Q: Non-Stock based ROM with motion features? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
just got my SIII yesterday, I love it, but I am a flashoholic and I admit it.
And since all of us have to decide for ourselves how much sin we can live with, I decided to go and flash a custom ROM on it very soon.
I just wanted to know: Is it possible to have a non-Samsung based ROM (read: Android 4.2 ROM) with the motion features incorporated and if so, do they exist?
Because I had a look into the Android Development section, but there are way to many ROMs for me to have a look at all of them
I know it might sound like a stupid question, but I kind of like the motions lol
Thanks in advance!

No, Samsung features are present only in Sammy-based ROMs, because the require the framework

Thought so... Too bad though
Aren't there roms like the de-sensed HTC roms, which offer the HTC sense features but have a complete stock feel (and I am not referring to just another launcher or so, because I already installed nova
Still even though I am a flashoholic I also wonder, is it really worth it, because it seems like my SIII flies at the moment

What he said!
Edit: I have tried a couple of roms. My ORD has now greatly reduced from my HTC Desire days, but I still crave the occasional flash. But so far I can't justify moving away form stock based roms. The missing features outweigh the need for a bit more speed. Even if I do prefer sleek and simple but pretty over bloated and "in your face about it".

If the custom ROM based on the STOCK ROM, does the motion still intact?

Yes.
Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2077019 . It is a mix of stock, AOSP, PA and Jkay's features.

Super excited about that project.
It seems to have motion indeed It seems like you can also change dpi per app, but that's a bit redundant for me

So basically this is a Touchwiz rom, without the Touchwiz interface, but keeping the Touchwiz features? Or is it AOSP with some Touchwiz features built in?

Beats me It has the motion options and is AOSP based
I don't know what witchcraft it is, but I don't care either
THIS will be the first rom for my SIII, I am sure
I hope I'll be as lucky with my choice for this Rom as I have been with mine for the tf700. Picked one and kept on getting better. Never tried another Rom once! That sdbags fellow (the developer of that rom) sure can cook a nice jelly bean treat
By the way, guys, can one of you tell me the easiest way to root, unlock and flash CWM or TWRP on this baby?

Thanks! Since I already have some data on my SIII it's better to first root it.
Back up the data using titanium bu to a micro sd and then unlock? Am I right?

I moved my sensitive data to SD card and then removed it from the device. TB doesn't really work without ROOT access anyway. After that I rooted my phone with the toolkit and installed a recovery. I did try doing a Nandroid in recovery just in case I wanted to go back to stock or whatever, but for some reason, Nandroid has yet to work for me on the SIII. So I took a deep breath and flashed a custom ROM all the same. Never looked back since.

I thought you can still root without any data loss.
Hmm. If that isn't the case then I'd better follow up on your plan

No, no, no... Sorry you misunderstood. You CAN root without loosing data. I rooted with no data loss. But I copied the data over just in case. Root away. Shouldn't have any issue.

[Q] Received a phone that was Rooted, and wanting to get factory ROM?

Hi,
I just purchased the i9100 from someone today and I'm pretty sure that it's rooted. I checked the kernal and it is (2.6.35.7-RAGEmod-U1-v1.1b).
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Also which files would I need? Do I need to use a USB jig?
I have no idea what I'm doing, there is someone on kijiji (local selling/buying site) that says they will flash it back for me for $100, should I just do that?
Thanks everyone!
not sure what you would do, but what i am CERTAIN about is do not pay 100 bucks... just go to the dev section and read up there.. factory reset (turn phone off, hold volume up, power and home keys simultaneously)
Sorry I wasn't being more specific, but what I wanted to do is unroot the phone. When my phone powers on I get a GR check rom boot logo?
My phone seems to be missing a lot of default apps compared to my brothers SGS2.
well theres this program called s-root which can on click unroot your phone. not sure if you need a specific kernel though. ask around in this forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414

Just unrooting the phone should work with SuperOneClick (download to your PC, enable USB debugging on the phone, connect it to the PC and click on the big "unroot" button. If you are running some custom ROM you want to here rid of you will have to flash complete new clean software from Samsung.
But to the missing features: you said you have an older Galaxy S1, oder course there are other (better) apps and a totally new software on the successor, the SGS2.

Yes that's a custom rom, checkrom v5, go to the stock rom thread, pick an upto date rom, ki8 is the newest.
Flash using odin, guide is also in the thread.
That's the only way to remove a custom rom and kernel and restore the removed apps.
Edit: this is the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

You are on a custom rom or a modified stock rom for shure. If you want to get back to stock then you have a thread in the development section that hosts all the stock roms or are links to them at least. Flashing a stock rom will also unroot you phone.
Now as for the flashing part you need to read the stickies search for a youtube video before you do it. You need to understand that flashing has its risks. Although I flashed my phones at least 50 times and never bricked any of them so far you still need to be warned. Its not complicated at all but you need to understand the basic steps. Good luck.

FAQ from TWRP team is here:
Q: Does Rom Manager work with this
A: No
Q: Will you be providing support for Rom Manager
A: Maybe, when I have time, or if Team Win release it before me
Q: Does this mean we cannot easily install ROMs
A:Yes, but the code for that may be added at later date, this is Work In Porgress
Q: Will reboot to Recovery work as normal
A:Yes
Q: I have seen a touch screen version, I thought this one was it
A:This is version 1.x.x, the 2.x.x has the touch screen capabilities, which is in Alpha stages
Q: Does Off-mode charging still work
A: Yes, same as CWM. it will charge when off.

