So this is me second Galaxy Note. My first one came with Gingerbread and I had no problems rooting that phone. That phone broke and I got sent a new one because my old phone was still under warranty. So I'm trying to find a way to root this phone and everything I keep seeing on how to root it is the same method that I used on Gingerbread, however, my phone came from AT&T with ICS 4.0.4 pre-isntalled. I didn't think that the old way to root it would work but I can't find anything that doesn't involve loading a custom image so I tried using the pda.tar root method and now my phone is bricked, stuck at the splash screen and it won't turn back on. I can get it back into download mode, but I do not want to put a leaked ICS rom back onto the phone. Call me crazy but I think there are differences between the stock ICS ROM and the leaked versions.
The leaked version is actually where my problems came from on my other phone, after having put that on there AT&T tried forcing an update to my phone while I was talking to tech support about an issue and that thing is completely bricked. According to their guy the leaked version had a different kernel that the stock ICS ROM and that's where the problem came from and why my phone was replaced under warranty.
Does anyone have good news for me on this thing?
Read the root information in the "note everything " thread , and find the big green arrow .
Notes have been added to the root method , and are found there also ...
Read them twice and you'll see the battery pull fix you need ..
The problem you have is a script being loaded after root that won't allow recovery to stick ...
The fix is easy ...just read the info in the notes .....g
I will check that out, thank you!

And no....your not bricked .....not Even close ....g

That's of no help... I can't get my phone into any recovery, stock or CWM. Seems like he was using a different rooting method than me. I've only ever loaded the one file pda.tar and what he's looking at seems like it wants to load CWM using Odin? I'm so confused, I'm sorry. Thanks for your help so far.
Root is gained by pushing the recovery in DL mode ...
Then the battery trick after that ....
If no download mode exists .....that's a problem .g
Don't think he has the script issue. That was on Canadian Notes that took the OTA update. He is boot looped from the sounds of it.

Still have DL mode, I've tried running pda.tar again which gave me CWM. I pulled the battery out, still the same problem.
I guess I could try CM9, is there a stable build on that yet? I know I should probably do the research looking for it, but it has to do with this thread in a way.
If you're boot looped but have recovery and dl mode then you can flash a ROM through recovery or Odin back to stock and start over.

..root and custom recovery are 2 different things completely. If you're just going to flash a ROM then you don't need to root. You just need a custom recovery. If you want to keep your stock ROM and attain root, then you need to flash the su binaries zip in a custom recovery.

I do not have recovery. Looking for a different ROM to use, my question, do I have to have recovery to get a new ROM installed or can I run that from Odin? Thank

OK..so when you said this^^^, you meant what? Can you get into recovery at all? Cwm or stock 3e? If not then you can't flash a ROM. You can use Odin to flash back to stock and start over.

I just used Odin to get me back to the stock Gingerbread ROM. Then I ran Odin again to get root on the phone using the pda.tar. Before this gave me CWM. I cannot get my phone into any recovery mode at all, CWM or stock. I went back into Odin and loaded a CWM using PDA and I still can't access a recovery menu.
What happens when you try to flash the cwm tar through Odin? Does it say successful and then reboot your phone? How are you trying to enter cwm recovery?
Gubment Cheeze

Also, I'm not aware of any Odin root tar that you're talking about. You flash cwm through Odin and then install su binaries zip to attain root.
Gubment Cheeze
I'm confused ...
If you Odin flashed the GB.tar, and it completed successfully, then you "in fact " have a 3e recovery, as it's included in the .tar image .
Volume up, volume down , and power button being pushed together will open this version of recovery.
The restore won't complete without it ....
If you have a working GB rom ....then Odin push the recovery and done ....g
When I try to flash CWM through Odin it all goes as expected till I try to get into recovery. I've pushed and held VLup, VLdn, Pwr and I've tried VLup plus power. The phone does nothing, just vibrates over and over again until I let go and then it shuts off. The phone boots no problem into GB, the problem after that is that the phone still thinks it has some remenance of ICS on it. A whole lot of google processes don't work and it tries telling me that it's still in power save mode that I know for sure isn't in the GB ROM. I can restart the phone and attempt recovery and I still get nothing. I've even tried updating the firmware with Kies and that gets me nowhere either. Even after I've got GB back onto the phone I've tried flashing a couple different CWM from Odin with no better result.
The fact that I'm booting into GB shows that Odin is working. I'll be looking into Odin to see if it will wipe the phone clean without going into recovery. Otherwise I have a worthless device and I have to send in my old phone and I know I can get working again....
Both volume up and down plus power. After first vibration, release power, but continue to hold the volume buttons. If that doesn't work, download an app from the play store like Flapps PowerTool to get into recovery.

