[Q] Manually updating bootloader? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I've been using ARHD for some time and I think it's the best (stock inspired) rom out there.
After installing version 18.0 it has come to my attention that altough I'm using the ELLA baseband, my bootloader is somehow still ALE8.
Why is that? and how do I update to the latest one?
Thanx.

may I know how you check the bootloader ??
if you want the bootloader, download from below link and flash using pc odin

Yes, I was an app called android system info from the play store.
Thank you for the quick reply. Is it safe to upgrade using odin no matter which rom I have?
sorry for my lack of knowledge

Official update after rooting?

Hello
I had updated my phone to the new base band using official Lg update and then i had rooted my phone and also have installed Recovery from Rom manager and Franco Kernel.
Now a update from Lg update tool pops up asking to update the phone.
Can i update my P500, Will there be any problems?
Can i install any custom roms for the new baseband?
I have franco.Kernel.v1-16082011 are there any better kernels out there now?
My phone vibrates when i receive a Msg even when i have switched vibration off, what do i do to resolve this problem?
Don't know if you can uptade by official way after rooting...(in my opiniom the oficials roms are very ugly and had lots of bloatware)...Yes, you can install any rom(if it's for old baseband just intall old baseband trough kdzupdater)...About kernel:if you are unhappy if the touchscreen lag, flash paolo kernel(v6=vsync on, v5=vsync off)...and about the vibration:try downloading audio manager from market and uncheck(or check) the boxes of vibration...
About msg vibration --go to message--setting --below notification--vibrate--never..

Try this method !
But also keep in mind that after using KDZ u will have to root and install custom recovery again.

Use this method, it has more infos and less chance to bricky your phone and yes... you'l have to root and install recovery again if you install a rom, but if you just change the baseband your phone will not brick and you won't need to root again. For change the baseband you can use this method(don't forget to look at the first thread to check if you have the drivers and the lg modem disabled with more info and maybe something i forget, used to change basebands and roms)

[Q] Some question about Custom ROM and OTA

Hi all, I've a rooted XT910 with system version 672.180.41.XT910.Retail.en.EU. I've read several thread but I'm a little bit confused and I've some question :
1) There is a lot of Custom ROM, some of those requires different kernel version. When I flash a different kernel I flash the kernel of every rom ? Also the kernel of Stock ROM ( I've installed SafeStrap ) ? How do I install only the kernel that I need ?
2) Can I install any OTA from the recovery mode ? Can I install again 672.180.41.XT910.Retail.en.EU from the recovery ? Or Do I have to use RSD Lite ?
Sorry for the noob questions.
Cheers,
Campo

1. No you cant, you can only have one of the kernels
2. You need to install the OTA using the stock recovery, rsd lite is not need because you are already on the firmware

He means that you already have the correct firmware version the OTA will work with, just remember that if you want to apply the update and keep root you must follow the procedure as described in the update post. Don't know what/if it will affect/work with Safestrap installed though ...

is it safe?

hi XDA! just want to ask is it safe to update if your rooted s3 via kies? will it be unroot your device? or does it affect it in such way? thanks more power!

As long as the ROM & CSC are correct you can update a rooted phone through Kies, as far as I am not wrong, whereas you will loose root and have to re-root. What is not working is the OTA update if you are rooted.
Hence the easiest solution is to download the ROM via sammobile or XDA and flash it via Odin or better Mobile Odin (to keep root).

thanks guys for immediate response.I think i will just use odin to maintained rooted. my only problem is i am not sure what guide to use and which is safer? although i research myself through i am just confused so many guides in using odin. my phone is GT - I9300 android version 4.1.1 with a baseband ver: i9300XXDLIB. i just want to update this to 4.1.2 if possible via odin to maintain rooted. If you guys can help me out which guide to follow that will maintain rooted and safe that will be much appreciated!
thanks a lot!

As I mentioned, Mobile Odin is the easiest way as you just select the rom and it flashes incl. root injection. For Odin, simply download the rom you would like to flash (e.g. stock rom from sammobile or prerooted from XDA's general section), and follow the usual steps (e.g. there are easy videos to follow on YouTube & there are many guides in the general section). If you chose to flash a rom that is not yet rooted you will need to flash CF-Auto-Root of CF-Root again.

got it! another question if you don't mind, can i use stock rom using odin without unrooting my device? some people say that if you try to flash your device with official stock rom might unroot phone? is this true or just using odin will prevent your phone from unrooting? no matter what rom you would use. thanks in advance!

there are two ways:
(1) Odin (desktop version): if you flash a stock rom (normal version, not rooted), it will be not rooted, hence you have to root again
(2) Mobile Odin (Adroid Play Store): if you flash a stock rom (normal version, not rooted), you have an option to inject root and directly root it in the process of flashing the rom

I see, the mobile odin i guess is suited for me. since i dont want to unroot my device i just want to update it.
you can always reroot it afterwards. Or better yet, flash a prerooted ROM

If he has unlocked bootloader he can't fix his device via pc companion.
Which device uses? Are you sure he installed a cwm for the device he uses?
Please post here the link of the cwm he used and the device he uses.

Try flashing stock Rom again.
Download an ics ftf file from development section here and flash it via flashtool. I recommend you the .54. Root it and when you're done let me know.

Since you are on unblocked bootloader flash this kernel if you want, it's a great one. Prerooted, with integrated cwm recovery and there is an overclocked version too. here is the link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2299748
Read carefully the instruction on how to install this kernel. Note that you have to install one of this version of firmware: 6.1.1.B.1.54. You can find this version here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028139
Enjoy!

Any suggestion related to patch cert?
I got a customer who wants to downgrade from Android 10 to 8. I know Samsung has anti-downgrade protection and you can't flash older firmware using Odin.
What about rooting the phone first though and flashing the Android 8 firmware using TWRP? Wouldn't that work?

You'd have to flash system, vendor and a kernel that can run Android 8. Just flashing the firmware straight up won't work

I mean, I've done it on other Samsung phones, yes. Updated officially to Pie and then flashed an Oreo ROM that includes system, vendor and kernel images and it runs fine.

I don't need to downgrade bootloader, just need to flash the ROM which includes system, vendor and a working kernel.
I'm speaking strictly about running Android 8, not downgrading. So this method of downgrading to Oreo probably won't help you on your problem
Can we do it with firmware combination file or eng modem?

I guess we both having same issue. I upgraded to UAETG3 and the mobile signals were gone. IMEI status is 'NG' and it says emergency calls only. The binary of aforesaid update is higher and it won't let me downgrade. Have you found a solution?
