there the usual, back up the stock rom, and install any custom rom of your liking.

unlock tool from asus website. ok but can u explain 1 thing 2 me? if its on asus website why does it void your warranty? and root and unlock are different?
If you are planning to flash a custom rom, check out androwookie v1.2 its good.
Unlock gives you the ability to install a custom recovery e.g. cwm, you then use this to flash a pre-rooted rom. Root just means having access to the root directory. It enables access to features and functions that are normally made inaccessible.
Using the fastboot method is pretty simple and guides can be found easily. I just did it yesterday after having previously only rooted and installed cm 7+9 on my sgs2.
Thats my understanding anyway

It's just one of their stipulations. Most manufacturers are like that in regards to using their unlock tools.
Root = enhanced permissions to run apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer (if you're modifying anything in the/System directory), stuff like that.
Unlock = your bootloader is "unlocked," you can now put ClockworkMod recovery on your device, flash ROMs and kernels. These things can't be done while only being rooted.
I hope I cleared it up for you a bit

so with unlocking the device I wont have root privs? so things like you said titanium backup wont work?
1 more thing. is unlocking considered harder? and does any1 have a video of unlocking so that I know what I can expect b4 freaking out?

Unlocking doesn't instantly get you root, it just makes rooting a lot easier to do. Like they said, unlock, put CWM on it, flash a rooted ROM and bam, rooted. But correct, apps like Titanium won't work if you're only unlocked, you would need root.
As far as I know, unlocking just requires downloading the .apk from Asus' site, installing it and going through the prompts. It doesn't sound hard at all. I personally don't know the ins and outs of it, as I never unlocked my Prime, but that's all it really sounded like. Sounds pretty simple. I believe there's some videos on it on YouTube though.

No problem! And yep, the link in the first post is a great looking guide for unlocking. Nice and easy, step by step. And after you have unlocked, just download ROM Manager from the market and you can flash CWM through the app itself. From my understanding that's the easiest way to do it, at least. Sorry it's been a few days since I responded, I haven't really been checking out the Q&A section lately

Bootloader unlock:
Custom Kernel possible
Official updates impossible
Waranty impacted
CWM backups possible
Need to use community ROMs in future
improved but not great chance of recovering from bad ROM flash (really needs NVFLASH)
Rooted:
Now possible with firmwares up to .28
Permits write access to /system partition
Makes it easier to brick and block OTA updates
Should be reversable
Allows most tweaks to be applied except for replacing kernel (which is a prerequisite for some kernels)
Going to make this a FAQ I think...

