I am really wondering if the photon is running at 30 or less FPS. I notice a bad slow down even in the boot up sprint 4g animation. I also notice that the homescreen seems to lag pretty bad sometimes. Swiping through screens should produce no lag and with comparing models such as the Epic4g touch and Evo they don't suffer from this at all.
I know when the Evo, the original one was first released, that was a initial problem. I don't personally use what they call blur but even with 3rd party launchers I am noticing slow downs that shouldn't be happening on a phone with a dual core processor.
Don't get me wrong, I like the phone but it just doesn't seem to be as fast as other phones when it comes to day to day use. I'm watching videos from the Epic4g touch and it's buttery smooth. The Evo 3d was very smooth too. I retired that though.
Anybody else wondering the reason for the slow downs on this phone?
How many apps do you have installed, what mods if any are you running, we need details.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
45 apps and mods or root at the moment.
I was having this problem. Then I realized it was juice defender that was making this happen. I suspect that switching the radios on and off is what causes it to lag.
Sent from my Photon
I downloaded Fps test from the market, now im not sure how accurate it is but I get 59-60 fps
The results show that but the problem is lag is prevalent in some parts of the phone. For instance the camera app lags right after taking a pic. Watch how the pic shrinks right after the pic is snapped. Then go into the gallery and try to pinch to make the pic zoom in. Its horribly laggy and choppy. Also swiping homescreens it will lag sometimes. I have replaced it with quickpic and the launcher with go launcher. Just really wish I could just keep using the stock apps
I agree, the Photon seems to be very choppy with scrolling through home pages. But i don't notice it when I'm scrolling on web pages, and switching between apps is still very fast. Not to mention Google maps flies on this thing. Id love to hear some suggestions as well. BTW, I'm using LP+
I read an article the other day that stated that the Tegra 2 has a secondary arm 7 core that is low clocked and takes care of background syncing and audio and things like that especially when the device is asleep it allows the Tegra main cores to go into deep sleep saving battery. This combined with the radio saver which puts the radio to sleep, I think is causing the startup lag and other lag, the only time I ever get lag is when I turn the screen on, I used to noticed this same type of lag on my epic when I used set CPU and would set an alternate power setting when the screen would be off and I would lock it at 200 or 400 mhz and the lag would appear upon turning the screen on, then it would clear up when full power was restored. Im assuming the hand off is the problem from the slower core to the normal cores.

I definitely agree that it is dual core related. These new dual core phones aren't being used fully due to battery savings. It makes me wonder why we need the dual core if one is dormant most of the time.
I think blur needs some serious optimization to make it run smoother. I was thinking about switching to the epic touch 4g but it looks like they are having all types of issues. The sad thing is I could get the phone for less than 100 on upgrade.
I hope Motorola starts really focusing on the updates to make the phone run smoother.

I just loaded the newest unreleased build 198_6 and the phone seems to run a little less laggy. This helped with wifi and the homescreen scrolling. I still see slight lag but I guess I will have to live with that. The phone seems a little more snappy.
I do agree some tweaks are needed. We really need a fully unlocked bootloader so the Rome will come. Losing 4g with root right now is a hurdle that most wont mess with.

Ran a Nenamarks2 today and got 24.5 FPS.
This may have been mentioned here before, but I didn't find any threads about it.
I have been using the AT&T Note since about a week before it was available. I absolutely love my Note and it's the best phone I have owned. Lately, though, the laggy performance has been getting to me. There are little delays everywhere: Unlocking the screen, scrolling between home screens, opening messaging, etc.
Truth is, I never realized how bad it was until I started up my Skyrocket and started using it. The difference is night and day. I tried a few custom launchers, but the results are the same. I suppose it could be attributed to the higher resolution display, but the delays add up and get to be frustrating.
Seriously considering going back to my Skyrocket until ICS comes out for the Note. Anyone else have any insight? Is there something I'm missing? I'm pretty sure it's not any of the apps I have installed and I'm on stock ROM. I did notice that the available RAM is always low, even after a "clean RAM". Maybe that contributes to the overall sluggishness.

