I remember when I was looking for all this info I had to jump from board to board to board and
experience tons of trial and error when I was successful with my own device then wounded up
bricking my phone or someone elses based on other factors, or OCLF/CWM not working in recovery,
all that fun stuff.
So I decided to design this guide as a way for a person to make one stop at this guide, and
find everything you need with some tips I had to learn the hardway.
First while YES you can root/flash your phone from 2.2 Froyo official Samsung it is more complicated
and you risk a LOT more. I HIGHLY recommend doing a flash BACK to 2.1 update 1 to make your phone
bone stock to the way it was when you first bought it (Or if you bought it with 2.2 the way it was at launch.
Its a MUCH easier process and almost impossible for something to go wrong in the process. These
steps will help if you have also bricked your phone (Kinda bricked anyways)or its stuck in a bootloop.
Also while rooting is great to apply some Lag Fixes and such there really is no point unless
your going to flash a new ROM (or OS if you're new to this) because you probably don't use your
phone to utilize any of this stuff anyways.
Before you start please be sure to have the drivers working for your phone on your PC.
If you are running Windows 7/Vista and User Account Control (UAC) is enabled, be sure
to right click the Odin icon and select Run as Administrator.
DISCLAIMER:This is my contribution to the wonderful android community here that has given me
a wealth of information on this subject, and had it not been for these boards and others like
it I would not be able to enjoy my phone and the contributions made here by so many hardworking
people. With that said. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU DAMAGING YOUR PHONE.
1.Back up everything in either Titanium backup or to PC (PC backup can only save Pictures etc.
not your message logs/call logs/account settings/etc.) A Nandroid backup should work equally as
well.
2.Shut Down phone into Download Mode so Odin can recognize phone.
-If phone is in boot loop or bricked:
-Plug USB cable into PC
-Take out battery
-Put battery back in
-Hold Vol Up + Vol Down buttons at same time
-While holding inster USB cable into phone
-Odin should now recognize device in download mode
3.Load Files into proper fields. (.TAR into TAR,.PIT into PIT)
4.Do not check any other boxes then defaults. You only want the PIT file and .TAR files for this.
5.Click Start.
6.Phone should begin flash process
NOTE: EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE AT THIS POINT WILL BE ERASED! KERNEL, BASEBAND, ROOT, ETC.
YOUR PHONE WILL BECOME COMPLETELY STOCK AS THOUGH IT WAS JUST PULLED FROM THE SHELF
IN THE UNITED STATES.
7.If process completes the phone will reboot on its own. If it gets stuck in any one process
without moving, just close the program, and repeat steps. Might take a few tries.
Once stock OS of 2.1 Update 1 is applied you can install the update.zip on the SD.
NOTE:YOU DO NOT EXTRACT THE .zip! JUST SIMPLY PLACE IT ONTO THE INTERNAL SD IN NO FOLDER.
If you're running 2.2 froyo and you were just flashed back to 2.1, then you should already have
an update.zip. Thats fine, delete the old one and replace the new one.
1.Now that the update.zip is on your phone the rest is really is. You can root your phone using
this file from your phone. Go into recovery by holding the Vol Up+Vol Down+Power button at the
same time while the phone is off. Let go once the Vibrant logo appears.
2.Select reinstall packages. Phone should reboot and you are now rooted!
If from here you want to flash a ROM over your current OS its simple.
1.When the phone reboots and you see you have SuperUse permissions you are rooted.
2.Go to the market and download ROM manager.
3.Select Install ClockWork Recovery Mod for your specific phone within the ROM manager app.
Find your ROM, Drop it into your SD the same way as the update.zip
4.Shut down your phone and boot back into Recovery Console.
5.Select Reinstall Packages again. This should Install ClockWork (CWM) OVER your recovery console.
If it doesnt take the first time just do it again, it will take you to a different color
console.
6.Once in CWM select the item using the Vol Up or Down buttons and power to select on Install
Zip from SD card.
7.Then pick Choose/Select .zip to Install.
8.Find your ROM, Select it. Select Yes to install.
9.WHAMMY your device is now installing the ROM and you have a flashed and rooted super android phone
on steroids.
Hope this helped.

