water damage and bricked - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys help and advice much needed.. ok so i dropped my phone in water, it worked apart from i couldn't get signal and the charging port is broke, which is okay for now. Im not sure if the lack of signal was due to the antena thing being corroded so i tried to root and flash a stock rom with the method of doin it straight from sd card... its now briked my phone... is there anyway to unbrick my phone without the need of a usb cable and computer connection..

Are you serious? You can't screw up your phone in more ways than you already have. You're hosed dude.

What "method"? Do you mean you used mobile odin?
It just sounds like the kernel you have doesnt support the rom or you flashed wrong stock rom etc. This is not "bricked".
A bricked device is when your phone will not physically power on or system will not boot and its not possible to enter/use download/recovery modes.
It sounds like your going to need to get your USB port fixed so you can flash correct kernel/rom via download mode, and no there is no magic words you can use.

Your gonna have to change the usb flex, that's the proper name for what you are calling "Charging Port".
You can still go into Download Mode right? You just can't plug your device to your PC.

You might possibly need a new phone

no i put it on my sd card to root then put cm rom on now it just gets stuck at the boot screen..and yes i can still go into to download manager the phone just wont charge or connect to pc

haha yes ive have a galaxy ace for now but i love my s2 thought id try to fix it

Usb flex change.

im not too sure what a flex change is..

You don't know what it is because you are calling it "Charging port"

Is the phone Rooted? What kind of phone is it? I'll assume it has an SD Card. If the phone is Rooted. Do you have a Custom Recovery installed? Such as Clowork Mod. You do not need USB to flash a Rom. You do need a Recovery installed. Pull the SD Card, put the Rom on the Root of your SD Card. Boot into Recovery, do a full wipe. Then flash the Rom.

no my phone is not rooted i can't seem to root it because my computer does not detect usb when plugged in and my phone is sky vega xpress IM-a710k and yes it has a micro sd card i tried rooting through air but still failed any suggestion how to root without using USB cable and any tutorial how to do the flashing my roms are all stocks
You said your in USB Debugging mode. Go into Menu-Settings-Applications-development, make sure it's checked. Didn't find any custom Recovery for the device. I did find Unlock Root that says it will root the device. Link is below.

yup its already checked and already installed the unlock root when trying to press the root button it says plugged in USB ((
Make sure your USB Cable is a good one. Had a similar issue a while back, USB just quit being recognized. Turned out my cable had gone bad. They wear out like anything else. Also, beware of knock off USB Cables.

uhmm okie will try to buy a new USB cable to try it out going to look for someone heading to south korea lol )) and how come if the USB is broken how come it still charges the phone's battery?
You should be able to find the USB Cable you need here in the states, or online. Unless it's something really strange. The cacle will still charge the device, because that does not put much demand on the cable. But if it's transfering data, and it's frayed, or damaged in anyway it will not work.

ohh ic okie will try to find a new cable, i lived here in the Philippines and its very hard to find the cable for my phone because my phone is unknown and not well known in most country except korea where it is came from thanks for your help

Are you sure? I did a search for your device last night. Looked at pics, and specs. Looks like it uses a standard mini USB data Cable.
TEAM MiK

yup it needed a usb cable with 20 pins which is very hard to find here in the Philippines because most phones use here are only the popular ones which has only less than 20 pins in the teeth of the usb cable
Then it's most likely better to just get it from the manufacturer.
gulp then i will have to go to South Korea then hahah ))

[Q] No computer recognizes my phone in either Download/USB Mount-mode

It's really weird.
I've tried it on three different computers (All Windows 7 though)
But it used to work on all three (except for when my desktop USB-ports ****ed themselves up)
I'm beginning to believe the outlet in which the USB cable goes into might be damaged.
I'm about to flash full Stock firmware, cause that's the last time I remember it working (like 3 months ago), and see if it works.
Any other tips?
Currently on WanamLite 11.4, and been flashing back and forward to Cyanogenmod using CWM flashables.
Clean phones USB port first
Second install USB drivers .
jje
Tried installing latest stock LPD firmware, still doesnt work.
Also tried "cleaning" the USB..
Phone must be broken..
**** I cant be bothered with this ****!
I suppose I'll have to wipe every trace of any flashing and send back to Samsung

