i was with a friend today at a coffee shop. He had a nexus 4 (stock) and i had my s3 with cm10.1. i have 200 apps installed on my phone at the moment, and i also run swipepad, a LWP and Fps meter. we had a speed test between both phones, out come? my s3 with CM10.1 (stock kernel just updated) raped the nexus 4!
here are the tests we did:
apps:
phone dialer
play store
email camera
messaging
facebook
twitter
chrome
dead trigger
youtube
currents
appy geek
whatsapp
kik
earth
clock
gallery
other tests
Boot time
3G speed
here is the out come:
apps:
phone dialer: Nexus 4
play store: nexus 4
email: s3
camera: s3
messaging:s3
facebook: nexus 4
twitter: s3
chrome: nexus 4
dead trigger: s3
youtube: nexus 4
currents: s3
appy geek: s3
whatsapp: s3
kik: s3
earth: s3
clock: s3
gallery: nexus 4
other tests
Boot time: nexus 4
3G speed: neuxs 4
as you see the results are all over the place. but the s3 won 11 to 8 WITHOUT ANY EXYNOS SOURCES. granted it would be great to have them cos the while the s3 beat the crap out of the nexus 4, the nexus 4 had MUCH smoother animations. the s3 had really jerky ones.
the cm team have done a AMAZING JOB! a truly amazing one without sources! i can't imagine how amazing cm10.1 would be with the sources
**don't go hating on me**
Yeah, imagine sources & documentation...

Don't get me wrong, I think cm is much better than stock Samsung roms.
I use a dual boot setup with cm and stock based rom.
Everything you wrote may be right but still there are some very basic reasons for me not to make a complete switch and leave stock behind:
1. Camera quality is still noticeably better on stock roms
2. Bluetooth is working much better on stock roms
3. Battery life is better on stock roms

yes, true. but again each rom, Sammy or AOSP has their own advantages! i still need to wait to dualboot cm10.1 and NULL_14 i need to update my sig.
I really want to go to a cm rom and stick to it forever but due to the lack of documentation i have to switch back everytime i set it up and get comfy with it.. Like the other day i wanted to take a quick video of my friends birthday party. But as soon as i pulled out my phone the camera crashed.. It's these little things that make me change back to stock..
If samsung did put out the proper documentation for Exynos or Exynos themself then imagine how awesome cm would be.. Till then i just can't make a permanent switch.. But i really do love the asop rom.. Oh well till they do release the sources i will keep using my nexsus 4 or my nexsus 7 tab..

yeah, i found that too. the Camera on ALL cm roms SUCK! but then again, stock is slower...... so since i don't use my cam often i am on cm10.1. if i did, i would be on the best rom for camera quality
Agreed..
The awkward moment when you open the camera app and it says "Camera cannot connect" then the shot is ruined.. Ahh fooze balls.

I apologize in advance for being a noob and asking a very very silly question. I'm new to the Android platform and want to learn.
Here we go. I'm impressed by the UI of Stock Android that can be seen on Nexus devices (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, they look and work so cool). No lagging, no fancy TouchWiz or anything. But Samsung Galaxy S2 has this touchwiz thingy. I recently got to know that the UI that I love (stock Android) is a part of CM10 (I mean, CM10 looks very much like it, and has added functionality compared to stock Android), and it can be installed on the Galaxy S2. Now there are a few things:
If I get an S2 and install CM10 on it,
- Will it be free of major bugs (there are a few bugs in every OS). But will it perform like the OS on those Nexus devices?
- Would it be a better decision, compared to getting a Nexus device (I don't want the Nexus 4 for some reason, and Galaxy Nexus, well, has slightly low-end hardware).
- Also, I was preferring a Nexus device only for the stock Android look and experience, but if I can get that on a rather flagship phone, why go for a Nexus?
I'll ask more questions once you fine folks post some replies. Please help me out... Thanks, help will be appreciated in non-Androidish terms (though I'm technically sound in all aspects, but i'm a noob when it comes to Android).
Thanks in advance
if you want bug free stock android buy a nexus *period*
gs 2 will have issues with future android updates sadly we havnt got butter on cm10 even after about 6 months of development

Thanks! What about other Custom ROMs? Are there any ones out there (apart from CM10) which look, feel, and work like Stock Android?
(not worth asking, but preferably with less bugs?)

Bro in all honesty, CM10 is actually pretty good for this device and you probably wont really notice much of the bugs (ok there are some annoying niggly issues with the audio but definitely not a deal breaker or anything major, you might not even notice it) and it is a good alternative to AOSP (nexus roms). Yes project butter does not work but the ROM is still damn fast considering that its not implemented "yet".
Another good Nexus type ROM is AOKP, for me this is the better ROM because it has some damn fine swagger, and you will see what I mean if you install it. It is based of CM10 sources so very similar but still unique. Personally bro I would only stick with these two as they are very good quality ROM's, unfortunately as mentioned before, we are stuck with incomplete sources due to Samsung withholding them so we wont have fully stable ROM's until this is released.
My sincere advice is to buy galaxy nexus or nexus 4 if you can. Else I advice you to use CM9 till the time Samsung releases essential sources to make CM10 work better. CM9 will give you much better battery life than CM10. As it is the battery life of S2 is not that great.

