Agreed. The Casual method is really really easy.
Who knows... Maybe now that the cat is out of the bag our African Canadian Sock Monkey friend will throw us a bootloader anyway. Just to reduce the risk factor.
I hate to beat a dead horse, but the current method is pretty easy and even comes with a step by step video. If you don't feel comfortable doing it you could pay a local tech to do it for you.

I understand not wanting to mess it up. Only one case that I have read of a truly messed up phone (couldn't make calls) but it was resolved and was never directly tied to the unlocking process. Area read read and then execute. If you pay attention it'll be fine . don't let any issues people are having scare you. If you pay attention it'll work out great.

yes, true story. the instructions are VERY straight forward, very step-by-step. You CANNOT mess up your phone. If you're unsure of any step or instruction, just re-read the process or rewind the youtube video.
I have to say when it comes to unlocking the one button unroot methods have caused more issues than benefits. I only say that because it made it so easy for people to really wreck their phones once they were unlocked/rooted and not really understanding the risks and what it took to get to that point.
That said of course it took me many, many times of reading through the posts, asking questions and getting help along the way. But in the end I was grateful to have know what I was doing, the risks of wrecking my $700 phone and also the true ease of restoring to stock and starting over, again and again and again until I got it right.
Adam's guide is very helpful and watching his video (although it has changed rapidly for the better) which is likely well out of step with the new method still gives you an appreciation of what it took for these devs to put forth our method of defeating the Big Red. Go for it, its not so bad.

Hey all...I'm VERY new to all of this rooting stuff...still reading about it and I can't seem to wrap my head around it....Not sure if I'd be crossing a line by asking this, but here it goes....are there people on here that would actually root a phone for someone if they (ie..me) are to stupid to do so?
Of course there would be compensation involved.
Thanks for any info!!!
If you are new to the point that you are not comfortable following the steps needed to root your phone then I would say that you should not be worrying about rooting your phone at this point.
Why do I say this? It is because you will want to flash a myriad of Roms after your phone is rooted, which I guarantee will cause issues that you will not be able to figure out on your own.
You also need to ask yourself what it is that you hope to gain from rooting your phone. The stock Thunderbolt has bloat no doubt, but it is generally compatible with apps and is about to receive the Gingerbread OTA (non-root users theorize) fairly soon.
What do you want that can only be accomplished by rooting your phone at this point? If you cannot answer that question, then I hope you will take my advice and do some reading on this site, and one or two other sites, until you are ready to root your phone without paying someone to do it for you.
One other thing. Please do not create posts asking about the proverbial 'Best Rom'. There is no such thing.
Just my .02 cents!
I appreciate the info....Thanks!!!

I've rooted several devices for friends that have no intention of using clockworkmod. They simply want the advantages of root and to run a new ROM like CM7. I'd be happy to do it for money, and I don't think the end user of a rooted devices needs to know jack about it rooting it to enjoy the benefits. In short, I'm happy to root a device for someone as long as I know they aren't going to get in there and brick the thing somehow and come to me to fix it like it's my problem. Most people are decent enough to do that.
if you look online(or in your local yellow pages), you can find shops locally that will fix, root, etc your cell phone.
just here in San Diego there's about a dozen places that offer these services.
although i will tell you... the first time you figure out you have a problem with your carb and it's bad enough that you can't drive your car... then a "friend" tells you, just bring the carb over here & we'll fix it for you... then you're just standing there looking at the carb and thinking "uhhh..."
now that's rooting a phone x 10 difficultly.
I'll do it for free, teach you how i did it, and give you the basic knowledge of how not to brick. Where are you located?

I didn't have anybody to guide me when i first started and i know how frustrating it can be. And you never know, he may be the next great developer with the right start. I have been the "tech support" for my entire family who I converted to android. It would be nice to teach someone who will want to learn as opposed to my family who just says here you do it...
And you are right on the money when you say ppl who use Th3orys roms are nice and helpful. I have learned a great deal from that community.
I am not a dev, just someone who knows how to implement the awesome features created by the community here at XDA.

Dang if I was near my laptop which my dad has webx on I would do it for you. I have rooted a bunch of phones for friends and family and I find it especially fun teaching them what root, roms, etc. can help them achieve. Today I rooted my friends sensation so he would have the sensation xe (beats audio) options and speed. If you feel that your stock phone seems slow rooting, overclocking and debloating or changing the ROM can definitely help you!

