[Q] Extreme Mods, wanna help? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Ok, this is my first posting.
I have searched everywhere for almost 2 years (droid2 days lol), still nothing.
I am wanting to do hardware mods. Like upgrade camera, memory, RAM, speakers, the works.
I have done this for years on pcs, there has to be a way....any suggestions?
Any positive feedback will be greatly appreciated!!
I could careless about the warranty. I have a friend that owns a metal shop and we have been working on a die to stamp out an aluminum thinner phone structure. I would like to build a phone from scratch, but I am no where near that knowledge yet.
Thanks again!

Two paper cups and a piece of string is all the hardware modding I know. :silly:
Kidding aside I'm curious to see what you come up with. Post pics if ya make some progress.

I have also been interested in doing hardware mods to phones for quite some time. The only device I ever found a mod for was the original Droid. Someone hacked apart the body and added a copper plate as a heatsink. I can dig up the link later when I'm at home.
I really don't think you'll find much support for these kinds of projects, but I will definitely follow this thread with the hope that I'm wrong.
Although, to be honest the only thing I would want to swap out on this phone would be the internal memory. ~11 usable gigs is kind of pathetic.

I will post pics when the structure is finished. I wonder if it is just as easy as changing the parts out. I really hope I can figure it out. I hope that if I figure this out, Ican mmake a android from scratch.

4Well the first thing that come to mi mind is that you need to have some good soldering and desoldering skills. Maybe you can try to do some reverse engineering and find compatible upgradable parts. The second thing you can look is about how to design the boards. Nothing is impossible.

Still no released and fully functional Android?

Kind of makes me feel better missing the great deal, though at $100, the current function still makes the device a bargain.
Based on the time that has passed, seems a easy to install for the masses and 100% functional Android firmware gets more remote, as time passes.
I would still buy one in a second for $100

for 500 dollars it was a ,joke. Its slow, the browser is buggy, freezes randomly for up to a few minutes and the cases develop cracks. If I had paid 500 bucks for mine,I would be very upset.
I paid 168 for mine though. For that price,I got a 32gb tablet with technical specifications similar to 500 dollar tablets. It all of the problems except the poor quality plastics are solvable when we get android. Since I'm the sort of person that likes Lessig around with my computers and phones (and now tablets) a tablet with an open is is something I like. Mine seems only to have developed a single crack. In hp s defense I'm told they will fix it,but if I send it in,I'll get a refurb that could be worse than what I have so I fixed it myself by prying the crack apart and applying a uL of a solution of 20% ethyl acetate and 80% tetrahydrofuran (home made plastic glue) and then I drilled a relief hole at the end of the crack with a very very small drill bit. if I had paid 500 I would be very angry at this. For 168 bucks,I can live with it.
Looking at the progress of cm7,its impressive. ICS will be amazing.
still worth the money, and Android's obviously right around the corner
the primary reason i bought mine ($200CAD w/ targus case) was because the hardware for that price is OUTSTANDING! its the same specs as the HTC sensation/evo3d, and i always knew android would be possible because of this. my biggest concerns for android efficency were the partition table and the fact that everything is done in userspace.
...but then again, i knew it was a challenge that CMteam couldnt resist ;P
why is this retards thread still active?
Because we as a community support the mentally challenged and support the diversity in our forums. Mainly because we are bored and hasn't been any real or good information on this forum in 2 months. Just people asking for the alpha of the cm build( that in itself is retarded)

1. I basically posted would like one and was joking the "I was glad", since clearly posted- I would like one (aready have a Flyer and Thrive, but $100 is too good to pass up).
2. CM7 is not fully functional, in regards to all hardware on the device is working and stable.
3. Calling people idiots and morons is rude and usually comes from people in forums sitting in a dark room, eating Oreos and chugging Cokes. That said, I spent years in the Marines protecting freedom of speech, so have at it.

Not sour, but surprised the Touch is more difficult to bake a 100% functional and stable rom than expected. Probably 80% of the people that bought this hoping they can get Android on it will have no clue how, unless installs as easy as an OTA (including root process), which probably is not likely.
As long as people appreciate it is still a bargain without a dead easy Android solution, they still will be happy. I do believe mentioning this in the OP as well. My Flyer and Thrive are great devices, so nothing but good wine here.
Just would like a low cost Christmas present, but another $100 or so will cover that if not.

