[Q] Updating - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I got a question about updating the OS.
I am currently on 4.1.1 (i9300XXELJ2) and I am currently running on Paranoid Android.
I have seen some updates for 4.1.2 and 4.2 but they are labeled with a different set of characters at the end of the i9300 (i9300xxxx). Are these still compatible with my phone? How do I update?
Thanks!

The characters you are referring about are specific to whatever firmware region you flashed. If you have an unlock s3 then you can flash whatever region suits you. But if you are carrier locked, best be careful as those characters you mentioned also refers to your baseband. Changing those might have problem with your carrier.

My phone is unlocked GSM.
I'm just not sure what "region" my phone is. I live in the States btw.
Sorry, this is my first Samsung/multi carrier and region device.
I'm coming from an HTC Thunderbolt.

unbranding uk 3g phone??

Hey guys just got my s2 today.
its locked on 3G network uk
and i would like to unbrand it to the sim free unlocked version.
Which is the right firmware for me to use?
XWKE2
XEUKD1
Thank you
You'll need to get the unlock code from 3G or buy one online.
after you've unlocked it, you need to flash custom rom, ODIN should be able to do it.

Debrand Guide here but the rebrand is for O2 but same steps if you have original saved 3 firmware .

Hi try with another network sim card. I bought from 3 last week on a 24 months contract and tested with O2 sim and it works. My handset is not locked to 3. Yours may be the same. Please check. (may be 3 is not locking SGS II in the first few batches, I only guess)
Also, I flashed latest official ROM with Odin and it works. Also I rooted my phone.
Ok so what firmware is the correct sim free uk version?
Correct as in probable original KDD dependant upon build date Kies will show latest version for phones brand as of today .
Upgrade KE1 followed by KE 2 which has just been pulled waiting for KE3 .
Unbrand as post says to KDD then you can upgrade using same method when KE3 is released .

[Q] Stop OTA for Samsung GS 2 on T-Mobile

Hello!
My wife has a rooted GS 2 with the stock ROM from TMO. I am concerned that the new OTA (T989VUVKL1)might break her root functionality, repeated update notification, or cause her phone to no longer work. Does anyone know the app I need to freeze to stop the OTA from happening? At some point I will want to upgrade the ROM to the newest one assuming I can keep root access. Thank you for all your help and support!
click SETTINGS/ABOUT PHONE/SOFTWARE UPDATE and uncheck the boxes
Thank you for the quick reply. I don't see that option. After I click on "about phone" there are no such options....
I think I found it... I believe the APK is syncmldm.apk. I will test tonight.

You really should be in a different forum. Your wife's phone is a SGH-T989, which is the T-Mobile branded version of the GS2. The forum we're in now is for the GT-I9100, which is the unbranded international version of the GS2. Same phone in name (Galaxy S2) only. Different phones = slight differences in UI/options.
The forum for the T-Mobile GS2 is here.

Hi I just got two S3, one from England (Orange) and one from Germany (don't know the carrier).
I want to flash both of them but I see several categories for the S3, and don't know what software I can use or not. Can anyone tell me what I need to check or how do I know the ROMS that I can use?
Thanks in advance

You need to find out which model you have. The international version is going to be something like the GT-i9300. If the ROM you wish to flash says it's only for that model, do NOT attempt to flash it to a different model. Doing so may brick your device.
You can find more about the different models and some useful info in the wiki on XDA for the Galaxy S III variants.

Check the model number of both the phones in settings>about. If they are GT-I9300's then you can flash ROM's from this section. If it's something else DO NOT FLASH anything form this section. Check the model numbers given in the other sections (T-mobile, sprint..etc.. etc.,) before flashing.

[Q] GS3 Canadian user seeking which version to use

Hi Guys,
Brand new Galaxy S3 user here and I've just Rooted my phone and I'm searching around on which ROM to flash. Only issue is that I have no idea which version I need in terms of ROM. I know when rooting my phone I followed a different guideline and I don't want to fubar up my phone. I'm with Rogers and I know I followed a US/Canadian guide...
When looking on the get.cm website I saw this
d2usc
Samsung Galaxy S III (US Cell)
which seems to be the closest thing to me but I just want to be sure.
Thanks,
This is International I9300 forum flashing firmware from here may brick another model .