Good guide for noobs
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Good post I have and will be linking it to some ppl with problems thought you deserved your first thanks lol
Thanks for the responses and any feedback or critique on where/how I can make this guide more accessible is appreciated (PM please)
I wanted this to help people who are new and scared. lol
The guide that s15274n has is like the bible to this. but I know sometimes that much information can be either overwhelming or confusing to some.
So hopefully this helps out some people!
Thanks for the post man. The more ways to help the better. Mine has a ton more detail, but some may not want / need that much.

And that is EXACTLY what I was hoping to accomplish. Sadly though I didn't stumble across your thread last night when I had soft bricked my brothers phone and was doing a million google searches to find the work around on his boot loop frenzied phone (Recovery console was even corrupt).
So after what seemed like 1000 snipits from different articles I was able to mostly compile this. And then throw in some warnings for future rooters/flashers.
Had I known Samsung's own 2.2 release was going to be so AWFUL compared to 2.1 I never would have upgraded. But then again if I probably never would have flashed/rooted. haha. Oh well what can you do.

These seem to be the stock Korean SII firmware for the two main carriers:
For SHW-M250K (KTF firmware) http://matpclub.com/s/pxeboard31/2706591
For SHW-M250S (SKT firmware) http://matpclub.com/s/pxeboard31/2698765
It's a torrent? It's just been uploaded (as in, just then, lol) so no seeds, give it some time I guess. Time for me to go back to the stock firmware maybe.
Anyone more experienced willing to grab them and go over them?
Update:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UYYWHYOY
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=T8Y80YBG
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=32NTASOW
M250K.EE31
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4J24QBTK
anyone find call recording in there?
I desperately need the SHW-M250K (KTF firmware) but I can´t work out how to get the torrent file and the megaupload links seem to be dead (at least they can´t be opened in China).
Whenever o try to download HOME_M250K.EE05.0315_CL186865_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.torrent , I just get another page in korean and can´t get through it
You need to sign up for an account to download the torrent file.
I've attached them anyway, there seems to be two EE05 torrents, dunno what's going on there.
Thanks a lot
I was trying to root a SHW-M250K with XWKDD_insecure but something went wrong, so i think now the best thing to do is re-flash the firmware and try again. Which torrent is for the (KTF firmware)?
Did you root yours?
XWKDD_insecure will work, it'll root fine but you'll be stuck in a boot loop. Just need to reflash the stock kernel afterwards.
Mine's rooted and purring along nicely. I'm using the latest M250K.EE19 with the overclock kernel from here: http://matpclub.com/s/?mid=pxeboard10&category=1191749&document_srl=2804608
I used the S2 ED24 rooting kernel (from here?) to root it first. Again, it did a boot loop but the root worked fine, just flashed the OC kernel afterwards.
For EE05 just flash the rooting kernel, root it and reflash the stock kernel. Done.
I suggest you sign up for http://matpclub.com/s/matcl
Considering you have the Korean model it's almost a necessity.
sorry for all the question but I just want to know If I got this straight.
So all I have to do to is to use Odin to flash the file KT_GalaxyS2_EE05_rooting.zip and then get it back in download mode and re-flash T_GalaxyS2_EE05_stock_kernel.zip
If you're on EE05 firmware, all you have to do is:
1. Go into download mode.
2. Flash the EE05 'rooting' kernel
3. Run superoneclick and root the phone. It'll tell you if it's successful.
4. Go back into download mode and flash the stock EE05 kernel back.
I ran Odin but when i click on the PDA it doesnt allow me to choose the .zip files.
How do I flash with these .zip files?
Uh, you need to extract the tarball from the zip file. Odin will flash using the .tar file.
After a weekend of worrying about the damn phone finally your method worked like a charm, thanks so much!
I still need to figure out how to unlock it but all in due time.
I looked at http://matpclub.com/s/matcl as you mentioned but I can´t read any Korean
But thanks again for taking the time to help me, if you ever need anything from China let me know, I owe you big time .
No worries. They'll be opening up an English section of the site in a few months.
Does anyone know what the difference between the EE05 Kernal and the EE31 Kernal is? Do I want to make sure I'm at the latest version?
when I do *#1234# I get
PDA : M250k.EE31.1419
Phone : M250k.EE17.1456.KT
MOVINAND : EE05
Any idea what that means?
could you upload a Gyroscope driver from your Korean phone for my ke7 rom? i use the m250k ,but i want to flash the ke7````thx~!
thanks for the info.
Actually, I am kind of a newbie in android, now I've got SHW-M250K in my hand.
Basically, the latest firmware of my SGS2 is PDA:EE31/PHONE:EE17, and actually KIES said it is the latest firmware.
I can't understand korean language so well, so I can't understand the link that you show to us. I am still living in Korea now, but actually I am Indonesian
My SGS2 is not rooted, and I don't really familiar with "ROOT", However, could someone help me about how to root and what is the latest firmware of this phone?
Could you please make the "how-to" in a simple way that can be followed by newbie like me?
thanks in advance
I want to root my phone and I'm new this this. Can anyone post a step by step with download links? Can't navigate Korean sites. Are there risks to this?