unsure 2.3.4 user - root or upgrade questions

I have a 2.3.4 (45.3.6.MB855.Sprint.en.US) Photon 4g. After reading a bunch of threads, I still want to ask some questions to make sure I'm understanding this all correctly, so I can best decide what I want to do.
I had been putting off rooting, but now I've got this annoying nag screen about upgrading to 2.3.5, and it seems the only way to get rid of the nag screen is to be rooted, right? [EDIT: it's a good month later now. i've actually forgotten what I did to get rid of the nag screen, but it involved finding a file on the part of the system files that gets revealed when you root the phone, and then changing some value in a file from 1 to 0 or vice-versa.]
If I only want to root to have access to the full internal file structure of my phone, I don't need to rom flash, right?[EDIT: right]
Once rooted, I can unroot and upgrade at a later time if some future version comes out that I do want to update to, right? Do I even need to unroot to upgrade if I'm comfortable with never rooting* again and I haven't rom flashed but only rooted? For example, would a 2.3.5 upgrade hurt a rooted 2.3.4 phone or just unroot it?
Rooting will delete everything** and cause me to have to reinstall every app, right? [EDIT: no, it doesn't; bootloader unlocking could though.] If that's true, can I make a backup first that would make reloading apps easy?
What about eFuse? No one's mentioning it as a problem though this older article says it should be.
Type "bad-news-root-crew-the-droid-3-has-a-locked-bootloader" into Google, b/c I can't post hyperlinks as a new user.[EDIT: I dont' know about efuse, but having rooted now, I never ran into a problem caused by it.]
*Actually, the below copy-pasted reply from another thread makes it sound like even after upgrading to 2.3.5, the device can still be rooted, presumably using the photon torpedo method.
"My opinion is do not do the update right now .. It will lock your bootloader.. yes you can root your phone again but thats basically it.. You wont be able the flash any unlocked custom roms"
**This youtube video seems to suggest so: "deleting all yo ****" Go to youtube for qbking77's "How to root the Motorola Photon 4G and get Free Wifi Wireless Hotspot"
If you update to 2.35 you should be able to root. Rooting should not wipe your device. You won't be able to unlock your bootloader. So don't do it. If you must update to 2.35, root first and see if you can find a version of it on these forums with a bootloader that won't permanently lock yours. I think I read a post somewhere about that. Google is your friend.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Really depends on how you intend to use the phone. If you ever want to flash custom kernels as of right now you need to unlock the bootloader. With the update to 2.3.5. right now you cannot unlock your bootloader. The update to 2.3.5. brings really negligible upgrades to the phone and in my opinion the update is really only meant to lock the phone down further.
Rooting does not delete any system files(apps and such) the AIO root seen in the video by QBKing77 prints out deleting all yo ****, shabbypenguin intended this as a joke I think. You can unroot by flashing one of the sbf images floating around.
Hope this helps some.
Thanks for the input JohnH4 and mof9336. My paranoia about the phone getting wiped comes from...
"Warning: Unlocking your phone’s bootloader voids its warranty. It also completely wipes (formats) your Android phone’s internal memory including applications, contacts, SMS and MMS messages etc."
from googling "what-is-bootloader-and-how-to-unlock-bootloader-on-android-phones-complete-guide"
...though I guess "unlocking your phone's bootloader" is not the same thing as rooting.
Exactly. They're two seperate critters.

AT&T Tether, Unlock, and Root, Backup Apps and Config?

Okay, brand new to Android. Just spent all weekend loading apps, configuring WidgetLocker and Nova Launcher, lots of learning, lots of work. Thought this would have been easier than jailbreak on iPhone - just as time consuming (initial setup I guess is always this way)
Today my Internet connection went down and I realized couldn't tether my phone unless I paid AT&T a tethering fee. I was considering eventually installing a custom ROM (CleanRom?) but frankly even though I'm a tweaker, I'm pretty burned out and Sense+WidgetLocker+Nova Launcher is doing the job for me. But lack of free tethering is a deal breaker.
So I'm guessing I need to unlock and root my phone. Is there a reliable way to do this yet for AT&T HOX+? I assume/hope it doesn't require me to reinstall the apps?
If I'm not going to install a custom ROM should I still create some sort of stock recovery file? Isn't the whole process unlock > root > create recovery > install custom ROM?
I want free tethering but I don't want any headaches either.

Lol, i'm in the same boat as you bro coming from an iPhone 4. Hope soon it can be available for us ATT USA users to root and unlock our phones and when it is possible there is a step by step Noob guide for us. I've seen a Noob Proof titled thread for this but even reading that i'm still lost!!!! LOL Wish it could be made as simple as jailbreaking, download the jailbreak app, simple click of the mouse, DONE. Not so much with Android :crying:
Well it looks like this "Noob Proof" All-In-One Toolkit combined with something called TWRP for *AT&T* HOX+ that just came out should work. But frankly seeing all these posts about bricking phones and apps disappearing, I'm a little leery to be a Guinea Pig at this point.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994961&highlight=at&t
Any veterans here can confirm that this should be "SAFE" ? I don't want to have to do any "repairing" or reinstalling/reconfig of apps. I'll be prepared to do that if I want a new ROM. I do think I will probably eventually cave when there is a CleanRom for JB 4.2 for this phone as I think I will eventually want it to be closer to a Nexus - with both WidgetLocker and Nexus Running, I have sort of defeated most of the purpose of Sense right?
So far there's only one custom ROM, *just released* and it is JB 4.1.1. I personally won't go to the trouble until there is a JB 4.2 ROM. It was released a week or so ago to AOSP so I imagine it can't be too long?