What is the exact model number of your phone? (can be found in settings->about device)
SGH-I747M
I've found the SlimBean ROM for my phone but even that took a while to hunt down.
I tried searching on get.cm but I've found that it never actually gives me my provider (Rogers).

flash unlocked Verizon s4 ?

i have a Verizon s4 . its unlocked. i am using it in india . i cant find any lollipop firmware without Verizon carrier . how do i upgrade my device to 5.0 ?
I'm guessing you want t update to lolipop but can't because Verizon isn't in India? There's Muniz's rooted stock OF1 in the general section.

thank you for your help i am new to flashing . can you give me link please . i don't know what is munzi or of1 . . can i flash it with Odin ? is it safe like original roms?
are you rooted? If not could you tell me which build number your phone is currently at?
As for Muniz, he's a guy who works on rooting our galaxy s4 =)
the latest build for verizon galaxy s4 ends in OF1. it is Android Lolipop, 5.0.1
his instructions are here.
you'll need root to follow the directions.

from the looks of things , this looks risky . i would rather have a unbricked s4 without lollipop thanks for your help. is it possible to root s4 with iroot ?
It's not really that risky.
best way to root kitkat Verizon galaxy s4 is to use towelroot with NC5 build kernal
Verizon's Galaxy s4 is supposed to be unlocked by default, its just rooting is an option just in case you dont like the look of the s4's lolipop. if you want just complete current stock lolipop build OF1 you can download it here and use ODIN to flash, or just use Samsung kies software.
just so you know if you use the sammobile method or kies method to update to lolipop, you cannot go back down to kitkat. Muniz's method with root allows you to return to kitkat builds if you so desire.
by the way what happens when we flash a rom with carrier to a unlocked phone ?

wait a minute . the link you just send me . . isn't it a rom with Verizon carrier . my phone will remain unlocked if i flash it ?????
You do realize that Verizon phones are supposed to be GSM unlocked by default due to some agreement with FCC for their bands?
From here
Unlocking a Verizon phone
Even though Verizon uses CDMA instead of GSM, most of Big Red’s devices come with an unlocked SIM card slot. According to Verizon, its 4G LTE devices aren’t locked and, if you want to bring one of them to another carrier, there is no code needed to program the phone to play nice with it.
However, even though SIM-equipped Verizon phones can be used on AT&T, T-Mobile, or other GSM carriers, the phone will need to have roaming GSM radios in order to make phone calls and send texts in the United States. While most recent Verizon handsets will work just fine on American GSM bands, your mileage will vary when it comes to LTE support.
Even though Verizon doesn’t have an online unlock request, you can call 1-800-711-8300 and request a SIM unlock.

sorry for my lack of knowledge . i didn't know that . i bought it from my friend . i thought it was locked by verizon and he got it unlocked for Indian sims .
well, then the choice is yours, you can root your phone and use muniz's method to allow you the option of going back to kitkat if you desire, or just use normal methods like samsung kies to update normally, which will lock the bootloader so you can't downgrade.
As for me, I'm going to(try to) sleep. 3 AM here X(

well... if it was one of those international versions of the galaxy s4 like the GT-I9500, then you'd probably brick it by flashing a rom for a carrier version like the SCH-i545. or at the very least softbrick it.
I think unlocking phones is something more hard coded than the rom itself. cause, even if for example you have a att phone unlocked, it still has a att rom, and should be able to update the rom while using an att sim
though in your case, I have a feeling whoever "unlocked" your phone never bothered anything other than change the APN settings to that of whatever Indian carrier you were using.
your phone shoulnt have any problems with flashing an update via kies.
check your build number under settings> more> about phone. if they match any of the PDA here, you're on stock. using network signal info app in the play store can also tell you the build number (build ID) and bootloader.
though if your phone doesn't say "custom" when you boot it from power'ed off, that you're probably on a stock rom with no root