If you follow the third link in that post, you'll end up at a site where you can download:
[Root]HOME_M250S.EG14.1208_CL380592_REV02_user_low_ship.zip
This is a pre-rooted stock firmware.
Download it, then:
Enable debug mode in your phone's applications>Development settings.
Turn the phone off.
Enter download mode. Hold down 'vol. down+Home+power' in that order. Press 'vol up' for yes.
Run odin 1.8.5 then plug your phone into your computer. Odin should light up, if not then reinstall your phone's drivers. Find them on the samsung site or install Kies.
Open 'PDA' and direct it to the .tar file you get when you extract "[Root]HOME_M250S.EG14.1208_CL380592_REV02_user_low_ship.zip"
Don't touch anything else, press Start.
It'll take a few minutes and your phone should restart at the end. If it takes longer than 5 minutes press the home button or restart your phone.
Done.

Thanks! Got root.
can you upload torrent file m250s i cant download need log from forum korea i dont undertstand reg..
Hello Everyone,
Firstly, I need to say that as a previous owner of an original droid, I was able to root it with no problems on the first go around. However, as a new owner of a Samsung Galaxy SII I am finding root a real challenge.
I have no problems getting into download mode and so on....I have successfully placed the clockworks rom onto the phone with again no problems and I have all the drivers working properly. I guess this is where I am obviously an idiot....because I start the Super One Click and it gets to Step 6 and then stops. I unplug the USB....click the debugg off and then back on and reconnect my USB like directed by many posters. However, in my case it will not continue on and finish the install.....
I reboot and do get the small triangle on boot up ( not that I care too much about that really...do have a jig on order however) but I simply can't seem to get it to root.
Again I have followed all the posts and guides for unplugging, unchecking and rechecking the debugging and then plug back in the USB and still nothing.
Phone works fine....everything works...love the phone...just seems puzzling to me. I have Odin 1.82, I have SuperOneClick 2.1.1 and like I said installed the .tar fine to the phone with no worries....just cant get it to root.
Any advice?
i used (this) with no issues.
Does your phone currently have the new KJ1 update? I've read that this new update will not root with the usual methods.. (I could also be wrong...)