Haven't seen any other threads about lag around here either. But mine doesn't have the issues you discuss. OC and clean off the bloat and use a new launcher. Install a custom rom. If that doesn't satisfy you, get the international version or wait for the sgs III.

Mine was bad. Remove most system apps. Nearly everything Samsung and att. Install custom launcher, remove touch wiz, run support charger scripts, Flash custom ROM then OC KERNEL, done.

Thanks, guys. I was hoping not to go the custom ROM route, with ICS right around the corner, but it may prove necessary. Seems like it has the same bloatware as the Skyrocket, so with both at stock, I don't understand why the Skyrocket is so much smoother with so much more free RAM.
International Note isn't an option. No way I could give up LTE. I get 40-50 Mbps download consistently where I'm at.
Note all note created equal

TSF Launcher, Launcher pro & Go Launcher. TSF has no lag, Launcher pro & Go are strange.. I'll explain.
I had my first Note, and the only Launcher pro had no lag, and not on my third note, it's go launcher that has no problems, and launcher pro lags a bit. TSF however is lag free. Dev support for TSF is terrible though.
I went through notes because of hardware issues, one the speaker busted, and the other had really bad color banding on dark screens.
I'm running go launcher, right now with little to no lag.
1.5ghz dualcore snapdragon s3 processors in both the skyrocket and note. The note has higher resolution which causes the phone to lag slightly more than the skyrocket. That is why the Exynos processor in the international is favored. If you dont want to flash a rom, try using a launcher from market. Im using launcher pro and theres less lag compared to touchwiz. Also uses less rams compared to tw.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
I'd like to see an overclocked Snapdragon Note and overclocked Exynos Note go head-to-head. See which is the better performer at top overclock.
Even after Da_g's overclock I was a little perturbed over lag when scrolling with multiple widgets. I couldn't shake the thought of ICS's gpu acceleration.
I'm now running Saurom RC4 and the 1000hp V6 Supercharger script (I'm a noob, took me about half an hour of reading and execution tonight) and it's now running very smoothly. I'll have to see wait till tomorrow if the battery will improve any with the super script but right now it's junk. ( 3.5/ 4 hours screen time, which isn't bad if I except I'm between work contracts right now, so lots of free time and use this thing as my primary device all day).
I've also reinstalled Go Launcher EX after previously turfing it over lag, I'm now loving it.

So you're running STOCK with Go Launcher and you have less lag then with Touchwiz?
I had Go Launcher initially, but I don't remember it being less laggy. I did experience an extra battery drain from it, though.
I have been using my Skyrocket for a few days and it's incredibly fast compared to my note. I compared them side-by-side last night, launching the same apps and performing the same tasks and sometimes the Note would have a 1-2 second delay, where the Skyrocket would be instant.
Love the idea of the Note and the hardware, but the lag drives me nuts. I was hoping ICS would come out soon and the GUI hardware acceleration would fix it, but it looks like the update will be delayed, as usual.
you want 100% no lag, TSF Launcher.
Got my note last weekend and it has been pretty laggy at times. Last night I froze all the AT&T and Samsung bloatware. Didn't really expect any difference. I unlocked my phone for the first time and instantly noticed how smooth it was. The stock browser is much quicker than before and Touchwiz is now super smooth. I am rooted on stock kernal and ROM.
Is there a list somewhere of all the apps and processes that you can delete and stop from running? I'm all stock using Go Launcher. I wouldn't say I'm bothered by lag but I do get it occasionally. In total I have 27 applications listed under 'running'. 262MB RAM used, 354MB Free. This is immediately after reboot. Before I rebooted (calendar wouldn't open) I had about 100MB RAM free. So apparently I need to be sure to reboot occasionally to clear RAM, but I know there's much more I can do. I want to stay stock for now at least as I've only had this a week.

something a custom rom could fix?

just waiting on V2 before I do my first custom rom install
If your note is laggy I would do a reset, mine got real laggy about a week after I got it,the camera would actually take 10-15 seconds to snap a photo,I reset mine about 3 weeks ago and just ran side by side test with my skyrocket, some apps the skyrocket opens a flash quicker some apps the note opens a flash quicker, the note camera is actually faster then the skyrocket camera now.

