[Q] Vanilla Jelly Bean - AT&T LG Optimus G

Has anyone tried porting the stock, rooted, or otherwise Rom from the Nexus 4?
If no one has I will give it a shot. The two phones aren't all that different ours has the LTE on the chip set activated but I believe they have basically the same Qualcomm chip set.
Also if anyone knows more about it than I do feel free to inform me. I'm always up for a hacking adventure but I don't want to start something I'll never be able to finish.

I should figured AT&T would screw us like that. Man this is gonna take some work, but I certainly will give it a shot. This won't be my first port of a Rom but it'll be my first one where I've had to work on a Kernel. Wish me luck guys.

Head over to the IRC channel, #lg-optimus-g, most of the current developers are always on there and they will be more than willing to have someone new that has some experience and willingness to help!

I believe I've found a sort of attempt at what I'm looking to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099784
This essentially turns the phone into a Nexus 4 so that essentially the firmware is tricked into thinking that our phone is the Nexus 4. It appears as if in order to put vanilla android on here I'll need to take pieces of this hack, and sort of finish it. Like getting the Capacitive buttons working, which will require a bit of kernel hacking. It appears as if reflashing the modem, which I think after I take apart the original firmware I can sort of shove in there, will fix the LTE, so says the post, and the issue of the SD card. This method may be more intensive than is necessary. However it's looking like this is all I've got to work with as of right now.
I'm going to try and make a Rom that's still ICS and as close to Vanilla as is possible, then I'll give moving it up to Jelly Bean a shot. Also this may take a while as I am in college, and I've only got a small amount of experience so this will sort of be a learning experience for me.
Also I'm not too familiar with using IRC. I'm used to doing stuff on my own. For my original Android phone, the HTC Inspire. The dev community over there was awesome, they're probably still going, but I'm more used to taking a base like CM 9 or CM 10 nightlies and making them my own for my phone. So this will be a hacking adventure. A hackventure if you will.

Where have all the Devs gone?

Just curious..Where have all the Devs gone? The first few days the dev section seemed to be on fire! I haven't seen anything new pop up in a bit. I'm sure I'm not the only one who can be asking this question. I know they do this as hobby/passion and for free which is why I'm simply asking for "proof of life".lol.
Anyone know of anything in the works? Giving me even more of a reason to check the forums 100 times a day like a true flashaholic ;-)

Take a walk outside for some fresh air.
Messages like these will not motivate any dev in getting 'cracking'.
what do you mean, it is doing just fine.....they have been plugging away at getting CWM working....which without leaves most users at a disadvantage cuz some people just seem to have issues with oden and ADB. now that they have an alpha of CWM roms will be coming next. and i also think that since ICS is coming up the future that devs are waiting for that. why keep dropping ginger roms? and i see them working on ICS roms as well. we have a stable ginger rom in TPC's/da g's kernel mix. i still see the same devs working and plugging away and we have more now than we did 2 weeks ago...
they are working, and like you said.... they are working on there own time and for FREE.
we should all be greatful. when they stop working be worried.
I think ICS is in the works. The DEV just wants to clean up some of the other issues he is working on. Yes this is vague but I do not want to over step my bounds.

I too am eager however the one and only rom we have is stable. I can wait for ICS as long as it takes. We have an overclock kernel as well. With other devices I have seen dozens of roms and dozens of kernels with only one or two having full functionality. We have been very fortunate. With that said there seems to be less than the usual amount of Development on this device but remember this is brand new. It takes a while... with the streak we only had a few devs and even then at one point really only one dev. Give it a few weeks. If not do like I am and imerse yourself in reading on how to make roms. I develop android apps and have a few in the market, now that does not qualify me to make roms it does mean that I have the ability to learn like many others could do if they were motivated to do so.

I THOUGHT I made it clear that was not my intention at all. Thanks for the other responses they actually answered my question. There are many people like me who are fairly new to this. I am coming from the inspire and when I first got it there were tons of roms available, but I got it 4 months after launch. Then I realized I could have been using the desire HD roms. Can the international rooms be flashed using Odin?

