Hi guys,
I use AOKP Jellybean builds and have the latest one. I noticed that my GPS almost never gets a lock anymore, so I'm doing a complete wipe and reflash, but as I was doing this, I came across
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361393
I downloaded the top modem and I was going to install it but was wondering if there was a specific one that works 'best' for the Orange County / LA area? If I'm understanding this correctly, the right modem would help with GPS lock, or am I completely off here?
Also, when flashing a modem do I just put the zip file on the phone, just like a rom, then install from zip? Or are there special instructions? I did a little bit of searching (or else my question would've been even more vague haha!). Thanks for help in advance!
There used to be a map but it got messed up. There might be a pin in your area but most likely not

The link to the modems for AOSP based ROMs is at the bottom of the first post in that thread. Just flash one of those over yours.
I've been using KJ4 for some time. Seems to work ok. I'm in Orange County.
I've used both LE5 and KH7 in the Riverside area, and both seem to be pretty good.
Thanks, I do use AOKP but it seems they do not have a Jellybean modem, will the others still work?

Yes.
Thanks!
They seem to work but not as well as JB ones. Notice that I can lock on to satellites with other JB roms much quicker so I had to leave AOKP.
Like which? The AOKP modems for ICS did not work for me, it just said gps signal lost. I'm trying out the one recommended above for orange county, seems ok
Bad news, all modems I've tried end up with the "GPS Signal lost" message, if they even grab a signal at all.
Do I have to leave AOKP to fix this?

Any other suggestions? I tried a clean wipe install of the same rom to no avail.
Recommended ROM for AOKP 4.2.1
I flashed my ROM to AOKP 4.2.1 and my reception seems to be terrible. I suspect it is that the ROM has a different modem. How to I flash back to the modem I had previously? Is it just like flashing the ROM through CWM?

Are you speaking from experience? I do not understand how a sim card would matter. If I need to put in a new sim card, will any arbitrary card from my carrier do or does it need to be a specific to LTE or 4G or some other requirement?

I was a bit surprised too. At first, I found that reseating my original sim card worked, but then when I reseated again I would lose gps signal quickly. I went to AT&T and asked them to swap the sim just for the heck of it, and sure enough it's worked 2-3 times now, no problem. Could be the way it was seated, who knows

See how it goes, you should be able to tell right away usually. If you have an AT&T nearby, you could also try swapping it out for another sim

I have had my thunderbolt now for over a year, everything has been smooth until now. I have 3g and 4g according to my phone but the actual internet does not work. So I am assuming it is receiving no data. The only time internet works on my phone is when I am connected to wifi. Obviously this can be very annoying.

I have had similar issues on other roms. Have you tried putting the phone in airplane mode for a short period of time and taking it back out?

Is background data turned on?

Background Data: check it if not already
Roaming access for all trips checked?

Also Enable always-on mobile data if not checked
What radio DO you have?

You may well need a new Sim from Verizon if none of that helps.

See how that does then I suppose.
Or you can try the newest radios if you want.
You may possibly be due for a new Sim card.
They tend to wear out after a while and sometimes a new one fixes these types of issues.

That link should be the all in one .zip.
If it wasn't, you'd have to do them separately.
Don't forget to rename them after flashing, so you don't have troubles booting to recovery later on.
So I click on the LTE link. And then once I flash it I am good? Sorry, just want to make sure, and not brick. Will remove once I am done, don't like to rename. Still scares me!

My pleasure.
Hopefully your reception gets better as well.
If it continues to show poor signal, do check with Verizon for a new Sim card.
Being rooted doesn't matter. They don't need to see the phone even.
But make sure they do activate it. Either then or over another phone.
Easier done at the store though.

If you have tried all the settings I suggested on the last page and also tried a new sim and still have issues,
it's either your phone, or Verizon to blame most likely.
So if you haven't tried adjusting your settings like I mentioned on the last page, try that.
Also, it's worth trying the ##778 modem tweak in THIS THREAD as well.

I'm wondering, do I need to flash a radio? If so, which one? I've seen the links of radios from the Wiki page of Cyanogen under Support Downloads, just don't known which one to use or if I'm supposed to.
Thanks for your help.