Thanks for all the replies guys, really appreciated. Actually I'm getting a Galaxy Nexus and a Galaxy S2 at the same price (almost $345). Since S2 is much better (in terms of hardware) as far as I know, it has less issues, better battery life and so forth. All it lacks is the OS that I want in Galaxy nexus, and since you're telling me that AOKP is just as good as stock Android, I can put AOKP (or even CM9 or Cm10) on it and use it. I just want a Galaxy Nexus for the OS, not for the hardware. As a matter of fact, the hardware of Galaxy Nexus is quite disappointing, so that's why I'm preferring the S2. The only reason I'm asking the questions is: whather I can flash a nexus-like ROM on to it and have a nexus-like OS experience. Is that possible? And is it worth doing?

AOSP (in this case CM10) is already good enough to use, and you won't find major bugs as mentioned before (IF you can find them as you don't sound like a really heavy user but I could be wrong). So why waste money on a device if the S2 has better hardware?
AOKP is a modified version based on AOSP, but indeed has a lot more options.

I was thinking about picking up a used one of these for my mother for her birthday. I am torn between this and a Nexus 7, but I think she may like the larger size.
She already had a Galaxy S3 and a Kindle Touch. She mainly would just use it for Facebook, email, and some little BS games.
I this tablet still got enough power and support to last her a year or two? Also, would the stock rom with root be fine? She actually likes the touchwiz on the S3 so I would just keep that on the tablet as long as it's smooth enough.
I could get a used Tab for 150-200 or just pick up a brand new Nexus 7 for 200. What do you guys think?
Thank You

If she's okay with the 7 inch size, I would suggest the Nexus 7. I gave my mom my original Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 inch, with CM 10 rom and she loves it. She much prefers the 7 inch size to a 10 inch tablet, but that's just my mom.
The Tab 10.1 is a great device, and is definitely worth it for 150 bucks. The stock rom is fine, but I would go ahead and load CM 10 or 10.1 on there just because it will be a smoother and better experience.
All in all, if she is particular about a 10 inch tablet, the Tab 10.1 is a good buy. But if she is okay with a 7 inch tablet, I would go with the nexus 7.
Thanks for the reply. Today I ended up asking her if she liked my Tab 7.7 or my wife's Tab 8.9. She seemed to like the 8.9 better because it was something she would just use at home. I was going to offer her my 7.7 and then just pick up a Note 8.0 for myself, but I think she likes the bigger screens.
So that being the case. Does the 10.1 run with any serious lag? I keep reading reviews about how slow it can be. She won't be taxing it with too much stuff, but she doesn't like any lag either.

If you're keeping it completely stock, there may be a very slight lag just because of older hardware, but nothing terrible. If you do want to keep it stock, I would suggest using Nova Launcher, because it runs a lot smoother with transitions, swiping the homescreen, animations, etc. There's a free and a paid version of it.
If you want to flash a custom ROM on it, you may not get serious lag, but there will be glitches here and there like I mentioned before. For example, there is a slight flicker that happens on the screen every now and then, doesn't really bother me but it may bother some people. But the upside is that you gain a lot of features with CM 10.1 that you don't have with the stock touchwiz android 4.0 that comes with the Tab.
If you are wanting long term support I suggest the nexus 7 but as it is for your mom and see isn't going to be doing much according to your posts then get a tab 10.1 and put a custom rom on it.

I ended up getting her a Tab 10.1 for $150 with a flip case. It is coming pre loaded with CM 10 I think. It is the 4.2 version I believe. I told the guy to just leave that on. I may try the stock rom with the Nova launcher though to start her off. Not sure if there are any touchwiz like roms made, so I guess it will just revert to stock GB and let it upgrade to ICS. All in all, I think she is going to be just fine with the stock version for what she does on it.

It actually depends on what player you're referring to. If you're referring to the 4.2, CM7 does not have a working camera and there are no devs to try and fix that. Obviosly, CM7 is not a daily driver for us. But, the other players like the 4.0 and 5.0 have gradually improved from a non-functioning camera to almost completely stable camera on CM11. Basically, it depends on the developer. If the dev is really keen on making a ROM a daily driver, he/she will definately work on the camera. But if he just wants to make a ROM bootable, only the major problems like wi-fi, bluetooth etc. will be fixed as camera has a low priority in the mind of a dev.
Wow makes sense. I always wondered why it wasn't working with cm7. I hope cm 11 on the 3.6 has a working camera.

I don't think that will be necessary. I am sure most of the people who have a galaxy player have another android phone, or atleast a good camera that they carry around. No one depends on their player's camera to get their job done. So I think that the dev should focus on fixing other bugs and/or porting Android L when it comes out, or port other ROMs like Carbon and PAC. Personally, I use my player only for music and videos and the occasional browsing, but extremely rarely to take pics, because no one cares about a 2MP pic.
Lol this is very true. I use my phone to take pictures. Rarely used my players. I guess you are right. A usable camera isn't necessary. As long as the WiFi and audio works than I'm satisfied. Question about holofrenzy. Is there an new update? The ota updater says there is but it's version 1.3 as well.