Try this rooter "su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip".
Here is the link for it: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LBTUWW1J
After downloading copy the zipfile to your sdcard and flash it in
CWM recovery just like you would flash a rom using the option
"Install zip from sdcard" in CWM.
When its done reboot the phone and it should be rooted.

that file is in the link I posted above...just an FYI.
I tried using the "su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip" and it failed.
JUST THOUGHT I WOULD TOSS THIS UP IF ANYONE NEEDS IT, THERE IS A COPY IN BLOATWARE LISTS !!!
First what version of KIKAT are you on ? If you are on 4.4.4 NH7 or NK4 the latest upgrade then you can root with Chainfires CF-autoroot or his SuperSu v 1.94, v2.02 or 2.40 this will trip KNOX warranty. Towel Root will not work yet for NH7 or NK4. If you are still on 4.4.2 NC5 then you can use Towel Root to root your device, this will NOT trip KNOX warranty. If you root with Chainfires CF-autoroot or his SuperSu v 1.94 or v2.40 this will trip KNOX warranty on NC5. If you want odin flash a fresh copy of 4.3 NAB, 4.4.2 NC5, or 4.4.4 NH7 here is micmars link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712205 or rpenrod23 [ odin ] (mirrors )http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522638 for NK4 and OC5 you will need to go here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ . Make sure you have USB drivers installed on your PC here is the link http://www.mediafire.com/download/ti6xeoh2lx79zis/Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe
How to flash a fresh copy of a stock OS
1. download the version of KitKat you want to the desktop of your PC.
2. extract zip file to the desktop of your PC it will turn it into a .tar file
3. you need to install Samsung drivers on your PC you can get them from here http://www.mediafire.com/download/ti6xeoh2lx79zis/Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe
4. download odin to your desktop here is the link ( version 1.85 ) https://mega.co.nz/#!oA5xzTAL!LXoVWBVDWN_7SULGPIv6nWx1gCI3ZZlOMSWdRGVX6Uo ( version 3.07 ) http://www.mediafire.com/download/2uxt5u83qxhz6xr/Odin_v307.zip
5. completely power down device, reboot into download mode (hold power button, home button, and volume down button at the same time, then push the volume up button)
6. open odin on desktop, connect device to PC via USB cable COM: will light up in upper left corner of odin doesn't matter what color it is just shows a connection.
7. click the PDA button a box will open click on desktop then on KitKat file to open
8. now don't touch anything else and click start
9. it will take several minutes, then say pass, and automatically reboot device with new OS/ROM ( this will take 3 to 4 min. after you see Samsung logo )
10. Important !!! If the device was rooted or you are trying to downgrade from NH7 or NK4 back to NC5 the device may bootloop on the startup. ( you will know this when the Samsung logo is still on the screen after 6 to 7 min. )
11. to fix bootloop pull battery then reinstall, boot into download mode and use odin to flash the OS/ROM again it will take the second time and boot up.
Let's root the phone, there is a couple of ways. First if you are running NC5 4.4.2 you can download Towel Root directly to the device here is the link http://towelroot.org/ The second way if you are running any version of KitKKat is to use odin to flash the cf-autoroot .tar, just download cf-autoroot here is the link http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ to your PC desktop and follow the same instructions listed above just use the root file in place of the rom .tar file. Remember to choose the right root file for the version of KitKat you running so you don't trip KNOX !!!
Recoveries, the two popular ones are TWRP and Philz CWM. INSTALLING A RECOVERY WILL TRIP KNOX WARRANTY!!! You need a recovery to flash roms so you need to make choice at this point ? Here is the link to Philz CWM latest version 6.48.4.tar http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860 and TWRP here http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/201 download to desktop or downloads.