Seems a bit weird, have you tried using another cable?
I almost bricked my phone once because of a damaged cable...
Cheers,
Stefan.
Try cleaning the contacts between the battery and your phone.
Did you fix your problem?
If not, what exactly happens when you plug it in to your computer?
If "something" at all happens, then you may just need to switch the internal USB switch to use PDA and not MODEM in the PhoneUtils hidden menu. Make sure both USB and UART is set to use PDA!
Dial: *#*#7284#*#*.
did u try to erase kies and install only driver?

Root or flash 2.3.3 without PC or anything using USB port

Hi.
My phone is a GT-I9100, who is stuck in 2.3.3, but the USB doesn't work : when I plug him to my computer, it's charge but the PC doesn't see him (no error message or anything like that, and invisible in device manager). The phone open MTP application, and "connected" appear, but it does nothing. If I try to use the mobile as mass storage (with USB menu or USB debugg), the mobile just charge.
When I search an Update with OTA, the mobile doesn't find any update.
So I need help, I tried change cable, PC, reboot, *#7284#, desinstall-reinstall drivers/Kies, plug in a Live-CD of Debian, clean the micro-usb port with alcohol and brush... I hope nothing of this port for now.
But I don't want to be blocked in this obsolete version and I searched for tricks to root or flash the phone without using the USB port, and I found two things :
- A file which can be flashed in stock Recovery, but ICS only
- Gingerbreak. I tried and it did no work.
Please, anyone's got an idea ? Or a nice developer can create a flashable by stock recovery to unlock this situation ?
Thank you ! (Forgive me if I made some mistakes, it's not my mother tongue)
Please :/
Need some help, Please !

I don't think there is anything like that for our device.
however, If you want to root your gingerbread device without flashing kernel but with PC usb connection (yes, try another PC), I can help you
Wouldnt life be a hell of a lot easier if you spent £7 on a new usb/mic board.Youve had a month to save for one lol.

Love how you have specified the gender of your phone
If it were that simple, the problem would have been solved: I tried three different pc, with 3 different cables, the problem is well at the USB connector of the mobile phone to be damaged. I have root and flashed my Galaxy Spica, Teos, Nexus, and an Xperia Arc and Ray owned by friends, so I have some basics and I already know how to flash with Odin, but thank you for help that you propose.

You can see a breakdown of the phone by diwnloading a service manual off the samsung site.
You dont need a soldering iron to change the usb board.

Well, I ordered and replaced the port, it has not changed anything, I've been seeing a repairman, he again changed the port, and still nothing. Now I'm going to buy a rope and a stool.
Im beginning to think it must be some small component on the motherboard that must be faulty. Was helping a guy on here the other day and he tried 3 of the usb boards and it still didnt work properly.

