Hey guys. I have a litening rom 2.3.6 still... i have installed rom manager and i found in there a CyanogenMod rom. I was thinking...
Can i just download and install from ROM manager ? Pls help
Don't use Rom Manager. At all. For anything. Does not play nice with CWRecovery on SGS2. Has a tendency to break it & cause bootloop.
Flash roms/mods/whatever directly from CWRecovery, I.E download CM zip & put in on your internal/external SD card, boot into recovery & flash from there.
Okay so. I want to install disaster rom 4.1.2. But i have 2.3.6 lite ning rom. Can i just flash directly to that rom? Do i need to do a wipe data and cache ?

You should ALWAYS wipe data and cache before flashing anything. Also wipe Dalvik-cache if necessary. You need to find that ROMs ZIP file and then you can flash it. Or tar/tar.md5 if you prefer Odin. But remember ALWAYS wipe.
But i also wonder if you can directly download a JB ROM (im on ICS currently).
There shouldn't be a problem to go from ICS to JB, but i am still not sure and that's why im wondering.
Follow the install instructions for that particular rom from the first page of the thread devoted to the rom. But generally when you move from one rom to a completely different rom (as opposed to merely flashing a nightly or different version of the same rom), you wipe.
R: Installing from ROM Manager
Okay got it. Another last question . I am on 2.3.6, do i need to flash to ICS first? I mean can i install a cyanogen10 directly from clockwork?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I don't think I can be any more clear than I was in my previous post, but I'll try:-
Read the instructions on the first page of the CM10 discussion thread. Follow these instructions to the letter. If they don't specifically mention that you need to flash rom X before flashing CM, then you can safely assume you don't need to. Likewise if they do have such an instruction, do it.
This goes for flashing any rom. Follow the instructions. Every rom has them, and I've never seen a rom that has flashing instructions that are not clear/simple.

No need to be scared. As long as you do your research first & understand exactly what it is you're going to do with the phone before you do it, you should be fine. Don't rush, take your time. Phone isn't going anywhere
You're welcome

Hey mate maybe you should read this post 1st before you delete something on your S2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125282
Cheers
Here & also Stickies.
You're going to have to do a lot of reading/learning. There are no shortcuts, taking shortcuts & not reading/learning leads to bricked phones.
i still didn't get answer to my first question do i need to delete all data on my phone to flash a new ROM??
If your on stock rom then no you don't.
i don't have any rom flashed now, but i'm thinking of miui or cyanogen, do i need to wipe all data or cache for this roms??
Follow whatever instructions these roms have to the letter & you should be fine. It isn't a case of do X regardless of whatever rom you're installing. Some roms have specific instructions.
Yea but its better when you always make a full wipe everytime you change your rom to minimize FCs (errors) but dont forget to back up all your datas and apps

Dear reader,
I've currently been using Cyanomod for 2.3.7 Gingerbread.
My phone is rooted and everything (which took a little while )
Everything is running perfectly fine, but i would like to update my phone to android 4.0+ (whatever the lastest compatible version might be)
How should i go about this?
Do i basically uninstall everything and start from scratch or is there an easy method to quickly update my phone to android 4.
Kind Regards and Thank you for your time!
I believe the answer us first to backup your apps with titanium backup if you need them. Then go to recovery and backup your current Rom. (always be sure to do this). from recovery wipe factory reset and dalvik cache. Then install your new Rom from zip.
You cannot install an android 4.0 + over another version. Always backup and wipe.

Do i need to re-root my phone when i install a new Rom? Or should i just install it through recovery?
Rom's are pre rooted (expect stock, stock BASED roms ARE pre-rooted), once you've installed the rom through cwm, it will be rooted and ready.

If your bootloader is unlocked, you can easily flash a custom kernel (Based on ics, so it'll be compatible with ics rom) And boot into recovery, and flash a custom rom based on ics.
One last question, since i'm having trouble finding compatible roms.
Which one would any of you, recommend for me to use ?
I have a ST18i and i'd like the lastest compatible rom.
Thanks so much for the fast reponses and ofcourse the help.
Kind Regards,
Since you're using CyanogenMod 7 I would recommend you to use CyanogenMod 9.1 i.e. FXP 138 is the best in my experience.

If your finding trouble with compatible roms are you saying your getting bootloops when trying them?, because a different Android Version requires a different kernel, So if you haven't or forget to flash the kernel recommended or provided then that would possibly be where your compatibility issues lye as you will get bootloops if you don't and you are changing version. As Mikii suggested earlier.

Ahhh that must be it then.. I've been using the same kernel for quite some time now because it was quite a hassle to flash it. Different roms come with different kernels (at times). I'll have to figure out how to flash kernels again. Gonna check around the forums to see if i can find a suitable thread.
Thanks so much

The fastest way to flash a kernel is to use the program called flashtool, click on the lightening bolt, select Fastboot mode, then select kernel to flash find the kernel you want to flash and it should be done within literally 2 seconds. once Flashtool gives you the all clear, disconnect your phone from usb, restart phone, and there you go, the old kernel will be overwritten, and so will that kernel's cwm version, with the one from the new kernel.
Try FXP138

Hey guys, need a little help here.
I know this is a silly question but still I wanna make sure, nothing goes wrong
I'm on leaked JB XXLSJ firmware and I want to revert back to ICS 4.0.3...So i just simply need to flash back the 4.0.3 via odin, right?
Because i read it somewhere, few people downgrading from leaked JB to official ICS FW had bricked their phones.
So i just need to flash the .tar file via odin or I need to do something extra?

