I just got my DNA today and it is pretty smooth other than a few poorly optimized apps. I would like to get the thoughts of some folks that have unlocked and loaded custom Roms and kernels if it was worth the trouble and risk of bricking. Is there really a speed/smoothness difference?
Succinctly, YES.

Yes there is a difference. But honestly the key reason why I rooted was to remap the recent button.

I've rooted all my previous phones to remove bloatware and to tether my tablet on occasion. With this one, Jelly Bean lets me disable most of the bloat and the rest I can hide from the app drawer so that is taken care of and the built in hotspot works just fine. I have no desire to root this one. Maybe in a year or so when somebody develops a safer root procedure and gets S-off I'll be bored and start rooting again.

The only things I need that I don't get from the stock Rom is wireless tether and a long-press 'back button' function that kills the current process.
This phone is so good, as-is, that I have barely felt the desire to root at all. And I must say that coming from the Rezound, that is a huge thing for me.

Yeah, as others have stated, it's pretty phenomenal right out of the box. There are still tweaks I'd like to have, but the main reason i went ahead and rooted was so I could enjoy wi-fi tether. I use it fairly often when I travel.
ROMs and kernels are in development and get better and more interesting almost every day. I can feel the need to flash a new one coming on....
I've never rooted and won't until I this is my secondary phone lol

Bricking happens when you don't pay attention . You can brick anything.. drive down the road with your eyes closed? Bricked car...
Light some candles and put them them on the window seal but forget to move the curtains from dangling in the flame? bricked house....
Try to root a phone and don't read directions before flashing, type wrong command at wrong time? bricked phone...
Sure.. things happen.. your power goes out right as you start to flash a boot loader. kitty walks across your keyboard and types "bricked phone" with his cute little feet..
**** happens, but MOST of the time when bricks happen, its user stupidity.. guys.. my 11 year old daughter rooted her rezound with the paperclip and did her DNA all on her own..
seriously, don't not root your phone because you are afraid of it bricking. This isn't a friggen lottery.. you are 100% in control..
It always amuses me when people say "its not worth the risk".. the risk of what? you being a moron and facerolling your keyboard while watching obamaporn?
Sorry for the rant.. not really.. but whatever. its 3am.. been up doing physics. And not kiddy HS physics, the kind that melts your brain and steals your little swimmers.

Yes it's worth it but I recommend having the IRC channel ready if you have any issues. The first time I unlocked (I had to file an insurance replacement so I did it twice) it took me 3 hours because I had problems. I was in the IRC channel the entire time and since I explained exactly what errors I was getting people were able to help me.
All I can say is yes it's worth it but be careful during the unlock and be ready to ask for help if you need it.

Most times, I would agree with you. However, I have unlocked, rooted and rommed many phones over the years and never had an issue. I followed the directions to a T and it still became a brick. I even asked questions in IRC as I was doing it to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes. As one of the mods on the channel said: "The restore doesn't always take, bricks happen".
I'm sure *most* people will be fine using this method. Unfortuantely for me, I'm one of the minority of folks where it didn't work. Lesson learned. People saying that there isn't a risk if you do everything right are simply wrong.
I'll definitely be waiting until more safe methods come out before attempting to unlock another phone.

This is what I always tell people when they ask should the ROOT and ROM. I can't tell you weather you should or shouldn't. You need to make that choice yourself and know that no one is responsible for what you do to your phone.
But if you decided to ROOT and ROM your phone the first thing on your to do list is.....READ. Read everything. Read how to ROOT and how to ROM. Read about the tools and programs you are going to use. Watch youtube videos and tutorials. And when you're done with that......RE-READ and RE-WATCH all of it!
I can't stress how important it is that you understand what you are doing. If you don't get what you're doing you will end up on the forums begging for help to fix it.
I read up on Rooting and Roms for a few weeks before I tried to do it myself. I also asked questions in a respectful manner not expecting an answer RIGHT THEN. I also hit the THANKS button, that goes a long way!
So in a nutshell....EDUCATE yourself and have respect for the community when you ask questions.
Alex
a thousand points to mortem very true and valid advice. no truer advice could be spoken about android mods and roms. My personal favorite is when people try to use international roms on things like the skyrocket.
Once you get the itch, you will do it eventually
But good advice above! And while you are researching, a flash counter workaround root method will likely be found.

