[Q] Google Services Drains Battery - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Since I changed to JB my battery is being drained by google services. I've tried turning off location services, all of google now, and everything that is using google to sync except for mail. I haven't found a solution anywhere online. I've also deleted my exchange and other mail accounts and I still have the problem.
I'm using MeanBean 2.3 and it also did the same thing on MB 1.4.
Any ideas?

I am also seeing this and sometimes Maps or Poynt do the same thing as well. If I look in my power history it will show GPS ON as a full blue line. I also see a solid blue line in the wake portion sometimes when the phone has been sleeping. Both issues will cause the battery to drain very quickly. If I don't catch them in time, my battery won't make it all day. If I go a day without seeing these, the battery lasts all day with plenty to spare. A quick reboot fixes them but I never had these issues before Jelly Bean. My wife has an EVO LTE too and sees these issues as well. Anyone know what is causing these issues? Neither of us have turned on Google Now yet fearing that will make it worse.

Did you do a factory reset after the upgrade to jelly bean? Many reported that helping.

No, but my wife just got hers and I updated to Jelly Bean before installing or setting up the phone. Guess I will try factory reset after installing Jelly Bean. Thanks for the help!

I did super wipe (factory reset) last night with clean install and today I'm not having issues yet

It didn't work. Google services turned on again and keeps my phone awake and is draining the battery. Does anyone else have an exchange account? I just deleted mine to see if that might help.

In case anyone ever comes upon this thread and wants an answer, I think the problem is with exchange. I made it manual DL and the Google services stayed on but didn't drain the battery. Reset, location, and other changes didn't seem to help.

Maybe exchange cuz I don't have the issue...its not even on the history

I am having the same problem, but I don't have exchange. Just got my phone a week ago, not rooted, completely stock. Today was the first day that the battery abnormally drained, with google services using 50%. Not sure what changed or what happened. Trying to do some research into this as there seems to be a lot of questions out there, but haven't found any answers yet.

I am having this problem every so often also. The phone stays awake 100% of the time due to the google services. I kill it a couple times and usually it stops for awhile. Very annoying, still looking for a fix.

The best way to figure out what is draining your battery is to install Better Battery Stats from the play store. Let it run in the background for a day or two and then check out partial wake locks and alarms. See if there is an app or process that is running out of control. Check all of your settings for syncing gmail, chrome, news and weather, etc. If you can't find some app that is keeping your device awake when it should be resting, then it could just be the phone.

Is there any REAL solution for this issue?
"Google Services" keeps my phone awake 100% of the time sometimes and I get maybe 4 hours of bat till completely dead. I've tried turning off sync, gps, mail, etx still does it. I think it really the Play Store but I cant be sure.

Turn off Autosync then turn it on again and force a full sync, then reboot, I've read somewhere I think in the sense 5 port thread about something like this and I think scottspa or Finz posted this as a solution, try it and let us know...

I've been having hella issues with this recently. Some of the fixes out there work some of the time. Best one I've found is to sign out of Google EVERYTHING, wipe caches, reboot, then resign in. Even sometimes that won't release the wakelock. Yesterday for instance I had to do that, then take it a step further and delete my data from everything with the word Google on it and do 2 reboots before it would go the hell away.

disable
I disable mine.

Use titanium backup. Make the services and play store user apps. Then use greenify on them.

I am running MeanBean with latest firmware. I had this issue yesterday and I tried your fix. So far today, google services has only used 2%. I am curious to see if it stays that way or if the issue will come back.
Thanks

clearing cache and delvik cache seems to work for a little while that it just starts again ok. I only staredt having this issue about 2 weeks ago. That's why I think its the Play Store cause that's when the Play Store updated. Also rebooting seems to relieve the situation temporarily. Its just a pain in you don't look at your phone for a few hours notice 75 percent of your battery is gone.

I had the Google services drain too. I was looking high and low for the cause. Finally solved mine by going to Quick Event app, clicked setting icon (top right), set both Default Reminder and Default Duration to none.. That solved my problem.

So I did a few things and have not had a problem in a week(ish) now. I cleared cache and dalvik cache. I also forced a sync then turned off sync tried to sync again then turned it back on.
I have not had a problem since. In fact I left this phone sitting all weekend from sat morning to this morning and it only used 22% battery. (there was NO use by me)
Just incase anybody is wondering I am on the latest Mean Bean with over clocking and over volt.

