4.1.2 Update Help - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA,
Am currently running rooted, jellybean stock 4.1.1 & would like to upgrade to 4.1.2. However I can't do it through OTA or Kies as my device status is 'modified' I've tried the work around of removing the SD card but no joy so am going to have to use the Odin method.
My question is if I upgrade to 4.1.2 will I keep all my settings on the OS and system apps as I've spent a lot of time getting things just as I want them.
One final question; if I go to 4.1.2 will I have to deal with the whole exclamation mark thing as I'm rooted or does that just apply to custom roms?

Your apps and files wont be affected but you will have to root again.

help me update my s3 pls?

Hi every one.
Got my s3 when it launched & rooted it with odin using the unlocked kernel? Can't remember exactly ?
My phone keeps telling me there is a software update, but it fails when I try install.
Looking for some advice on what I should do to update it. But obviously I don't want to lose root access.
Also jelly bean is due soon & I'm just wondering whether to wait till then?
Im currently using a stock Rom I think?
I really like the way I have it set up at the min & I'd like to keep it as close to how it is now on jelly?
Can you make a custom Rom from my phone & put it to jelly when it's released.
Any help or advice would be great.
Cos I'm totally lost to be honest?
there was a member who had a problem like this.
1-)people suggested him to flash a stock rom update it and root it again. ( of course do a nandroid backup or titanium backup )
then there will be no problems.
2-) you can choose to flash any available rom for your s3. directly put it in your internal sd and flash with cwm.
you can search that in forum.
P.S: Roms are for use of everybody, you can select what you want to install ( you dont need to search a Rom made for your phone )
OTA's don't work of you are rooted and running a custom recovery.
Flash the latest stock ROM via Odin and root it, but you won't get official OTA's when you are rooted.

So flash back stock kernel through odin , update it & then re-root?
Can jb be rooted yet?
I might wait till jb is released officially, it's due in a few days isn't it?
Thanks for the reply guys but I'm still a bit unsure what I'm doing tbh .
I always take my time doing stuff like this cos I don't want to brick my phone?

[Q] Jellybean 4.1.1 OTA update fails at 26%

Topic say itself what my question is
Q: Everytime i do an OTA update it starts installing but on 26% it always fails with small android guy falls with a red exclamatory mark. I did the update previously when i was updating to jellybean for the first time. It was ok but not now. The thing i only done is previously i was at 4.1.2 XXELLA. But yesterday i flashed back an stock ICS ROM via Odin. now if im updating OTA to jellybean it keeps failing.
++ I have XXELLA bootloader as i have updated it via Odin the bootloader remains there.
Any suggestions please?
Why are you using the OTA update, why not just download the latest stock rom from the android development section?
judging by your username, you are rooted
and root takes away the OTA, which you shouldn't be using anyway if you're an xda member
Try to use Kies if OTA fails
No i was rooted before but not now. Every thing is stock but OTA still fails.

[Q] A way to update to a rooted JB

Hey guys,
I would greatly appreciate your help.
Until now, I have been running my SGS2 I9100 with CF-Root 5.6 and ICS 4.0.4.
Since recently, I am bothered by the OTA update that wants to install Jelly Bean. Since CF-Root doesn't seem to be updated anymore, that won't work. I am also extra careful since I seem to have one of those phone versions that are rarely listed:
PDA I9100XXLQB
PHONE I9100XXLQ6
CSC I9100OXALQB
My main goal is to have an up to date rooted Jelly Bean running. I doesn't have to be heavily modified. I'm just not sure how to go from here. If I install e.g. the Dorimanx kernel, I would need a custom ROM as well, right? Could I simply install NeatROM and be done? Is there an even simpler or better alternative?
I have Titanium/Nandroid/EFS backups and am ready to go. I'm just so unsure where to go to...
Thanks for your help in advance!
R: [Q] A way to update to a rooted JB
Since you're rooted, if you do not have the bricking, you can just flash the rom you want.. If you have the bricking, flash a safer kernel without wipe and then the rom..

Since you are on 4.0.4 I would be worried about the brickbug.
Flash a new kernel that you know does not have brickbug then restart recovery and do a factory reset and flash a new ROM.

My friend as your on ics 4.0.4 you will be vulnerable to the brickbug, i would reccomend you to flash the siyaah kernal then go through the android development section, and download any rom you like, flash it after, then your sorted. I would reccomend you The Militant Rom v1.5, it ticks pretty much all the boxes and its pre-rooted which you want. Good luck.

That is exactly the information I needed. Thank you very much!
I booted up CWM, used the GS2 Kernel Wipe to be sure, installed Siyah, installed Militant ROM (with full wipe). I appreciate your recommendations, it runs smooth like butter right now! I was astonished all my Apps are still up and running without fail. Everything works (so far) and looks great.
Hey, as it turns out, a problem occured. When I start the Play Store, it crashed immediately. I can access it by deleting its App cache, but installing a new app or updating an old one leads to a crash. I already tried deleting and readding my Google account, but it didn't help.
What can I do to fix that?
[edit] Okay, I fixed that by deinstalling the Play Store completely and reinstalling by manually downloading the APK. Also, starting LBE privacy guard resulted in a boot loop. I deinstalled it in safe mode and installed LBE security guard from this forum.

Current firmware not supported to update through kies

Ive heard recently that sgs3 is soon to be receiving the 4.3 update, skipping 4.2.2 all together. 2 questions.
1. Apparently my current firmware isn't supported to update via kies, meaning I can't check for updates via kies. Was running cm10.1 nightlys then decided to re flash stock back onto the device. So im running official 4.1 touchwiz with stock kernel.
And 2. Will this update be available over the air since kies doesn't want to work? I mean it should right? I am on stock now so I don't see why not? Thanks guys all help appreciated

did you follow the guide to get back to stock conditions? including non-modifed status etc.? usually KIES should even work with root, just removes root after the update though.
I guess the easiest, and maybe fastest bet would be to just download the update once on sammobile or here on xda and flash via Odin.

[Q] manual upgrading to 4.3 to get rid of demo apps

I have a rooted i9300 locked to Orange France and OTA android 4.3. I want to get rid of the extra software Orange installed (demo games and other unuseful stuff). Is it ok to install Android 4.3 I9300XXUGML3 Official Firmware manually with odin or will I brick my phone? Installing official firmware is cleaner then uninstalling all unwanted programms I think...
After that I want to unlock (I read this tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541909) but with 4.3 I think the best option is buying a code ? There is no safe way to go back to 4.1.1 to try as far as I know or are there already “easy” solutions to unlock?
Flashing official firmware will not brick your phone, follow the guide and factory reset afterward.
On 4.3 you have efs v2 so can only unlock with a purchased code. You cannot go back to any firmware that would enable the old patch system to unlock.

If you're phone is rooted why dont you delete the demo's and blootware yourself?
They can be found in system/app.
Its much easier than install a new rom and root it again.

Thanks for the reply's
Coolhof, believe me, for me it's much easier to install a new rom and root with Odin then to delete every single app that I "think" is blootware from Orange....
Everything went well and now I have a pretty clean stock 4.3, in fact it went so well that I'm thinking of installing SuperNexus 4.4.2 custom Rom