Yeah, I've been going through the same thing. I end up going back to Sense launcher because the lag bothers me that much. I'm using Blackout ROM for AT&T version.
I have even changed all the settings to FAST for animation and performance and it works great but the lag eventually comes back and is noticeable.
Also been using Nova prime but haven't really noticed much lag between screens. Get the occasional lag (but nothing major) in the app drawer.

The same here.
With Sense, there is no much lag, but it is not very smooth. (it seems to low FPS, but no lag)
With Nova, some transitions perfect, other very laggy. Little better with Apex, but still laggy.
Waiting for an official CM10.1
I hope it solves this problem.
I have paid a lot for this phone, and I tought it would perfect smooth. There is enough hardware in the box..
Just happy is just not my phone. Went back to sense launcher because it annoyed me that much lol

i had the same problem and figured out why, first you need to go to developer options-----> advanced and check force 2d gpu rendering
and the try unchecking the animation option...no lag what so ever since
can't remember having lag with the vanilla HTC sense build when using Apex, but I surely don't have any lag issues on it using CM10.1
My phone isn't rooted or anything and since I've been using Android I've used Launcher Pro on every Android phone I've owned. The one thing that I do notice with the One X+ is that Launcher Pro constantly crashes. Never had a problem like this on any other device.

I just rooted and installed a ROM last night and went with Apex
I have made a vid to show the micro lags.
This is Apex Launcher Pro. With Nova is worse.
It happens with every Rom I have installed. From Stock, Insertcoin (sense and senseless), revolution, Cm10, Cm10.1.... all of them
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLaCq5weoU4&feature=youtu.be
Best in 720p
First at real time, after that, 25% speed to see it better. With the Hox in hand feels worse than vid...
Im paranoid?
With "Sense Launcher", and "Next Launcher" this not happens. But I dont like neither of them..
This didn't happen with Nexus4, I would like to be the same in Hox+..
Thanks

I don't know what is causing it. It is really annoying, maybe it is the Tegra processor? My old S3 and S2 never lagged with any launcher.
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2
I wonder if it is due to the aggressive governor settings HTC used. They are intended to mitigate battery drain, but, they can cause stuttering in games as well.
I ended up using Renovate Gaming Boost to fix the issue in various games that I play, but, I generally turn it (Gaming Boost) off unless I am gaming. There is a thread for the Renovate Gaming Boost in the HTC One X forum and the Jelly Bean version is compatible with HTC One X+ also.
It unlocks the GPU from the CPU so the GPU clocks stay at high levels even if CPU scales down. It also changes the 'on demand' governor settings. You can find out exactly what it changes in the main thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783260
Not sure if this will have any effect on the launcher lag. If the issue is a result of the governor settings and/or GPU clock scaling down, then this should fix it. However, the downside is that your battery life will decrease as your CPU and GPU will run at higher average clock speeds. Root is required to get any benefit from the application.

Installed on my Stock but rooted prime now. Appears to eliminate all the stock browser lag I used to have. It's now blazing fast, and I can scroll while its still loading stuff which I was never able to do before. Holy mother of all fixes it seems like:good:
I installed it last night on my prime. It does lot for my prime. I also did some of the early investigation to what was really being fixed by this hack. I am glad Cyanogen has confirmed some of my theories. If you are rooted I would highly recommend installing it.

Tried this and also read up a bit on what it does. Unfortunately I don't think what this tries to do is an issue on the Prime. This basically makes sure there is always random data available for apps from a location that will block if there's none available. However, when I ran a command that was constantly consuming all the random data (cat /dev/random > /dev null), I could see that the random data was getting consumed but it wasn't causing a perceptibly adverse effect on anything else.
I also just ran the app for a while, and I didn't notice anything being more responsive. It will consume extra battery though.
Take look at my write up on the Google bug. That is what the author originally thought the problem was. What is probably going on is kernel lock contention due to the code that generates entropy when the pool is depleted.
Installed it just now, no discernible effect. Quick reboot... Chameleon launcher, app switching, Chrome, all smooth as butter. I am gobsmacked! I think have a feeling this works well for me because of the number of connections made by Chameleon, logged in accounts (I have 9 accounts logged in at all times) and apps syncing that I regularly exhaust the block device. Add to our already slow IO, any blocking at the kernel level will be multipled.
Going to monitor it some more and report back on battery life and any further observations. Thanks for the share! :good:

I have done some benchmarks and it makes no difference to those whatsoever. This bothers me because I can't understand if this is supposed to do nothing, how does my device run orders of magnitude snappier all the time while running this compared with intermittent lag that I usually get (for example: waiting 1-3 seconds for the recent app list to show normally vs instant with this mod) . The CPU governor can't be it: I set cpu to max and use the performance governor and I still have massive lag. I have tried numerous things for I/O: different schedulers, different mount options to reduce writes on reads and improve write speed ie. noatime, nodiratime, discard, and nothing works! I have tried to narrow down a single process that causes the lag, no dice. I know I only have just under 2 days of testing behind me and yes I only have anecdotal evidence but I have been running this a long enough time with absolutely zero lag that I can't say it makes no difference for me. I'll continue testing but so far it has been too long to be placebo IMO.

Haha benchmarks dont equate to real life performance. Benchmark scores have been decreasing since gingerbread even though the new software makes everything faster
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
The reason why your device *feels* snappier is because constant I/O activity ensures the CPU will remain at rather high clocks, producing the effect of a smoother experience at the expense of massive battery drain. The explanation of increasing the entropy does nothing by itself, you could cause a lot of I/O activity to anywhere in the emmc and it would produce a similar effect.

I was skeptical as many are about this. I did not see any improvement in Quadrant scores. I installed this for one reason only and it works!
I stream .m4v movies from my NAS drive to my TV through my TP. Before this was installed I would have problems with stuttering no matter what player I tried. Sometimes I would have problems right away, and depending on the player/movie I could watch about an hour before the stuttering/lag begins. I have been beyond frustrated, especially since my wife has an IPad 2 that plays the same movies flawlessly.
Since installing this I can now play my movies without a hitch. I don't know why, but it works. I only use it for this purpose as my other testing showed no major difference. I turn it off when I am not watching movies as I have read that the battery drain is increased.
I streamed 3 movies this weekend without a problem and 2 of them were back to back and I only used approx 35% battery.

+ 1 here. Running last JB update + rooted, wasn't able to play heavy games since the update to JB when we lost the OC kernel from ICS, games were laggy, freezing, almost unplayable. After seeder.apk installation, <i am again able to play NOVA 3, Batman, Spiderman, Asåhalt 7, without any lag and high FPS, seems even better than when my Prime was on ICS OC to 1600. I don't care about what people say but what I experience o preformance, this is something I've learnt after all those years using Android devices. Give it try expecially if you run heavy apps. Battery is a bit worse, but who cares when the prime isnot overheating and run a lot better.

All in all jelly bean is nicer looking and snappy when scrolling where it may not have been with ICS however I've tried 3 different roms now and am experiencing a system wide lag when performing basic transitions like going back in an app or clicking a link within it, even typing like I am right now it occasionally misses a beat then speeds back up. Its to the point where it takes almost 10 seconds to click on a link in facebook before the next action progresses. I would assume its the cpu or ram but not sure how to address the issue. Any help would be appreciated

Turns out it was a memory issue (obviousely). It seems inherent in the initial build for our device the ram management is simply not on par with how ICS handled it. I had less than 50mb free memory but you've got to consider that HTC sense has already been allocated its memory so it shouldn't lag the whole system. Hopefully the next update will address the issue...til then I ran v6 supercharger script and patched the framework for new minfrees.
There's a lot of sense related bloat in the stock ROM. If you're not interested in bloat, try cm10. Everything that matters works as of 1/16. Cm10.1 is fancy, camera will shape up when deck isn't sleeping. Just don't go for a cheap lazy king of cm, especially if it's one of 5 by the same winzipper, or if it crams 6 or 7 buzzword in the topic title like "Linaro optimized" or "battery boost." I dunno whatever.