I run a stock rooted 4.4.2 NC5 with Philz custom recovery version 6.12.9 hltespr https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/hltespr/ . The device was rooted and warranty tripped the second day I owned it. I was in a Sprint corporate Store a couple of wks ago. Showed the tech my rooted note 3. He said I can't touch that, I said what if I unrooted the phone. He said no problem, now I can warranty the phone. He didn't care that the KNOX flag was tripped at all 0x1. Just can't be rooted when you bring it in for service. Sprint doesn't care about KNOX only Samsung cares about KNOX. What is KNOX, KNOX is a program that creates secure encrypted containerization of DATA so it can be sent to another location. So, when Samsung paid millions to the NSA to design the KNOX security containerization system, which apparently they won't warranty will work after the device is rooted, than maybe they care. Can you say track and spy on me !!!
Ok lets install a recovery !!!
1. you need Odin on the desktop of your PC here is the link ( version 1.85 ) https://mega.co.nz/#!oA5xzTAL!LXoVWBVDWN_7SULGPIv6nWx1gCI3ZZlOMSWdRGVX6Uo ( version 3.07 ) http://www.mediafire.com/download/2uxt5u83qxhz6xr/Odin_v307.zip
2. you need to install Samsung drivers on your PC you can get them from here http://www.mediafire.com/download/ti6xeoh2lx79zis/Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe
3. completely power down your device, and boot into download mode (press and hold the power button, volume down button, and the home button at the same time) a new screen will popup then push the volume up button to get into download mode.
4. click on the Odin zip file and extract to desktop, right click and run as administrator
5. with your device in download mode connect it to your pc via usb cable, COM: will light up in the upper left hand corner of Odin doesn't matter what color or number just shows a connection has been made.
6. click PDA box in odin, a box will popup click where ever you have recovery file downloaded, once open it will show up in box next to PDA
7. click start wait till you see pass and success , then your custom recovery is installed.
After the recovery is installed, download a copy of SuperSu to your desktop here is the link http://download.chainfire.eu/641/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip to version v2.40 and for SuperSU 2.46 go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 . Then copy and paste to sd card via USB cable. Now the next thing you are going to do is completely power down the device and boot into recovery. (press and hold the power button, volume up button, and home button at he same time) a menu will come up, click on Install Zip, then sd card to install zip and root device. Boot device and verify it is rooted, then power down, and boot into recovery. Click on backup, MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR ROOTED ROM !!! Then make a backup of EFS file by its self it will show up in your backup file on the sd card or ext sd card depending on where you choose to put it. Copy and paste the efs file someplace safe.
With the Google Play Store download some type of root file manager like ES File Manager or Root Explorer (what I use). Then you can remove/freeze/delete some of the bloatware on your stock rooted rom. Check out this thread on Bloatware removal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2770729
OK lets flash a rom !!!
First, you CANNOT flash a rom that is based on an older version of rom you are currently running. EX: If you are on KK 4.4.2 NC5 you can flash a rom based on NAB or NC5 but you CANNOT use a rom based on mj4 or older read the OP thread carefully . You can run AOSP roms as long as they are based on 4.4+. If you are running a KK 4.4.4 based rom, you will need to odin flash a stock lollipop 5.1.1 OS. Then root the lollipop 5.1.1 OS, install a lollipop compatible recovery. Now you can flash a lollipop based rom.
1. install the new rom zip you want to flash on your sd card via usb cable from PC or download directly to device
2. power down phone completely and boot into recovery
3. from the menu find and wipe cache, delvik cache, and wipe system to install new rom, NOT FACTORY RESET !!!
4. go back to menu and click on install zip then click on where you have the zip ( i.e. sd card ) and install this will take a minute or two
5. back to main menu and reboot device this will take several minutes on the first boot of a new rom
6. enjoy your new rom !!!
Lets do a restore from a backup recovery file !!!
1. completely power down device and boot into recovery
2. go to main menu and click on wipe system to install new rom ( no need to mess with the caches on a restore )
3. back to the menu click on back up and restore, then click on the backup file location ( i.e. sd card )
4. now click on restore
5. when its completed reboot device this will install your original rooted stock rom you made a backup for
Eventually you will figure out that you can make several backups and they have really weird numbered time stamps to identify them.

