Dears,
Kindly I want to know some info about swap as I am a newbie in root.. I downloaded 2 apps for this "MemoryInfo & Swapfile Check and Swapper For Root" and I tried them.. They are very amazing apps but sometimes I don't feel that they are working.. Anyways, I disabled the swap and I deleted the swap file from the SD card after using "Swapper For Root" and then I tried "MemoryInfo & Swapfile Check" to make sure that my device can do the swap or not and then I Uninstalled both of them but when I wrote in terminal "free" after I deleted both of the 2 apps I found the below...
Swap: 61432 37240 24192
I want to know if it is normal or not to find a swap space like this.. I used MemoryInfo & Swapfile check and Swapper For Root Only.
If this space is not normal or it will affect negatively on my device or my SD card so I wish you can help me solve this problem.
My device is SE Xperia Mini Pro SK17i "Rooted" through a guide on SE Forum, Build Number 4.1.B.0.587.
Thanks in advance & I very much appreciate your support.
Best Regards,

I wouldn't delete anything from /system/xbin. Did you reboot your phone after uninstalling the apps and deleting the init.d scripts?

Please don't create more than one thread about the same question as this is against the rules. I have deleted your other thread as it's the same as this one and you're already receiving help here.
Thanks

I am sry about the second thread but I thought that I will recieve no more replies so I just wanted to refresh the post no more.. I am sry again
After I uninstalled the apps I restarted.. And after I deleted the scripts I did a reboot too.. But it is still the same
If it is okay to find a swap space like this in my SD so I don't have to worry.. The problem is that I don't have a PC or a Lap nowadays.. On the other hand, I don't want to disable the option of swap in case I may do it later after taking a backup from SD.
Thanks in advance guys for your support.

If you look in your sdcard, can you see the swap file? If you can, you can either delete it or try and figure out how to reset that particular swap using terminal emulator. If you want to try the second solution, you need to look for the swap in /sys/block and let me know if you find it.

No I can't see the swap file in my SD card... I searched by "swap" and I found "mkswap, swapon & swapoff" in /system/xbin and I checked /sys/block as you told me and I found some files with the names of "ram0, ram1, ram2.. Till ram7 and zram0" "loop1 till loop64" "dm-1 to 64" "mmcblk0" "mtdblock0 till mtdblock3".. What do you think!?

okay I took a look in the app...
I would try this in terminal emulator:
su
echo "1" > /dev/block/mtdblock3/reset
if it doesn't work, remove the "" from around the 1.

in terminal try:
su
swapoff /dev/block/mtdblk3
if that doesn't work you can look again for the swap file. According to the app it should be somewhere in your system folder or you can just set the swappiness to 0
again in terminal:
su
sysctl -w vm.swappiness=0
which rom are you running right now, because you should also be able to restore just the system partition from a nandroid back up with out losing all your settings....

Have you checked using "free" to see if the swap is still being used, if the numbers don't change over time then no swapping is happening. If the swap is in RAM then there is no harm to the device. If the swap is on the sdcard or internal memory then there may be a slow damaging of the media, but I think this takes a long time. Try setting vm.swappiness to 0 this will minimize the swapping until you are ready to flash a new ROM.
One reason why I asked what kind of rom you are on is because by flashing the rom again you should wipe out the swap. This is easy to do with with a custom rom but it is a little bit harder to do with a Sony stock ROM. Also any nandroid back up from before you set up the swap will wipe it out also.

So I was trying to install an update to an app and then it said that I didn't have enough space?!?! I don't have a lot of apps and I don't have anything special on my phone. But somehow I'm running out of System Storage (Device Memory) space?!?!
Attached are some screenshots. I've been trying to find how to view the system storage contents or find its path but haven't found anything useful. What is going on with my storage? What is using so much space?
Thanks!

Could be a wifi dump file... but I was under the impression that was an issue isolated to a specific firmware release on I9100G model phones only. And your screenshots look like ICS... (which is not available on G model phones yet)
What model phone do you have, and what version of firmware or ROM are you running?
Thanks for your reply. I have a GT-I9100 and am running ICS 4.0.3 XXLPB.

Hmm... do you have root? It may be worth checking to see if you have a file named something like "dumpstate_sys_WIFI_OFF_xxxxxxxxx_error.log.txt" that's pretty big in your /data folder.
Checked my phone, Applications take up only 158 MB.
You probably have some heavy games/multimedia applications installed. Otherwise, I cannot understand how your Applications take up 434 MB. (But even Google Play application size is limited by 50 MB) +To that, additional data storage by these applications, and it is sufficient to fill up your phone.
Perhaps, you should try to install/move some of your programs to SDCard.
If you have root and busybox, from terminal,
"cd /data"
"du -hs *"
will display disk usage by files/folders. find which files/folders use most storage, report here.

