Hi
I originally posted this request under 'Galaxy S II Themes and Apps' at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089696 on 21st May but after 268 views there hasn't been a single reply- I guess that I posted in the wrong section. I have also searched many times for a solution using various terms but not found a description of how to do this successfully. I have seen this described for the original Galaxy and variations but have not been able to implement these on the SGS2 or seen any guidelines for the SGS2 or 2.3.3 specifically.
I use the calendar on my phone a lot, with in fact 5 Google calendars in use and on view at the same time across 3 different Google accounts. Unfortunately the SGS2 TouchWiz calendar is sadly deficient with regard to the AOSP calendar as I used with Cyanogenmod 6.1 on my Hero previously and I would very much like to swap it out for the AOSP or Cyanogenmod calendar. Can anyone advise on how to do this? Many thanks in advance for any assistance!
Some of the disadvantages of Samsung Calendar with regard to AOSP calendar:
Black background makes many appointments difficult to see as calendar colours are optimised for white background as with Google calendar web interface and AOSP calendar app. There does not appear to be any support for a theme or colour option setting.
All-day events are shown right at the top of the page and so are easily missed on Samsung Calendar but kept in view on with AOSP. See attached 'day view' screenshot with no all-day events visible despite week and month view showing 3 all day events that day.
All-day events lasting more than one day are shown separately for each day in most views with Samsung calendar and so it is not easy to see that they span several days. In week and month view, they are often reduced to tiny squares which have no label and can be really hard to see- see attached screenshot- can you see that there are 3 all day events on Saturday 21st but only 2 on the other days in the purple calendar? AOSP calendar would show them as continuous events spanning several days.
No hyperlink support: AOSP calendar allows you to click through on a phone number mentioned in an appointment to dial it, or the location described to do a maps search, the Samsung Calendar does not permit this.
Screenshots taken with this app (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.geeksoft.screenshot&feature=search_result) which decided to shift all of the colours here for some reason although I don't think it significant here- it still illustrates the above points adequately.

I have/had the stock calendar working on VillainROM, albeit with a few graphics quirks. If you can cope with that, I'll put it into VRTweaks for VillainROM 1.4 if you want
Stock email available too
EDIT: It's up in VR1.4. I need to work on the UI glitches though.
Thanks. What sort of graphics quirks? Is VRTweaks part of your ROM or an optional add-on?

It's an installable addon to the ROM.
The graphics quirk is basically a thin blue bar across the top of the screen and a few incorrect icons in email app.
I'm going to try fix them today, as it can't be too hard
(famous last words )
Great! I can likely live with a small blue bar at the top of the screen and I don't use the Email app, only the Gmail one. Where do/will I find this package and what else does it change please?
Thanks

If you have installed VillainROM 1.4 (ROM will appear like stock, but with better battery life etc), then you just install the VRTweaks app (google it or look here on XDA ), then scroll in the list for Vanilla Calendar
Once you've done that, you should be sorted.
Oh, and I think I found the UI glitch So it might be gone before you are even started
Thanks, so I presume that I would have to do a complete wipe and install your ROM as described here before I could install the tweaks? The only link I have found for the tweaks is to a previous version (v1.3.1- 29 May) where you say
It is NOT ready for mainstream use, so consider it Alpha.

I know that this will sound really boring, but I really do depend on my calendars. What is the current state of these tweaks and have you written anywhere what the current versions of your ROM and tweaks package change compared to stock?

The ROM, compared to stock, should be fine. If you check the ROM thread, that should explain how the ROM differs to stock (it's quite similar)
VRTweaks itself is "alpha", but it's in use by tens of thousands of people now.
If you're after calendar, I'm not aware of any issues, and am trying to get rid of the blue bar, which is just a bit annoying.
UI glitches removed from VR1.4 Vanilla calendar option.
Thanks for all of your trouble, advice and hard work. I am afraid that I am going to pass here however. Excepting the hassle of a backup/wipe/flash/restore, I presume that what changes listed are listed for your ROM are cumulative (i.e. changes in earlier versions are carried over to later versions) and there are a number here that I would prefer to avoid. The removal of the battery limits on the video player and camera would be worthwhile but I guess I am quite conservative and I would prefer to avoid changes made simply for their own sake, such as the CRT screen shut-down animation and alteration to the battery charge status icon. I have used several of your Hero ROMs in the past and whilst changes for their own sake are great for those that want them, I am afraid that I have a strong preference for isolated changes that affect only their specific function and leave the rest untouched.
Thanks