If I had posted this in the dev section, I could then kind of possibly seen a just ribbing, but the rudeness is childish. I would say "mentally challenged", but that would insult and demean people that are.

obviously if you are even half as smart as you are portraying yourself to be, you would know this isn't a simple as making a ROM. They are importing an entirely new OS. If its so easy and should have already been done, then why couldn't your smart ass do it?

Never said I was smart, but that even apparently "mentally challenged" can get ahead with their education.
The folks that work on CM7 are precisely why I am surprised. Point being, if they can not do it, it is NOT as easy as a lot of people assumed when they got the Touch.
Even if there is not a 100% stable and functioning Android OS, the device has more than enough function to cover the $100. Then again, the Touch would probably be selling pretty well to begin with if HP did not get so warm and fuzzy with Web OS. Seems having Android rather than Web OS to begin with would meant no $100 tablet liquidation sale to begin with.
Their strategic blunder got a LOT of people a great deal on a tablet.
Hate to spoil this love-fest w/data, but what the heck:

I'm out.
rushless, you should check out the build progress thread on rootzwiki
if you really graduated with a degree in computer electronics you should know that writing an OS for a hardware that is made for another OS is a very difficult task because everything has to be written or acquired (by the graces of the manufacturer of either the device or part) from the ground up. This also includes writing the driver and also creating a kernel that is able to understand the communications between the device (hardware) and android.
whether or not they are 100% functional, it is to be noted that they have done ALOT and at an amazing speed.
Just because you haven't heard any news doesn't mean the chances of android diminishing. Fortunately for the rest of the world, you being up to date with the latest info does not affect the chances of progress happening. That's about it.
p.s. thank you for your service for our country.

Is Transformer Prime worth it?

I have been looking into buying a Transformer Prime Tablet but after coming on these forums I see that it isn't exactly a perfect machine. So how bad are these problems? How bad is the wifi? GPS? The tegra 3 is supposed to be 3x as fast as the tegra 2, is it? I understand that every piece of technology will have its ups and downs and you will always have people complaining but I hear even ASUS started acknowledging this? Also whats up with this new shut off problem and problems with updating or after updating?
Sorry to hit you guys with all these questions but Its a big investment, and my main use will be school.
Thanks in advanced!
Yes. If you want one of the better tablets out there, you desire a tablet that can replace most of a laptops functions and like a laptop you don't need a fully functional GPS you will love it.
If you are like all the other complainers out there about a tablet not having a GPS, then don't bother. We don't need another one of those complainers out there.
Good luck in your choice I am very happy with mine.

What about the wifi and the other common problems? Also I plan on getting a wifi only one anyways so gps can only do so much for me
I just bought mine yesterday and I love it. Theres a noticible speed difference between this and my tf101.
My wifi seems fine, not so sure about my gps because I havent tested it without wifi on, but with wifi it worked fine.
Im a college student and I use my tf in school, not for notes though, nothing will beat the feeling of pen on paper.
I use it for a planner in jorte calender to keep on top of my due dates.
I use it to capture pictures of powerpoint slides for professors that do not upload.
I use it on the bus there to play games, watch movies, watch cbt nuggets, study, or listen to music.
I use it as a second screen (gotta love the dock) for project writeups while I do forensics projects on computers in the computer lab.
I've also replaced my phone with google voice/skype - as I have a 4g hotspot .
Most importantly I use it to show the world how large my penis is by having a quadcore tablet.

GPS is the only common problem. All others are small numbers compared to whole of working devices. Just check out positive thread in my signature. The answer you seek is there. Don't get sucked into all this b.s. on the surface. Majority of prime owners happy with device n have no issues or hardly any. Decide for yourself. Look at both sides. Issues side tend to exaggerate n complain alot more. Not as many people have it as it may seem on surface. Plenty of polls hereto price that.