What most suggest is to use a kernel without brick bug just to be safe, though many say it only occurs when going 4.0.4
When I went from LSJ, I installed PhilZ kernel where theres a function for a clean rom wipe (PhilZ settings i think its called)
Then after that to be safe I did the full wipe, cache partition and manually format /system and /data (don't wipe SDCARD)
Then installed an ICS rom again, its always best to do a clean wipe just to make sure because there will be differences between JB and ICS.
I've gone back and forth from ICS and JB many times now and so far everything is ok:good:

5)In Recovery - PhilZ settings - Clean wipe for rom install
6)Wipe data/factory reset
7)Wipe cache partition

Just go back into download mode and flash Siyah kernel (.tar) and then you will have custom kernel and ability to boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset. Once this is done rom should boot fine.

No real need to stay on 4.0.3 though when you can get rid of bug by flashing cutsom kernel on 4.0.3.

okay so I read through some of the threads and I still don't know how to fix my issue. I rooted my phone using Odin v 1.85 and used siyah 3.4.2. I did it successfully and everything was good. I then gave the phone to my cousin and he said he performed a factory reset to get rid of everything on the phone ( contacts ,etc). Now when I turn on the phone it shows the samsung galaxy display with the triangle and then the screen goes black and just blinks. It still goes back into download mode I just dont know what to do to fix the problem. I know I'm a noob but please HELP!!!
Development section. You'll find the stickies that show how to flash stock packages with Odin. Go back to stock to fix your issue. You should then be able to load a new kernel and flash a custom rom.
Oh, and never let that cousin touch the phone again.

You will need to root first. If you did not flash the stock plus root package already, flash that, and then install a custom kernel which has ClockworkMod Recovery. Then you can flash any firmware.
There is a good guide linked in my signature.

Flash a kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery, then boot into recovery and flash the firmware. Mobile Odin can't handle the CWM flashable zip format.
There is a Siyah kernel for gingerbread that would give you CWM so you could then flash a custom rom. It would be in the development section. Just make sure you grab the version for gingerbread and not ics

I assume you mean nandroid backup from ClockworkMod Recovery? No. It's mainly a space issue, where you want to store them, because they take up quite a bit of space, especially if you have several.

There is a lot of info here in the stickied threads, etc. And as well in the more up to date threads. U will have to do some searching in the q & a and general forums, but it shouldn't be to hard to find ur answers. But u need to be sure of what u r doin before u do it, so u don't end up with a messed up phone again. There are members here that constantly help, but i think it is best to help urself 1st and then ask ?s later if ya can't find an answer or resolve an issue.

Friend, you need to read/research... a lot. I don't know of a way to flash a rom using just a PC. But flashing CM is just like flashing any other rom for your device. Please read the thread of the rom you're wanting to install thoroughly (especially the OP) before proceeding.
And most definitely stay away from Rom Manger; it just isn't completely compatible with the i777.

Isnt there a CWM for i777? I found the app recovery tool that installs CWM but before installing it you see the SCARY rom manager logo, i researched a lot, but i dont know what to do, most of posts and videos are using rom manager.
On the i777 the recovery (in most cases it's CWM) is included in the kernel. So there's no need to install it separately.
The only time you'd ever need to install CWM manually is if you're trying to get from JB to KK. Is this the case? You state you want CM but you fail to list which version. More information would be helpful, such as what you're currently running and what you're trying to accomplish.

Im running at&t 4.1.2, i want to flash CM 10.2
OP,
Ok here ya go...
U can get Root with Framaroot apk (found here on XDA).
U can use Mobile Odin (available on XDA or Play Store) to flash a compatible 4.1.2 dev'd kernel, that includes cwm recovery (see AJK thread in Dev forum).
Flash the AJK kernel (boot.img) initially through Mobile Odin, then reboot into said cwm and flash the AJK kernel again (the whole kernel.zip) so that the capacitive buttons work correctly. Then reboot into recovery and flash ur Rom of choice, per that Rom's OP install instructions. This has been posted quit a few times by myself and others, specifically creepyncrawly. Plz continue to read up thoroughly in the threads i mentioned above and happy flashing.

It's not critical when you wipe. It's probably best to wipe before you flash the rom of your choice, though it can be done after. The worst that can happen is that it won't boot properly before you wipe, but the wipe will fix it.

From stock 3e recovery, you should perform a wipe data/factory reset, then install AJK kernel and the rom. You will not be able to perform wipe cache and dalvik from stock 3e recovery as far as I remember. But either way, the important wipe is wipe data/factory reset from within recovery.
Wow guys thank you so so much it worked i admire what you guys do but no i installed cyanogen 10.1 which ajk kernel is compatible because i think Ajk kernel noswap wont work anymore.
AJ has an AOSP kernel in the OP of his [Kernel] AJK thread.
