Losing ringtones or notifications? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those who have been losing ringtones/notifications (or having them not play sound), I have worked out the possible cause and a fix. In my case I tried CyanogenMod 10.1 which caused me to lose the contents of my Micro SD card. Using ES File Explorer, I found there was not only a file system for the SD-Card and External SD-Card, but a whole lot of other directories labelled USB A, B, C and so on. Using ES File Explorer with root privileges, I deleted the new directories and voila, my ringtones and notifications are no longer reverting to stock or muting when the phone rings. This was extremely frustrating for me, so I hope it helps someone else.

The problem is fixed when the phone is operating off battery, but the ringtones revert to stock or 'unknown' every morning when I take the phone off the charger. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this problem too? Next step is to copy tones to system/media/audio folder.

[Q] gtab erases some music files leaves others

i put a 32 gb micro card in the tab after loading about 2gb of music on it, it found the card then only recognized about ten files while either deleting or replacing the remaining files with numbered files that come up as unreadable format. i have placed a folder labeled no media but that seems not to work. even sent it back to viewsonic and they reset it to factory ( i did that also) sent it back and it stil does it . any suggestions would be appreciated. its a stock gtab no mods
This is a known issue on some mods, although I didn't know stock also suffered from this problem. You need to create a file named ".nomedia" and place it in either the root directory, or the directory where you store your media. Note that you cannot create this file in Windows. Mac or linux may be able to, but the easiest way is to use a file explorer like ES File explorer, which has the ability to create a file.
thanks for the tip
i will give it a try and let you know what happened,
nope not working
tried as you advised , made a .nomedia file reloaded the sd card put it in wanting the world and the same thing happened. all but a few files were left and then there were 20 to 30 numbered files where there used to be mp3 folders.plus if i select one of these files it says unable to open this file type

my ringtones and notifications change. Not even to the same ones every time???????

hello,
please help..
my ringtones and notifications change. Not even to the same ones every time its just completely random what they change to....
please help.
When does it happen? Does it happen right after you had it hooked up to your computer? If so are you "safely removing the USB" device from windows? And letting the phone mount all the internal memory and storage??
it's a known issue and will happen at random for custom ringtones placed on either the internal SD or external SD. quite annoying and it seems like it's an general Android thing. The only surefire way to fix it is to root and place your custom ringtones/notifications in /system/media/audio/ringtones and /system/media/audio/notifications . Use adb to move the files or get Root Explorer to move the files from your phone.
TKS A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Q] Copy music from external SDHC to Internal storage fails

Hi,
I've had my Prime for a couple of weeks now - a great device, but one thing that is bugging me - I can't seem to copy music to the Music directory on the internal storage.
So far, the only mechanisms I've tried are copying music from the external SDHC card or the external Micro-SDHC card over to the internal memory - fail, or copy over the LAN using ES File Explorer directly - fail.
I have successfully copied movie files over to the internal storage, but the internal Music directory still has just the default files shipped with the tablet.
The one thing I haven't tried is copying directly from a PC over the USB cable, but I shouldn't really need to resort to this surely - it's not an Apple device after all!
Has anyone else had this experience? Am I missing something here? :-/
Regards,
Bruisah
[Replying to my own post - what poor etiquette! ]
Update: I can copy the default music out of the folder, and I can rename the folder, but I cannot write to the folder, nor delete it, nor delete the contents.
Workaround was to rename the folder ".music.orig" to make it 'hidden', create a new "Music" folder, copy the default music across (I haven't listened to it, so...), and copy my own music into the new Music folder...
Presumably, ASUS want to make sure the default music survives a hard reset...(?)
Still, irritating...
Regards,
Bruisah
if u use the asus file manager i can tell u itz bugged (not that badly), it corrupt my download and music folder before on separate occasions.
btw after factory reset the free music are gone.

[Q] Ringtones & Notifications

Please forgive if this is covered...
after a search I was not able to find a solution very quickly.
Completely stock phone... just replaced today due to the original not always receiving my touch input.
I have a few ringtones and notifications that I have used for all my phones... if anything else is used I just don't hear it; I simply think it is not my phone. In the past all I have done is create two folders, "notifications" and "ringtones" with the mp3 files contained within. It has been long enough that I do not remember if I left these folders on "sdcard2", moved them to "sdcard", or to the phones internal storage.
I have the folders containing the mp3's on "sdcard2" and "sdcard"... whenever I try to move it to internal storage (system > media > audio > notifications) I get an error that states I cannot do that... and still no option for these ringtones or notifications when attempting to alter the settings under profile > sounds.
I am using File Expert while attempting to perform this task.
What has changed... or am I doing something wrong??

