Have there been any cases of water damage with the Razr?
Sent from my XT910 using xda app-developers app
Mine was dropped in the bathtub. It was completely submerged for about 10sec. I turned it off to be safe and removed both the sum and memory cards. Then I used a hair dryer on low heat to try and push some of the water out. After about 30 minutes from the incident I turned it back in and have been using it ever since with no problems at all.

From what I've seen it's pretty good. There's this video on youtube where a guy drops his in a bowl of water and gets pretty psyched. No case or anything. And I guess they put some protective coating over all the internal parts to make it less prone to water damage.
I had mine completely submerged in a tub full of used motor oil (I'm a mechanic) and have poured coffee on it twice and there have been no adverse affects so far. I have, however flexed it being in my pocket without the otterbox on it and broke the LCD/digitizer combo screen which is about 200 bucks online. Thank god for insurance...

The nano coating on the Droid Razr, is supposed to give it a Water Resistant verification, with enables it to resist ocassional liquid splashes. However, it does not have any waterproof (Submerge) certification, which proves that constantly submerging the device will not be a good idea.
It's Water "Resistant" not Water "Proof."
Yes it can take on water damage. Fresh water, such as dropping it in the tub or the toilet might not hurt it too bad, but if you drop it in salt water, it will eat away the nano-coating and damage the phone.
I don't think constantly submerging ANY electronic device is a good idea...

My awesome Motorola Droid Razr M
Awesome phone!!!! Had mine almost two years now. No problems. I left it in a storm in my driveway on two separate occasions and i also dropped it in the toilet. Without having to cut it off and wait for it to dry out my phone was still on all three times and its still on and popping.
Please I wanna know if I can able install lollipop on my Motorola Droid Razr. Please is it supportive ?

RAZR is splash proof. Not water proof..
I've taken in out during rain. Also dropped it in a jug of water for 10secs for a bet. But I won't suggest anyone dropping inside water for long time.. It won't withstand.
A true death involes being left in a pocket and put in the washing machine. My phone is a 2nd generation replacement after my father forgot to take his phone out of his pants pocket before throwing them into the washing machine. He figured it out just after the fill cycle. The phone was dead. The subsequent replacement (a refurb) had some HW issues but Verizon replaced it with a new phone at the store.
Don't wanna hijack this thread but my Atrix HD was once dropped into rain water (4 months back) It was submerged for atleast 3 minutes and when I pick it up and turned it on it was okay. I turned it off immediately to be on safe side, later turned it on after an hour or so and it's working fine till now.

Question is that if this phone is already w Kevlar, gorilla glass and water resistant. Why the mere for cases and screen protectors
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Maybe.
It definitely depended who you are,for me it is protected out of the box,i use the simple silicon case i got with it,it does the job haha, still haven't dropped it to check tho.
I've heard horror stories of people cracking the screen from 20-30 cm fall. So I installed invisible shield today :=)
Better safe than sorry

Phone went Swimming and Lived
While working on the side of the road, I dropped my Maxx into a water filled ditch without knowing it. I returned to the site 30 minutes later to find the phone face down on the bottom of the ditch. I pulled it out and much to my surprise my default notification sound chimed. When I got back to my apartment, I put the device (still powered on, screen working) in rice for a few hours and pulled it out and went to work with my fully working phone! I was severely surprise it worked near perfectly after the swim.
Now, a week later, I have concluded that the battery life is drastically reduced and that my power button does not function each individual time it is pressed. Insurance claim is in the works....but still, that's a pretty awesome story to tell about the phone surviving the plunge!
@jerseyff bummer, but good to know.