I would let the unlimited.io crew or con247 toy around with mine remotely; such has been done during the initial release of the JuopunutBear S-off method. But only because I have observed them to be legitimate developers seeking to better user experiences and knowledge for knowledge's sake. Definitely not some random XDA reader with a website storefront and access to other people's ROMs and tools.
Edit: read the post below this one. Then read it again; it pretty much sums up the situation.
I a firm believer that if you can't root your own device, you should be stock... Hell I'm even against the one click root utilizes for inexperienced users.. part of having root is the understanding that you are now tech support..the only way your going to learn is to do it the hard way. Not by plugging in and clicking root... Ever notice on any forum for a phone with a one click, there's a ton of "help I'm bricked" threads... Funny thing is you never see these before one click is available...kinda hard to become tech support if you have zero knowledge of what a Linux OS is and how to move around with terminal..
Basically I almost don't feel bad for the scam, shoulda took the time to learn what's involved with being rooted...sorry

Honestly it's not as horrifying as some may think. It's quite simple. Just read the guides and make sure you have everything you need at your fingertips. It would be good for you to learn since you will be flashing roms and such. It's almost like shaking hands and saying hello to your phone. (lol)

I do promis you tho in the end any thing you learn will be useful in the future.. you'll always wanna flash a new Rom, or kernel, or even a new mod for sense 4.x you like.. but, YOU will wanna be the one to do it not send it in again, or something silly like that.. my gtalk [email protected]. But my advice is always read, search and read some more.. and if you still can't find what your looking for ask a questio. Good luck bro.

I was unsuccessful with getting S-Off on my phone (about 120-ish attempts) so I just use an app called HTC dumlock. It works by copying my recovery to my boot partition and booting to that. It allows me to flash kernels as if I had S-Off. The only disadvantage is that it's an app and does require a working ROM so a borked flash means I have to fall back to fastboot.

First, for them to root your phone remotely you'd have to give them remote access to your pc. No way I'd trust these clowns with that.
Second, rooting the phone is easy, all you really need to do is get your unlock code from HTC and follow the instructions here on XDA. It's really easy and there are a lot of people here who will help if you need it. The only really tricky thing is s-off, and they can't help you with that remotely since it requires access to your phone.
Now, if you're new to rooting you probably shouldn't go s-off just yet anyway, but that's another topic altogether. Regardless, if these guys root your phone you'll be s-on. The extra steps for s-on flashing aren't difficult, but unless you want to pay them to flash every rom you try you need to learn how to do it yourself. I don't know about everyone else, but I go through phases where I'll change roms several times a week or even daily just to try stuff out.
Third, these halfcab guys are selling other people's roms. Under terms of open source that isn't illegal, but that doesn't make it right. You can download them for free and if anyone deserves money for a rom its the dev who worked on it. They'll take donations! (I think I even saw where halfcab was selling unlock codes. HTC would probably take issue with that.)
Fourth, they're selling WiFi tether. Again, it's free to download. Most ROMS come with it anyway.
So short answer to the OP is no, it isn't legit. It's a ripoff and could leave you with major headaches if you don't learn how to do this stuff yourself anyway. It certainly won't be as convenient as it may sound.

Please don't support someone who sells someone else's work as their own. There may be no law against it, but that doesn't make it right.
And no, rooting / s-offing your phone isn't easy the first time, but you can do it if you read and then ask questions like everyone else has said.

Don't pay people to do it, you'll be calling them weekly on how to fix stuff. You need to know how to look at an issue solve it and perform the steps necessary to keeping the device going smoothly. If you don't learn the terminology and what each thing does you will be lost forever. I did it for my brother and I get calls all them time How do i do this? its terrible. If your not willing to put some time into it then like they said buy an Iphone. Once you learn though its exciting and fun and its a community everyone here wants more people to learn it makes the platform great.
I just got my DNA today and it is pretty smooth other than a few poorly optimized apps. I would like to get the thoughts of some folks that have unlocked and loaded custom Roms and kernels if it was worth the trouble and risk of bricking. Is there really a speed/smoothness difference?
Succinctly, YES.

I've rooted all my previous phones to remove bloatware and to tether my tablet on occasion. With this one, Jelly Bean lets me disable most of the bloat and the rest I can hide from the app drawer so that is taken care of and the built in hotspot works just fine. I have no desire to root this one. Maybe in a year or so when somebody develops a safer root procedure and gets S-off I'll be bored and start rooting again.