You should root your phone and make sure to mount your internal memory or external sdcard as r/w or read/write. I personally use root explorer as its a rock solid file explorer that allows you to set r/o read only or r/w read/write quite easily.

I am not comfortable rooting my phone.
I have done this in the past (with my last EVO LTE even) without rooting... I should be able to do it again.
Thanks for the suggestion.... it is appreciated.
I installed an app called "Zedge" and it seems to have worked around the issue... I have ringtones and notifications that sound similar to what I am used to.
I am still puzzled as to why folders on the SD card labeled "notifications" and "ringtones" all of sudden are not recognized...

Write to external SD.

So, I'm not a noob, been rooting and running custom since the Nexus 1. I've searched and tried every fix, but no joy! I'm running doom's latest kernel and Monx latest rom. I've manual changed the proper files, and I've used apps like Fix SD and others and still can't write to my external SD card. Obviously, I'm rooted, so what am I doing wrong? I've seriously tried everything! Even the Music to SD module for exposed acts like it works, but when I try to use Play Music, it says "no space available". Even the Z2 built in "Transfer to SD" facility fails.
Please help!
Thanks,
-Hans

Try this:
1. Using a root-enabled file manager like root explorer, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml file and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add this group definition: <group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save changes.
5. Restart.
:good:
if the above method doesent work for you
you can try using a xposed module called handle external storage, it automaticly alows use of your External SDcard by default
*(you need root , xposed installer and the modle its self (it can be found from within the xposed installer under downloads)
Tried both these methods. To be fair, I tried them both again, just to make sure. As far as I know, all methods modify platform.xml, but no matter what I do, I can't write to the sdcard1 folder. My usual test is using Root Explorer to try and create a folder on Sdcard1. Always fails. Honestly, the ROM I'm using should have been enough, as it comes with write to external SD already enabled via the platform.xml tweak already. I even did a full factory reset yesterday to test. Still no joy.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
-Hans

Still not working
Many thanks to the gents who replied already. Unfortunately, none of the posted solutions are working. I can't find any information in the forums or elsewhere online that points to this. Everywhere I look, it says that the modification to platform.xml is THE answer. However, I've made those modifications nine ways to sunday and I still can't do anything with my external SD card. Can't create a file or folder using Root Explorer or E Strongs. Can't write backups using TiBu is the BU folder is on external SD, etc. Can't set then succesfulyl use the save location for camera or music apps as external SD. Very frustrating.
Has anyone seen or heard of this happening?
Thanks,
-Hans

Nope. Card works fine as far as I can tell. I can write to it via MTP when connected to my lappie and I can read from it just fine. But, I'll try a spare card when I get home just to completely verify.
Thanks,
i'm having the same problem but my phone is not rooted, i usually us ES File Explorer to do my file browsing and management but for some reason i can't delete, create or rename files or folders on the external SD card.
i did a clean format with my SDXC card in the phone when i first started the device and that's usually exFat. and thats when i started to notice the problem,... i couldn't delete or create files or folders from the ES File Explorer app,.... so i did a clean install again with the ES File Explorer and the problem is still there,.... also when taking picture and deleting the unwanted pictures that i took.... i would still see the pictures i deleted in the picture gallery / album....
im still confused on whats going on,.... last night i reformatted my SDXC card to FAT32,... but the problem is still there,...
i tried using the File Commander app that came pre-installed with the device...... for some reason i can rename, delete and even create files and folders.... this is the only app that let's me do all those things when it comes to the external SD card.
other apps such as QuickPic won't allow me to delete, rename or whatever i have to do my pictures on the external SD card

If you're not rooted, it's how KitKat now handled external (SDCard) memory. It does not allow apps to read/write outside of it's own folder.
oh wow,..... so what about the pictures i took from the camera? i can never delete picture's??? (data storage: SD card)
i guess i have to get use to using the built-in apps to do some of the stuff i need to do,...

Yeah. That's expected behavior on a non-rooted KK phone. My problem is that I'm rooted and I can't get anything to write to external. Total Commander, Root Explorer, ES File Explorer, Camera apps, etc. Nothing will write to External SD no matter how many times I make the required mods to the platform.xml file. It is driving me nuts.

I had the same issue before when I upgraded my S4 to KK, but installing FolderMount solved it, when I started the app it showed me a message that my phone has some settings that will not make the app work and it asked me if I want to correct it.. I said yes, restart and viola every thing is okay...

I don't know if it will work on Z2 ( I still didn't have it yet ) but you might try it...

Yeah you need to use the built-in file manager, File Commander, to delete your photos on microsd for non-rooted.
Looks like it was a bad card after all. I swapped it out and now everything works as it is supposed to. I have other issue, but I'll open a new thread for those
Thanks for the help folks!