I get the case for looks and better grip. I was never a fan of super thin phones, too difficult to hold.
All I have to say is I got the phone a few days ago and all I was doign with it was loading backup from the couch. I may have put it in the pocket of my khaki's once but the pocket was empty. The next day I noticed there was a small hairline scratch right in the middle of the screen. Its barely noticeable but for someone like me its like nails on a chalkboard every time I look at my phone. Now I have to get a screen protector just to hide it.
I have zero faith in garilla glass's ability to prevent scratches on LCD screens. I can't for the life of me figure out what possibly have come in contact with the screen in order to cause the scratch. The link balls in my pocket must have some real teeth.
Sunday night my girlfriend put my pants in the wash as soon as I came in from working in the yard without checking to see if my pockets were empty. I had left them in my hamper and jumped in the shower
When I got out of the shower, I realized that I had left my phone in my front jeans pocket. I went looking for my jeans but to my horror realized they were in the wash.
I immediately stopped the washing machine and dug all the clothes out. Sure enough, my RAZR was in there.
I threw the phone in a bowl of rice and contemplated it's fate. Called Verizon and found out that I did have the insurance and that it would be a $99 deductible and they would ship me a new one. After that I watched some disassembly videos on YouTube. I decided that I would try to take it apart and dry it all out before going the insurance replacement route.
I went to Home Depot and got a set of torx bits with T4 and T5, along with some others. The kit didn't have a T3 which the video said I would need, but I decided to see how far I could get. As it turns out I was able to remove the T3 screws with the T4 bit by just pressing hard. I also used the dull edge of a butter knife to pry the case open, that was the only other tool I used for disassembly besides the T4 and T5.
I figured I would need the T3 to properly reassemble. I found a kit after work the next day at Fry's that included a T3 along with 29 other bits for a reasonable $11.99. When I got home, I first gave the main board some time under my girlfriend's hair dryer set on medium, just to get any remaining moisture out. Then I carefully reassembled everything. Nothing happened when I first pressed the power button, so then I put it on the charger and started to see signs of life; it was charging the battery! I waited until the battery was 10% charged and the attempted to power up again. Success! The phone booted right up! And everything is working just as before. I am so happy.
This adventure has given me the confidence that I would also be able to install the larger Maxx battery kit! I think I'm going to get it for myself on my birthday!

nice fairy tail story
You wife dropped hers in the toilet, after fishing it out she cleaned it in the sink with hot water then dried it off. It stilled worked so later she told me what happened and I used air to blow more water out of it. I called and paid the $99 for the new one but she continued using her old one for a few days till I got her new one restored. Verizon support said it would eventually begin to corrode inside and stop working. Hope yours continues to work.
Sent from my SCH-I905 using xda premium
One thing that may have helped in my case is that I have a front-loading washing machine, which uses far less water than a top-loader.
I did open the phone up and dry it out completely so I hope that corrosion is not an issue. But I guess we'll see. If it starts malfunctioning a few months down the line, I will blame it on the dip it took in the washing machine.
Isnt razr supposed to be partly waterresistant?
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
It is not water resistant but splash resistant as it was advertised. It was not designed to survive a washing mashine attack.
@Op, good story bro. Nice to know that my phone can survive such conditions.
The razor is also water resistant. It also has a special coating on the boards.

Drop it in the toilet. Seems to be a common occurrence these days
I wouldn't trust it to withstand submersion, but most phones nowadays can take a splash or spill pretty well. Even better if you have a case around it. A teardown showed that the case does have a rubber gasket, so water shouldnt' sneak in through there, but the ports might provide a way in, or at least short out.

That's why I don't want to remove the annoying USB flap. I'm actually thinking of getting some sort of rubber plug for the headphone jack as well. I only ever use Bluetooth headphones anyway.
Between Bluetooth and Qi, we really are on the cusp of completely sealable phones... How awesome will that be?!?

Nice, that would be awesome if the DNA was full waterproof but I wouldn't try it unless someone showed a vid first.
Well the j butterfly is waterproof.
And apparently when the dude took apart his DNA there was a kind of seal that seemed like it helped waterproofing it.
But considering this phone doesn't have ipx5 certification, I wouldn't go around dropping your phone in puddles.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
The only problem I see is the headphone jack, but if that's sealed than the rest of the phone seems pretty watertight.
I'd prefer not to find out one way or the other Would be pretty cool to have an underwater smartphone capable of 50m under water though. Wonder how the reception would be at that depth?
I removed the SIM card
It sits in a metal frame and the top of the holder has a seal on it. It seems like it would be water tight. Damn! you think they would have advertised it as water resistant. Or maybe they just want you to pay for the extra ADH coverage.
The next person who bricks their phone should try to see if it is waterproof.

