[Q] Anyone else sluggish on ICS - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

About a week ago, I updated my rooted TB following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136273
Since the update, my internet has been incredibly slow, MMS aren't downloading automatically (I have to open the txt and click download) and that takes a long time, apps take forever to download and is just an overall disappointment. I have factory reset twice and cleared all cache. Is there anything else that can be don't or is this all normal after the new update?
Thanks guys

I am not rooted but am experiencing the sluggish operation of the phone. Phone was a lot faster before update. Looking forward to July and getting my Note 2 and getting a real speedy operable experience

Same here, and I tried cache clear and factory reset. Nothing really doing the trick. The browser and message app are my biggest complaints. I'm pretty sure that it can be fixed though....just not sure how.

Its simple the stock clock speeds are to low to run sense 3.6 ICS. That's why it is sluggish. To fix is to root your phone as from what I read there is only one way tho root. Then you can flash either ICS or GB ROM. Santod has a good sense ICS ROMs but waiting for HTC to release the source code so a custom kernel can be made to allow over clocking. That's what sense ICS needs to run better.

Download and use Apex launcher from the Play Store. Very quick, and fixes the lag issue.

Better yet, just wait till the source is released. Santod working on current DeSense version of ICS. Once source is released we can have a real AOSP version of ICS. If you like Sense then your probably out of luck, its so heavy it is hard to run anything other than Sense alone without hogging the memory. Look at your memory, if your under 100, thats when it really get bad, at least for me it took more than a minute just to load messaging.

As much I'm iffy on Sense, the stock ICS OTA (rooted/debloated version of course) seems to be the most stable ICS ROM at this point for me, but I'm downloading the Ice Ice Baby since it's based on the OTA, not the BAMF leak. I haven't had much speed issues with it, granted I can feel Sense's heaviness during operation of my Tbolt, but sometimes it feels faster than the BAMF leak based AOSP ROMs..

Usability back with Apex

Thanks for the tip. Frankly, I didn't know there were alternate launchers for non-rooted phones. The push of ICS on my stock Thunderbolt slowed things down to a crawl. I'm back on the forums looking for solutions and was hoping to find an easy (ha!) way back to Gingerbread with a root and one of the ROM's, but Apex has at least made ICS usable. Too bad it didn't import all my shortcuts, but that's a small price to pay to gain usability again.

I'm a real noob, although with a technical background in computers. So I followed your link to the instructions to root and install a clean ICS ROM. The very first thing it says there is to have S-OFF as a requirement, but no links to do so. Since you followed his procedure, what did you use (link please) to get S-OFF?

Link the the thread for instructions to get an unlocked bootloader and s off with its. This takes a while to do so set aside some time when you're ready. Read the guide completely and do NOT do this out of order.

MeanROM 3.5 issues?

Hi guys, is MeanROM 3.6 running as smoothly for you as the prior beta versions (on the older base) did? I am about to make the upgrade but it seems like the newer one might have stability issues that the prior versions didn't...
I'd ask the guys in the MeanROM thread. They're very nice there.

Yeah, the problem is that that thread is approaching 10,000 replies, and it is getting less useful as it is TOO long, and too many topics all at once
Plus u can't post over there till hit 10 posts funny thing is that doesn't seem to prevent stupid questions.. I've had more issues with 3.6 than any other mean Rom yet... Been on it since 1.8.. but cant ask 4 help cause I'm a "noob" even though I'm not.. sorry jus needed to vent with the last part..

Ah, well that is helpful information. I'm going to hold off on it then as the only thing I am really missing (running stock now) is the wakeup with camera button feature.
Out of curiosity, what issues have you been having?

I don't know if this will help you but I did a factory reset before flashing it. I don't know why, I usually dirty flash all his. I just decided to this time. Also I don't know if anyone else has tried but I finally took the S off plunge after flashing. I did not have any issues with the 3.6 build. Every other build kept saying can't find bamboo.
3.6 is what previous Rom suppose to be. I mean this thing is running great with no known problem for me. Older Rom I was not able to watch hd quality YouTube directly from the browser ( desktop mode), this 3.6 play up to 1080p perfectly from browser.

I thought u had to revert to original base before running lazy panda.. also is anyone still having their SD card gettin wiped ? Thinking about doing it although I'm on 1.12 so no rush
MeanRom 3.6 is by far the best version so far and I've been running MeanRom since the first release. The people that are having problems are the ones that can't update their firmware properly. This is an early release of the new base and Mikey doesn't have all of his tweaks ported over yet. But it is definitely better than stock, and more solid than the others. I am s-off so the upgrade was seamless. The other great thing about MeanRom is you can dirty flash every version. No need to factory reset for each version.

