[Q] NFC without contrac

I will have a S. Korean NFC-chip based phone, will NFC work in UK as I won't use any contract.
NFC will work, sure.
The question is what do you want out to do? All the NFC apps in the market will work, same as a Nexus S, if that's what you're asking.

As Oyster card, be able to set up my VISA/Mastercard and pay for example at M&S. From what I get it reading latest news, you need to have a contract like with Orange and Orange have contract with M&S/VISA... to be able to pay. And 15USD is maximum.
How I get it, it wont work without contract to be able to use NFC to pay.

NONE of that will work. Orange's system requires that you have their SIM card which has the NFC built in on that as well as specific phones that has the required application to make mobile payments.
As for Oyster... Well, it's Oyster. You can use the card and that's powered with RFID. At the moment no plans have been announced for mobile NFC payments there.

Traveling Advice

Hey Everyone,
I'm going to France/UK for a month in about 3 weeks
But I would still like to get in contact with my family here in the states. I was wondering if anyone knew the best way to get service while outside of the country.
Would it be cheaper to get a sim card there and plop it into my phone or call ATT and tell them I'm traveling and that I need service there.
Lastly, if I go the sim card route, do I need to do anything to be able to use the card or do I drop it in and it works?
Thanks again!
Firstly, congratulations and I hope you have an amazing time. Last summer I went to Greece, Italy, and France so what I did was turn off my data (just the toggle in settings) and used the wifi over there for apps that let you call or text others who have the same app. At&t also has a messaging plan where you get 100 texts for like ten dollars or so I think but you can't double up -_- for some reason. Don't buy any At&t overseas data plans, they will charge you an arm and a leg.
But any ways, if you know you are going to populated parts of the country where you'll get wifi, then you should be good with that to talk to friends/family here for a really good portion of the day. (many cafes and such offer free wifi but hotels, you'll have to pay but it's super minimal- equivalent to about three dollars on average for your stay there)
Again, wishing you the best of luck.
3 possible options outside of using ATT
first call att and see if they unlock your phone for you - if not use cellularunlock (~$25) to get the unlock code, once overseas, buy a local sim and use that
if wifi is available use that - first sign up for google voice then install grooveIP and log in with your google voice account - you can not make wifi based phone calls (caveat - not sure if groove ip enabled yet in Uk or france)
use Skype - sign up for thier very cheap monthly subscriptions, and use that when in wifi range

Thanks for the replies guys!
I think from the look of things I'll get my phone unlocked and just get a sim card there.
I'm going to hope that there is a ton of free wi fi so I can call the family back home but I also need service to keep in contact in towns while I'm there.
Also, will unlocking the phone affect anything? Because I'm currently rooted and running TheUnofficial.
Nope. Unlocking a phone lets you use carriers overseas. Has nothing to do with os.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
-iOS = inspiring Outdated Software
Hey there,
Nowadays lots of things there, you can contact your family very easy and free services. There's lots of application on the phone, you can contact through Skype, WhatsApp, IMO and there is lots of apps are available. You can easily video call with these apps. You only need a good internet connection which you can easily find in the UK. Happy journey
Thanks!

NFC Support

How could i know if the Galaxy S III that is being sold in my country is NFC Enabled or not? I went to a few service providers and the sales people and the TECH people don't know what NFC is......There is however a test phone available......Is there a way to find out if the phone being sold is NFC Capable or not by looking at the test Phone? In some menu?

I am not really sure, but according to Samsung every S3 comes with an NFC chip by NXP
Do you happen to know any real world applications or use for NFC yet?
There is a NFC option in settings > more settings.

(Q) Google wallet alternative for the UK?

I understand you can install Xposed framework & then spoof Google wallet to work in the UK, but I'm still curious, are there any Google wallet alternatives for the UK? Thank you!

If you're talking about contactless payments, Orange do a "Quick Tap Wallet" app. Unfortunately it's only usable if you're on Orange and have a Galaxy S3 purchased directly from them. O2 may have something similar, but I've not looked into it.

O2 have their wallet app but it doesn't support NFC payments yet. I read somewhere else in a forum that they would have it ready when the time is right. The Visa payWave app is coming at the end of the year, well at least that's what they put at the bottom of the screen during their advert. Google wallet does suport debit and credit cards now, so if you can get it working in the UK then it will work with more ease. Finally, Orange Tap to pay uses the sim card as a secure element, so it will work on most devices apart from nexus because google wants their customers to use wallet.
So really the only hope is Visa payWave for the moment.

Samsung Tab S SM-T807V, wifi not working, stuck on activation screen

Hello, my friend imported a Galaxy tab s model sm-t807v from USA, unfortunately it looks like the wifi and bluetooth chip is completely dead since it doesn't work after a factory reset, this means it's stuck on the registration screen because it asks for a wifi connection to register the tablet and it can't possibly see wifi networks, and also we don't have a Verizon sim card because they don't exist here in Argentina . So we are stuck in this screen and we can't use the tablet at all, there's no way to get pass the activation screen because the wifi is dead, and since it's an imported product there's no warranty.
The official samsung store in my country told my friend they can't do anything about it (at least they confirmed the wifi chip is dead, and they don't do repairs from this model). My friend have vision impairment so he really needs a tablet with a good screen that's why he imported it.
So my question is, is there any way to get pass the activation screen so at least he can use the tablet with broken wifi, or is there any way to install a custom rom that doesn't ask for activation?
Sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to break a stolen tablet, I do have the purchase information from tiendamia.com though. Any help would be appreciated, worst case scenario I was thinking on just disassemble it and sell the parts so he can buy a new one.