I have successfully installed this rom. I think it's the most amazing jelly bean rom for galaxy s2 at the moment. I like its smoothing and quick response. feel a bit warm at the back and the battery is losing 1% at every minute while wifi is on. Over all is great. Cheers!
Actually, I've been experiencing data connection problems. My phone works, but it won't connect to 2g/3g for internet.
Should I try switching radios?
If so, which one is recommended? Or do you just try them at random?
Thanks again
On first boot normally can't get mobile data to work because APN was not configured properly (or the list empty), after a reboot mobile data will work again. If it doesn't, then you have to key in the APN manually.
For radio/modem, since there are no changelog released and nobody know what are the differences among them, it is assumed that the latest one will be better.

first and foremost asking or recomending which ROM/KERNEL/MODEM ,is against XDA rules, since all phones are different due to various reasons , hence if u have a an issue with ur modem u have to try a cpl of them on ur own and see the one suits u the best.

It sounds like your apn settings are messed up. Try to reboot twice and then try. If that doesn't work, you will have to find the settings and input them manually.

I flashed this radio:

Now, the data, 3G, works great.
I've been experiencing an issue and have read several post about RADIOS on the SGS2.
I flashed my mobile with the nightly 10.2 CM and after that it started to ask me for "SIM network UNLOCK" Which I can't unlocked, thought it was the version issue so I dl a the newest one and same issue, I tried the ICS stable 9.1 and same issue.
I've read something like radios on the CM support part. Which I dunno where is it yet . If I need to flash it and u guys can help me out to pick up the correct one I'll appreciate it. my model of SGS2 is the i777 from AT&T.
May I install NELP on my CM 9.1? how? where can I get the files to do it?

What phone do you have? This is the thread for the i777 S2 variant, and at least one of the modems you mentioned are for the i9100 variant (don't recognize the others you list).
You can only use modems designed for your device, so if you have an i777 see the link directly above your post.

Sorry, wrong thread. Hadn't time to ask for delete my post :\
Hi guys... I'm trying to solve a problem with my Vibrant, CM10 works except it doesn't give me data connection. But first I have to tell you a bit of a backstory
So, a couple of months ago I was a Vibrant CM9 user, never been able to solve the data problem with CM10 so I stick w/ 9. Then I decided to sell my phone and I put up an annuncment saying the phone has this and that and that and it comes with ICS.
Then CM9 for Vibrant disappeared from CM site (never understood why) and I couldn't sell my device with a ROM that was not supported anymore. I found a buyer and told him that actually I wasn't able to give him the phone w/ ICS and he was fine with it, so I sold the phone.
Now he just called me and said that the CM7 was draining is battery in 4h (never happened to me) and so he had someone installing another ICS custom ROM (he doesn't know which one) but it is buggy and bla bla bla and he asked for my help.
I don't want to ignore him, I was the one who kinda dropped the ball in the first place not giving him what I promised, and the easiest, quickest and better way to help him would be to having him install CM10 and solve the data connection thing. Another easy way would be to get a CM9 zip, but there must have been a reason for them to remove it... right?
Why all the story? To tell you that now I have to fix a problem on a device that I don't have with me
Now I explained everything to him and instructed him to install CM10, and I'm waiting to hear back from him.
I live in Italy and I have a minor carrier, he has one of the big ones... I was hoping that that alone could solve the problem, but most likely it doesn't matter at all.
Any suggestions?
Thank you a lot in advance.
Flashing any Jelly Bean ROM on one of the Vibrants I have with no SIM card installed will yield no cell data when the card is put back in.
Flash the same ROM with the SIM card in and cell data comes up perfect.
If you're flashing with the SIM card out it might be worth trying with it back in...
The other Vibrant I have doesn't care at all if the card is in or out.
Thank you for your help, I don't believe this applies to the Vibrant that I had, but I'll remember it and I'll try to put the sim in and out or something. The guy didn't reply to me yet... we'll see.
In the mean time any other thoughts are welcome
CM7 should NOT be used. Ideally you should run CM10 or CM10.1 to make sure you have the best E911 experience.
Has he tried flashing CM10 maybe it'll work with his SIM card or however he does it.

Did you mean CM9? Because of the EU Bug? Or what is wrong with CM7?
Anyway E911 is not important because in Europe the universal emergency number is that uses the E911 system is 112, but here in Italy we are retarded and we didn't implemented it yet. Seems like it's a work-in-progress thing, but it's complicated because in Italy 112 has always been another emergency number (carabinieri answer to it)... and also because we are retarded.