NO. You will brick your device if you try to flash international ROMs, as they have a different processor as well as other various differences that essentially make them completely different beasts with the same form factor.
Reading a bit more would inform you as to why development is slow right now and why you can't flash international ROMs.
To give you the sparknotes version of what's going on however:
As others have said, we only have an alpha version of CWM, so devs are working on getting that polished up.
Second, devs are working on a way to get around the flash counter, so that you do not have any problems with a warranty exchange in the future. If you don't care about your warranty or want to risk a return with a triggered flash counter, go for it. Other phones have had their flash counter bypassed, so I'm sure our talented devs will come up with a solution fairly soon.
Also, as others have mentioned, we have one stable ROM already, and a great kernel, so that should solve most problems with using the stock ROM until more development occurs.
Lastly, with ICS on the horizon, there is not really a good reason to produce a ton of GB ROMs, so be patient and use the stable one we have already until ICS drops in a few months or so.
The longest anybody has had this device is 11 days right now, and we already have a stable ROM and OC/UV capable kernel. In my opinion, that's a damn good start, and I have a feeling that development will eventually be huge on this device. Give it a few months. =]
So funny how everyone keeps talking about ICS like its coming in two weeks! Btw the release date for that that everyone think is coming soon is for the International version!

Nobody here referenced the international release of official ICS. I think most people here know that it doesn't mean anything for our devices. However, it will be here eventually, and devs are most likely already working on porting over an unofficial version.

There are various dev versions of ICS cooking as we speak; and, I also wouldn't be surprised if Samsung surprises everyone with an official version on/around March 15th... including a US version.

I feel the same way. ATT and Samsung know they need to do something to pull ahead of android competition; they've done it with quality android hardware, now they need to do it with consumer peace-of-mind on the software upgrade front. Nowhere has Samsung said that ICS for "international note" is coming in Q1 2012. They merely say it is coming to the "note", period. I think ICS will come for the US variant sooner rather than later. I know when I got my Atrix, people whined and hollared that it would never get GB. ATT delivered GB very soon, to the scorn of the red-faced naysayers. I know the Atrix was Motorola, but its still an example of a carrier pushing a fast update. Samsung is an excellent company, especially with their Android devices. If any company leads the way for quicker full-product-line android upgrades, I'd expect it to be them.
Pure speculation and I'm maybe totally wrong, but I think the US Note will see ICS very soon.

thank you guys and gals
This is the downside of getting a newly launched device. I went thru it with the asus transformer 101. That was a little painful in the beginning, but the brilliant minds solved all the problems. It took about a month to really get rolling.
I picked up the Infuse about a year after launch and it was humming within 3 days cause all the hard work had already been done by those great minds in their forum.
The advantage with the Note is it's really great as a stock phone out of the box.
The smart guys and gals here want to advance just as much as we want them to succeed in making this Note the best it can be. So, Patience, and let them work. When they have something good they will be shouting it as loud as can be.
Support and good words go along way. We appreciate you guys more than you know! Thank you for all your efforts, and time away from your work, family, friends and hobbies to devote to this great piece of hardware.
this forum has gotten more action in the past week then the atrix did in the first 2 months. lol.
Damn you guys that are coming from other forums are spoiled!!! I remember waiting foreeevveer just to flash something on the atrix.. and then when CWM came out i was like "wtf is a CWM?" (atrix was my first android).
Stock rom on this phone is doing pretty well for me .Froze all the bloat, not using touchwiz -- and its like i dont even have anything from Samsung on there (besides the SPEN).
I can do without a rom until ICS comes out.. and that is going to do wonders for this device. ICS on the ATRIX is like a breath of fresh air, cant wait to see it on this beast.
Your right, I guess I was kinda spoiled coming from the inspire/desire HD forums. I never realized how long it takes to get things up and running. I apologize if I came off as being impatient. Again that was NOT my intention. I love these forums and appreciate the Devs hard work immensely.
On another "Note" (I know,I know, sorry) I was at best buy mobile last night where I know a couple sales reps and they mentioned that they hoped someone ported over Ics soon as the Samsung rep they spoke with at their store said Ics won't be coming our way for a good while. I myself take that with a grain of salt though. Do you think that a Samsung sales rep would even really know the Ics release schedule?