I had a similar issue (stuck on the Samsung logo) the other day when I tried to root ICS. I solved it by entering download mode and flashing one of the leaked ICS ROMS using Odin. Once I had done that, I downloaded the full ATT official ICS ROM and using Kies, updated manually.
Good luck.
That's good advice I'll have to try out and I'll let you guys know what happens. Thank you again!

What will happen, is you will see a recovery called 3e...
and then we can start all over again to root your phone...g....:good:
I have a rooted Australian Galaxy s iii i9300 running stock android 4.0.4 and Siyah Kernel V.1.5.3, both of which I flashed about 3 weeks ago.
My phone has been running perfectly, last night before going to bed I plugged my phone into the charger as usual. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with it, I didn't alter any settings or install anything new and it has been weeks since I've flashed anything. I woke up this morning to see my phone stuck on the 'Galaxy S iii' logo screen as if it had automatically rebooted itself during the night and got stuck. I've tried removing the battery and turning it back on several times but it just keeps getting stuck on the logo screen. I can't enter clockwork recovery mod but I can still enter download mode.
Is my phone bricked?
How did this happen when I didn't even do anything?
What should I do?
Should I try re-flashing the stock ics rom?
Re-root
Try re-rooting it with Odin (from Download Mode), then you might be able to go into Recovery Mode.
Have you recently installed any app? Coz there must be a reason for this to happen.
If the above comment does not work, next step would be to order a jig to force it into download mode.

I can't even get into normal recovery mode, so I'm not sure re-rooting will help (I'll still give it a try though). Assuming it does work, what should I do once I get into Clockwork recovery?

Thanks for the reply. Where can I find the 3 part file version of the stock Rom? Can you point me in the direction of a tutorial for flashing 3 part files with Odin? I'm only familiar with flashing a single tar file.
Seems as if this becomes a common problem, since this is like the 1001st thread about a S3 shutting down while on charge and not being able to reboot.

Really? I did a quick search before posting this, sorry for the repost. Did anyone come up with a solution in previous threads?
I've searched and searched but I still can't find the 3 file firmware. I don't even know what I'm looking for really. Can someone please link me to a 3 part Rom compatible with my phone?
While my search for similar problems before creating this thread yielded very few results, I have since found the other threads Ch0ka was referring to by searching 'There is no PIT partition'. It seems that if flashing a three part file and repartitioning with Odin doesn't work, the general consensus is that I'll have to send it to a service center for repair. Haven't I voided the warranty on my phone by rooting it? will they be able to tell I've rooted it or is it damaged beyond that point? I really can't afford to be paying for repairs right now.
I'm so upset, I still don't understand how my phone could just brick itself overnight! Could someone please give me some advice?

I have a quite similar problem. I thought it might be wise to post it here instead of making a new tread.
I in andvance apologise for my english.
Event that lead to my s3 constantly bootlooping
Entered Clockwork recovery mod.
Updated Kernel to Siyah from SD
Rebooted
Phone updated ( update i used to always click away, might be JB s3 update)
Now my phone boots, shows purple siyah picture, shows bootanimation, asks for simcard pin and reboots again.
this loop takes forever.
I cannot get into clockwork mod anymore.
I can get into download mode (down+home+power)
I am very scared that i ruined my phone :crying: :crying:
Is there hope that i can fix this? or like it is really low chance
rerooting didnt bring clockwork mod back.
installed clockwork mod via odin, but also didnt help.
I would really like to revert the (down+home+power) menu to pre root. because than factory reset is available.
is that possible? please help desperate person who is in need of working phone by tomorrow morning :crying: :crying:

Thanks for replying. My problem is that I don't know what to look for. How do I know which one has 3 files? Which one do I need? Sorry, I know this seems like a stupid question but I've never used a 3 part Rom before, I have no idea what I'm doing. Isn't it really important to use the right PIT file?