I can confirm this. I used the instructions on htcdev.com to unlock it and the all-in-one tool kit to root it. Just be sure to select the ATT image when rooting. Then you go into the data files you get with the program and copy the SuperSU.zip onto the phone, boot into recovery (hold volume down when starting the phone) and flash it. Then you have full control over your phone.

Forgive the noob question, but when you say flash it, are you flash it, you're not flashing a custom ROM (there's only one available) right? Aside from the free tether and being able to remove bloatware, I see there are also certain apps that require root, is there any specific change you can make that is really beneficial after rooting?
Doing this doesn't make me lose all my apps and settings does it?

Aside from some more flexibility in being able to run apps that require root, and removing some built-in unwanted software, are there any oter specific significant benefits such as battery life performance, or fixing certain bugs, improving certain performance/functions?
Can you recommend which program I should use to make an apk backup. And I assume you lose all settings (unless backed up within application and moved off phone the moved back) and you have to reload all your media files, custom ringtones, etc. correct?

The All-In-One worked great for me on ATT.
Download the HTC software kit from the HTC website. Then just plug in your phone to sync.
After you root, just resync. You will have to redo all your tweaks and the like, but your media is preserved and it does not take long. The Play Store will have a list of all the apps you have both free and paid, just re-download everything.
HTC sense is supposed to back all your settings up, but I have never been able to make it work properly, and I've never been motivated to figure out why.
It's only a hassle the first time...
Once you have everything back the way you like it, buy Titanium Backup Pro, and do a full system back up.
Next time you flash a ROM, you should be able to do a full restore that will put everything back the way you like it, provided that the ROM is compatible with everything.
There are no custom ROM's for ATT yet, so just follow the instructions in the Q&A to turn on tethering for free.

[Q] How to remove bloatware from stock

I'm about to get the DNA and was doing a lot of reading on S-Off/On, unlock, root and pretty much, I think, know what I need to do. But, not to f-up, would like some validation and corrections from you guys.
So, once I get the phone the very fist thing I will do is unlock as it will cause everything to be deleted, so no point in setting anything up. Correct?
Once unlocked, I can setup and use phone and root later, but I want to remove all the VZ crap, so, I'll probably root right away as well.
From here, how do I remove the bloatware as I want to stay stock and don't want install any 3-rd party kernels that allow system read-write while booted yet. I'm guessing that there are probably "unbloat" zip files that can be flashed via recovery, is that correct?
I haven't research custom recoveries yet, so wont ask but any volunteered information is welcome (which one, any issues to be aware of)
Thanks for your help.

You can't change any system permissions without being rooted. You will be stuck with anything that resides in system/app. There are some other methods that run an exploit without a permanent root for different phones, but HTC is very strict with what they allow. Alternatively, if you do plan to root and flash then you could use my simple guide for everything else: click here
You will have a lot more fun and better results with performance and battery if you do root and flash. With the simplicity we have now for unlocking this device you would be stupid not to go further
That was my sentiment exactly - root is required to do any modifications/bloatware removal. I might have not been clear when stated that after unlocking the bootloader I can use the phone and root later. I understand that until rooted no changes can be made to system.
Nice Full Gide you have written there, btw, uppon2.
If you delete bloatware while the phone is booted in android the changes won't stick unless you have a writeable kernel. You can use a script that will wipe the bloat in adb instead of flashing a writeable kernel.

[Q] How to root without loosing data?

This is the first time for me with an HTC device. So I need a little help.

My phone is HTC One X+ running Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5.
In case I need to take claim the warranty of the phone what I would have to do? Is there something I should do before rooting the device, so that I will be able to unroot it?

