Hello friends, I am newbie to rooting...
I am from India .. I have SGS2. Recently I upgraded official firmware from GB to ICS 4.0.3 through kies. I want to root it.
I saw the tutorials given in this forum. I seems to be really easy. I followed all, but cant get rooted.
Kernal Version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913 [email protected]#3
I downloaded Odin3-v1.83 and CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.tar and followed the steps.
After rebooting, I got two icons CWM and superuser.. If I open superuser, it says "No apps in list"
I installed Root checker it also says "Sorry! THis device does not have proper root access"
I don't understand where I went wrong?.. Do I need to do something else to get properly rooted?.
I have NOVA3 game installed and I reached to the end of "Hell Gate" I want to take game backup through Titanium backup..
Please help me..
Thanks
~prashanth
you could try downloading siyah kernal 4.1.5 from gokhanmoral and flash that either in cwm or via odin, i reccommend this also before flash delete supersu and reinstall when you flash kernal also reccommend a odin upgrade i like v1.85 it has a easy ui.
siyah kernals are prerooted too and also come with updated recovery boot also you wont get yellow triangle causing a binary count.
before i forget then reinstall supersu open it to update binary script n all should be hunkydory.
also to backup data download rootexplorer and find out where the gamesave data is usually android/data i think and manually copy if you need to. but i doubt it.
and happy flashing custom roms.

Thanks Paulius and linuxnubee for your suggestion.
I got one more doubt now.. If I hard reset after rooting, can I get original firmware back? and do I need to root again?.
You mean go back to GingerBread?
You will have to download a stock GingerBread ROM and flash it. And no, once you flash it you will not be rooted, as stock as it gets.
A hard reset will erase all data in your device.
Thanks for reply..
Not to Gingerbread, Back to ICS 4.0.3 stock firmware.. Since I rooted stock firmware, if I just hard reset now, can I get stock firmware (without yellow triangle) ? or do I need to download stock firmware and flash again so that I can use kies for upgrading firmware in future?.

U can try a simple dirty trick to make cfroot works with any rom(or maybe just gingerbread) without loosing wifi capability. Rename ar6000.ko file in /system/wifi as ar6000.ko.bak using any filemanager that have root capability(obviously u need to be rooted before attempted this). Then get ur hands on ar6000.ko file from kpn and put it in the same folder as previous renamed ar6000.ko file, give it proper permission and flash cfroot b80. This trick works with zckpa china fw, so in theory it should work on other rom too. Btw dont shoot me if this doesnt work, im just helping

I kept my self really busy, let me tell ya what I did so far:
1- Flashed the new FW with Odin, things are smooth there nothing major.
2- Installed CWM 4.0.0.9, smooth and easy.
3- Installed CF-Room 3.7 b78 and then b80, had weird stuff going back there but it eventually worked, I lost the boot audio on the Samsung logo.
4- Installed EXT4 converter, no problem.
5- Started converting from RFS to EXT4. first time it finished converting but refused to boot correctly, I re-did all the above and started to convert again, now it refused to convert the /system, saying I don't have enough space for the restore, it kept failing here until I freed some space by using Titanium Backup and removed crapware, tried again and now I have EXT4 instead of RFS.
6- Enabled Apps2SD using the Tweak Manager DT: Auto Start.
7- Flashed the Apps2SD GUI, the phone rebooted a couple of times but it didn't install, couldn't see the icon of it.
And now, I must have some sleep! Good night ya all
i have gingerbread 2.3.4 on my ace so can i apply this rom
i get 1250 in quadrant without any mods . just after i flashed . amazing Rom .

CF-Root b80 already have this solution.
To install CF-Root to Gingerbread ROM: flash CF-Root recovery b79 using Samsung default recovery. Reboot into CWM recovery, flash CF-Root boot b80.
Indonesia offical Gingerbread update: DXKP9
If ketut is happy, then we all should be happy too, when do you think you can start working on it?
I so far had around 3 or 4 SOD's, not sure they're caused by the ROM it self or the stuff mentioned before that I installed on it, the ROM also randomly reboot it self while working, it crashed and rebooted while I was in the middle of a phone call :/, this only happened after installing the C-fr 7.3 b80.