I guess I never looked too far into the flash counter. I had read a few threads about it, and people seemed to be convinced that AT&T would get fussy about it. I suppose it doesn't really mean much if you end up putting your phone back to stock and unrooting before returning it. If it wasn't for rooting and such, developers couldn't make apps and flash stuff to the phone, so I guess it doesn't really make sense at all why they would care if the device has been flashed with something else, especially if it is returned to a stock state for a return.

CM7 in the meantime?

So I was thinking earlier today, according to a few people, we apparently have RIL working just not a kernel source to make AOKP/AOSP stable.
I also thought, well, we have plenty of people still running GB ROMs and people on GB firmware. Why don't people try to put together a CM7.2 ROM since we do have source for GB.
I'm pretty sure Android is all about choice and variety so I ask someone who is experienced in porting, development, etc. Why doesn't someone get in touch with Tekk, or whoever has RIL working and pop out a CM7 (.2?) port, it's still AOSP so it'll hold people over and hell, some people would probably prefer it, not to mention that I'm sure people would rather have a form of Cyanogenmod over nothing at all.
I have no clue how, nor the computer to ever begin trying it, so it's why I ask.
This would definitely be nice. Cm7.2 is amazing on my incredible. I would love to see it on the rezound! Maybe... Just maybe...

I thought we had everything we needed available?
If RIL is fixed for ICS AOSP ROMs supposedly, and we're waiting for kernel source to get it stable, couldn't we translate the RIL fixes down to a GB AOSP ROM, I thought also since we have GB kernel source, all loose ends would be tied up?
We would need someone to take time to make a RIL. I doubt they would. They said in the passed they didn't want to cause of ICS but if we can't progress in CM9 due to kernel source. Why not progress in CM7. Might be a step back but you would make a lot of people happy.

This is kinda my sentiment, if we can't progress any farther on CM9 until HTC/Verizon get the OTA out (which could come as early as next week or as late as 2 months from now, if the latest June-July report is accurate), why not do a CM7 side project, it would seem we have most of, if not all of what we need available.

Which to me and probably many others is better than possibly nothing and if nothing else, just gives us some more variety which is never bad.
There are a ****load of other fixes aside from RIL that were done for ICS that would have to be redone for GB. For example, things like EGL took a long time to fix for ICS.

Why is everybody asking for something instead of attempting to learn something and do it as their own "side-project"?
I got sick of waiting for AOSP, so I found one a ROM I liked and I asked the original dev if I could try to port it. He said go for it, and so I started working on it. Once I have a something worthy of going public, it might just pop up somewhere...
Anyways, the point is, why do I see everybody asking for things but nobody willing to try and do it themselves? Isn't the whole point of Android the ability to tinker with it and make it do whatever you want?
...but, if you're going to depend on someone else to do it for you, it just doesn't seem fair to ask the developers here to "hurry up" or go out of their way to develop something they aren't interested in using themselves..

I understand you were asking about the possibility and not saying something like "Hurry the hell up and give me at least CM7!" and honestly my comment wasn't directed at you at all, or any other single person for that matter. It just seems like in general, we have a common theme of people asking for things like they are entitled, but having no interest in actually contributing to anything at all. I was attempting to point out that really any of us could learn to do these things, if we would just try to spend some time on it...

I would love to learn, however I lack the time requirement to learn it with a full time + job, a three year old, a preggers wife, and a house to get ready for the new demon spawn. Sucks because I'd probably be pretty good at it too. I have no expectations on devs and will continue to patiently wait for anything they release.