Umm.. None of those changes you mentioned are in the ROM...
The ROM itself is same as stock, but you choose what you want from VRTweaks...
Not sure if you are misunderstanding. You pick the tweak you want from the list, and it installs.
Either way, up to you. But I don't use anything like all the tweaks available
Check this one
I am always using the calendar imported from Insanity ROM v8 for SGS. I'm not sure if it will help you but you can give it a try. It's totally white so you can see everything well. Good luck!
Thanks ghiri but there are some problems here:
I have not heard of this ROM and it would be nice to see a screenshot of what it looked like.
You can't replace the system calendar with an apk installed from the memory card in the normal way. If I could do this then I would have just installed the AOSP calendar apk from the Nexus S ROM, that's why I was requesting guidance at the beginning of this thread.
As a short/medium-term fix I have installed CalenGoo. It's not as good as the AOSP calendar but it does work. I am afraid that I find the steps described for installing VillainROM somewhat daunting, especially for a ROM that is apparently almost stock and when we are apparently expecting an official upgrade to 2.3.4 'any time now'.

if you delete the samsung calender then you can install the aosp calender (I installed from the nexus s) it installs just like a normal apk into data/app
@ogdobber Thanks. That's what I previously thought that I could do BUT:
Google apps package (e.g. as made available here) contains
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
On my phone '/system/app' contains the following files with 'calendar' in the name:
CalendarProvider.apk
CalendarProvider.odex
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
TouchWizCalendar.apk
TouchWizCalendar.odex
TwCalendarAppWidget.apk
TwCalendarAppWidget.odex
Where do I begin?

Using rootexplorer and adb i did the following
with rootexplorer i browsed to /system/app/ and renamed TouchwizCalender.apk to TouchwizCalender.apk.bak
then i did
Code:
adb push Calendar.apk /system/app/
and it worked just fine. or atleast its working fine so far
of course you can just move the calendar.apk with rootexplorer.
or if you dont have rootexplorer you can do it all with adb as well.
I used the Calendar.apk provided by Ghiri in this post

TouchWizCalendar.apk delete

delete them or rename to .bak (eg TwCalendarAppWidget.apk.bak)
ok i have CalendarProvider.apk (deodexed) and GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk all touchwiz deleted (the other 2/4) also deleted days.apk
then just installed the NS calendar like a normal apk
Thanks for this. Using adb I seem to be stuck with the default.prop error described here and here. Any ideas?
I Rooted using the following procedure after each upgrade, do I need to reinstall the XWKDD_insecure kernel temporarily in order to change the calendar?
Thanks
Make sure your device is in USB debugging mode: Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging
Reboot your device into download mode: Turn the device off, then power it on again by pressing and holding VolumeDown + Home + Power simultaneously. You will know when you are in download mode, it is really obvious
Start ODIN
Connect the device to your computer using USB
Wait a few seconds, the ODIN screen should show you that a device is now connected
Make sure that in ODIN NOTHING is checked, except the "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset Time" checkboxes. Press the "PDA" button, and select the "XWKDD_insecure.tar" file.
Press "Start". ODIN you should now be flashing the kernel, and the device should reboot.
Wait until the device is rebooted, and while still being connected over USB, start SuperOneClick, and press ROOT.
Assuming this is successful you can then shutdown the phone and go to download mode as above
Now you can flash the Stock kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle just like how we flashed the insecure kernel above.
Reboot the device
Done !
Pulser, thanks for the work on this. Would it be possible to post just the calendar.apk with the ui issues fixed? I am switching between roms fairly regularly and not all allow me to use vr tweaks.
Thanks
Hello people.... i have a question about this mod.... i have tried to extract the pulsarg2 vanilla calendar from villaintweaks to put these in hdblog rom from leo75, but i have this situation:
The pulsar2g vanilla apk are only 2 files, calendar.apk and calendarprovider.apk.
Replacing only calendar.apk in Leo rom make the calendar start, but when i press option key to enter in calendar setting the program crashes. Also i notice the widget "agenda" from Samsung still present.
Replacing calendarprovider.apk with pulsarg2 apk removes the "agenda" widget but makes the calendar crash immediately and doesn't start anymore.
How i can solve this trouble? I need aosp calendar, please!

Unhappy with Samsung's stock ICS version, I moved on to a CyanogenMod9 nightly build for my SGS2 - an admittedly risky thing to do on April 1st - which proves fantastically stable and fast.
However, when I installed the Facebook app (painstakingly: I'm in China), I found that the option to sync and merge contacts is gone. From the app, but also from the Accounts and Sync option in Android's settings. It still says "Facebook" under the accounts that I can add, but nothing happens when tapped.
I wiped and re-installed everything, but to no avail. The setting is no longer there and I cannot sync my Facebook contact details with my existing contact list.
Any ideas what I can do about this?
Having the same issue, with the Galaxy S2 on a nightly 9
Facebook must update their API.

so it's a matter of waiting? Is this a new thing in Android 4.04 or does it relate to cm9?
Stumbled here after noticing the same thing on my Photon with Jokersax CM9 Kang (Android 4.0.4) installed. As its my first Photon custom ROM I can't say its a CM9 thing or a 4.0.4 thing.
It does work ok on my Epic 4G Touch with Samsung FC24 leak which is 4.0.3 and NOT CM9.
I'm on 4.0.4 (CM9) and it is not working for me either. The only workaround I know of is using the app "HaxSync," which syncs the contacts for you.