Yes, it's safe. It's just a log file. In fact, the workaround to "fix" this issue essentially keeps this file from being created.

See this thread (post 10, specifically) for the "workaround" to keep the file from being generated in the first place.
It's not my solution, I'm just linking to it.
"32K com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
32K flixster"
straight from Terminal. That's all there is in the data folder. I checked in Finder too...
Using an app to sort things by size, the biggest thing is a ClockWorkMod backup but that's over 2 GB so I assume that's not in the Device Memory/System Storage place. Anyways here's the path:
"/clockworkmod/backup/2012-05-05.12.04.32/data.ext4.tar" 1.69 GB and
"/clockworkmod/backup/2012-05-05.12.04.32/system.ext4.tar" 467 MB
The next biggest culprit is:
"/DCIM/.thumbnails/.thumbdata3--1967290299" which is a whopping 274 MB.
Thanks again for all your replies.

That looks like you're looking in the wrong data folder. If you're going through the "My Files" app, then the data folder you looked in was actually /sdcard/data. Which is not the same as /data.
Are you rooted? You need root access to browse the /data folder, and you'll need a different file explorer than "My Files", like Root Explorer.

Again, these are children of the /sdcard folder. Which is on a separate partition from the "system storage". So you are not looking in the right place. I'm betting you're not rooted, either.
Yes, I am rooted (little yellow hazard sign at boot up and CWM and Superuser Apps).
I don't know how to access the system storage partition then... I'm certainly no pro in the Android world though...

Well, do you have "Root Explorer", (paid) or "ES File Explorer" (free)? Get one of those, navigate to /data, sort by size. (if you use ES File Explorer, you'll have to enable going up to the root folder, and enable root browsing) See if you've got a wifi dump file.
BTW, the "little yellow hazard sign at boot up" doesn't necessarily mean you have root. That just means you have flashed a kernel (via Odin) that was not signed by Samsung. More often than not, this is a kernel that roots your phone, or is used to root your phone, but not necessarily.
Thanks again ctomgee. Apparently no wifi dump file on /data... Sigh...

Well, do what mirbeksm suggested in post 5... that should spit out disk usage of the /data folder ordered by files/folders, as he stated... post the results, or maybe you'll be able to figure it out after running.
I'm trying but can't quite figure out how to view the root folder from the computer (Mac to make things more complicated), it goes straight to /sdcard.

You can't run an adb shell from a mac?
I guess you could use a terminal emulator (there are several available from the play store) directly from the phone to start a shell, then type the commands from there. (you may have to do "su" first, if the prompt is a "$" instead of a "#")

Open a shell on your phone, preferable "adb shell", but I guess "ConnectBot" or similar is good enough.
Become root (using Link2SD, I assume you've got root).
Run the command "lsof", best is to do this once you see the file is growing. So try deleting it, and wait for it to re-appear. Due to the size of the file, it must be written to for a long time before it fills up the SDcard. Now run "lsof" (stands for "LiSt Open Files".
Code:
[email protected]:/ # lsof > /sdcard/files.txt
Now open the file "files.txt" in your favourite editor and search for a line containing the file name.
It may look like:
com.andro 7817 app_54 32 ??? ??? ??? ??? /system/fonts/DroidNaskh-Regular.ttf
The first number "7817" is the process number owning the file in question (here /system/fonts/DroidNaskh-Regular.ttf, but you are looking for thubdata). See what process this is using "ps":
Code:
[email protected]:/ # ps 7817
USER PID PPID VSIZE RSS WCHAN PC NAME
app_54 7817 166 283756 24068 ffffffff 2aabc3f0 S com.android.calendar
Ah... calendar...! Now you what what app create this file, and you can continue the investigation of this app!

Ok, this is a system process. I guess you've got some image with an invalid embedded thumbnail. Move all images from your device to your computer and see if the problem goes away. In this case, at least one of your images is broken, and you'll have to find which. Move all movies as well to be of the safe side.

You can find it within 10 operations. Divide and conquer.
First move all the pictures to verify the error goes away. If not, I was wrong, and we'll have to try something else.
If the error goes away, restore half of the pictures, i.e. 500 of them. Did the error occur again? Remove half of the half again, i.e. 250 etc. By dividing by half all the time, you will get down to one single picture in 10 steps.