Thats easy, nill. If you notice in the video his reception goes away almost as soon as he puts it in the sink. High frequency radio waves and water don't mix.
angry birds ocean anyone?
Butterfly is rated IPX5 which is water resistant and not waterproof, that would be IPX7. The question is does the DNA have this rating...
So if its IPX5 rated then its a safe bet to say you can get drunk and piss on your phone and it will function normally the next day
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWWH_kXHs7c
IPX5
IPX5 is the grade at which a phone continues to function when directly subjected to 12.5 L of water per minute from all directions using a 6.3 mm inside diameter nozzle at a distance of approximately 3m for at least 3 minutes.
IPX7
IPX7 is the grade at which a phone continues to function and no water gets inside when it is immersed in a tank filled with still tap water to a depth of 1m at room temperature and left at the bottom of the tank for approximately 30 minutes.

Thank you so much for contacting HTC customer support center.
Bryan, we are happy to hear about your interest in the newest member to HTC’s family of smart mobile devices. Taking a closer look into the DROID DNA specifications, even though it has a flimsy vinyl cover that's hard to pry off and even harder to fit back on, this phone is not waterproof or water resistant.
Thank you again for your interest and also thanks for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us through http://www.htc.com/us/support/email-support or call us at +1-866-449-8358 from 6AM to 1AM EST, 7 days a week.

Then I assume HTC lied and they probably did that on purpose so if your phone is in water you assume it's dead and you have to go with insurance.
I am reporting that as of 8 am this morning. My beloved maxx screen has been shattered. Used it 5 minutes earlier. Took it out of my purse and bam. Didn't drop it, nothing heavy in purse, no keys around the phone. Motorola should be ashamed for making such a weak product. I have owned 7 different smartphones, and done have fallen on concrete and never any damage. I might as well carry an egg in my purse it would probably hold up better. What a shame, I am so sad. Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
Spontaneous shattering??? yeah right!
Believe it or not yes. Nothing that traumatic happened to that phone in the minutes used it prior and it was fine. What ever might have happened was such a minor and light event that no phone should break over. Just be careful the maxx is not as strong as they make it out to be. As I said, I have owned many many smartphones that took a beating and nothing ever damaged the screen.

It has been reported a few times, so it's not that strange that there's a problem with certain devices screen.
I hope Motorola will recognize it and change your screen in warranty.

If you haven't already sent the phone for screen replacement, there's a cheaper and easier fix. Assuming that your phone was a XT912 Maxx, then just buy an XT912 non-Maxx off of Craigslist, then swap your back, chassis and battery to it. This is a 30 minute fix. You can buy a used XT912 non-Maxx for about $125 to $150 now.
BTW... I started a thread on this previously, which has a link to a helpful Youtub video. I've done it and lived to tell the tale. Don't be afraid of doing this yourself.

Otterbox kind of negates the slim size of the RAZR. Might as well carry around a brick from 1998.
My last phone was a small flip phone with no name, just some LG model number. While it wasn't that great, it was water resistant enough to survive me waterskiing with it in my pocket... three times.
So I was wondering, has anyone gotten their phone wet yet? If so, how wet did you get it, and were there any noticeable signs of water damage afterward?
If I remember correctly (because I'm too scared to try it out) these phones should never be gotten wet or fed after midnight. They can go from cute and cuddly to a horrible yet hilarious nuisance. Be careful with your gizmo
http://www.designbuzz.com/10-waterproof-cases-protect-cellphone/
This phone, I would suspect to be even more at risk to intrusion due to the mesh on the sides. I would recommend looking for a waterproof case like the ones listed in the URL above.

Apparently it is water resistant, since there is a rubber seal inside of it, even without ipx5 rating. But don't think of it as "I can go swimming with my phone",but as a last resort.

Haha no, those three times I went waterskiing with it were all accidents. I wasn't planning on getting it wet or anything, but it's nice to know your phone's not toast if you spill a glass of water on it or jump into the pool only to realize your phone's still in your pocket.
