[Q] Signal Problems. Caused by hardware problem? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear Forum members,
I know this is a very common problem/ question. But looking through the forum I was not able to sovle this problem myself.
So the problem is I have no reception neither in my flat nor at work. This makes my phone kind of useless.
I recently tried out several modems but could not achieve anything with that.
My gf has a I9100 as well with the same provider (O2, Germany). She has pretty good signal quality in our flat while my cell has none (even with exact same baseband phones next to each other).
So I can only guess that it is a hardware issue. What do you think?
Btw, outdoors of our building I have 100% signal H+ (I'm living kind of in the middle of Berlin).
Your help is very appreciated here. Cheers,
lennart
I have a I9100 with
CM 10.1
Build numer 20130112
Kernel 3.0.15-CM-gddc9ba7
[email protected] #1
Baseband

Seriously, this issue started when? It's just weird that you don't get any signal indoors, but your girl, with the same device as you, does.
If warranty isn't voided...I'd pay the store a visit.

Could there be a problem with the antenna? Would be worth the try to buy a new one?

Is your warranty voided? How long has it been since you got any signal at your place/work?

Did you change some part recently, like speaker/usb flex? Did you try to use the external antenna?

Don't even dream of messing with the antenna unless you're absolutely certain your warranty is no good (damage to the phone caused by normal use/misuse or warranty period expired).
If your warranty is good, use it.

Okay, full story: I bought the phone used 2 weeks ago from some guy. I tested it with him outside. Worked great Took it home and recognized that signal quality is bad. No warrenty at all. And I found that 1 of the 7 screws was missing. So I'm not the first who opened it I guess.
Maybe something was exchanged but I don't know. Think it would be of any good to exchange speaker/usb flex?
New ones are below 10€ so I could give it a try.
Thanks for your replies!

Anyone got any ideas? It's a brand new SGS2, just got it like an hour ago. I am using my girlfriend's exact same SGS2 to film this, and I plugged it in to the same USB port with the same cord and it worked fine.
Also don't mind my mother and brother yelling at their dog, or Iron Man playing in the background

If you got this from AT&T bring it back. It's defective. If you didn't get it from AT&T, you can always call 611 and have them ship out a warranty exchange. Good luck!

I did get it through an ATT store....ugh, what a hassle. It's actually my mother's phone, she used her upgrade on her account, then gave the phone to me. Wonder if she'll need to be there, I live 2 hrs away and we were going to leave to head home tonight......
Defective huh? Is this a common problem?

Yes, unfortunately the account owner must be there. You may get lucky, but I highly doubt it. I haveb't heard of this problem before, so I can't really say if it's a common issuse.

Hey, I just thought of something. See if your mom can call a corporate store in your area and have her give verbal authorization for you to exchange the device. You will need your driver's license. It's worth a shot. Keep me updated.

A minor annoyance, but at least you'll be able to replace it. Don't let this rare occurance discourage you. This is a great phone; the best I've owned yet, and I've had just about every phone on the market. Let me know how things worked out for you.

I agree on needing to go back. True stock having issues like that is very likely hardware.
Call the store before you go and explain the situation. Warned in advance they will probably be ok with just calling her up to get confirmation and ask the last 4 digits of her social security, if she's listed as primary account holder.

i think know what your issue is... i bet if you check your battery its not OEM and is a i9100 battery... Get a OEM battery and/or another one that has been confirmed to working with the i777 and this may fix this issue.
Same thing happens to me when i have my knock off ebay batteries in
Pop in the battery from your girlfriends phone and see if it still does it.
Looks an awful lot like the bootloop issue with i9100. I think the previous post is correct.
Sent from my Samsung GT-I9100
I swapped my battery into my GF's SGS2 and it did the same thing...looks like the battery IS the problem. Mine doesn't say "Near Field Communications" and it has a different serial # than hers. It does look OEM though.
That's pretty messed up. First I've heard of getting an international battery from an At&t store.
Kudos to joshuadjohnson22 and AntwanL for spotting that.
Sent from my páhhōniē
If it doesn't say NFC, it's an international battery and this is exactly what will happen.
How the hell you got an International battery from an AT&T store, I don't know - that's surprising... Was it an actual AT&T corporate-owned store or "mall kiosk" type third-party store?
i know some people that will go to AT&T and ask to try something on a new phone, in fact when i was getting boot loop he told me to go to AT&T and toss that battery in... maybe someone did this and decided to swap the batteries? Its the only thing i can think of

I'd call them now to have them put one to the side for you. I'd hate to make that drive and then have them be out of the phone!
We just got back from the ATT store, they replaced the phone for me. He told me it was in fact an international battery. He remembered me from last night so they didn't even have to call her to verify the account, heh.
Anyway, problem solved

Is it possible to remove this NFC battery requirement so that I can use a standard non-NFC battery?
These NFC batteries are hard to find, basically impossible to find outside of the US. I have the same issue with using the otherwise identical i9100 battery. Using the battery is fine, but once the phone is plugged into the USB it goes into the boot loop.

Need help. Other people cant hear me talking!

I just got my replacement digitizer and LCD screen. Installed everything according to the guide in our forum. Screen works fine except now I think something may be wrong with my mic. Does anyone know which connector is for our microphone. I just double checked all the connections and they seem to be in correctly. I dont know what else to do.