Hi is there a way to clean up these /0 directories who looks identical?
It add's an additional /0 directory in emulated every time I do a clean flash. Don't that use up my internal storage?
I'm using Temasek's cm 10.1 unofficial v83 + kernel but i don't think it has to do with the ROM
Is it safe to just delete these directories or is there any other way around this?

You need to upgrade your recovery application to the latest version to stop getting multiple /0 folders.
You only need one level of /0. And, yes you can delete the redundant levels. But make sure your files under the last level are copied to the sole remaining level.
/0 level came in with multi-user support in 4.2

Thanks for answering
I've flashed cwmtouch 6.0.2.8 awhile ago and the levels of /0's stopped adding up.
I've copied all the files from the last levels to emulated/0.
Then i deleted the files from the last levels except one made by a rom i had several months ago. It can't seem to be deleted because of some elevated permissions. I've tried with several Explorer's with no luck.
How do I get around to change permissions or simply get rid of former systemfiles not in use anymore?

You can try with philz recovery and aroma file manager inside the recovery, see first posts of thread.
and please search next time, this has been discussed way too much

Use terminal. Then remove the folder using the 'rm -rf' command. You may need to read up on this if you aren't familiar with Linux commands.

Back you files up to a PC, then boot to recovery and format /sdcard. That will remove all the 0/0/0/0/0/0 folders, then boot and copy your files back.

Actually i did search but didn't understand what to do and what to search for. Thats why i finally asked the question here in the Q n A section. The search motor in the android app is also really difficult to search with.

Yes look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/info-flashed-4-2-sdcard-data-t2274218
Firstly I am a complete noob to root/roms etc etc, and my main goal was to increase the memory of my Samsung galaxy ace.
I have been unsuccessful after following advice in all different threads, so thought maybe if I started my own thread some lovely peeps around here may be able to help me get it sorted.
OK so what I've done so far
Rooted phone
installed cwm recovery
installed cyanogen mod 10.1
partitioned sd card to fat32 and ext3
installed int2ext+ script.
I used terminal emulator to get the script into the init.d folder following some prompts foud online, (using es file explorer I kept getting a read only message)
I formatted and mounted sd-ext via recovery menu
At the moment it still isn't showing the extra memory of the sd ext partition.
The current contents of the init.d folder are as follows:
00banner
40int2ext
50selinuxrelabel
90userinit
So if someone can point me in the right direction of what to do next because I am now comlpletely lost .
Thanks Guys!!!!!

Hi,
I don't know, how would I find out or set permissions?
I have es file explorer which says in properties that it is readable:yes, writable:yes, hidden:no Is this what you mean?????
Sorry total noob, can follow instructions but as for understanding what half this tech jargon is...........:silly:
Reboot into CWM
Mounts/Storage>Mount System
Install zip from SD card>choose the attachment zip

Thankyou, managed to download root browser, permissions are rw-r--r--
Check permissions of other init.d script and set them the same way for the int2ext+. Or just delete the script and flash it directly from recovery.
Good afternoon. As the 8 GB aren't enough for me, I've been looking for a solution. While doing so, I found the INT2EXT4 script, which mounts /data on the second partition of the SD card. The first time I flashed it (after enabling init.d support with an app) it didn't work at all. Then, I realised this script is written assuming that the second partition of the card is mmcblk0p2. But on the M4, it's mmcblk1p2 (found it out with another app).
I changed those lines on the script, but it didn't work either. I analyzed all the lines, and I can't see where the problem could be. Has anyone tried this, or could somebody help me with this issue? I think it could be really useful for a lot of users.
Another thing: flashing the file through TWRP gave me an error, so I copied the file directly to /system/etc/init.d and set the permissions manually. I hope this is not a problem, but let me know if it could be...
sounds interesting... ill take a look at it soon!
Have you checked the "adress" of internal sd? In the script there is a connection between internal and external storage so i would assume that both "adresses" need to be correct in order for the script to work. Just an opinion....

I think there's a problem with the commands that the script uses. If I try to do umount from the terminal, nothing happens. So maybe the script doesn't work in this phone, but if any of you are able to make it do so, let me know. So I think it's better to build the kernel from source, but before that make changes in the fstab file. With that, /data will be mounted at the second partition of the sdcard directly at boot time. Trying to do this now, but I'm facing some difficulties building the kernel. If I make it work, I'll post it
