Hi,
I'm starting this thread because I can't seem to find anyone on here/the whole internet that seems to have had a similar problem.
I've got a UK unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 GT I9300 in pebble blue 16GB. I bought it pretty much when it came out and was pretty happy with it. I updated it to JellyBean 4.1.1 via KIES last year when it came out (October/November?) and again was pretty happy with it.
Unfortunately despite being super OCD over my devices I managed to crack the screen. I sent it off to a Samsung repair centre and they changed the screen out for a hefty price. Phone came back and it hadn't been wiped or factory reset etc.
Then in December last year, I think it was the 12th, I got the Sudden Death. Phone was close to full charge in pocket for a few hours, took it out to make a call, wouldn't turn on. So I took it into the shop and they sent it away to be fixed. Got it back about 10 days later, working, factory reset to 4.1.1.
So when I got it back I noticed that 4.1.2 I9300XXELL4 firmware was out. I downloaded that and Odin and flashed the BTU firmware for unbranded UK devices. All seemed to go totally fine, phone has been working ok since.
Once small problem I have had since as long as I can remember is that in about phone, under status, the device status changes from normal to modified all the time. It turns out this has something to do with my 64GB EXFAT micro SD Card though. I found a few people with similar problems and thought nothing more of it.
Now however, I've noticed the 4.1.2 firmware with the exynos abuse fix and MAYBE sudden death fix was out, so I'm pretty interested in flashing it. Anyway I came to flash it and thought I'd check to make my custom binary count etc was as it should be. Turns out its not! I've got custom binary download YES (2 counts). Current Binary SAMSUNG OFFICIAL and System Status OFFICIAL. So I'm just a bit perplexed as to how this has happened? Can this happen without rooting and just flashing stock firmware? Or has it been modified/rooted when its been aware for repair to Samsung? I'm just a little bit perplexed/annoyed that I've made sure I've always kept it stock so that its protected by the warranty etc as I've been an early adopter and have to keep it for 2 years. Yet here I am without any of the benefits of rooting yet I've technically voided my warranty and haven't actually done anything?
So just hoping for some thoughts on what could have caused this? Also, is my only option to remove this to ironically root, triangle away, stock flash/factory reset/unroot? I would like to flash this new I9300XXELLA firmware if its got potential fixes but I don't want to add to that binary counter if flashing through Odin unrooted is going to do this. Obviously KIES won't do it anymore as it thinks it's modified.
Hope you guys can help, any thoughts are appreciated!
Many thanks in advance.
UPDATE - Have just flashed using Odin the I9300XXELLA firmware found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 Phones working fine and it hasn't added to the custom binary download counter. Still shows: YES (2 Counts)
ELLA is really smoother than rest of firmwares. If i was you i would.
1. Root with Cf root
2. Run triangleaway
3. Go into download mode and check if its official binary stock sammy 0 counts.
4. Remove battery.
5. Download odin 1.85
6. Downlload xxella
7. Flash xxella as PDA.
8 .wipe data in stock recovery

Could you link me to them? I really couldn't find them for the i9300 that's never been rooted.
Endrit9, thanks I think that's my best bet. I've flashed ELLA already, can I still root with CFroot?

Yes it should work then run triangleaway check download mode. Flash lla wipe data good luck but if u bought the phone and live in europe theres nothing to worry about.

The 4.1.2 firmware you flashed via Odin is not officially signed by samsung( this is what i read I'm not 100% sure) This causes your counter to increase.

Thanks I'll check out the root threads and give it a go. I live in UK, I bought the phone on a contract here but it's unbranded, I just got an O2 sim with it. Will this still be valid for warranty?
Thanks unitnerd. I didn't realise it might not be signed. Although thinking about it now I imagine it's probably because they're compiled by someone else after it comes out of KIES.

we can always flash back the stock rom and reset the counter with usb jig, we should be ok.
But then again now there's people saying there's a hidden counter to count the number of resets to the counter on the phone lol
reset counter?
Hi,
I just came back from Serendipity 6.4 to stock 2.1 on my captivate using ODIN 1 click. Because of the GPS issues on my phone the warranty dept were ready to replace my device). I am going to return it tomorrow.
I have done a factory reset and deleted all the unwanted folders. I am not sure as what you meant by "Counter". Could you please let me know if I need to take care of something else before i return the phone.
i dont want to get into any trouble while returning the device or after returning the device.
Thanks.

