Why does this even need a custom kernel and/or ROM? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Just curious to what everyone else's reason is for going to a custom ROM and/or Kernel on this device?
I have ran custom ROMs and Kernels on every single Android device I have owned, but usually to get better battery life and/or performance, but man this thing rocks! Sure I'd love to remove the bloat, but other than that.. how much improvement is anyone actually experiencing?

I more or less just wanted to mod the theme and lower the DPI. I hate all of the clutter Verizon put in the status/notification bar, and the stock toggles are ugly, not to mention they didn't include a Wi-Fi toggle...yet decided to have an ongoing notification to turn Wi-Fi on. Also wanted to use the on screen nav bar which works great with the S-Pen. I also wanted to use root apps like TiBu and especially Directory Bind which allows me to move all of my game data to the external SD card, as some of these games take up multiple gigs of space. Modern Combat 4 and Need for Speed are incredible on this phone!
Here are a couple screenshots. I'm on Beans ROM and it's everything I could ever want. AOSP look with Touch Wiz functionality, and we even have a per app DPI changer, which makes it like Paranoid Android... but on TW!
You are correct, you really don't need to stray far from stock, but Beans ROM is really the best of both worlds!

I love the added features of cleanrom4.05. You get all the additions from android 4.1.2 plus all the features that verizon decided not to use in touchwiz.

I wondered the same thing . I've had my N2 since release day on Verizon and yesterday I rooted and unlocked then flashed Beans and Clean rom I liked alot of the bloat gone and the ability to add any app to multi view but was having some issues with notifications and some apps. May have been me restoring them through Titanium backup with data but in all honesty I just flashed back to stock rooted. Everything just works. So fir me idk . This phone is a Beast out of the box!

I pretty much guaranty the problems where caused by the TiBU restore.
I have never had even the slightest problem with either of these ROMs but I ALWAYS do a clean install and then install my apps fresh.

I wouldn't be able to have 32GB internal memory so I can install apps like nobodies business on a stock Note.

I wanted the bloat gone and to be able to use titanium backup plus the added apps to multi Window, no waiting for Verizon to put future updates out. One of the main reasons I rooted was I wanted a kernel with cpu vulnerability fix built in because who knows when Verizon and Samsung will get around to it.

[Q] Anyone else sluggish on ICS

About a week ago, I updated my rooted TB following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136273
Since the update, my internet has been incredibly slow, MMS aren't downloading automatically (I have to open the txt and click download) and that takes a long time, apps take forever to download and is just an overall disappointment. I have factory reset twice and cleared all cache. Is there anything else that can be don't or is this all normal after the new update?
Thanks guys

Same here, and I tried cache clear and factory reset. Nothing really doing the trick. The browser and message app are my biggest complaints. I'm pretty sure that it can be fixed though....just not sure how.

Its simple the stock clock speeds are to low to run sense 3.6 ICS. That's why it is sluggish. To fix is to root your phone as from what I read there is only one way tho root. Then you can flash either ICS or GB ROM. Santod has a good sense ICS ROMs but waiting for HTC to release the source code so a custom kernel can be made to allow over clocking. That's what sense ICS needs to run better.

Better yet, just wait till the source is released. Santod working on current DeSense version of ICS. Once source is released we can have a real AOSP version of ICS. If you like Sense then your probably out of luck, its so heavy it is hard to run anything other than Sense alone without hogging the memory. Look at your memory, if your under 100, thats when it really get bad, at least for me it took more than a minute just to load messaging.

As much I'm iffy on Sense, the stock ICS OTA (rooted/debloated version of course) seems to be the most stable ICS ROM at this point for me, but I'm downloading the Ice Ice Baby since it's based on the OTA, not the BAMF leak. I haven't had much speed issues with it, granted I can feel Sense's heaviness during operation of my Tbolt, but sometimes it feels faster than the BAMF leak based AOSP ROMs..

Thanks for the tip. Frankly, I didn't know there were alternate launchers for non-rooted phones. The push of ICS on my stock Thunderbolt slowed things down to a crawl. I'm back on the forums looking for solutions and was hoping to find an easy (ha!) way back to Gingerbread with a root and one of the ROM's, but Apex has at least made ICS usable. Too bad it didn't import all my shortcuts, but that's a small price to pay to gain usability again.

I'm a real noob, although with a technical background in computers. So I followed your link to the instructions to root and install a clean ICS ROM. The very first thing it says there is to have S-OFF as a requirement, but no links to do so. Since you followed his procedure, what did you use (link please) to get S-OFF?
Link the the thread for instructions to get an unlocked bootloader and s off with its. This takes a while to do so set aside some time when you're ready. Read the guide completely and do NOT do this out of order.

Is it worth it to flash a new rom?

I was thinking about getting the CyanogenMod 10 Rom over the stock factory one, but I'm not sure if its worth it. It would get rid of your apps for the S-Pen, and maybe some other apps that are useful that I am not aware of. Would anyone say it's worth it?