No, it's my understanding the device has to be unlocked by sprint. There is an access code to do that, I have seen it just can't remember where. I will do a little searching.

I guess if people are still confused, there are a lot of youtube videos that have walk-throughs as to how to root, install recovery, and flash a ROM. Maybe some people might be visual learners?

You can't and you shouldn't . Flashing nc5 might brick your phone that's why we all believe one should always wait for a few weeks before jumping on a new ota as downgrade is not possible
Sent from my NOTE 3 .. size does matter .......

First, if your device came with 4.4.4 NH7 it should be possible to down grade to 4.4.2 NC5. However, is the phone new and under warranty ? If so odin flashing back to NC5 won't trip the knox e-fuse, that happens when you install a custom recovery. Here we go, first BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA TO AN EXT SD CARD OR PC !!! ( i.e. pics, music, videos etc.) From my post here is the link for odin https://mega.co.nz/#!oA5xzTAL!LXoVWBVDWN_7SULGPIv6nWx1gCI3ZZlOMSWdRGVX6Uo download to PC desktop. Then go to micmars and download a copy of NC5 here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712205. It is a zip file so just right click and extract it to your desktop, that will change to a .tar file in a folder. Next extract the odin zip to your PC desktop, and open the odin file as administrator. Now connect your device to your PC via a USB cable. A box will light up in the upper left hand corner COM: doesn't matter what color it is just shows a connection. Now click on the PDA box a new window will open up click on desktop then click on the NC5.tar file to open. Then the file show up next to the PDA box don't touch anything else just click start. Sit back go get a coffee it is going to take few minutes.
Now here is the fun part, if your phone boots up GREAT !!! If it doesn't, and bootloops no problem this common when going back to NC5 it happened to me. Just pull the battery, then reinsert battery, and boot into your stock recovery ( hold the power button, volume up button, and menu button at he same time) once there navigate to factory reset with the volume button and click on factory reset with power button. Finally the phone should boot into NC5, now go to settings/general/about phone and see what version you have.
If you are still on NH7 no problem, it didn't stick go through the process again. Others have had the same thing happen to them, and it took the second time, in the end it's worth it.
I had all kinds of problems on NH7 and so have many others, I went back to NC5 and have had no problems, I'm going to stay here and wait till android 5.0 (lollipop) comes out. Enjoy !!!

You sent me here for the thread "How to root Galaxy Note 3".
Thing is, I know how to use CF Auto Root, but I'm pretty green even at that. Maybe a total of 10 phones for my family.
I took root off a Note 3 (sm-n900p) by upgrading to the new firmware (NK4). It was having issues and he wanted to go back to a stock. Now he needs root again and chainfire doesn't list a file for the NK4.
Chainfire says he needs a image file from the update to add to his list, but I do not have it. He also states that in most cases, root will work on the new firmware. But if does not, that's where things go black, what to expect and how to recover?
And from what I read, I can't go back to an early firmware?
Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have to go to work will be back tonite if you want to wait so I can help as you do it or you can try it yourself even you loop it (like what happened to me and most people ) don't panic just follow the instructions in post # 14. You need a clean copy of NE5 go here enter SM-G900P in search on right, you will have to register but its free , I don't see a XDA site for stock NE5 so here is the link http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ enjoy !!!

Yeah, I kind of figured that, plus the the model number is one letter different too. I would only try it if you are sure I won't lock up his phone using CF Auto root. I've been at this since the 27th, even throw money at chainfire, although I doubted that would do anything. I needed to donate anyway to show some support for his work.
My other question, can I put it back to the firmware he was on? It's was 4.4.4 (NH7). Then I could root his phone if I can't do it as you said in post #14.