On the SGS2 there is a counter that increments each time you flash a custom kernal/rom and the SGS2 is also rumoured to have a counter-has-been-reset counter, just to complicate everything
It is unknown at this stage if it exists, and if so, if it can be reset.

don't forget the hidden-reset-counter counter
it's probably just a rumour that don't exist. <- implying Samsung doesent need 1000 counters to check if the phone has been flashed

Thats probably true why have two counters .
Odin does not affect warranty its of itself a tool .
Flashing a custom rom will rooting will .
Flashing a stock rom could lead to rejection by a vendor if you bought from Vodafone and do not have the Voda firmware they could reject warranty but in that case the Samsung warranty would still be in place .

I have helped a friend root his device and then unroot it and get it replaced at the att device center. He did not face any issues while getting his phone replaced. That's because it's a captivate and not a SGS2....
Tough to say based on the counter and the hidden counter counter rumours. I'd be inclined to say Samsung should be alright with it based on them sending certain ROM developers the phone.
Hey,
As far as my reading experience goes in the forum. I guess the counter does'nt click for the non-rooted firmwares i.e. released by samsung. It only clicks if we root the phone. Basically updating KIES stock releases like (XWKF3, XXKG5, XXKH3->the latest) don't void warranty. Then again I might be wrong because diff people have diff opinions on this. Anyone care to clarify ......
Cheers,
The only reason to send the phone back would be hardware malfunction, as this phone pretty much cannot be bricked. So I don't see why the warranty wouldn't work, considering custom ROMs are not going to be the reason for faulty hardware. That said, before sending back the phone, I would still flash the default ROM and reset the flash counter with a USB jig, just to be safe.
Yeah i guess you are right. Since the phone is unbrickable most of the software problems can be solved by flashing the rom by oneself. For hardware issues we can we can always switch to the region specific stock rom. But then again my question comes to jigging the phone do we really need to do this if we are not rooting or not flashing a custom rom. I mean we only update the stock kies releases only using odin ? Does the counter still tick ?

I'm sending my SGS2 Skyrocket in because it's got a stipid blotchy screen and I asked them flat out if me having a rooted/custom ROM on the phone would cause them to not cover the crappy screen and they said the screen would be covered however if for some reason they couldn't flash/return the phone to stock they *might* charge me for software issues and that would be about $65 and they would call me first, the screen however would be covered reguardless. My counter is at 1 fyi.

ODIN voiding the warranty
I flashed the official updated ROM by ODIN to my Samsung E5 & it never VOID my warranty. Not even reset the country. OFFICIAL status maintained as previous. ODIN does not cause any problem. Thanks.
Got the Galaxy S3 on the 3 network in the UK, all was fine & dandy then found out about how the phone was updated & basically 3 sit twiddling their thumbs on it. Went looking for a solution, found a nice simple flash the phone with Odin, use proper Samsung firmware, thought that will do the trick for me.
Unfortunately I did exactly as I was told (didn't go down the root, well, route as there were too many options and I was lost as to wether I was using the right stuff) People swore by the flash to samsung firmware, did that last night, was perfect. Only thing left was the change csc thing, to select BTU but the option wasnt there...was told to download another firmware.......the phone returned with a "unfortunately, the process android.acore has stopped" message, was told to to a reset.......then got "unfortunately, messaging has stopped". Have flashed a few times now to no avail, I can no longer text, is my phone basically broken beyond repair?
Not ruined, but it sounds like you have clobbered some system files. Read up on rooting. Hopefully you can Root and then install a custom recovery like CWM then install a custom ROM.
It would have been better to have made a backup via recovery before you started flashing stuff.
Flash stock ROM and start again

But its a bad flash probably could be a corrupt download or wrong firmware .

Bull****...his problems have nothing to do with a brick. Don't scare him.
i'd defo try a factory, cache and dalvik reset first before flashing again, you'l loose all your data but it may fix the problems you are experiencing.. Boot into recovery mode to do that.
Thanks for all the replies. I have flashed with Odin 3.04 & have found out 3.07 is out...could this be where it all went wrong? I tried following the rooting stuff but found so many variations & in my head (technology challenged when it comes to this) it was all going over my head. I did do the factory reset & reflash with a stock software (the latest I believe) but I don't know if it is a network thing which knackerec me, in CSC I have sales code saying H3G with no options to select BTU. If I post a screenshot of my settings (about device) would that help someone steer me in the right direction as a possible starting point.
My phone appears to be no longer 3 branded, but it should be locked to the 3 network in the uk.
I had the same issue with my Three branded phone. What i did was flash the rom with the PDA button ticked in Odin and then flashed it again with the same file but ticked the CSC icon instead of the PDA and it worked and then let me select BTU from the menu. Give it a try and report back, i'm 99% sure it'll work.
BTW you'll lose the HD voice by flashing it. I still havent found and easy way to get it back working.