I think it is the smoothest of all his releases. While not all his tweaks are ported over to the new baseband it still an awesome Rom and once he gets tweaks ported it will be even better. Give it some time. I usually dirty wipe all Mike's updates but I decided to clean wipe because of the baseband change. I did that when we went from 1.13 to 1.22 as well don't ever have problems. Great Rom hands down. Flash it, love it, enjoy it!

Whats the latest best ROM to use

So the threads are a mess around here as to what's being updated and what's the most stable rom ETC.
Basically I tried both the liquid smooth roms. the first one I used worked great for a week then 4G stopped working all together, tried twisted liquid smooth version or whatever it was and I've not ever had 4G on it.
so it's been...a good...few weeks since I've had working 4G which is getting aggrivated. It appears there isn't a fully working ICS rom yet which leads me to believe I'll have to go back to Gingerbread.
So what ROM should I use.

haha oh funny story about that rom. I recently used it for 2 weeks, had issues, sucky reception, never once could get 4G apps crashing etc etc and I was getting annoyed and when I Saw someone say there was an update for it and it was in first post I looked at the top of the download link and I'm like wtf that's the sam......oh....oh wait....he puts the most recent update at the bottom...not the top like everyone else....I've been using a Rom from 10/22 for the past week haha. Then I was like oh...well lets install the new one and wallah, fixed every single one of my issues lmao.
How well do these suggested ROMs work with tether? I'm using my phone for my internet currently, and need something that runs well with rooted. Currently I'm running BAMF SoaB 4.0, and find it has good days and bad days, but my phone is stable, and that's good enough for me. But, if there's is something better for running a rooted tether with, I'm all ears.
If it's aosp you want this is the most up to date reliable rom I've found. My daily driver!

I have a stability fetish. I like my ROMs S-T-A-B-L-E.
If sense rom skyraider seemed the most stable for tethering. Ics sense nusense has been pretty stable. Aosp I am using shiftao5p 2.8. It's an old rom but tethering seems pretty good and has better signal reception over other aosp roms.
Best way is to just get titanium backup and back up all your apps so you can restore all your apps+data and lose nothing.

Yes, the camera works fine. Video as well....
I also have kids and won't tolerate missing those special moments.
With SOAB I ended up alternating between Wifi Tether, Barnacle, and Open Garden, trying to find the most stable and best performing one. When I switched to Thundershed (an AOSP ROM) I found the tethering that came with the ROM was rock solid (as is Thundershed itself). I am currently using NuSense and Wifi Tether works flawlessly (I believe NuSense comes with Wifi Tether, but I uninstalled and then re-installed from the Play Store). Just make sure to follow the instructions in the OP.

Yes, both the camera and camcorder work perfectly on NuSense. In fact, one of the advantages of NuSense being a Sense-based ROM is that the camera seems to work better on Sense-based ROMs (seems to take sharper, brighter pictures). I think some of the AOSP based ROMs switch cameras, eg to MIUI cameras.
I have definitely noticed that my photos from SkyRaider (over the past year +) are much sharper and with less noise than they are now on the new AOKP JB ROM.

Why does this even need a custom kernel and/or ROM?

Just curious to what everyone else's reason is for going to a custom ROM and/or Kernel on this device?
I have ran custom ROMs and Kernels on every single Android device I have owned, but usually to get better battery life and/or performance, but man this thing rocks! Sure I'd love to remove the bloat, but other than that.. how much improvement is anyone actually experiencing?

I more or less just wanted to mod the theme and lower the DPI. I hate all of the clutter Verizon put in the status/notification bar, and the stock toggles are ugly, not to mention they didn't include a Wi-Fi toggle...yet decided to have an ongoing notification to turn Wi-Fi on. Also wanted to use the on screen nav bar which works great with the S-Pen. I also wanted to use root apps like TiBu and especially Directory Bind which allows me to move all of my game data to the external SD card, as some of these games take up multiple gigs of space. Modern Combat 4 and Need for Speed are incredible on this phone!
Here are a couple screenshots. I'm on Beans ROM and it's everything I could ever want. AOSP look with Touch Wiz functionality, and we even have a per app DPI changer, which makes it like Paranoid Android... but on TW!
You are correct, you really don't need to stray far from stock, but Beans ROM is really the best of both worlds!