I cannot reach the setting to do a factory reset. My UI doesnt start and the button combo doesnt take me to a menu were i can factory reset the device.
What other way is there, trough odin maybe??
Ok, I flashed the experimental 4.2.1 update from temasek earlier. flashed his custom kernel. all worked fine.
Told me my SD Card was 'damaged', which I now understand just needed a fix which was provided. However I decided to just forget it and restore my nandroid backup i'd taken the previous night.
Checked the folder was there, which it was, so booted to CWM, did all the wipes and chose "restore". much to my horror, it failed to find any files.
stupid mistake part: i decided to flash the perseus kernel back over the top to see if the CWM would recognise my nandroid files and restore them
the screen just went mad - had blue lines all over the place, the samsung logo jumped about and the screen went off.
i booted back to CWM and found the touchscreen was unresponsive. everything else worked - buttons, CWM. The phone is also recognised in ODIN, so I grabbed the latest stock JB leak and flashed it. it flashed fine, but it was a middle eastern rom, which didn't help, and the touchscreen was still dead.
the PC still recognised it, so i coped the temasek files back on to see if i could re-flash those, which i did, but still no luck with the touchscreen.
flashed the JB leak again with ODIN, which worked. plugged it in to the PC and copied across a nandroid backup folder i'd taken earlier in the evening last night, since the other one seems to not work. rebooted and it still wouldn't find it.
Now i've got the latest stock rom for the uk but ODIN just won't flash anything - the phone is recognised, the MD5 sum on the rom checks out but i always get "Complete(Write) operation failed" error each time. I plug the phone in to the PC, and it recognises it just fine, but KIES is sitting on the "connecting" screen and not doing anything - i've reinstalled the latest drivers as well.
I'm starting to be resigned to the fact i've killed it, but if anyone has any ideas, i'd be hugely grateful - thankyou
touchscreen dead is getting more and more common. Not sure what is going on but if u cant flash anything from odin maybe u have dead mmc chip or something. Hopefully you resolve it or a trip to sammy service centre hopefully can fix under warranty for u

i'll see what i can do but it's now stuck in a bootloop after flashing the rom i grabbed earlier, so will try another one.
i might have to kill it stone dead if none of this works
each rom i try in ODIN never boots - just goes into a bootloop.
i suppose if the insurers do inspect it, they may well not be able to get to see the flash counter if they can't boot it up - so it'll have a stock, unrooted rom on it anyway, so does anyone think i'll be ok ?

at the moment i can't access anything - it just sits at the samsung logo now. CWM is now no longer accessible either - i pop the battery, wait a few minutes then put it back in. I hold down Up/Power/Middle button and the Samsung Logo flashes, but nothing happens.
I can still put it in to download mode and flash roms with odin, but nothing happens .. i think i'm going to have to accept it's dead
My last roll of the dice is to grab one of the earlier roms from this thread

thanks. it doesn't actually bootloop now, it just sits on the glowing samsung logo and doesn't move.
i just want to get a stock rom back on it and i'm going to just let it go. i'm a bit concerned that on the download screen it says "Custom Binary Download: Yes (19 Counts)". I know I did reset the flash counter not too long ago before I flashed the Darky Rom, so if this is indeed the flash counter, then i've obviously not done something right, so it'll show multiple flashes ..
ok, we've had developments ..
i actually got it in to CWM (don't know how..) and did a factory reset. it then did boot up into the OS but - no touchscreen still.
however, i've just tried connecting it to KIES and it's detected it so i'm going to try the emergency recovery thing ..
he says, as he selects the option and KIES then goes back to "connecting" .. *GROAN* .. and then comes back to tell me it's not supported to upgrade firmware via KIES .. *BIGGER GROAN*
Ok, downloaded and flashed an earlier rom for the UK but still no luck with the screen. Kies won't do any kind of emergency firmware upgrade either so that's that. i'll have to try and get one of those OTG USB dongles so i can get the flash counter reset though ..