I used for a while the CM9 on sensation xe and had no issues with data connection. After moving to the CM10 (CM version= 10-20130119-EXPERIMENTAL-pyramid) I'm now having that problem. The WIFI works great but no data connection on the mobile network. I tried rebooting, wiping cach/dalvik cach, reset network to default settings...nothing worked for me.
any help!
So I just wanted to share something really weird and ask if anyone has ever seen anything like it before.
I recently flashed the last AOKP update, and my phone was running phenomenally. I went out last night and my battery died because I forgot to charge it... No biggie. Got home, turned it on, no signal. Odd, since I have pretty decent service in the area. After doing the usual troubleshooting of cycling airplane mode, I tried pulling the battery and sim. That also didn't work. I went into settings to check my APNs, and instead of the usual menu, I saw only 4 options. The option to select APNs wasn't even there. The last one said "Set CDMA..." something. I forget the rest. Wish I had remembered to take a screenshot. In "About Phone", my baseband was blank. Tried reflashing back to LC5 radio. Still nothing. Did a full wipe and reflash of the ROM, and that got me back in business. Right now, all is well. I was just unaware that a phone could magically switch over to CDMA, even if there is no CDMA radio in an i777.
Any thoughts on the cause?
EDIT:
ROM: Task's AOKP 4.14
Kernel: Stock
Radio: UCLL6 when issue started. Now on UCPLC5
Not an issue that's related to the rom, as far as I know. Unless others have reported this issue and I've missed it. If you do a full wipe and re flash as you've done and don't install any programs for a good 24 to 48 hours, and nothing of the sort happens again, odds are it has something to do with an app you installed. Unless your service provider maybe was experiencing problems at the time.

No, definitely an anomaly. Not something that anyone else has reported. I called AT&T to verify if there were any issues in the area or with my account, and everything checked out. I haven't downloaded a new application in months. I restored from TiBu right after reflashing and everything is still good. Like I said, not trying to report it or anything; just looking for thoughts.
You meant APN and baseband NEVER come to live? If that's the case, then I haven't heard or read any report about it.
If it's up and running like normal AFTER 5 minutes, then it's has been reported many many times last week.

This is what I thought. I have a feeling that since AOKP is based of CM, there is code built in to support both CDMA and GSM. Somehow, the software glitched, and made the switch.

HI everyone... I have a question:
I have an at&t sgh i717 with a virgin sim (Im outside of the us), and I need to choose a new modem (I think) because currently I have this t989 uvle1 for tmobile that I had to use to unlock my phone. I'm getting three bars in the signal so my question is or are: do I really need to change the modem? Does the signal have to show more bars so that one can be sure that the modem fits the phone? And, a modem has to be chosen depending on your phone and on your location (since I'm in southamerica)? does having a 2.6.3 kernel affect any of this, should I upgrade it?
I hope I'm not asking too much, sorry,
thanks

Since you have an i717, normally you would probably want to flash back to an AT&T based modem. However, since you're probably not on AT&T's network, your best bet is to try several modems and see which one works best with the provider in your area. My recommendation is to at least base your tests on signal strength and speed tests.

OK, I'm going to try several because just yesterday I found out that my gps didn't work and I think that's related to not having a suitable modem.
Additionally, I performed a speed test and whereas I get 12 mbps for download in my laptop I got 10 mbps in my phone, not much of a deal though.
Regarding signal, I get from three to four bars which isn't that bad and I've made a couple of calls and everything seems to be fine.
Since the gps thing is a real setback I'll flash another modem but I'm also thinking on upgrading to ics because right know I'm on gingerbread 2.3.6 with 2.6.3 kernel so I wanted to know if It's better to flash the modem before or after upgrading.
Thank you for your answers
You will probably have better luck if you upgrade to an ICS or jelly bean based rom.

The gps not working isn't always antenna issues. You can try to update the gps data file. Go to the market and get a gps fix app. You're looking for an app that will replace your gps configuration file with an updated file.

Thanks, good to know that.. it's just that when I received the phone it was working and based on that and some comments on internet I attributed this error to the switch in modem/baseband/radio...
Anyways, I'm installing a rooted ics rom and I'll come back to comment, hopefully positive things