I would wait until you are past 30 days and know you are going to keep the phone or you have no exchanges. after that you will have to go to warranty support so you can flash back to stock. No need to make additonal work before 30 days.
Who know there may even be a super 1 click root by then?
Halfcab was to root our phone - a simple process according to them. in 3 days they have managed to brick one of our phone and then not properly root the second. Now it is working very poorly. now they have blocked our emails and will not respond to us. According to them a simple download is needed so why are they not responding. Avoid as you probably will not get what you pay for.

I would let the unlimited.io crew or con247 toy around with mine remotely; such has been done during the initial release of the JuopunutBear S-off method. But only because I have observed them to be legitimate developers seeking to better user experiences and knowledge for knowledge's sake. Definitely not some random XDA reader with a website storefront and access to other people's ROMs and tools.
Edit: read the post below this one. Then read it again; it pretty much sums up the situation.
I a firm believer that if you can't root your own device, you should be stock... Hell I'm even against the one click root utilizes for inexperienced users.. part of having root is the understanding that you are now tech support..the only way your going to learn is to do it the hard way. Not by plugging in and clicking root... Ever notice on any forum for a phone with a one click, there's a ton of "help I'm bricked" threads... Funny thing is you never see these before one click is available...kinda hard to become tech support if you have zero knowledge of what a Linux OS is and how to move around with terminal..
Basically I almost don't feel bad for the scam, shoulda took the time to learn what's involved with being rooted...sorry

Honestly it's not as horrifying as some may think. It's quite simple. Just read the guides and make sure you have everything you need at your fingertips. It would be good for you to learn since you will be flashing roms and such. It's almost like shaking hands and saying hello to your phone. (lol)

I do promis you tho in the end any thing you learn will be useful in the future.. you'll always wanna flash a new Rom, or kernel, or even a new mod for sense 4.x you like.. but, YOU will wanna be the one to do it not send it in again, or something silly like that.. my gtalk [email protected]. But my advice is always read, search and read some more.. and if you still can't find what your looking for ask a questio. Good luck bro.

I was unsuccessful with getting S-Off on my phone (about 120-ish attempts) so I just use an app called HTC dumlock. It works by copying my recovery to my boot partition and booting to that. It allows me to flash kernels as if I had S-Off. The only disadvantage is that it's an app and does require a working ROM so a borked flash means I have to fall back to fastboot.

First, for them to root your phone remotely you'd have to give them remote access to your pc. No way I'd trust these clowns with that.
Second, rooting the phone is easy, all you really need to do is get your unlock code from HTC and follow the instructions here on XDA. It's really easy and there are a lot of people here who will help if you need it. The only really tricky thing is s-off, and they can't help you with that remotely since it requires access to your phone.
Now, if you're new to rooting you probably shouldn't go s-off just yet anyway, but that's another topic altogether. Regardless, if these guys root your phone you'll be s-on. The extra steps for s-on flashing aren't difficult, but unless you want to pay them to flash every rom you try you need to learn how to do it yourself. I don't know about everyone else, but I go through phases where I'll change roms several times a week or even daily just to try stuff out.
Third, these halfcab guys are selling other people's roms. Under terms of open source that isn't illegal, but that doesn't make it right. You can download them for free and if anyone deserves money for a rom its the dev who worked on it. They'll take donations! (I think I even saw where halfcab was selling unlock codes. HTC would probably take issue with that.)
Fourth, they're selling WiFi tether. Again, it's free to download. Most ROMS come with it anyway.
So short answer to the OP is no, it isn't legit. It's a ripoff and could leave you with major headaches if you don't learn how to do this stuff yourself anyway. It certainly won't be as convenient as it may sound.