Check the thread you made..I posted in there
thanks, that was exactly what I needed. On paper it seems like a beast and in reviews it did amazing. But these forums kind of had me skeptical.
I bought many Prime after reviews online and testing one at the local store. But waiting for mine to be delivered I started finding threads about all these issues. Can honestly say I was scared I made the wrong choice.
However, no WiFi or GPS issues
Now - I have a ton of learning to do... this isn't quite what I was expecting and have a lot of setup to do to make use of this new toy.
I feel you. Yesterday I went around looking for them, and gamestop was the only place with them in stock. Their return policy is "once you open it, you're stuck with it". Nervously made the decision to buy it, handed over my 534 dollars. Opened it, perfect unit. Took the biggest sigh of relief.
i got this device a week ago, and everything works great for me. wifi is just fine
I don't have any shut off, random reboot or wifi problems with my prime, although the GPS doesn't work. The keyboard dock works extremely well (and is a handy backup battery). Personally I consider it a required feature for a tablet, which rather limits alternatives.
Although I am very happy with my prime, and it can do everything I require of it (which includes coding), it doesn't offer *quite* the performance I'd hoped for and if you don't feel you need a tablet I'd hold off for another generation. Tablet tech is good now but at the current rate of improvement this time next year it should be great.

NFC for Photon....maybe??

If you can't live without paying by phone and wish you had NFC than here is an SD card that provides it. Bad thing about it is the size. Only 1GB.
Right now it only lists mostly Samsung devices as being compatible but I bet one of those will work in the Photon. They probably just haven't tested it. Might be worth looking into if you have some extra cash and want to give it a shot.
http://www.moneto.me/products-page
From my reading, its junk!!
Only place around me that has NFC is CVS, Rite-Aid, Turkey Hill. If liquor store and bar had it..............
I have word documents larger than 1Gb (although I was using ZumoCast for a minute?)
What exactly does their "App" access on my phone?
I thought about Google Wallet for a minute, sounded nice, but the same applies with them.

Funny as I was jus reading this today where the AG in Calif is sueing some app makers. After I read this, I thought about all the s**t I have on my Photon. How many of us actually install and app and right before you hit install there is a bunch of legal crap at the at the bottom you agree to let them access on your phone? Personally myself, I read it once and that was only because someone here posted about it.

just a thought, but using nfc/google wallet (a recently implemented technology, which seems to be easily hacked especially for rooted users) in combination with alcohol may prove to be an enormous mistake Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have that functionality and ease of use, but it seems like the #1 place a hacker would go to attempt that sort of thing would be a bar with inebriated patrons.

Hence, my post above yours. As soon at you root you might as well take your money out your pocket and set it on the bar and go to men's room!
If you really want some cheap NFC, why not just request a replacement credit card with with NFC inside, cut out the nfc portion, and stick it under the battery door of your Photon. True, you won't have some fancy app to use with it but you still get to swipe your phone just the same.

Broken Glass

Anybody had any luck repairing broken glass on prime? I got new glass on ebay, but it looks like it needs to be glued to a plastic bezel, and not sure how to remove old one, and what to use to glue the new one on.

I am trying the same... It seems as if the LCD is glued to the Glass + Digitizer that you have bought.
The only way to seperate is to use suction cups to pull them apart after heating with a hair dryer/heat gun.
Couple of issues with this approach
- Heating reduces the life of LCD
- With a broken glass it's impossible to use a suction cup and pull both things apart. You may damage LCD screen...
I also had opened a DIY thread to repair prime, but received no inputs so far from others. hence I am assuming it's very tricky.
I am hedging bet on buying a second hand prime (ideally broken charger, broken hdmi, broken motherboard etc...).. and then taking off the entire IPS panel from it to replace on my tablet.
Whatever you do, do let me know how it goes as I am in the same boat.
It is not glued. There is some tape but no heat is needed. There are a couple of articles and videos online if you Google it. Its not hard at all.

There is a movie on youtube for the original Transformer TF101.The process should be almost the same for the TF201.
Use an exacto knife inserted between the two layers and work your way around the entire perimeter of the screen (a heated exacto would probably work best, but a regular would work too. The heated one just slides through the tape better).
Make a mark on the blade of the knife to avoid inserting it too far to risk damaging the ribbon cable (though your new screen should have the cables on them, so probably doesn't matter if you damage the old ones). Using the new replacement screen as a template, you should be able to mark your blade to get deep enough without getting too deep to risk damaging any components.
After running the blade between the glass & lcd around the entire perimeter the 2 should come apart. Scrape off the old tape, and use new foam 2-sided tape (2-3 mil thickness) to adhere the lcd to the new glass. Then you should be able to just reassemble.
Here is a link to the video. It's not great quality (as you will see) but gets the idea across. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brcZLrocBio

I dont understand why people expect other people to do the research for them and spoon feed them..if you cant find something by searching for it on google and need someone to do it for you then you shouldnt even have a smartphone/tablet

There is no need to be abusive, Sir.
I have googled for more than a week now.. and I could not find a single hit on how to replace screen for TF201.
I have seen many hits for TF101 and other tablets... but none for TF201.
Don't believe me... try your google skills?