This option was removed from android AOSP by default due to Google not agreeing with FB privacy policy. The only way is to use an app to do it. It is not a Samsung ICS issue it is an Android AOSP thing.
Not sure if that is true since it is still working on AOKP's last buid (4.0.4)

See AOKP is not pure AOSP.
Here is a link that began talking about this way back on 2.3.3

yeah - it's a Facebook v Google thing, not a software fault.
Friendcaster fixes it for you.
Is there any more info on this issue? Or is it never going to be resolved due to Google / Facebook differences. Find it amusing that Google have problems with Facebook's privacy given ether recent changes Google have made
Ah
Had the same problem. Uninstall and reinstall fixed it. It doesn't care for restores from backups evidently.

Been having similar problems on Jellybean for HTC DESIRE HD. Thanks for the tip. Friendcaster, indeed, does fix the problem and is quite a nice FB app in its own right!
This one works fine on ICS and JB. You can choose pic sizes up to 720x720.
does this Friendcaster application syncs numbers ? or just photos ?
You can always use a modified ContactsProvider.apk to allow facebook sync.

That's normal when You don't use stock based ROM.
Just download app called SYNC.ME from market or use app "contactive".
Hi all,
I am pretty sure that in ICS when a calendar event had a registered location, you could click on the location triggering the maps app to show you where it is on the map. I've noticed that in Jelly Bean this link was disappeared. The location is shown under the title of the event but you can't click to view it on the map. Is this happening to your phones too?
Samsung Galaxy Nexus, stock OTA 4.1.1, UK.
Thanks

I'm on Nexus 7 by Asus, it came with Stock Android 4.1 Jellybean and has been upgraded a couple times now to OTA 4.1.1
As far as ICS goes, I can't comment, I own a Galaxy Note which is heavily modded by Touchwiz.
But Nexus 7, loving it so far. Love the voice assistant, cause it works.
I had the same concern as above, the calendar and map seems to be missing the integration between, Maps and latitude. I would love to be able to specify "Work" or "Home" or things off "My Places" when making Calendar entries( i.e. Meeting at 1:00 pm at work with <Contact>. This would really help especially with Google Now, where it can see where your next appointment is at so it can route you the right way. It would be even better if you can dictate this and it will integrate with Gmail to send out invites if you are the organizer. Has anybody figured out the keywords to have Jelly Bean Voice Search to make calendar entries? I can only get it to make Alarms.
I just noticed this also since upgrading my Galaxy Nexus to Jelly Bean. Not happy about that.
Clearly a bug here.
I reset my device and set up my accounts and the links were there and working. After a reboot it dissapears. Hope this gets fixed quickly, it's annoying.

I'm having the same issue. Updated my Galaxy Nexus to 4.1.1 (rooted, getting updates from directly from Google).
I thought I must have been going mad. I've reset / wiped the phone a couple of times now, slowly reinstalling one app at a time, and then suddenly BOOM - the location links are gone.
Good to see now that I am not the only one.
Update:
The Android bug register has some discussion on this. Google android issues 34759 and you'll find the link (I'm a noob on XDA and it won't let me post links)
I just flashed Neo's latest rage rom this morning. I was just going though doing my normal reconfigure to get it back up and running when i noticed the calender wasn't working correctly (for me of course). Every time i go to the app itself to add ones to sync it FCs. Under sync settings it shows com.android.calendar. So that's what brings me to the ideal that here is something wrong with it. I'm using his inverted version haven't tried looking for the regular calender yet.

Hi,
The XDA forum has always my resource for problem solving, but being fully stuck after an upgrade to the Resurrection Remix JB 3.1.3, I'd like to take the opportunity to post, I think my 1st thread. I hope that I am posting this at the right spot, but if not, my appologies.
So, I upgraded my SGS2 from the "old" DLev Rom, 2.3.5 based to the RR 3.1.3, and I have a number of issues. For the upgrade I used exactly the steps prescribed on the RR page, and I hope that these apply to my situation, DLev 2.3.5 to RR 4.2.1.
1. After doing a Titanium Backup restore, I get each time after booting a "exchange service lost" error. The Wifi icon looks like split in 2, and I get the message that access to email is lost. This is weird, as I am not at all using an exchange server, only yahoo and 4 IMAP accounts. As I found out I can however recover from this error by explicitly opening my K-9 email.
2. As I found the RR launcher a bit poor, I started using my LauncherPro. However, in configuring, and more in particular in adding shortcuts to the screen, and scrolling to select an app, the S2 locks up, and a reboot is the only way to bring it back to life. Is it a compatibility issue, or is it something else?
3. And thirdly, I am unable to synchronize with my gmail account. I always get the message that the Google sync is having problems, but please try again later.
Any advice is greatly appreciated, and I'll be looking forward to getting reactions.