Please don't support someone who sells someone else's work as their own. There may be no law against it, but that doesn't make it right.
And no, rooting / s-offing your phone isn't easy the first time, but you can do it if you read and then ask questions like everyone else has said.

Don't pay people to do it, you'll be calling them weekly on how to fix stuff. You need to know how to look at an issue solve it and perform the steps necessary to keeping the device going smoothly. If you don't learn the terminology and what each thing does you will be lost forever. I did it for my brother and I get calls all them time How do i do this? its terrible. If your not willing to put some time into it then like they said buy an Iphone. I understand not wanting to mess it up. Only one case that I have read of a truly messed up phone (couldn't make calls) but it was resolved and was never directly tied to the unlocking process. I understand not wanting to mess it up. Only one case that I have read of a truly messed up phone (couldn't make calls) but it was resolved and was never directly tied to the unlocking process. yes, true story. the instructions are VERY straight forward, very step-by-step. You CANNOT mess up your phone. If you're unsure of any step or instruction, just re-read the process or rewind the youtube video.
I have to say when it comes to unlocking the one button unroot methods have caused more issues than benefits. I only say that because it made it so easy for people to really wreck their phones once they were unlocked/rooted and not really understanding the risks and what it took to get to that point.
That said of course it took me many, many times of reading through the posts, asking questions and getting help along the way. But in the end I was grateful to have know what I was doing, the risks of wrecking my $700 phone and also the true ease of restoring to stock and starting over, again and again and again until I got it right.
Adam's guide is very helpful and watching his video (although it has changed rapidly for the better) which is likely well out of step with the new method still gives you an appreciation of what it took for these devs to put forth our method of defeating the Big Red. Go for it, its not so bad.
Cant you use the exynos exploit? The chainfire exynosabuse app roots. And it help close an exploit. Win win.

It only gives you root, it doesn't unlock the bootloader.

well the droid DNA and the One S and the One XL just got s-off!! also i was just on twitter and jcase said that it will work on the evo 4g LTE also it it looks mad easy! he said if we want it they will support it :good: no sdcard needed either! check it out its called #facepalm S-OFF! for all modern HTC phones
this is what jcase said he needs...-jcase- "I need an update.zip, link to a supercid procedure, and a s-on user with supercid and root".. i have no clue what that is but im sure someone here can help get what he needs to get this goin
Why the hell do you want to waste an exploit on this device if we already have one? It's not a problem also we dont have a superCID procedure. You're sitting here wanting S-off on a device that's already been hacked not only that, you have no idea what most of this **** even is. How can you expect to be of any use when debugging something when you don't know what SuperCID is. This is a useless thread and completely unecessary. We already have an s-off exploit, lets not waste it until a future update we can't get past?

On second thought, you're not worth this. Hope you enjoy a wasted exploit.
I miss the gold card days
The exploit we have now is "mad easy"..guess I don't see why we'd need another.

I just tried this one. It seems to work, although i was s-off by LP. I am still s-off. I just run it over the top right?

It's not a matter of him being mad, it's a matter of you starting an unwarranted thread about an exploit that isn't necessary for our device.
While jcase's method could possibly be adapted to our device, it would be unnecessary for jcase to dedicate time to a device with an existing, and fairly simple s-off method, when he could be dedicating time to devices that have nothing currently.
Feel free to ask if I'm mad, because I'm not. The only people that should be mad, were the ones that ever followed your advice, now that it is apparent that you don't understand the device you hold in your hand.

It's refreshing to see that you just prove my perception of you as an individual with your quick resort to the standard Internet tough guy and 'you wouldn't say that in real life' antics. Be certain, that I would, as I am no different regardless of my settings.
You made a senseless thread, because you wanted thanks or something. Then when it's brought to attention, you get all gangster as though anyone cares.
Your profile says that android saves and keeps you out of trouble... How about just growing up, taking responsibility for actions, and being an adult. Your ghetto, tough guy act makes you seem very unintelligent and uneducated.
I'll be exiting this thread now, as it has nothing more to offer besides aggravation due to your feeble minded ways.