Not sure if this is helpful or not - but this person on another forum was complaining that he took his phone to sprint and they replaced his digitizer. After he left the store he called people and they couldn't hear him talk - something about his mic not working after sprint repaired it.
He ended up getting a new phone from sprint which in your case doesn't help. However maybe while replacing the screen you accidentally hit the microphone or something? Maybe since sprint did it also, its an easy thing to do.
you just unplugged the wire to the mic. lol or the connection isn't solid. btw, THIS THREAD WAS FROM LAST YEAR! lmao! but good job on searching. hahaha. but open it up and look for the mic and plug it back in? OR DO WHAT I DO, USE BLUETOOTH! I personally have a SOUND ID 6 SERIES! IT WORKS GREAT! best on the market! well, kindof anyway! lol. they were stupid and only put 2.1 bluetooth on it instead of 3.0 or 4.0. they were playing stupid.

[Q] S3 wont switch on, charge :/

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S3 that does not switch on, or charge. Full disclosure; I bought it second hand in full cognisance of this fact*, but I really thought it was a software glitch or something I could fix with a hard reset. The reason for this is the guy I bought it from swears blind it's not water-damaged, which I've verified by checking the moisture sensors. So, I tried a hardware reset (volume up+power button+home button) but nothing. So, does anyone know what it could be other than water-damage**?
*Yes, I'm aware it was stupid. But it was really cheap, and I have very poor impulse control. I'm like a cat, you can't dangle something like that in front of me and not expect me to pounce on it ;p
**Screen appears to be in perfect condition.
Take the battery out and look at the model number....im worried your the victim of a chinese dud!

Nope, it's got Samung logos and all that; it says the SSN is I9300GSMH, which as far as I'm aware is the real deal. I've also checked the IMEI, and it corresponds to a real SGS3. So what is wrong with it?

As previously discussed in another thread, the chinese fakes look the real deal, all branding, samsung logos, model numbers etc match up to actual s3 devices, but the hardware is fake 540x960 display, 512mb ram etc....seriously worth looking into buddy

Impossible to tell unless it switches on though.
I've compared it to the (apparently) real S3 in this video, and while everything seems to match up with mine, one thing is the microSD card slot and SIM tray have weird blue windows in them, which looks a bit suspicious. Did anyone else's phone arrive with these? It looks like they're replacements.
I don't want to sound too depressing but some of us have had our phones completely die for no reason after a few months. Mine's currently at the service centre and others who have had theirs back say that the circuit board was replaced. Mine didn't get wet, or dropped, it just stopped working.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
That *is* mildly depressing but if it comes to that I suppose all I can do is return it or sell it on as spares, try to get the money back :/ (all while hoping it *is* genuine)
(The circuit boards are really expensive to replace, also.)
Update: (like anyone's interested, but anyway) got my USB jig today, plugged it in following the method on this forum, but nothing. Not really surprised tbh.
Going to try a new battery next, but seriously doubt it'll come back to life at this stage. Thanks for the suggestions and comments anyway, and if any users have anything not covered already, just post it below. Thnx
Thought I'd update this again to report the lack of success of a battery switch....again, not really surprising.
I also need to reiterate the point that mine arrived with what looks like a replacement SIM tray/sdcard slot rig, such as those you see on eBay. I'm not sure whether to take this as suspicious or...what, and am now just ready to give up entirely on the phone. Any advice before I do this would be welcome
Do you mean those translucent blue stickers on the sim and micro sd slots? My phone came back from the service centre with these too (which definitely weren't there when I took it in)

Is My SII a Prototype or a Fake Phone?

Hi guys I was having issues connecting my new SII to my att network. I checked the imei using the *#06# and it came back with the generic samsung imei of 00499010640000. When I went to check behind the battery cover it also showed the same imei printed there.
This seems shady as I know that imei is the generic samsung imei when the efs folder gets corrupted. It is worrysome to see the same imei on the back of the phone as I think this means this phone is fake or a prototype.
I bought the phone on ebay from a chinese seller and I've already been refunded my money and told to keep the device by ebay since it doesn't work and they also believe it is fake.
What are your thoughts? The phone never connects to 3g but it will connect over gprs and load pages. However it won't make calls. Very strange. By the way I've flashed stock gb ics and jb and they all work with exception of the modem.
Thanks

Interesting... This is a second time someone is posting a photo of this design (battery terminals on the left side, SD card is by the SIM, antenna connector is in a different place) that doesn't look like the "standard" i9100. And both times there are questions about the IMEI...
This is the other topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2151566
If it's a knock off it's a good knock off.

It doesn't have to be a knock-off... But it could be some sort of a prototype or a development model. There is no way in hell this phone is from a regular production run - not with the IMEI sticker like this. And the hardware design differences are quite significant from a standard i9100. True, all manufacturers always leave their options open to change the specs or design without notice, but how many people have actually seen this variant IRL or even on the photos? "Fake" or not, this is definitely an oddball...
Could this be the chinese variant of the gt i 9100?

Is it possible to fix this phone?
You could but you won't, it's not strictly legal.
You've been refunded so keep that device and do whatever you want with it, who knows, maybe you'll need some parts one day.
Now focus on getting an I9100, the real thing
You could also contact samsung and see what they have to say about a what-is-seems-to-be legit I9100 with a generic IMEI (Branded under the battery).