No guarantee it won't bootloop !!! I did on my note 3, you just have to take a step back and keep going. Let me give you an overview, but then you need to follow the individual steps in my first post for each part you need to do.
Ok, the first thing you are going to do is BACK UP ALL THE DATA ON THE DEVICE !!! I.E. music, pics, and videos. These are found on the internal sd card copy and paste them on the desktop of your PC.
Now download Odin to your desktop and extract it. (get the link in 1st post) Download a fresh copy of NH7 4.4.4 to your desktop (get the link in 1st post) and extract it. Now follow the instructions in the first post to flash a stock rom. Let it boot up, if it bootloops take off the back and pull the battery. Let it sit for two minutes, replace the battery and hold the power button, volume up button, and the menu button at the same time. It should boot into a stock recovery, if it DOES use the volume button to navigate to factory reset and push the power button. Let device reboot this will take a couple of minutes. Now go to settings/general/about device and see what version of KK you are running.
If it DOES NOT boot into a stock recovery, and goes back to your custom recovery or bootloops. No problem, pull the battery let it set for a couple of minutes reinstall battery then hold the power button, volume down button, and menu button at the same time and boot into download mode. Go to the first post and flash the rom again it will stick the second time.
Once you are back to bone stock 4.4.4 NH7 just follow the first post for rooting and recoveries. I know this is your friend's device and you don't want to mess it up. So before you try anything check here http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ go to SM-G900P NK4 and try the CF-auto root for the s5. The s5 and note 3 are pretty much the same. You can try to flash the root through odin the worst that can happen is it will fail and not install. Then you are back to try and going back to 4.4.4 NH7.
Hi guys!
This is my first time to post a thread in this forum, I just bought a Samsung Note with model SHV-E160S, Android Version 4.0.4 and Build# IMM76D.VH29. I know that this is a Korean Variant and I'm using it here in Philippines (I can send SMS -- Openline). I don't know if this phone is already rooted, I don't know how to check.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to upgrade this phone from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 then later on upgrade it to Android Lollipop 5.1 and I don't know how. It will be a great pleasure if someone help me or direct me on what should I do.
I'm totally new to android devices and I'm not familiar on how to upgrade, update or root an android device.
Thanks!
Hello guys, any ideas? Thanks!

You'll be able to find your firmware here https://mega.nz/#F!IxJTDDQQ!TTgzxjX8d7EnzemoIj0ogg
4.1.2 was the last official update from Samsung for your device. If you want to update to newer than that, it will have to be done via updating with a custom recovery and custom rom, such as TWRP recovery and CyanogenMod 11 or 12/12.1.
Follow upgrade instructions from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 and sub your firmware file instead of N7000.

Thank you es0tericcha0s for this information.
What I'm trying to do right now is updating my SHV-e160s from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 using Kies v2.6. Unfortunately, I'm getting this error "Failed to run firmware upgrade: unknown error.". Until now, I'm afraid to update my firmware manually as I don't have much knowledge to do that.
1) Download firmware and Odin
2) Open Odin as admin
3) Load firmware in PDA or AP slot depending on which version of Odin used
4) Boot to Download Mode and plug in your phone
5) Once Odin recognizes it ( will show highlighted - COM:xx where "xx" is any number, doesn't matter which ones) hit start
6) Grab a drink and a snack and come back in 10 minutes or so
7) If device bootloops, reset in recovery
Once the files are downloaded, the whole process takes less than 10-12 minutes or so. Everything you need is in the guide I linked to besides the firmware you need, which is in the Mega link. If you need a video guide, there are dozens on YouTube. I find it much easier to use than Kies and once you have it working, then there are not many things you will do that restoring with Odin and a factory reset won't get you out of.

Hello, sorry I forgot to ask, will this root my device? I'm afraid I might bricked it.
No, this is just the official update. As long as the download is good and you follow those directions, you won't do anything that won't be easily recoverable if it doesn't work right away. Soft bricking is not a big deal and nothing you would do here would cause anything worse unless you unplug the phone in the middle of something important.
---------- Post added at 09:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:20 AM ----------
And because you'll probably ask... It's easy to root. Just download Chainfire's SuperSU zip, put it on your phone's storage and use Odin to install TWRP recovery (just like you do with the whole firmware package) , boot to recovery before it boots to the OS and install the zip. Reboot and enjoy.