Not being abusive just stating fact. more and more people on xda expect other people to do the leg work for them and spoon feed them..
I was able to pull up a lot of information on replacing the screen dont believe me? http://bit.ly/R9k9Rs
My point is you could have done the same thing instead of asking someone else to do it, post links and spoon feed you the information. If I said I came across links to something I might not have them handy, just remember coming across them so in essence I would have to search FOR YOU and go out of my way to look for something you could look for yourself. XDA is not a personal tech support service..

Not sure what the heck is your problem.
I have done googling for 1 week now (spending over 2hrs every day).. I have gone through all ebay listings to check for video/instructions to replace TF201 LCD screen, I have gone through 7-10 pages of google results as well...
I have opened my prime atleast 3 times in an attempt to seperate glass from IPS panel...
Ppl have opened prime.. to fix gps. not to replace LCD yet.
There is no video/instruction out there in internet that expains how to seperate screen + digitizer from IPS panel for TF201.
As an end-user I wanted to see some real instructions/video of TF201 before i try it myself... just to ensure I don't screw up my device.
It been frustrating to go through every link on google searches and realize that this hit is for TF101, ipad, iphone screen replacement and not for TF201.
You look to be a smart person, so if you do find anything helpful on internet that is applicable for tf201 screen seperation, please share and help us with. I am checking everyday too...
Hmm - when searching on Google I found a nice link about 3/4 of the way down on the first page which is a video of the Prime disassembly. Pretty useful. Not sure why it's taken you 1 week+ without finding any information when two people in this thread (myself and graffixnyc) in 15secs find links to help you. XDA is NOT XDA-TechSupportForPeopleWhoDon'tKnowHowToSearchGoogle.

You must have found disassembly video. I have seen it too before...
Watch through it... it does not show how to separate digitizer from ips panel.
Folks no offence... but if u really find a useful video that shows how to separate digitizer from ips panel for tf201, please link it and become a hero!
You all are too smart to keep playing 'you can find it there' game...

And you alluded to the fact that you aren't. Don't ask people to do your job. Period. It is not anyone else's job here, or anywhere unless you're paying them for the service, to find things for you. End of discussion.
Just looked into this for entertainment sake, and while there are several videos and howtos about disassembling the prime, I can find no video or tutorial where they separate the LCD from the Digitizer. There are several posts saying that it should be possible, but I can't find someone who did.
Of course, I only looked for a few minutes. Your mileage may vary.

and I thought xda was a place where members helped each other, rather than get nasty and ask for money when someone asked for help....
pls dont be hostile. If u cant help, move on.
If u just tried to open a few google results, u will learn that they are really not about replacing prime screens...
my issue is not googling... but that after several days of googling, that I have still not found anything relevant.
like the OP, some of us have broken screens on our prime and are looking for a way to replace it without expensive RMA. we are seeking help & guidance because there seems to be no instruction on internet on exact steps for prime.
no more arguing from me on this... its not helping me solve the issue either.

Anybody had any luck repairing broken glass on prime? I got new glass on ebay, but it looks like it needs to be glued to a plastic bezel, and not sure how to remove old one, and what to use to glue the new one on.

You are severely mistaken. XDA is not about people doing your job for you. Do not ask others to do your job and then report back. Asking if others have been able to do it is one thing, but to ask others to search and then find and then post back here is not right.
Another thing... do not sit here and tell a senior moderator to move on. It is you who is at fault here in your methodology.

I really tried to find something on how to replace prime screen. could not find it.
I did my job. I have a thread to prove it where I am trying to help xda community with documenting stepsto replace prime screen as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798845
I got stuck at a step, hence I asked for help with someone else on xda who may have replaced screen or finds a resource that i may have missed finding. I am happy to document steps for others benefit.
What's wrong with this?
Finding reproducible steps to replace a prime screen with no damage would be very useful for every one. So many folks have broken screens.
With due respect, being a senior moderator does not make you right all the time.