Need a stable ics rom

OK guys, I have finally gotten approval from my wife to root her rezound because she is on her 6th one and having issues. She has been saying no to rooting BC of small bugs in the roms I run.
Now that I have the approval, what is the most stable ics rom out? She likes sense mainly for the picture upload to Facebook. We both had cm7 for the Aria and she liked it... But I think that was because it was so stable. JB is out of the question because she takes/watches videos of/with our son everyday.
I haven't ran a sense rom in about six months now so I don't if the performance and battery life has gotten better either.
Thanks.

To get to t2 right away just tell them that you've done battery pull, factory reset etc. Make sure that you get the point across to them that the phone is having hardware issues that cannot be resolved. You could be more dramatic about the over heating issue and they will take that seriously, as sadly is is a widespread known issue with the Rezzy. Chances are you will be able to get to Tier 2 within 5 minutes and another CLNR Rezound will be sent out to you.

Can't go wrong with Ineffabilis Deus v1.2 if you want a Sense 3.6 rom (same as stock for the WAF). You do need to install the global RUU with it to update to the latest firmware but that's common with a lot of roms now.
Venom is Sense 4 based and also a good rom.

Stable roms?

Hello. I want to flash a rom on my fathers note.
Will anyonw be kind enough to point me out to what is considered the most stable rom.
Preferable nothing over 4.2.
I flash cm10.2 and it has a weird thing where the screen fails.
I have carbon 4.4.2 on my razr hd and it works flawless. But it seems that roms on thia device arent doing so well.
If anybody ia able to help me i would apreciatte it a bunch.

Some moderators have been shutting these kinds of threads down do to the fact that you are asking for someone to rate ones work over another, but I will chime in before that happens.
I am not going to rate one over the other though, as all phones run differently as you are finding out.
2 roms that MY phone had no problem running......Padawan and Black Jelly.
These 2 are close to stock with bloatware removed. Remember this is your dads phone. There are plenty of other roms I like, but require more maintainence. How often are you going to want to fiddle with dads phone.
Not much has been happening on these threads. You will not see many recent issues. That is how stable they are. I will recommend you read and in Padawan, I will refer you back to p. 355 to about p. 380. This was just after update and many issues were solved at that time. My phone never ran better.
If you get lag, read again, you werent paying attention.
Good luck.

If you follow development rom threads you can answer your own question. That is what is expected of people to do rather than create threads like this. That being said I don't really know what you are hearing about 4.4.2 roms but my wife has been running a 4.4.2 rom for well over a week without any reboot. After installing uber,a screen jitter patch, and the camera patch everything seems to work fine. Granted she really doesn't use bluetooth much but when she does it seems to work and there is an echo when using speaker phone on the other end. So really only reason not to go to 4.4.2 would be the speaker phone issue which I believe is present on any rom above 4.2. There is no way I could live on 4.1 or below personally.
Anyway to answer your question read the threads in the development section of this forum and educate yourself. Maybe even go as far as to flash a few roms and try them out and decide which rom is right for you.
Battery on Kit Kat seems to have a bit of a shorter life span also.
What you were stating Butcher, may be the reasons he is asking for stable. Patch here, kernal there, 4.4 has been very stable. But he is putting it on dads phone. If I were flashing dads phone, I would want something I am not having to tweak so much, especially if dad cant tweak himself.
Would you want to change the brakes on dads car every other day. Some roms are like a medication. The phone seems to build up tolerances, then need to make an adjustment.
But yes, read.

Yes thank you.
I would usually just flash away any rom ghat sounds promising to me. And yes i would tweak as much needed to be exactly how i wanted. From overclocking to to voltages, to removing navbar to what ever is needed.
But like you said this is for my father and i would want to have it be the most stable ao he wont have to deal with reeboots and and weird screen fails.
And i have been reading and uber has been mentioner a lot. Some say good some say its bad.
Kinda have been seeing a mixed opinion about it. Thats why i have been asking for what somebody consideres a stable rom.
Also i dont have the opportunity to mess with his phone when ever i want.
He is on gingerbread and god is that slow.
Thank you both i will see the roms that were mentioned here, and read for others.

If you went to the Samsung website, you can get an official upgrade there or even calling the carrier and have the upgrade it. JB is the official upgrade. If something goes wrong there, then at least they are resposible if something goes wrong.