[Q] i9100 detected by ODIN, but will not even charge from a USB when plugged in

Hi guys,
Its a bit confusing but I'll try to keep it as short as possible. It seems basically that I can charge fine in recovery and download but not in the ROM. Syncing doesn't work at all except download..
I have an i9100m. Ran NeatROM and RootBOX and dabbled with a few roms.
Now I'm not sure if it was the roms or wear and tear but I had ASSUMED until today that my USB port was messed. It would not even charge from a PC nevertheless mount as a mass storage on my PC. It can charge fine from an AC adapter.
Anyway, today I randomly decided to put my phone into download mode and what do you know, the phone detects, and I even see it in ODIN, so I guess my USB port is not messed afterall. Perhaps something with the ROMs and kernels that messed it up?
I think this was around the same time when my Triangle went away.... (I never removed it). In download mode now, it says:
Custom binary Download: NO
Current Binary: SAMSUNG Official
I'm rooted and not stock at all so I wonder if that's the cause?
I was thinking of downloading a stock TAR of my carrier and flashing through ODIN. Do you guys think this is sufficient to "Reset" it back to how it was all the way before? And then I'll root and go back to one of my trusted roms (and not mess around)
Thanks
Do you use the original USB cable to connect your phone? That could be an issue.
Anyways, I don't think that something is messed up software-side if you tried several ROMs.
Worst case is that the USB port of your phone is damaged =/
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9100 mit Tapatalk 4 Beta
Yes I am using the original cable. (all same result but obviously wanted to use the original just in case)
I was thinking the USB port was damaged too because after reading, I guess apparently I accidentally created a usb jig? (triangle went away + stats wiped...)
But that aside, if my USB port is damaged, how come when I'm in download mode, PC and ODIN detect a device is connected and it charges, whereas within the ROM, I get neither ???
Just an update guys,
I used ODIN to flash completely back to stock... and I still cannot charge from PC. Basically computer doesn't see the phone at all. So it has to be a damaged port.. unless theres something else other than the internal SD that I can wipe????? I wanted to wipe everything..
Still really puzzles me though... that ODIN can see it in Download Mode.
One of the mysteries I guess.
Did you try to clean your mini usb port on the mobile? It could help.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
So....your phone only charges on DL Mode?????
Sent from the little guy
I have tried to blow some air in there.. any other suggestions?
Well, the computer only recognizes the device in download mode, Windows sees the device, otherwise it doesn't.Just strange that I was able to flash an entire stock image through ODIN but in the ROM can't even get the computer to recognize that ANYTHING is plugged in (or the phone to charge so the phone doesn't see anything either)
And again, whats even more strange is that i had that one cheap extendable USB cable that probably messed everything up (it removed my triangle..so I accidentally somehow created a jig?) is able to CHARGE the phone even in ROM but still the computer can't see it as a device. LOL
This is so messed. I guess my main thing is even if I go ahead to replace the USB port (get it repaired), do you guys still think this problem would occur... =\

I currently have the exact same problem, except for the flaky usb cable removing your triangle. Mine is still there.
I brought my S2 to a repair shop because i was sure it was my USB port, but the guy there told me it connected in download mode just fine so the USB port should be fine.
Here is what I tried so far
- cleaned USB port
- Used diferent cables
- Used different PC's
- Used different kernals
- Used different roms
- Re-formated/cleared/wiped everything I could find.
Did anyone find a solution? Should I still have my USB port replaced?

Not unless you are already rooted. Does the PC not recognize that you have plugged it in at all or does it just not load the drivers correctly? Best way to tell is to open your Device Manager and plug in the phone. the DM should reload and show something, whether an error or not. If it does not blink out and reload when you plug / unplug the phone, then it's either a hardware issue with the phone's USB port, a bad cable, or bad USB port on PC. And it is possible for a phone to charge correctly, but have issues connecting to a computer if the data pins are messed up. If it IS the phone's port, the repair isn't that bad and could be handle with some patience and simple tools as this one does not involve soldering. You'd need this:

Dude really thankful,
As you say, the PC dosn't recognize that the phone is plugged at all, I try all the usb port on my laptop, different cable, and even different laptop and the same problem keep comming up.
I tried also to reboot in odin mode to see if my laptop detecet anything, but nada, nothing in the DM.
Also, like you expect, it can charge but no data connection, and whene it turned off and I plug it it automaticly turned on by itself.
I pretty convinced that it usb port is screwed.
So, to install a rom my phone have to be rooted!! no way to root it from the recovery mode?!
Thanks again

You can try to clean your USB port of the phone with some compressed air, in case some pocket lint got in there too. Doesn't take much to mess these things up, unfortunately. But yea, I doubt there is a way to root it in the stock recovery as most Samsung phones don't have this option. It'd take less time to just fix it probably then figuring out how to jump through all the other hoops to find a way around it.