[Q] Can anybody help develop a PARANOIDANDROID ROM for our beloved TF201?

Really interested to flash that ROM onto my Prime. Just that there isn't one specifically made for our TF201. Anyone capable of doing it? Here's a guide posted by them themselves. Just that I'm not skilled in it. :x Thanks in advance to whoever that can help!

There wouldn't really be too much point as one of the main features of Parandroid is having tablet mode which.....errr you have as its already a tablet. A lot if work for something you already have.

Actually, part of why people like Paranoid Android so much is because of the ability to not only change modes (tablet, phablet, phone), but also set per-application DPI, size, and modes to change how each fragment operates.
Example: Youtube uses two modes (phone/tablet), and I like the phone mode better. But, I can't use it. Even restoring a phone APK of Youtube results in the tablet UI. PA lets you define Youtube and make it act like a phone!
That kind of flexibility is very powerful, and useful until we get powerful, properly built tablet apps with all of the features we desire. A lot of work? Sure. Possibly worth it? Definitely.

like what Akkeresu said below, it's not only the ability to change modes(although that's what I want most). And plus, who says I wanted tablet mode since I already have it? -.- I want it to look and feel like a Nexus 7. Which is only possible with this ROM as far as I know.

Actually no. The developer of PA quoted this, "no, but someone else can. if you have cm10 you can have pa aswell. it would run right away, theres barely any adjustments to make on our side and aosp is the same on any device anyway, no matter if phone or tablet." So yeah, he said it doesn't really need much tweaking from their side. Just hope someone can just help out to make this happen..:good:

I can do this quite easily as already have done it once for the prime.
The thing is I really don't have the time to keep remaking it constantly and re uploading new nightlies so if you wait a bit longer for some of the bugs to be ironed out I will knock one up but then I will only make a new one once a month or so.

I 've been looking for a way to get the Nexus 10 UI on my TF201 for like a week. Ofcourse I ended up nowhere. I can get all but the <back> <home> <app switcher> buttons to get in the middle of the bottom, and the rest of the status bar on the top. So during my search i came across the capabilities of the PA Rom. Sadly, I then discovered that the rom is not available for the TF201. Was ready to post in the Q&A section for "how to get the nexus 10 UI on the tf201" but figured i 'd take a look at this thread, and just saw your comment.
so.. in a nutshell, unless you can point me to the right direction (another direction; a way to get the Nexus 10 UI on the TF201) i 'm bumping the request posed with this thread, and ofcourse thanks for your willingness to develop!:good:

The thing is I really don't have the time to keep remaking it constantly and re uploading new nightlies so if you wait a bit longer for some of the bugs to be ironed out I will knock one up but then I will only make a new one once a month or so.

Rom porting

How hard is porting roms from the att HTC one x to the rezound? Please don't go to hard on me. Just was curious. Seems a lot of devs that are here also are on HTC one x. Awesome phone but sucks not having s-off and no expandable memory

I would think it would take some effort and knowledge to port a rom and have it run up to standards. So probably not that easy.
Thank you Jon. Just was curious cause I have both phones. The one x is very snappy but the rezound us alot more fun to. Dev with.

Actually i just looked and found a guide to porting a sense rom in between devices. It actually doesnt look that hard, it looks more like replacing just replacing files if anything. I think it just depends on what rom your trying too port. If your trying to port over a different sense version it might require more work. If your trying to port an AOSP rom it might not be too difficult. Porting an android version is probably the hardest.
I see. Would be nice to try figure out that stuff. I am too inexperienced to try I think. Done minor things. Was just seeing if the one xl jellybean update that dropped last night would help the devs over here.

I was actually thinking of making a very basic rom to start with like a sense 3.6 rom that might have some tweaks and such. Maybe try making my own AOSP rom, though im not entirely sure how to go about making an AOSP rom. I suppose i could also try using the guide i found to port over a sense rom as well.
Wanna share where that guide is?