Hi there,
i am about to buy a new phone sooner or later.
My old SGS III (I9300) is still running quite fine (thx to the dev´s in here), but after 2,5 years i looks kinda awfull by now because of the bad build quality (cheap plastic crap) of the body.
So the next should have better build quality = metal frame if pos.
So i figured out 2-3 possible phones:
Samsung Galaxy Alpha or Samsung Galaxy A5 (wont be released in the US/Canada as far as i know)
As an alternative:
Phicomm Passion
The most important point for me is the longtime community support from CM,Omni, etc. This tbh is the only reason i still use and can use my quite old S3. And i can´t even tell you how much i hate Touchwiz and crap UI´s like this.
Might it be easier to get a good working CM for the A5 because it will have a Snapdragon 400 or 410. I often read about Samsungs Exynos making it hard to develop for.
So do you got any thoughts what device will have the better community support? Yeah crappy question i know, just wanna hear your thoughts
greetings from germany

Yeah i know the the Alpha has a stronger SoC, and is intended to be a flagship device. But tbh as long as the system runs smooth i dont give a damn at antutu scores and dont even play any games.
But i think the best precondition for a good longtime support from the community is a high popularity and alot of sold devices. Atleast i think thats the reason the SGS3 for example, is still up to date.
I dont really care about the support from the producers like Samsung, HTC, LG etc. They all do quite a bad job at holding their devices up to date. (Sony might be a exception) The community does this job alot better in my eyes.
As far as i can see it the Galaxy Alpha didnt sell this great and the active dev´s and roms are quite rare (sadly).

I run a CM developer build and my battery lasts for 2-4 days. I never had a device with such good battery life. The exynos chipset is great, cause the modem is separated from the main system. They don't share any memory. So the modem can't access the android filesystem.
same hire,2-4 days moderate use
our phone is optimised as iphones
normaly coz we dont have every week to flash custom roms hehehe
rorian & leripe are quite right,
if you check Alpha's sub forum u will notice that is already half dead
that's sad cause Alpha is a truly strong device, will an excellent design.
It has its flaws -as all devices have-, but that's expected.
The phone went live on the market with a high price, because was directly compared with S5,
so customers expected the price to be lower than s5.
The competition was already high in this range with cheaper models.
Then finally sammie put the tombstone on the device by announcing the end of production.
The device is good , im happy to own it, and i would buy it again for sure, but it hurts when im
clicking in xda and see no interesting from the community, i blame 101% samsung for this, EPIC marketing/scheduling fail.
Sorry if my englisch isn't that good.

That is funny I gave up my nexus 5 for the Alpha and I cannot be any happier, and Im a developer developing games for android and they run very nicely on my alpha also looking forward to the Lollipop update.
Here's Antutu Benchmark for Galaxy A5
I've just come from iPhone 6 then note 4 and then decided I wanted a smaller device but android so I purchased the alpha after looking into buying the a5 the alpha is a better device by far. I'm very happy with this only wish it was abut heavier and so slot that is all but for now I'm enjoying this little beast

despite the alpha is still considered a medium-range phone, i want that people who have it to be proud!
why?
because the performance of this phone is a BEAST !!!
just look at the images uploaded from my device, and this is made with stock rom from samsung, no root and no tricks!
Just imagine what this can do over a rooted and/or custom rom !
All of you with a galaxy alpha should try and test a little your beast.
I also challenge you to beat my score, but the condition is to have the original rom, no root or other tricks!
In the last 6 months I had a nexus 5 (2013), HTC One M8 (2014) and now the Alpha Exynos. To be honest, other that the benchmark score, I feel that the Alpha is way more slow than the other two. Using it means constant waiting for something to load. I also feel that the TW is the bottleneck and I really don't understand why it has to take such a long time to load multitasking and/or google search (not to mention the constant stutters and hiccups). I have the latest software - unlocked version - and not rooted.
In terms of daily use is close to HTC One M7 which is a 2013 phone (witch I had before nexus 5).
I'm hoping that 5.0.1 and ART to change this. If not, I'm selling it.
Cheers.
try this:
1- go to developer options and disable all 3 animation settings that are set to 1x by default!
2- install a thirdparty launcher, i recommend nova launcher ...and
3- you dont have to sell it if you achieve request no. 1 and 2, maby you will enjoy it, it is really a premium phone, nice looking and impressing performance as you see my main thread.
i have the exynos also and belive me is way more performant then qualcomm version, try it both before buying!
best regards

Try to use some of the tricks, especially uncheck my magazine because he is slowing down ui.
Also I am using Total Launcher...for me, best launcher by far
Putting your phone in the fridge will improve your score too.

i just upgraded myself (note 4) and the missus (alpha) and have got to say the alpha is a great phone. if i didn't need the larger screen and spen i would of also had one. missus is on 2 days 9hours of battery, 1hr 30mins screen with 29% left which has impressed me.
note 4 (qualcomm) for comaparison