Do you guys like twrp ?
I do its more advance than CWM but it is more functional
anyone else uses this?
I was considering it since I used Amon-RA's recovery for my Hero and preferred it to CMW. How would you compare it to your CWM? And does it also need signed zips like Amon-RA's recoveries (is that was zip verification is for or is that for backups)?

Thanks Xboarder for your hard work man
I have questions please
1. Will this flashed over CWR? Means CWR will be gone in my phone right?
2. I still kept CWR's backups for Stock Rom - unrooted and rooted - and QuikSense on my phone - that's 3 backups. If I flash this, can I use it to restore backups made by CRW?
3. In case they are not compatible does it mean that I will have to restore the stock backup of my phone then flashing this over and using it to do a new TWRP backup for the stock rom?
Thanks in advance

Here's my dilemma: QuikSense 1.5.1 is so stable for me and is it my daily driver
Now with WTRP capability to compressed almost half, that's kinda tempting but if I flash 3.5 with TWRP and if I wanna go back to QuikSense I'll have to reflash CWR in order to restore QuikSense. Gosh ...

Omega is one of the EASY ones. DATA WORKS WITH CORRECT APN SETTINGS PERIOD!
Not going into details here...but
Back up current rom
Wipe dalvik/cache/data
Flash Omega
before you boot Omega, flash YOUR kernel from here
Reboot
Add Verizon apn settings manually
Reboot
Enjoy!
What did not work?
BTW, didn't see you ask any questions in my thread.

I would love to try this but the verizon backup assistant thing scares me. Basically I can't turn this off from the verizon end. I would love to know what kind of messages I will get if that is not turned off. Does it keep coming?
I'd still like to see proof and exact steps with data working. I've tried multiple times and it was a no go so I would suggest VZW users not waste their time until someone confirms data is a go.
Edit: Appears Sprint users are having the same problem. Sorry bro, but you are acting like you personally tried these ROMs on various devices when the fact is that you can only speak for the AT&T variant. Just because stuff is working for you does NOT mean it will work for CDMA users.

There are more roms that are stock based, almost all stockbased roms for Z2 are in Development section, there are a couple of non stock based roms in the same section
I recomend backing up your TA and unlocking your bootloader
That way you will have flashing freedom and also if you need your warrenty back you can flash a stock FTF and restore your TA partition

There are more roms that are stock based, almost all stockbased roms for Z2 are in Development section, there are a couple of non stock based roms in the same section

Best bet is to sell your phone and import one
Also stockbased roms should give info in the xda dev db part on weather they are stockbased or not
I know and thank you greatly for your attention just thought ? or might not be such a bad idea ? that someone with the time ability and care could help us out by making a Sticky thread with the few that actually are available some seem 50/50 and I'm tempted to try but in actual fact that could cost me hours .. Having you point out THE only 3 was a great asset to me believe it or not .. Saves me the regret of reading ? things I can't have ..
Kinda like staring at a Lamborghini . Haha
No thanks again

[Q] NEED Reliable Root Method Without Tripping Warranty

So Verizon has dropped the newest firmware upgrade. I would like to upgrade, but I am suspicious that like all other firmware upgrades, it will cause me to lose root. The Firmware I am talking about it PDA:NK1 / PHONE:NK1 / CSC:NK1 (VZW). I am currently on "NG6" and was forced to use xposed framework plus wanam exposed to achieve device stability. Supposedly, the new firmware is much more stable, and I am hoping that those apps/mods will not be required to achieve stability with it. However, root access is essential to everything I do on the phone, and currently, I have found no posts regarding rooting the device post NK1 upgrade. Please feel free to enlighten me. Thanks in advance!
I do now see that there is a thread at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-root-i545vrufnk1-4-4-2-12-1-2014-t2959613 , but It just doesn't give me enough confidence to go through with it. The user hasn't tested it on all Verizon versions of the phone and I REALLY don't want to lose root or a lot of data...plus safestrap is sketchy at best...

And Wow
Dude the thread by @muniz_ri is legit!
Tried and tested by many S4 users.
And Safestrap is used by 90% of the S4 users here on xda.
It may not be a true recovery that allows for kernel flashing but it beats staying full stock.
I commend these guys for giving us the options we have.
They don't HAVE to do any of this for us.

Older SafeStraps have had no problem but as the newer ones have been released, there seem to be more and more bugs...I have used SS in the past without many problems but SS 3.75 is not currently functional for me...so some help on the matter would be nice...
As far as Muniz thread goes...I think that it is legit as well...I just don't like that it is so new and so few people have commented on it...

I don't use the new iterations that have popped up recently.
It doesn't bother me to flash on my stock side so I use 3.72 version that hashcode put out himself.
If you want slots I would post in the safestrap thread though.
I'm mobile right now but can get you a link to hashcode's 3.72 as soon as I can.

Don't know if there is a SS 3.72 or 3.73 that allows slots...but being able to flash on slots is incredibly important to me as I have clients....that only use stock roms, so I have to quickly be able to go into the "regular" crappy rom and give them specific step by step instructions over the phone. Also, I have yet to find a custom rom that can compete with the battery life supplied by the Verizon stock rom. I am all ears for one that does, but in my experience, at best, I may get half the battery life of the "stock but modified rom."
I tried that root method yesterday from ng6 -> nk1 and it worked without a hitch!