Hello again es0tericcha0s, I haven't tried the instructions that you gave me yesterday as I'm still downloading the firmware, last night I encountered an issue after enabling my Bluetooth, something like "NFC Service has stopped." just keeps on popping up. So I turned off the bluetooth then restarted my phone, it went well for a while.
After that, I enabled my 3G Cellular Data to check what was NFC service error is, after a few minutes, I lost my signal, phone turned to No Service, then in Settings -> About Phone, I got an Unknown Baseband.
EDIT
I got No Service since last night up until now.
EDIT Oct. 13, 2015 9:49 AM +08:00 Manila Time
I manage to update my phone from ICS 4.0.4 to JB 4.1.2. But still, my baseband is Unknown and I have no signal.
If it did that before you tried to flash anything...that doesn't sound good. Hard to say without testing it, but kind of sounds like the baseband chip (hardware issue).

I also though of that, hopefully not.
When I first got the phone, my gf sent me our pictures via bluetooth , no issues occured. After a while, I noticed that there are so many photos of the previous owner (around 1000+) and mp3s (around 1000+ also). So I connected the phone via usb to my pc and deleted all those pictures and mp3s inside the My Computer -> SHV-E160S -> Phone (Computer\SHV-E160S\Phone). After doing so, I started to encouter some issues, when enabling the bluetooth, the phone hangs and reboots then the error 'NFC service has stopped' keeps on popping up, until it went Unknown Baseband.
Now, the phone keeps on rebooting similar to the symptoms that it gets when baseband version is unknown.
I'm looking for solutions to fix the unknown baseband and saw the Back up and Restore EFS, I just need to root the device to try this fix. Maybe I'll post an update whether if I manage to solve this problem or not, if it didn't fix the issue then maybe the problem is the baseband chip. what a crap!
This is my reference for the EFS Fix
http://techbeasts.com/2014/07/13/fix-samsung-galaxy-unknown-baseband-version-guide/
Thanks!
Rooting will be easy. Just install TWRP with Odin and use the SuperSU zip from Chainfire. Process should take like 5 minutes once everything is downloaded.

So I need to install TWRP first before rooting the device? Also I'm planning to use a rooted stock firmware which is 4.1.2, I just don't know the difference between UH24 and MH2, I've read that UH24 is already old and it's better to use a MH2 build and what is the Recovery UH24/MH2?
EDIT:
I forgot, I cannot check my current Baseband since it is still unknown.
EDIT: 12:30PM +8:00
I managed to get my Build#, it is MH2, I'm currently looking for a rooted 4.1.2 MH2 download link.
Way faster and easier to use the method I outlined, but either way should work.

Sorry, I'm really a root virgin here. While following your advise, I'm also currently looking at this guide -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924535. I'm done downloading Tegrak for MH2, a small problem I encountered here is I don't have a folder named 'sdcard' in my phone, so I created one and copied the 'Kernel' .zip, also I copied it to usbStorage folder.
I'm about to flash the 'Recovery' .tar to my phone. Hoping a success result
Should be fine. Your phone's internal storage is seen by the OS as /sdcard. Doesn't matter where you put the file as long as you remember where it's at so you can navigate to it through recovery to install.

Finally! I'm done rooting my phone, though I encountered another issues again. My Menu Button and Back Button does not work.
UPDATE: 4:08PM +8:00GMT
I think I found the problem as to why my Menu button and Back button doesn't work. I'v check my Baseband and it is -> E160SKSJMH1 and my Build # is -> JZO54K.E160SKSJMH2. Am I using a wrong FW as supposed to what I should be using? Which build should I install, the MH1 or the MH2?
Also, the Tegrak Kernel I've used is Build 48 for SHV-E160S MH2. I've also tried factory resetting the phone but the issue still exists.
Thanks!
UPDATE: 4:41PM +8:00GMT
Managed to fixed the issue by updating my Touch Firmware. Cool!