The link for the stock you posted is what I used....didn't root as I said, but appeared to work perfectly. Then I lost access to kies & was told I needed to use csc to tick the BTU option & that would work, except I didnt & still don't have that option. Was given another link to apparently the same stock that had "multi csc options" & that when I got the Samsung acore error & I did a factory reset after about 30 minutes of trying to get into the options, then the messaging stopped working & I found out how to do te factory reset using te vol button home power thing. Is there a specific 3 firmware where I can get my phone branded again & take it from there?

I am happy flashing on release, please understand this is all new. If losing kies is not an issue coz I can just flash then cool. I thought kies was an essential part of the updating. I can use my phone fine just now (using go SMS Pro) but would like it back to fully working phone which would be sweet.
Nothing good is wrong with your phone. It's not even a brick yet. Flash a cwm recovery and then re trying using check rom.

I'm on 3 UK same happened to me when I unbranded. Don't panic your phone is fine. Turn off phone then hold power + home + volume up. Let go when you see the Android man. Wipe factory reset and dalvik cache you will lose everything. Then reboot. Don't bother letting it boot back up, just hold power + home + volume down. Then flash unbranded rom via odin. Once done and booted type *#272*yourimei# and you should now have option of btu.

Hello everyone,
Hoping you can help me before my mrs cuts my nuts off. She asked me to update her GS2 (GT-I9100 on 02) and completly wipe the phone as she has had random apps appear etc etc.
I said that wouldnt be a problem as ive done alot on my GS3, though i am still pretty new to the Android scene (Previously iPhone).
So she was on Stock 4.0.4 XXLQ6 firmware.
I followed the guide to root from here as i was aware of the hardbrick bug in this firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
After that it was time for the Wipe data etc and flash the new rom. I chose JELLYBAM as its Android 4.2 with a mix of other things. Sounded perfect.
I followed all the steps EXACTLY from the Devs page:
http://www.igio90.net/how-to-install/
All seemed to be going well at first, got to select afew options etc. Then it said it was Extracting the package...This is were the problems started.
It was stuck at 2% for AGES, then out of the blue the screen just went BLACK/BLANK......Hmmmm i thought!
I have since been trying to source info from everywere about how to turn the phone back on but having no luck at all. I have tried all the Soft/Hard boot methods, ive left it on charge (Yes it gets hot near the camera) and tried all boot methods whilst plugged into laptop with ODIN loaded up.
Nothing seems to be working.
Any help what so ever will be much appreciated. This device was never previously rooted. Im gutted a it was all going so well...I shoulda guessed something would go wrong.

Was thinking about taking it in to O2 2mora and seeing what they can do. Damn.
If your still under warranty you should get a new motherboard. They won't be able to tell you've rooted it since it seems hard bricked.
Next time, get a custom kernel on it a.s.a.p and backup efs and make a nand backup before you start flashing roms.
Either that or stay away from 4.0.4 stock.

Just took it to a repair store and he said its knackered, but to be honest he wasnt much help...more interested in the texts he was getting on his phone!.....Typically a GS2...Im still pondering if he was taking the micky :silly:
if your s2 is still under warranty, just take it to the reapir service and tell them that the phone was on charge all night and didn't wake up in the morning
they won't be able to know what you did to it since it's completely unaccessible. If you successfully convince them, they'll change the motherboard !
PS : That isn't my idea but from what I saw in the hardbrick warning thread, most of the concerned people did the same trick ...

When you say "can't really do anything" that doesnt tell us what you have tried and not tried!
1) Can you enter recovery mode?

3) Have you tried a USB Jig?
4) Have you removed battery for 30 mins?
5) What happens when you power on phone?

EDIT: As user Pilaf suggested (thanking him a lot!) I installed a new siyha kernel then did a full wipe / factory reset, seems everything is backing up from google account and phone is working..
So you're telling me that the official 4.0.4 has a hardbrick bug? Well that's great.
Should I just wait for the official 4.1 or can I flash for example the Siyah kernel and then start flashing other ROMs?