That depends on what YOU want.
In general, it's obviously worth it or the developers wouldn't spend so much time working on it because there would be no interest, and users wouldn't donate their money to the developers for their work.
If you prefer the touchwiz aspects of the device then flash a TW ROM or stay stock.
I switch back and forth.

This is precisely what I meant by it depends on what you want.
I can live without s pen, it wasn't a selling point for me and I hardly use it. I use multi view more than s pen, and although it's convenient I don't have to have it.
I like the aosp ROMs for the kill app feature, my choice of themes due to the theme engine, and the many on the fly options.
I vote for beans rom. It is themed to look like asop but is still tw so you dont loose anything
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
Definitely a personal choice that depends a lot on your wants and needs. Even bone stock the note 2 is a great phone...a custom ROM just makes it that much better by adding some features that don't come stock. That said, for your first flash I would ease into it with something TouchWiz based like Beans, Clean, etc. See how much you like/use the touchwiz features and then you can decide if you want to try an AOSP ROM.

Sorry, I am still a newb, but which ROM lets you keep stock roms? And which did you guys say is the best for you and why?
"Best" is going to be hard to answer...they all offer some great stuff (and honestly a lot of the features overlap so there isn't a massive difference between them). The Touchwiz based ROMs include Beans, CleanROM, Eclipse, Tweaked and maybe a couple of others I am forgetting. Those will all maintain the Samsung features (S-pen, multi-window, smart stay, etc). I've run Beans and Clean on the Note and both Eclipse and Tweaked on the Charge. All have great dev support and you probably can't go wrong with any of them. Beans seems to have the biggest following based on the threads and as it is my daily driver I would recommend it.

I think you need to rephrase your first question.
The term best is relative. I I like CleanROM because it's 4.1.2 and built of of the international version.
I like Eclipse due to the black themed Gmail and play store.
I like beans because it's more like stock Verizon.
I like Carbon and Rootbox because they're 4.2.2, have features that we can't have on touchwiz ROMs like those above, but you lose the touchwiz only functions.
Personally, I have found myself drifting more and more towards AOSP. I got this phone a little more than a month ago and rooted it in the first week, mainly because I wanted my choice of apps in the multiwindow. I first went with Scott's CleanRom VZW SE, which is pretty much exactly the same as the stock rom with a few improvements. Then I jumped to the CleanRom ACE, which is based of the international version of the Note 2 (which runs 4.1.2), but is still stock TouchWiz. Then I flashed Beans 10, which as many have said here is TouchWiz with some AOSP theming. For the complete AOSP look, I also chose to get Nova Launcher and Widget Locker. And just today, I downloaded CarbonRom, which is 100% AOSP 4.2.2, and I am about to flash.
I realized that the only TW feature I really use is the popup browser. I don't really use the S Pen or any other features, but I am definitely making a backup in case I end up missing more than I anticipated.
Honestly, the best rom I have used so far is CleanRom ACE. The support is great, and to be honest you probably won't need it, since the stability of this thing is awesome. The only issue I had with it was that group messaging does not work properly. I was just feeling the call of the holo theme, so that's why I left. I do not doubt that I will eventually return to the ACE.
The note2 was my first rom flashing. I went with Beans 10. I have not had the any of the problems I've seen others have. I use the s-pen and like the additional programs in multi-view. Could I have lived without flashing a different rom? Of course but I figured with all the power the note2 has why not try to take full advantage.
Make sure you follow the instructions and I have found most members are willing to help.

What is your setup?

So been thinking about trying a custom rom but not really sure since there isn't much to pick from so I'm looking to see what everyone else is doing and how they like what they are getting from there current setup?
I would just give it a week or so and I'm sure some more stable releases will come out

shockingly I'm using TouchWiz. My only complaints with it are the inability to flick away desktop icons, no play store in the top right corner, and the folders are annoying. Why not just leave the stock folder function?
I use Apex Launcher overtop of TW which gives me the customization i want but still maintains all the Samsung functionality that is really pretty cool. After coming from AOSP Roms on my Gnex, its kind of a nice change of pace.
I rooted and removed some bloatware and verizon stuff I knew I didn't need.
Installed novalauncher and called it a day. I plan to stay with the stock kernel. I might be a little jaded coming from having to reformat my last few phones every few months once I started flashing roms.
I am completely stock, no root yet. Just testing her out to see if I am going to keep it first. Battery life and signal issues plagued my last two phones, so those are what I'm testing. So far so good.
Can someone explain what TouchWiz is? I don't see it anywhere on my S4. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt.

Rooted but still on stock ROM, using GoLauncher on top of TouchWiz, Swiftkey dark theme keyboard, haven't removed/frozen bloat yet (but will soon, just rooted yesterday). I'll be eventually loading a custom ROM but waiting out the alpha/beta builds.
Really enjoying the two finger swiping/gestures, though i don't use them much. Comes in handy on the notification bar for quick toggles, and Toucher is a pretty cool app especially when themed properly.
Not a fan of all the notification clutter, but thats just my OCD kicking in.

So I tried it. It booted into the OS just fine, but the phone process was force closing so bad I couldn't get though the setup. I would type a character then it would freeze. Just lost patience, lol. I had backed up my APN but could not get through the setup to restore it.