If I were you, I'd use Kies to do the upgrade, you have the official ROM installed, why not use the official tool too?
If you don't care about the official tool then simply map each file type to the right section in Odin, you can still perform the upgrade without having the modem file.

hello, i recently bought a SGS2 and i was just wondering, if i use kies to update the current XXKF2 kernel to the new KG5 one (also jumps from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 right?) will this process factory reset my phone? will i get to keep my current layout of apps and cellular operator settings or is it all gone?
oh, i forgot, is there an insecure KG5 kernel yet to root with?
Hi! I really dont know if it will reset the phone but if its just the kernel it should no change it. I would recommend you to do a nandroid backup (google) with clockwork. There should be an insecure kernel, after the backup update it. Then root it go into clockwork - advanced restore and restore ONLY DATA. This should work.
Note: if you need the insecure kernel please tell me the build version i'll provide a link.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Kies does not update a kernel its a full firmware update .
Kies updates do not normally wipe the phone but you should have a backup .
jje
Scratch that, kies is being stupid and wont connect to the server so i cant update this way anymore, but i guess i can still use odin, im just not sure what kernels to use for the update and what kernels to use for the root, there are so many threads about this, im just getting more and more confused lol.
im currently running:
baseband:XXKF2
Kernel:XXKF2
Build:XXKF2
i'd like to update to the latest root-able firmware,
so if you can provide me with the link need i will appreciate it,
from what i gathered i need to flash the updated stock files, then flash the insecure files, the reflash the updated stock to remove the yellow warning sign, i think.
thanks.

And yes, you're right. Backup, stock firmware flash, restore data, root kernel flash and stock kernel flash.
If you are doing this with odin your data will be wiped so a backup is needed.

hello. i have a problem regarding my galaxy i9300. before this, i already rooted my device but i unroot it again and install stock rom because
i think it is more stable. but now, i want to play heavy game and need to use chainfire3D and i want to root again.
my problem is, i follow all the step to root using cf-root and odin. the odin said it pass. but when my device reboot, i cant find
superuser and there is no CWM. then i try to check my device at about phone, it said already MODIFIED. but when i tried to instal any app that
need root, it cant be open because it says it is not root yet.
help.. i just dont know how to fix this. if i want to flash stock rom, the binary counter must be 0, and need to instal triangleaway but also need root access.
sorry for my bad english.
Same problem
I have also found that I have the same problem. Following a successful root and install of CWM prior to installing the OTA XXDLI8 jelly bean firmware I can now no longer root or install CWM, despite odin reporting a 'pass'. I have tried several versions of CF-Root-SG3 - versions 6.0 and 6.4 without success. I cannot find any other reports of this problem. What am I missing? The phone otherwise works perfectly.

Hi
I guess you have to do it manually. All you have to do is to follow these steps here: http://mobilecon.info/install-clockworkmod-recovery-and-root-samsung-galaxy-s3.html
and you should have CWM working on your recovery
I hope this helps! cheers!
i already do this but still nothing change. but actualy this problem already solved. this problem occur maybe because i update the stock rom .maybe they put something inside the update file so that we cant flash a cf-root file.
i just flash the stock rom back although the binary counter is not 0. then a lot of thing will be unstable (maybe because of the update). then after flash stock rom via odin, i flash the cf-root. then i got all the SU and CWM. now i can flash all the custom rom.
by the way, thanks..

I am about to install the international S2 JB ROM, and want root. The solution I have seen so far is the Siyah Kernel (6.0b4/5).
My question is this: If that kernal installs root, will I lose root if I change back to the official kernel that is inside the Firmware download (zImage)? What I might need is the CF-Root kernel, but I can't find it for JB (yet). Is it just a case of waiting for this?
I'm not familiar with ADB but am willing to teach myself, if this would help once I change to the siyah kernel (have looked at the quick root guides here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) but all the downloads are flagged by both Chrome and Avira if I do decide to continue past the chrome warning)

after installing siyah kernel v6.0b4/5 by flashing the tar file of the same thro ODIN ur phone will be rooted with the latest CWM recovery installed.
if u flash back the original kernel (zimage) again thro ODIN u will not loose ur root but it will be limited in its functionality

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I see now, the recovery seems to be part of/linked to the kernel. But I should still have superuser for use of titanium backup?
The only question I asked is: Do I keep root/busybox/cwm recovery
Lol of course you'll lose root and cwm, common sense. You will be flashing a new ROM package, new everything.
The only way to keep root (doesnt actually keeps, roots while flashing) is mobile odin.
I've found the answer, I do keep root, you were wrong.

Hi
I reccently bought i9300 ( hongkong ) and it came with 4.3, i tried rooting it with CF-Root, The process itself completes with no problem but when i open SuperSu, It asks to update binaries but when i do it fails.
All of the fellow xda helpers have suggested to install CWM and than flash Update SuperSU ***.zip from chainfire, I did that as well ( i flashed the latest zip) But the problem is there.
Can anybody help me with that?
The CF-ROOT and flashable supersu i have flashed are:
UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.91
UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.86
UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.10
CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300
CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4
Now as i am not rooted so i can't backup the EFS (i don't want to take the risk of loosing my IMEI) and flash stock 4.1.2.

Here are the details of my phone:
Model no: i9300
Android version: 4.3
Baseband: I9300XXUGNA8
Kernel: 3.0.31-i902166 [email protected]#1
Build no: JSS15J.I9300ZSUBNB1

i already did a backup through cwm, Is it good enough ? as i have read in the forum that if you dont have efs backup and you flash stock through odin, you may end up with lost imei; That's the boat i don't wana be on ... so i await your response on that.
Also can you guide me or give me a link to PIT and Repartition stuff, as i am new to samsung, i moved from htc.
After flashing stock, philz, do i need to flash cf-root through odin or update-supersu will do the rooting trick?
Thanks for your response

You should only use pit files as a last resort! Use only if your phone is not booting or major problems like that and definitely not because you can't root!
If you flash latest PhilZ there is a option in the settings to fix supersu try that way first or try a different version of su from playstore.

using odin i have installed latest PhilZ recovery, although the superSu is having the similar problem but i was able to find " backup efs" underr custom backup, i think internally my phone is already rooted, as custom recovery went on smooth. Will that efs recovery be enough to bring my phone IMEI back? Can you suggest what else should i backup ?

If done properly then yes also I would also suggest making another backup with PhilZ recovery there is a option in settings to do that ( you can never have too many backups) also if you want you can do a full nandroid backup which will restore your phone to how it was before you flashed anything.(but remember nandroid won't backup efs you have to do that separately)
For any fellow xdaz who are seeking help in the same case as mine, Let me update on what i did and what went wrong (although i am still not upto the rooting part)
so as i was on 4.3 ( I9300XXUGNA8)- The rom won't let me root, whatever i did, and i am talking about clearing cache, dalvik, cf-root, superSU update, clearing all superSU app and reinstalling via market and odin.
Than i thought i would ditch the rom and maybe downgrade ( for me that was the wrong idea )
along the way ( as suggested by " tallman43 " i did install PHILZ and did custom backup of efs and i made around 4-5 backups, Big thanks for the awesome suggestion ....i suggest you do the same, as trust me i later found out that 1-2 backups have corrupted files ( i don't know why).
i also downloaded neat rom and in that Aroma installer (rom installer) there was an option for efs backup as well, so i did that and installed that rom. Rom installed without any problem, root was also working fine, i personally love the rom but i have to give my phone to someone and i was hoping for total stock whereas in neat rom there are tags here and there, i would love to have em but as i said earlier...
i downloaded Stock 4.1.2 (I9300OZSEMK2) -- flashed it, flashed went fine but now i got 0000 as my imei, i tried restoring through philz but nothing happened
i restored previously made backup of my old 4.3 but now the imei was displaying " NULL "
finally i stopped there and searched the forums and read through many similar problems, i downloaded 4.3 (I9300XXUGNA8) from sam mobile , flashed it and voila the imei and network is back.
I am not sure what fixed the imei and why was it giving problems on 4.1.2 but i am happy with the results.
I will update for the rooting part and that would be my next step.

I came across this thread as I am facing the same problem with rooting.
I was on a rooted i9300 and did an upgrade to 4.3 via Kies.
Now when I run through the rooting process using CF method, Odin posted success.
I see inside the console (while flashing cf auto root) that SU binaries are being installed and all. But once the phone reboots, root checker reports phone is not rooted.
I tried a couple of other ways and the closest I got was to see TWRP recovery console once, but once the phone reboots, and I try to go back into recovery - it is still Samsung's recovery console.
Actually all I want is to flash a custom ROM because the phone has been running ridiculously slow. Can I flash it through Odin (under AP) or I have to use a custom recovery like clockwork or TWRP.

If you want only to flash a custom rom then you do not need to root custom roms come already rooted (alot of people make this mistake )..Just flash a custom recovery with Odin then follow the procedure in the stickies to flash a custom rom.