Come on man, he's serious, so let's answer seriously
@krnrdstrm : to avoid the hardbrick, just flash a safe kernel (siyah, speedmod, dorimanx, philz ...) and enjoy ...
PS : didn't you have internet in jail ? :silly:
emmc bug

hello , i have sgs3.
few weaks ago it stoped working,
it shut down and when i tried to turn it on it was stuck on the SAMSUNG logo.
and its not charging the battery.
couldnt get into recovery mode, and when i got into download mode it shows
i had an original 4.04 samung israel rom, and never tried to change it or customizig it.
when i tried to get service from samsung israel , they saw the download mode and said that i tried to custom my rom and wrecked the phone.
and i DID'NT.
im trying to find out why do they think that, why is that line
"system status - custom" showed up?
i didnt try to custom.. can it be becouse of a physically problem in the phone?
please help me.
thank u, Amir
Your phone goes into download mode, try to flash a stock rom for your region.

i didnt root
had OTA a week before it happened.
and now i cant flash a new rom , they say the motherboard is damaged
Thread moved to proper forum.
can that OTA change that line to "custom"?
Not really ota updates are official firmware so it should leave that as Samsung official the only way you'll get that to be custom is by rooting and flashing custom firmware.

Their have been some posts where users say OTA has changed it to custom .
I would argue this point with Samsung .
Or try flash stock firmware reboot and factory reset and see if it clears custom .

I doubt it; a stock (company based) build of Android has no customization in it, and the OTA updates install via recovery, therefore they "sneak past" the download mode. I mean (Please correct me, if I'm wrong, I've never [ever] done an OTA update on a Samsung Android device, so there's my XP gone.) but if you install software via CWM, it normally won't show up, in download mode, because they are two different parts of the system, and it basically thinks, that only original software gets installed via recovery (because obviously, not everyone on the world, knows what is possible with any computer.
So much from me
Hope I could help!

Try (Obv try this at your own risk, tho Odin is relatively safe)
Odin to flash a stock rom,
wipe everything (data,cache,dalvik).
Flash Siyah kernel,
use triangle away,
flash stock rom (to get rid of Siyah).
This should reset the counter to 0 and set everything to "Official".
I say to flash Siyah first because TA doesn't work all the time on the official kernels.
Next time, leave OTAs alone, just flash it in Odin when a new FW pops up on Sammobile
there is no option to flash a new rom .
few days ago i went to a lab and they said i need to change the motherboard..
it is too expensive so i didnt do it.
today i went to a different lab, they said (as i suspected from the beginning) that the flash memory is not working
and thats why in the 1st line there is no device name (should be i9300 )
and this is why the word custom is written in the last line..
my problem was that samsung israel declined my warrenty becouse they thought i flashed a rom , but i didnt.
so hopefully i can prove them that i didnt do it.
i'll see what happen tommorow when i get back my phone from the lab
Hi friends,
I have samsung galaxy s3 and it bricked all by itself. I tried searching and found its a widespread issue (eMMC Sudden death). I think i have what is referred to as Half SDS, as i am able to get into ODIN mode. However i have tried flashing using ODIN 3.07 and it fails.
I tried re-partition using PIT file and ODIN simply gets stuck indefinitely trying to get PIT File for mapping.
I tried NAND erase and after some time it says failed
I tried Flashing with stock rom it says no PIT information.
So basically i have a dead phone with ODIN mode and it is recognized by windows in ODIN mode thats all . Any ideas how to restore it without motherboard replace?
How old is the phone? Is it still on warranty? Out of curiosity did you have a ROM or kernel with the SDS fix?

Phone details
My phone battery says its made in 2012-06-17, I made a jelly bean update thru wifi around 2 months back. it was working fine till yesterday when i woke up i got the samsung logo and it never went past that.
I dont have warranty as its an unlocked phone for Orange and i bought it from ebay in UK (August 1st week 2012)
I am not sure if it has a kernal with SDS fix, I updated it to jelly bean so it must be having it right? It said it had the most updated software so am guessing SDS fix was included or am i wrong?
Nothing you can do, new motherboard required.
Aaah That hurts :'(
Thanks mate.... Any idea how much it will cost?
Am beginning to hate samsung, i paid so much to get a faulty hardware like this :crying:
