[Q] [XP] Noob question - How to flash firmware? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hello, guys! I just want to clear some stuff before going through the flashing / rooting process! First of all, my Xperia P is 100% stock and I'm doing it because my SI number isn't available to upgrade yet (my firmware is 6.1.B.0.544 and it's the "latest" one ¬¬'). Is it really possible to upgrade to 6.1.1.B.1.75 via flashing? If so, how do I do it? Is this the step by step?
To upgrade the firmware:
1 - Backup my data so I won't lose any contact information / app files (which program should I use? Is backup and restore from Sony the best option?);
2 - Download and install the latest version of Flash Tool;
3 - Flash this ftf file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089118);
4 - How do I "flash"? Is there any specific option to click / to flag?
5 - After flashing, I restore my files/backup.
To root:
I haven't found anything concrete... Could you help me in this?

Just untick wipe data in flashtool and u won't lose anything

Well, thanks, guys!
It seems that it's not so hard at all... About wipe data from flash tool, is it secure? Won't I lose any features from the firmware since it's maintaining all the data? Wouldn't be better a flash wiping everything?
I'm sorry about all the questions, I just don't wanna miss anything.

Wipe data will erase everything in ur phone memory
Its btr to flash wid wipe data (more stable) I belive

Well, it's done! I've backup my stuff (messages, app data, save games, launcher config, etc) except phone configuration with Backup & Restore and then I flashed the firmware and restored everything back using Backup & Restore again.
It's working and it's a bit smoother! Thanks, guys!
By the way, is there any difference regarding battery consumption from ...0.544 to ...1.75?

God knows
There is no changelog
M a xu user
Only an xp user can tell this

Fixed the 8mp camera bug. But not for everyone.
Though popular opinion is that you needed to do a full wipe when flashing the FW. (Which I will attest to since it worked for me.)
Other than that we're still all waiting for the change log.

[Q] About future updates of SK17i considering the current issue

I am about to root mini pro using the instructions provided by Doomlord in development section. But there is an issue with mini/mini pro that if you unlock the boot loader and try to update software using Sony's update service it bricks the phone.
So what I'd like to know is when the upcoming patch comes out (and the following ones) will I be able to install those in any way (other than sony's service) without having to completely flash the device with the new updated ROM (which, i'm assuming, wipes the data on the phone)?
Thanks!
(Couldnt post in Development section since I'm under 10 posts)
Can someone do me a favor and post this question in the relevant thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227149
Thanks a bunch
Soo ... Tell me... Why do you want root

Not to sound ingrateful or rude but I've read quite a few threads already, and this is a new phone with a specific problem.
Basically, I'd just like to know if it's possible to apply updates in a non-official way without losing erasing phone's data.
---------- Post added at 05:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:02 PM ----------
Main reason is to be able to use wifi at home. I have to establish a connection via pppoe dialer on my PC and I need to do the same on the phone to use internet. Such apps require root.
Backups and some other things would be nice too.
one way would be to relock your phone and do an SEUS update (i will try this if there is a new update soon!).
Other way would be to make a backup with titanium backup, flash the new file (I bet there is going to be a new firmware file in the forum after the update showed up!) and then restore it from the backup.
This worked for me when I switched my phone 3 weeks ago!
Thanks Linkin, I didn't know you can restore from a backup to a different version of ROM. It's my first android device.
Relocking the boot loader is a great solution as well.
Again, thanks a lot. Cheers!
you're welcome.
well i don't recommend restoring system apps from a different ROM, but I've never failed to restore user apps (+ data) and thats the most time expensive part. The few system settings you have to redo can most likely be done in a few minutes, right?
Well I also didn't know that the restore process is selective like that =)
And I agree, system settings are a non-issue, it's all about user apps and data.
Cheers
I always do "batch"-backups (in Titanium Backup) and select "user app + system app" (you know, just in case...).
But on restore, i select "batch" and now you can select ANY app you want to restore, including system apps. But i only handpick the apps i really need to restore and then I'm ready to go.
This is also a way to check if you're really using an apps... this way I only use about 200 MB of my internal storage (I have 220 MB free).

[Q] Preparation before flash custom kernel/rom?

I'm using I9100G(Malaysia)
current : AndriodVer:2.3.6 BasebandVer:I9100GDZKI1 PDA:I9100GDZKJ2 KernelVer:[email protected]#2 BuildNo.:superROM#v2.0
objective to flash : wish to solve music's scratch problem
solve it by : change kernel and ROM
Question:
1.How to backup all the APK/game data/sms content on my original kernel and rom before flash it?(for install on new custom kernal and rom).
2. I'm doing CWM backup in the recovery mode(for safety)...if I restore it back, all data or just some of them will be restore back?(e.g apk/game data/sms content)
3. I wish to flash SuperROM3.1(from superRom2.0) and streetware kernel 0.4.3(from [email protected]#2) to solve it, what preparation and issue that i have to do or pay attention before flash it?, scare soft-brick(e.g. need to restore superROM 3.0 via CWM first before flash it to superROM3.1)...
4. Did superROM3.1 and streetware Kernel match? can put it togather? or have any suggestion for me?
5. [email protected]#2 is custom kernel? or officer?
6. my current basebandVer. and kernal, can flash the superROM3.1 and streetware Kernel directly?
7. Can i done it via CWM only?or need via Odin too??
8. Do i need to anythings on my firmware while/after flashing?
9. Why we need to wipe in recovery mode(e.g. wipe cache, wipe dalvik-cache)? Do it before or after flashing?
im nood in flashing phone, wish can simply explain how to use the CWM to flash correctly....will having any backside effect?
TQ very much

Im sorry, i din't found any app name"SMS app" via Titanium Backup...
may u suggest me, another way to backup sms content, thx ya
it is not another app you need, but just look a little more at the app list in titanium. depending on the language of your phone, the name might vary, but on a stock rom with english language os the entry you are looking for is:
"[sms/mms/apn]..."
of course sms app was just a hint and not the precise name.
also, this app is capable of backing up everything else you need, like pointed out, it is the simplest and most complete app for backups in preparation of changing roms.

[Q] Return to stock Without Losing any Data

Hi Guys,
I'm new in the android world and exploring around with custom roms. however i want to return back to a stock rom. Now i was wondering how can i do that without loosing any of my data e.g. sms, photos, save game data etc. can i return to stock using the same method going into a custom rom, using CMW just wipe dalvik cache and install rom? and will this also flash my kernel back to stock as well?
After returning to stock i will just root that and flash counter isn't an issue i have purchased Triangle Away
Thanks
You can`t, you can however copy your files to your pc and place them back after the flash.I`am using Appmonster pro to restore apps from sd to restore my apps if i`am not rooted.
You can also flash a stock rom and still keep root with MobileOdin Pro.

If you do a system upgrade it`s best to to a data/factory reset and wipe cache and dalvik cache, you don`t have to but it may result in crashings apps and system components. As fot the sms i don`t know, look in the playstore for an app for that. If you want to stay rooted backup users apps with Titanium Backup. and restore them after the flash, don`t know if texts are restored however.

Although I'm still learning a lot with andriod, (having used IOS iPhone jailbroken devices previously)
But I will try to advise / help as best I can -
1) No you dont have to be rooted to flash a ROM. You can flash a ROM and then install a custom recovery (eg like TWRP) and then you may root the device
2) As far as I am aware yes you can, although I am not really up to speed on Kernels
3) If you dont want to reinstall all your apps after a fresh ROM flash, you can use third party apps which backup all your apps (and their data).. there a numerous apps on PlayStore that can do this. Some only backup apps, some backup data and apps - ie Titanium BackUp backs up virtually everything as an example. As my photos / videos are automatically backed up to Google anyway, I never back them up as I can restore via Google anyway. My music collection (due to it being kinda very large) I simply just have that backup up on my PC and manually copy my music across once everything's restored.
4) I am assuming you are referring to SP Tools when flashing. My advice would be to basically do what I did and do a little reading of some threads on Flashing a ROM, there are lots of guides here within the Elephone P9000 section & also on the Elephone official site HERE
Sorry I know its pretty basic advice, but I'm learning too - my advice is to have a read of a few tutorials
Good luck :good:

Flashing custom ROM without losing data

[Another noob question]
Is there a way to flash a custom ROM (like CM13) on SGSD then restore old user apps & data? I've read a few articles online but i doubt they work with our device. (Most include making nandroid backups on recovery and then restoring only the data.)
Hoped there'd be a way for this other than backing up all data on a PC.
Thx to whoever answers.

Different rom has different style of data storing.
So data from stock rom/cm10/11 wont work on cm 13.
But still u can try and see if it works.
Get a TWRP recovery,
Go to backup and then backup data only(u will see tick-marks and u will be able to choose what exactly u wanna backup).
Then flash a new rom and restore backed up data.
And u can backup the whole rom and restore back if u don't like the new rom.

Eg - kernel,system(os),data,ems,bin
But on cwm there's only one option.
Backing up the entire rom.