[Q] Gmail App Freezes Phone ???

What can be the reason that when I enter gmail appon my phone, after 8 monts of normal use, it blocks my phone - screen blinks few times and than it turn of after some time !!!
Lack of information .

But this is what is happening, I don't know what to write more. It just shows 8 emails of inbox, I cant scroll, open or do anything with these. Only way to leave Gmail App is to click home button. Sometimes even that is not working. From time to time it looks like it refresh whole screen from left to right with same 8 emails. The phone is top part near camera becoming hotter during this. I am running official 2.3.4 GB.
First check if process Gapps is running or not.. Then..
Try resetting Gmail... Go to settings-> Apps -> all -> Gmail.. then clear cache/clear data... Launch Gmail again...
I've got pretty much the same problem on my S2, though it behaves a little bit different; the left to right refresh/animation is going totally crazy and when I try to leave the application using the home key it almost always opens itself again. Sometimes it doesn't refresh like crazy, instead the Gmail UI is totally unresponsive. I am running a CF-rooted stock 2.3.5 ROM (XWKI8).
EDIT: I've tried resetting Gmail, it didn't make any difference at all..
So, I am not alone. Hope someone will help. Cleared all cache and data settings, all the same. Even was taking battery of the phone for 10 mins - no result.
Is any other Google Apps running ok??. Can you sign onto gtalk properly?
What about YouTube.. Google reader etc... I am asking because.. Some background services need to be running properly for Google apps
Very very strange, my phone has started having this very issue as of today, too.
I've tried deleting the app's data, resets, battery removal, and even uninstalling and reinstalling the app (rooted).
I have no idea where to go from here, so I've since frozen the app..
Edit: Might be a known issue now:
http://lifehacker.com/5895595/gmail...oid-for-many-heres-how-to-get-your-email-back
I'm having exactly the same issue. Started yesterday.
Could be related to the fact that the Google search app was updated yesterday? Or the fact that I changed my Google password. Other Google apps fine
having this exact same issue, dont know what happened, been completely fine before yesterday :S
edit: im on a Nexus S but this post came when searching for a solution.
Good to know that I am not the only one having this problem. Let's just hope that Google releases a fix soon!

Same problem here and I have a Galaxy Player 5. At first i thought it was because I flashed a custom rom , but this only started happening recently. Guess I have to use the stock email app in the meantime....bleh...
EDIT: checked out the gmail app from the market. clicked on user reviews and sort by newest. everyone is having this issue.
EDIT 2: the issue has been resolved, for me at least

Google apps and stock browser issues after ota update.

Just curious how many people are having issues with stock Google apps and the stock browser after the ota update. The Gmail and maps will get stuck on a white screen as does the stock browser and the play store will just lock up on whatever screen it was currently on. Google wallet will freeze during the unlocking your device notice. These are the only ones I have found so far but I had none of these issues before the ota update. A phone restart will fix it for a period of time but I'm currently having to restart my phone 2 times a day to get the apps to work properly again.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I also forgot to add that during the restart after the screen turns off you can will change the ring volume up and down and hear it change for 2-3 seconds before the phone actually does restart. I noticed this when I had my Bluetooth headset still connected and it was not telling me it was disconnected for at least 4-5 seconds after the screen turned off unlike before the update when it was no more than a second.

Mine does this as well, the only "fix" I have found for it is rebooting the phone. Then it works for a few days until it randomly decides to freeze again.
I was having the same problems where the browser will be a white screen and not work. I went twrp and wipe cache/dalvik cache and haven't had a problem since

After the update! The stock browser doesn't highlight the the URL address when tapped like before...Instead we have to manually delete the URL to search something else or press the little X after tapping on the URL.
Wtf!? Yeah count me in too. I just did a restart and it didn't fix problem. Gwallet still in notification bar saying initializing.

Also been having the same problem since updating, most noticable with the browser just being a white screen. Tried wiping cache & dalvik cache again, doesn't seem to help. Stock ROM with S-OFF. Surprised I haven't seen more mentions of this problem, but perhaps it's not widespread?
Well as I've learned over my time at xda updates are always catch 22's. That's why I choose to wait and read users feedback on how the latest ota is functioning. However none if this is revelant to your issues just figured I'd post it for future reference. Also have you guys tried a full wipe of your current rom? After you make a backup of your data of course to see if that will help ??

Yeah...I was having the same problem after the ota, but after a couple of reboots things started to work right.

I wound up here after searching for this error, which just started with me yesterday with the browser (stock). It just displays a white screen when I try to use it.
I've had the latest update (flashed with 1.22.651.3 odexed ROM from xHausx and firmware from Captain Throwback) about a week now and this just started happening yesterday.
Yesterday I somehow got it to work again by clearing the Internet cache and then I performed a search from the Google search bar and all was well. I was thinking at the time that it was stuck on a particular page and that this got around it. But that fix isn't working for me today, so I'm going to try to clear dalvik/cache from twrp as recommended here and see where that gets me.
It's good to know I'm not the only one though... I wonder if there's anything else more specific we all have in common since we seem to be a fairly small subset. Maybe we all flashed the Odexed update for example?
EDITED TO ADD: Appears to affect Gmail too. And possibly several other Google apps as mentioned here and in other threads. Since there was a Gmail update I did yesterday, I'm going to try to uninstall that as mentioned in this other thread I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810829

NOT helpful at all since it affects not only the stock browser but other Google apps as well.
Refer back to my original post which I updated with additional information.
I've found if I reboot and never use the stock browser I don't have the white screen problem. I set maxthon as the default and act like the stock browser doesn't exist.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I reverted back to the previous version of Gmail yesterday hoping that would fix the problem but it still happened. This morning when I clicked an email notification from my status bar, Gmail did the white screen thing and needed to be shut down manually. Just to verify that this and the browser incident were related, I tried to launch the stock browser and it too was white screen.
So those of you suggesting to install an alternate browser to get around this issue need to understand that this is a lot more widespread than the browser alone. For me, both my Gmail and Google Offers were white screens this morning upon trying to launch them so it definitely appears to affect all Google apps.
Yeah this happens to me as well. Its really bad now. Nothing fixes. It does it on all the roms with newer OTA for me. Only two roms will work for me without this problem. I have tried everything. Wiped everything, Reflashed, Checked my sd card, factory reset, you name it. It even does it on restored roms that didn't have the problem before. I don't know what to do....
A developer told me to try and manual flash boot.img through fastboot but I'm not even sure how to do that. Need to read up on it.
I have had the issue to wear when I am trying to open the browser app, it will actually freeze the entire phone until I hit the home button repeatedly in play store will not load anything until I fully restart the phone I've tried fixing for missions do a nandroid restore nothing seems to work

All google apps hang every few days

I'm on rooted stock (latest OTA) and every few days all of my google apps will stop responding (Maps, Wallet, search, etc.). I can open them, but they never get to the main screen of the app (just a blank screen). Rebooting it solves the issue. I haven't noticed any correlation with other apps running. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I've finally got my phone the way I like it and I'd hate to hard reset if I don't have to.
Thanks!
I just noticed my gmail did that this morning. It might be because of the recent app update. Either way, it's only happened to me once so far, so keeping my fingers crossed.
I've done a reset to fix this and it did.....for a while but now it's back. I have to reboot or Google apps won't open fully, they just hang.
I have the same issue with Gmail, navigation and sometimes the web browser. A reboot fixes the hang but who wants to do that all the time.

Try getting the logcat for the event. You can use "alogcat" from market. Search on how to use logcat ( it's color coded for obvious events). Magic bit ( "self" changing) events are more difficult. "Autostarts" from market will let you see your spinlocks, so if any unrelated app has the screen or some other resource then you've got the cause.
Uninstalling the gmail updates had no effect. Happened 3 times in the last 24 hours. Getting very frustrating.

I have the same issue as well with gmail loading to a white screen. I've tried doing a force stop but that didn't help, which made no sence when a reboot fixes it.
Mine started doing this too, only started about a week ago. I always have to reboot too, very annoying.

Are you using a custom launcher? I was using Apex launcher and it worked awesome for the longest time. Recently my gapps started locking up as well so I uninstalled Apex and haven't had a lockup since. I did NOT reboot after uninstalling Apex, and the issue has cleared up.... Give it a shot if you're using a custom launcher.
I am running the stock with the OTA update (no custom ROM or root) and I'm seeing this as well. Good thing is, this has nothing to do with your custom ROMs. Bad thing is, this is a real issue that seem to be affecting everyone!