Can u advice some stable release?

So what ROM is everyone running?

I'm thinking of jumping to the CM nightles, but the new LOTK Rom seems pretty sweet as well.
I've also been thinking of trying out the cleaned up TW ROMs (cleanROM and Hyperdrive). Not really sure what Hyperdrive is, though....
so, yeah. What ROM are you using? Pros, cons?
Running the Jellybeans rom . Everything is running great no issues at all.
I'm running Hyperdrive. Love this ROM!!! I'm also running it on my Note 10.1 and ran it on my SG3. Super smooth and lots of customization options.
Hyperdrive here too.......lots of options to tweak and runs smooth as buttah!
Tried a couple
I tried CM Nightly and AOKP yesterday (both based on stock Android). Both seemed like they were getting close to good daily driver. I'm looking for something based on stock. Both seemed to have GPS issues and AOKP had camera issues as well. I really liked the features on AOKP. (I used to run AOKP on previous phone a GNex). I'll be trying AOKP again soon to see if some of those issues are fixed.
What I really want (may be fantasy) is a stock (or at least stock looking) rom that still has IR blaster, Pedometer & maybe some of the camera features. I also want (again, maybe fantasy) a rom that allows super easy transfer of apps and app data to SD. Right now it looks complicated to transfer and maintain apps on the SD card, especially if one flashes new roms often.

roms
I have run gruesome, hyper drive and beans. ( I think I am an addict. ) they are all really cool. I love the one button kill which is in both gruesome and hyperdrive. beans is also very nice with full blocking mode enabled in one of the framework mods . beans lacks the one button kill though. I have run the faux kernel against all of these a recommend that. I would like to try clean rom next then some of the original development. I love some of the TW fluff. Having said all that, I tried the gruesome wolf rom first so it had to be changed to try more. but I would have probably stuck with it. it was super stable and I am new at this but the thread is super quiet. my money is that their release three will be dope.

I am also using 'Beans' Rom. Fantastic so far. Flashed it with ktoonsez' kernel and it flies. No issues at all. I like to put Nova launcher on it to get that stock vanilla feel while still having the features and functionality of TouchWiz. Dev did a great job debloating the rom as well. All the useless apps Samsung put on the phone (amazon, trip advisor, etc) were removed. Also the ongoing wifi notification icon is gone which really bugged the crap out of me. I'm watching that thread, but waiting for it to get out a few releases first. I've seen PA in various other areas of XDA (for use on other phones) so I'm confident that its going to be a great ROM even though I haven't personally used it.
With that being said, right now I'm on rooted stock but once Hyperdrive RC3 is released I'll be flashing that (still need to figure out what kernel is recommended)!
I'm currently using CM. It's good so far. I'd be using Hyperdrive, but I get stuck on boot (Samsung Galaxy S4 logo, no padlock). I'm happy with it though, it's a great rom. Spend a day with each rom that seems interesting to you before you make up your mind on what you want to use.

Again, all these things work on a stock rooted ROM, it looks great and nothing crashes ever. I consistently quadrant from low 13k to 14k. The phone boots official eveytime (no custom with the unlocked padlock) and the battery life is pretty great on fauxU kernel.
So, if you can't find a setup that just does it for you, give these mods a try, tweak everything out and enjoy. Remember to thank the respective devs for their work!

Yep, everything runs just fine on stock odex.
The icons I found in one of the other USA S4 forums, topic named something like "true icons fixed"... Something about the full pack didn't mesh well with our stock ROM, so I tried somebody's fixed version, and it works great.
How's that lagfix app work on your s4? I'm on stock rooted rom and wanna give it a try, just dont wanna screw something up..

I can tell a difference, if that helps. I've run it since I rooted and have had no issues. Also use it on my tablet with no side effects. Hope that helps lol.
What bloatware have you frozen or removed?
+1 Nova Launcher and Solid Explorer. I run CleanROM and it's as stable as can be.
where did you find the E911 removal? the ones i find are all for deodexed roms
The E911 removal was posted in our section back when the device first launched, can't remember the thread name for the life of me....
Apps frozen:
All things Verizon/Amazon
All printer things
Honestly, just went through everything and froze what I don't use and a few random other things. There are some good guides out for this.
That's awesome. I'm going to try some of those.
Can you flash a rom(for example pacman or cm or aokp and still do all or a lot of that?

Hmm...does anyone else use Lagfix Pro? Reviews seem great for the app, but didn't see many GS4 users reporting on it. Would like to get some feedback on it.

Meh with this amazing hardware we shouldn't see any entropy issues.
It seems to me that a quad core 1.9 ghz processor should be able to handle everything we can throw at it without any lag. Personally, I find the stock s4 to lag slightly. My Note 2 however works like a dream. I guess the different brand of processors really make a noticeable difference.

Not necessarily. The HTC One has an almost identical processor. No lag. Run an AOSP rom. Its touchwiz.

That being said, my note runs tw without issue. That was my point. Both are flagship devices running great hardware and similar software. Could be all the extra sensors they threw into the s4.