Will report results in a thread i had created. Done with this thread!

new batch manufactured

Hi
Is this real? 500 units made new freshly arrive China.
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=...li_trackid=1_501bb04e88e8661afc97af315acde3b6
Snapdragon MSM 8660 dual core 双核,1.5GHz, 4G LTE,4G HSPA+
converted to USD is 284
Here it is on eBay.
It's on eBay as well, brand new for $253 with free shipping. I can't post the link, but you know how to search on ebay . . . (Just type the words you want into the search bar and hit enter--it's fairly simple.)
This should get development going, no?
probably not. that has been the price for quite a while now..
when showp will manage to crack it and to get a proper kernel - that would get development going..
it seems to be very hard to get something done with this device.

That's a shame. I didn't realize it was so cheap for so long--is the only thing really holding this tablet back the lack of 4.x support? I thought when it came out, the reason it didn't sell was because it so expensive . . . Now that the price is so low, why wouldn't people start picking it up? Also, I don't see anyone selling it this cheap anywhere else, at least brand new.
Plus, the more people that pick one up, the bigger the demand/incentive for 4.x support, which HOPEFULLY translates into more donations for developers.

Update: the $253 BIN JetStreams are now gone from eBay. There's another guy selling 10 (1 has already sold) for $280 with free shipping.
it started off as ultra-expensive and got very little demand.
seeing the low demand HTC and at&t neglected the device, not bothering to update it to 4.x android. that pretty much killed it.
the rest of the units are being sold around in relatively low prices, most of them refurbished.
since no developer purchased the device - there's no development going. the device has such tiny community that its considered dead. look at the forum here, practically no movement at all. no developer would get his head into this sick bad. we had to find one, collect money and buy a device for an excellent guy to work on. and as good as he is, its still taking months to overcome HTC's **** job on this one.
but all of that doesn't really matter. once showp1984 will get the kernel to work, i'm guessing we'll be jumping pretty much straight to android 5.x. and you will see some action in the forum.
I hope you're right. The hardware on this thing is so good (except for the "low res" screen), it's a shame it got killed off so quickly. Is there anything we, the non-programming members of the rooting community can do to help? Other than send showp our positive thoughts, and eventually, our money. ?
eventually showp will crack this kernel thing, and then we (non-programing) could try and look for as many ROM developers as we can. this will create a pool of ROMs and maybe revive this device a bit.
Ohhhhhh dilema for me, price dropped to 225 us$. Should I? Or wait for new HTC unknown when. Or get 4cores? What say you guys?
This is not the droid you're looking for.
every other tablet goes for this price...
if u can wait - do so and see if the development worked.
if u cant wait - don't touch this one.
Ouach, you got in. I'm a 7" phone tablet person. Was pondering this jetstream because HTC sense, then the sync is so much better Samsung kies.
Current P1000 damaged a few times concern times up, need a replacement soon. Tried wife's 4.7" but impossible to go back now. Size up is the way. I don't game on android. Just work, comic, reading, little bit video during flight or waiting.

Updates?
Hey guru,
I can't reply on the development posts yet, but I was wondering--any word from Dennis on development?
Also, I realized DoomLord already released a kernel for the JetStream . . . What is Dennis working on for us now?
Thanks!
dennis is still working. he's creating a proper kernel using the newest linux versions. that is required for the kernel to support JB versions. since there is no other developer or any similar device - he's doing all the work himself - which takes time (also because he's working on other devices).
what doomlord made was far from perfect, and caused alot of issues for some of us. dennis is much more thorough in his work.
So, what I'm seeing here is that the Jetstream might be worth getting. I've been wanting one for a while now, but just haven't done it. I'm actually waiting to get my wife a Sam Note 10.1 before I get a tablet. She really wants one for work and I want the Jetstream, first, because it's HTC's only 10" tablet, and second, just to play with. I've been watching this forum just to see how much hope there is and it sounds promising.
i would wait for the development to finish. i'm not suggesting the kernel won't work - but it doesn't exist yet. wait for it..
I agree with Guru, but if you just need a tablet for basic stuff, like web browsing, email, Netflix, etc., the Jetstream is fine for all of that. Some apps are not compatible because it's still on 3.1, but otherwise it's a solid tablet for a pretty good price right now. If you NEED ICS or JB, then I'd go with something else, or, like Guru suggested, wait.