Just do as huludical has said here. So far this is the only fix that has been working. Something with the Wallet fix in the OTA starting screwing up the way many other Google apps communicate with their servers. By disabling/uninstalling Wallet and clearing the data/cache for Google Services Framework and then a quick reboot and the issue is no more.
Granted, this means, that once again we are unable to use Wallet but that's a small price to pay when the alternative is having Gmail, Maps, Chrome etc etc freezing up every day or so.
Is there an update to this situation? I am UN rooted and this is happening to me

I will give that a try. I cant figure out what it is downloading because it seems to be only a few Kb at a time. If I sit and watch mydatamonitor I can see it downloading about 5-15 k every 20 to 30 seconds. At the same time I can see the network indicator switching from 3g to h+ over and over. I thought it was rilj at first but it doesnt show as a wakelock at all. The first day I noticed this it had used about 20mb while I was at work. I didnt notice it because the phone was plugged in all day at work, but started losing battery fast as soon as I unplugged getting ready to leave. Maybe I am just being long winded but then again maybe some of this will help figure out what is going on. As I said tonight I will reinstall and see what happens by morning.

This data use just seems to keep going. It definitely keeps going long after all my apps are restored either by play store or with TiBU. Unfortunately I didnt get time to try the 10-17 release last night to see if leaving it on all night would settle it down. My data monitor shows the use for google play store and not google play services. It is maddening that is keeps using such small bits of data but does it so often the phone never sleeps.

thanks to everyone who tried to help. I finally had a chance to flash a jb rom again and once again data use by google play store. I looked in the log and I kept finding an entry for tokaplot widget for checking license and then it failing. It seems for whatever reason once in a while in ics and about every ten seconds in jb it was trying to check the license on the widget I bought quite some time ago and it would fail. I uninstalled the widget and so far no more constant data use. Hope that did it. Drove me nuts finding it. And thanks to all the devs in the gs2 forums that reading their posts taught me how to find the culprit.

[Q] Battery Draining Overnight - Android OS 44% of Usage

Hey Guys I am troubleshooting a battery life issue for my boss' wife. Her brand new S4 is draining battery way too fast overnight if not plugged into the charger.
When I pull up her Battery Usage at the top every time is Android OS with a whopping 40-45% of usage.
I have disabled Caller ID, double checked she only have one account synced on her phone and its not happening every 15 minutes or anything. I set her screen brightness to auto (though I know this wouldn't show up as Android OS usage). She is using stock firmware from Verizon and has not really installed much short of a couple games.
What do you think could be causing Android OS to be sucking up so much juice? My Note 2 only shows Android OS as using 10% over 1 1/2 days of usage
Turn off all location reporting stuff under maps, and also download the play store v4.1.10 apk if you are still on 4.1.6. Play store v 4.1.6 has a known battery drain issue and that is why there is a newer one out.

Also removing the ongoing wifi thing in teh notification pull down will help as well since it scans for wireless networks like every 4 or 5 seconds. I'm pretty sure she would have to be rooted to be able to flash the MOD.

OK installed Play Store update and rebooting now. She is not rooted, unlocked, nor does she have a custom ROM installed so I'd have to root it if I wanted to add in that mod. This seems like something that should be fixable without a root tho, right?
Thank you for your help btw

Got it. Ok well I did the Play Store update and the location services. I also installed 2x Battery Saver to shut down her wifi when in sleep mode. I'll know if that took care of it tomorrow morning when she brings it in again.
Thanks again for the responses guys. I just know that out of the box this thing shouldn't be draining so fast when its idling!
Its a friggin' Verizon thing. Again they have to be a pain in the a$$ and feel they need to do something to feel like they are better then other carriers by adding and subtracting stuff. The ongoing wifi notification and the removing of the wifi and a couple other toggles in the notification toggles was asinine.
Plus, the battery drain issue with the play store has nothing to do with the phone but a bug from google that was fixed with an update.

Oh. My. God. You are my savior!
Billions of threads were read by me, dozens of battery software were installed by me to analyze battery drain but there were no result unitl I found this thread and you message. A had 70-80% "Android OS" of battery usage and that was because of god damn Play Store 4.1.6 installed on my GT-i9500 and it didn't update for some reason (any suggestions why?). After I've downloaded new version from androidpolice, everything seems to become perfect.
Thank you very much for your message, dude. I owe you.

No problem... glad I could help. The reason it didn't update is because Google never pushed it out. They knew there was an issue and put a fix out pretty fast but you had to download it and install manually. I don't know why.