I don't know all the answers to your questions but let me help you make something clear.
Unlocking the bootloader is different from "rooting"
Your warranty is voided when you unlock the bootloader, which is an important step to actually "root". Your bootloader is what you see when you reboot and hold volume down. The step of unlocking the bootloader is the step that cause you to lose your data. So I recommend you to connect your phone and copy all the valuable information and files on it to your PC, then once this step is done you can copy it back.
Rooting: Becoming the administrator of your phone (like sudo in linux) , Becoming a SUPERUSER , meaning you can change system files and so forth and so on (Thats the general explanation however since we all have S-ON so its called temporary root but lets not get ourselves to that yet)
How can you gain root access?
1-Unlock the bootloader
2-Install a custom recovery
3-flash "superuser.zip"(which will be included in almost all the guides that you will follow to root your phone)
Once you have root access you will be able to play with your phone settings , but be careful not to break the settings.
Now concerning your final question , how to "unroot"?
Before you flash "superuser.zip (which will be the real "rooting" of your phone) , you will go to your "custom recovery" (most popular onces are TWRP and CWM) and go to an option called "Backup" and you do a backup called "nandroid backup" , which copies your phone AS IT IS , which then you can copy it to your PC. You will be able to restore it using the recovery you had installed as it is. Which technically will "unroot" your phone.
Question you might ask: That is so cool, but can't I do it before unlocking the bootloader and losing all my data? from my EXPERIENCE and what I searched , No.
Then how will I benefit? Since having root access to your phone might put your phone in danger of breaking something , or installing a bad ROM (read about this topic before rooting. Here is a summary: "HTC Sense" is a ROM. "Samsung TouchWIZ" is a ROM, "Stock Android" is a ROM) you will have a full safe backup that you will be able to restore so you can have your phone running again.
Also note the following: Once you have a custom recovery you will be able to install custom roms , when you install custom roms your APPs are deleted BUT the data IN your SDcard directory will not be harmed (Music, pics..etc)
So how can I recover my applications? By installing "titanium backup" you will be able to backup all your applications apk and data, saved to your internal storage, so when you switch roms , you need to redownload the app and then restore your data, and you will have all your data back.
So why can't I use that before I unlock the bootloader? Because Titanium backup ITSELF requires root access to access your apps apks and do full backups.
Also a note, when flashing your FIRST ROM, you will sweat like a pig when you get stuck on "Boot screen" , its called a "BOOT LOOP" , do not fear. Since HTC has all the bootloaders S-ON (till now) you will need when you switch ROMS to flash the boot.img to your phone. HOW?
Google "Fastboot flash boot boot.img HTC" and you will see tons of guides. It should also be noted in every single custom ROM guide that you will need to follow that STEP.
ALSO!!! Do NOT FORGET TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE ROOTING AND BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FLASH A CUSTOM ROM!! AND DONT INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM FOR "AT&T" AND YOUR PHONE IS INTERNATIONAL AND VICE VERSA.
I rooted my phone and I wish I had someone to tell me that in a single post , so I spent around 10 minutes writing this guide , which I hope people will find useful.
Best of luck mate
Also note that this is the wrong section, since its a question it should go to "Q&A section".

Thanks a lot for explaining all these stuffs to me. Really appreciate it. I knew a few of the things already from what you wrote, but I must say a lot of these are completely new info for me!
So tl;dr I can't root without unlocking the bootloader!
Thats so sad. I wanted to save all the games and stuffs' data so that I won't have to redownload all the games. (

I know its sort of tiring but honestly the payoff is massive, atleast to me. I explored things I didn't know about my phone. I learned information about how the phone is made. These information help you.
Inaddition to having custom ROMs, rooting offers you the benefit of backing up your games which is not available on stock.
Anyway, Best of luck, android is a great world to explore.
I however must give credit to every single one that helped me on that topic, and that's my way of paying them back. To Help others like me who need help

If you root now, you'll be able to use titanium backup and backup all the data you want! Then you can transfer these game and app datas across any android device in the future!