Ok so my cousin is using a S2 from 2 years ...and few months back her device software got so corrupted. So she asked me to fix it.
She said if all the data is lost it's okay ..but she wants her phone to be fixed.
So ..i went to the recovery mode and did a factory reset and then rebooted ..when the phone power up ..I got shocked to see that nothing happened the phone was same.So I tried it 3 times more ..but still nothing happened.
The next thing i thought was ODIN ..because kies sucks and is usually slow...so i went through threads then downloaded ODIN v1.85 ...and the firmware from sammobile.
BTW....MY COUSIN has a S II I9100 and she bought it from India only and right now ..it runs on 2.3.6
So...I downloaded this I9100XWLQ2_I9100ODDLPD_I9100DDLPC_HOME.tar.md5 FIRMWARE which I guess is 4.0.3 (don't remember)
and then I followed the procedure of ODIN ...but when I clicked START..after few seconds it showed "Invalid MD5 hash value".
So I googled that ...and found if you remove the .md5 extension it can be fixed ...but I also read that ..it may sometimes lead to bootloops.
So..next option was kies ..so i connected it showed firmware update available ...then it started downloading the firmware next when it was ready to flash the firmware it showed "BATTERY LOW...PLEASE RECHARGE" ..where as I had charged the battery to 100% and then connected it.
The problem is that the software is so corrupted that the battery drains of soo quickly ...even though the battery is not swollen or damaged.
So..can anyone please help me out with this problem ? I'm totally confused.
Don't worry ..I will HIT the THANKS button even if u just reply
Okay now it's getting totally weird !
So, kies this time updated my phone and then my device restarted and guess what ?
It's still the same...2.3.6
No BLOODY CHANGE !
My device is as it as before kies tried to update it !
and now ODIN also worked and flashed and then the process PASSED...but still the phone is same.
I tried all the methods of updating ..nothing happens !
Can someone please help me out ?

Download CM 9.1.0 stable, then follow the procedure of CF-root to root your SGS2 using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399. Then flash the CM9 by factory reset and wipe cache and wipe Dalvik cache. Use siyah kernel to get good performance. Download a .zip file and flash it using CWM.

You can check out your Build No. like I had XWKL1 under About phone, so you can download that firmware from internet by Googling it, and then try to flash it using Odin. As I have heard that if you update your phone via Odin then you can't update it using Kies. By the way CM9 is awesome you will forget the garbage of Samsung after using it.

Hi Team,
I'm having issues w/ my note2 whenever i do the "up+home+power", it won't let me go to the boot recovery screen where i could flash and install a ROM. It's just showing the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 going up the screen and it's distorted (see attached). Well, it is letting me do the down+home+power thing when i rooted my phone. Now, is there anything that i could do to get that boot recovery screen? That's the only problem that i'm getting on my phone, the rest are ok. :crying:
Question #2, could someone give me a link for ROMs that could be flashed or install thru Odin? I believe i need a .tar file. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance!
help, please.

Sir, i haven't gotten any replies yet but others mentioned that i have to put it back on it's stock firmware and do the root process again thru Odin. What happened was, this phone came from a telco company and it's locked, so i brought to a phone shop to have it unlocked. The phone shop guy used Odin to unlock my phone and when he connected the cable, we got that nasty screen while doing the boot recovery up+power+home long press.
So i guess the unlocking process did this to my phone. What i did is used again Odin when i got home to root my phone again but i have't tried to put it back on it's old firmware. I guess that's the process that i lacked.
I want the solution on related this topic

just flash it with the stock ROM and forget rooting it because it will just cause more problems, just take it to Samsung where you know what they are doing and that it will be fixed and just pay up, once in our life we will have to pay to get our phones fixed.