I havent tried it yet, it might work.
This one may work out better

Just keep in mind when porting, it will be better as well as easier if you can port from a device similar to what you are porting too. Similar cpus, gpus, lte, screen resolution and network type. It all needs to be taken into consideration.
Personally if I was you, I'd start looking at Sprint devices if you want to port to the Rezound. Sprint and Verizon have the closest devices and the closest bands of any other providers out there.
Of course there are always tricks to getting around porting a full rom. Once you get to going and learn your way around porting real good, you'll learn what they are and how to do it. If you need an example of this, look up my AOKP + TouchWiz hybrid for the Rezound.
Edit: This thread made me feel nastalgic. I remember back when I first started porting. I worked and worked hard learning new tricks here and there. Back then I wrote a guide. It wouldn't be useful now, but if you wanted to humor me and see how this old dog did it back in the day you should check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169570

It did but i figured out the problem. I didnt expect the rom to work since i tried porting the 4.2 rom from the One X. :silly: Ill try a sense 4 or 4.1 rom later.

Cm10.1,Photon kernel

So as I understand it, the Photon has drivers issues which is why we dont have a port of for instant a droid bionic version of moto ICS, or moto jellybean. I am wondering what we need to get a kernel going. If this happened this would open up the possibility for doing webtop on a non stock rom.(Which I really would love cm 10.1 with ubuntop) I have been using linux for many years and am familiar with compiling and modifying kernels and packages I am just still new with android I came from the Epic 4G. I just would like to be pointed in the right direction or maybe someone who already makes kernels has attempted this and we could work together.
Thanks for your time.
You need source from Motorola and whatever company it was that Apple bought. You can try the Compendium thread for kernel links but as of now a new kernel is highly unlikely.
So then maybe we should look into writing our own? I mean if they can do it why can't we?

There's a thread over in the Atrix 4G forums where some people are working on a port from the Galaxy R kernel. You may want to follow that thread and offer your assistence there, because chances are that any progress that benefits the Atrix will benefit the Photon in the long run.

In theory that is sound, but the Atrix has a much newer kernel version than ours from the start (not sure how that happened with our device being more recent release). If you're planning to try, make sure that you have device protection or a good number of devices to work with....they've already hard bricked one or two from what I had seen.
What drivers are required, and I assume you mean for a 3.x kernel?

Unless you want to rev-eng a couple of parts of the kernel to make the GalaxyR kernel exaclty compatible with the Photon, you won't be able to use the stuff. Sorry.

maybe, jut maybe some day it will be leaked.
after the screwing Moto gave us he might as well post it. wtf are they gonna do? lock our damn phones?
My guess is it just never panned out and the guy didn't want to disappoint us. This was around the time of the Atrix leak, and that never amounted to anything, and a bunch of people got let down. It's my theory, which is far from concrete, that the leak included Photon files as well, that also never amounted to anything, but less was said here, so fewer people will be let down. I'm personally not worried. Come whatever may. My phone may not be able to do MMS or camcorder, or run Chrome or Swiftkey Flow, but I like it. It does the things I want it to. And it looks sexy as hell. I'd appreciate this mystery kernel or whatever, but I'm not gonna lose sleep if some mad scientist is holding out. Not saying that's what cybik is (I actually don't know much about him), just saying neither of the two extremes affect me much. And they shouldn't affect y'all either. If you're locked I'm sorry, that sucks, so is my brother, but you can run Holo Launcher/Locker and use either utter!, Maluuba, or Dragon Go! for voice commands/personal assistant, Notification Toggle for, well, the toggles, and Dolphin for your browser, and that puts you fairly close to Android 4. Motoblur can't keep a WiFi lock to save its life, but there are apps for that... I'm trying to test one on my wife's phone, but I'm not getting very good data from it. If you're unlocked, you have a lot of good choices as it is.
I may be an Atrix owner, but if the 2.6.39.4 kernel that is being dev'd for the Atrix is a success, couldn't you take the post-dev'd 2.6.39.4 kernel and port it to the Photon?