Try to root a phone and don't read directions before flashing, type wrong command at wrong time? bricked phone...
Sure.. things happen.. your power goes out right as you start to flash a boot loader. kitty walks across your keyboard and types "bricked phone" with his cute little feet..
**** happens, but MOST of the time when bricks happen, its user stupidity.. guys.. my 11 year old daughter rooted her rezound with the paperclip and did her DNA all on her own..
seriously, don't not root your phone because you are afraid of it bricking. This isn't a friggen lottery.. you are 100% in control..

I was in the IRC channel the entire time and since I explained exactly what errors I was getting people were able to help me.
All I can say is yes it's worth it but be careful during the unlock and be ready to ask for help if you need it.

Bricking happens when you don't pay attention . You can brick anything.. drive down the road with your eyes closed? Bricked car...
Light some candles and put them them on the window seal but forget to move the curtains from dangling in the flame? bricked house....
It always amuses me when people say "its not worth the risk".. the risk of what? you being a moron and facerolling your keyboard while watching obamaporn?
Sorry for the rant.. not really.. but whatever. its 3am.. been up doing physics. And not kiddy HS physics, the kind that melts your brain and steals your little swimmers.

I root for the sheer fun of it, and I'm learning how to build custom ROMs.

Most times, I would agree with you. However, I have unlocked, rooted and rommed many phones over the years and never had an issue. I followed the directions to a T and it still became a brick. I even asked questions in IRC as I was doing it to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes. As one of the mods on the channel said: "The restore doesn't always take, bricks happen".
I'm sure *most* people will be fine using this method. Unfortuantely for me, I'm one of the minority of folks where it didn't work. Lesson learned. People saying that there isn't a risk if you do everything right are simply wrong.
I'll definitely be waiting until more safe methods come out before attempting to unlock another phone.

Si you've bricked two phones and made Verizon swap them out? I'd suggest you stay stock.

They are working on it. Sounds like they have it figured out and are just cleaning up the process a little bit.

People screwing their phones up, by not reading thoroughly and asking questions if they dont understand before flashing ****, and then getting VZW to exchange them is why the rest of us who have real problems that aren't caused by our tinkering end up getting screwed.
If you brick your phone flashing, or just generally screwing around with it, man up and figure out a way to fix it or get a new phine without comitting fraud.

Actually, if you do something to your phone that causes it to stop working and submit a warranty replacement request, it is fraud. There is a very, very slim chance to anything to your phone that bricks it if you leave it stock, and the only time you run that risk is during an OTA update really. To do it TWICE says the OP was doing something they didn't understand and caused a problem themselves. It's exactly the reason VZW and other carriers are locking bootloaders and making it harder to get them unlocked, because people keep damaging them themselves and submitting a warranty return.
Dude you work for verizon? If thats the case then the millions of people that bricked their phones are what u described in the post???? Get real man. we are with you not against you so stop seriously.

First off check the tude. Imnuts and many others are the reason we have root and abilities to do things on our phones. Show a little respect, please.
And really if someone tries to root it, it is a violation of the agreement one agrees. It voids the warranty and TOS agreement. So it is fraud to return it for that reason. And finally if one tries it once and bricks mistakes happen, But twice, one should evaluate if they should be tinkering with the phones this way.
With that said I have the 4.1.2 bone stock Note 2. Check my signature for the link I just used Casual and it rooted and unlocked in 4 mins.
I respect everyone here to the fullest. But please dont act like your the hack police, you were a newb once too and Uh he was the one cursing in his post. No one is being a hypocrite. I have never bricked my phone because I busted my ass reading and asking questions if I couldn't find any answers to my questions when I was a newb. I have always recieved help when I needed it and even when I didnt, the problem is this kid has bricked 2 phones by doing **** he clearly doesnt understand instead of asking questions first.
He is the reason we are all getting screwed with replacement phones and prices, and yes it is insurance fraud. The contract covers certain things but bootloader unlocking and bricking is not one, you can root and you'll still be covered but there is very little you can do to kill a phone with just root.
I do like that youre trying to defend your point but there is no need for name calling in this, if you want to have a discussion have one without calling people hypocrites or acting rude in your follow up. Also there is a very fine line between newb and fraudster which the OP crossed.
Also if you have been here long I dont know how you jave missed all the threads about people committing fraud just like this kid, thats why the majority of the community have such short patience, or in some cases tempers, with the fraudsters.

However the second part was for you because your behaviour here will get this thread closed. Be very careful what you say around here. And especially be careful to those you are talking to my friend.
