Reverting back to ICS from leaked JB - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, need a little help here.
I know this is a silly question but still I wanna make sure, nothing goes wrong
I'm on leaked JB XXLSJ firmware and I want to revert back to ICS 4.0.3...So i just simply need to flash back the 4.0.3 via odin, right?
Because i read it somewhere, few people downgrading from leaked JB to official ICS FW had bricked their phones.
So i just need to flash the .tar file via odin or I need to do something extra?

What most suggest is to use a kernel without brick bug just to be safe, though many say it only occurs when going 4.0.4
When I went from LSJ, I installed PhilZ kernel where theres a function for a clean rom wipe (PhilZ settings i think its called)
Then after that to be safe I did the full wipe, cache partition and manually format /system and /data (don't wipe SDCARD)
Then installed an ICS rom again, its always best to do a clean wipe just to make sure because there will be differences between JB and ICS.
I've gone back and forth from ICS and JB many times now and so far everything is ok:good:

You could click Thanks instead of writing Thanks
1)Download latest PhilZ Kernel
2)Boot to recovery
3)Flash PhilZ Kernel
4)Reboot to recovery
5)In Recovery - PhilZ settings - Clean wipe for rom install
6)Wipe data/factory reset
7)Wipe cache partition
8)Mounts and storage - Format /system , Format /data, Format /cache
9)Install your ICS rom

Dont be a fricking idiot, That will brick his device. You forgot to tell him install custom kernel after flashing rom.
Just go back into download mode and flash Siyah kernel (.tar) and then you will have custom kernel and ability to boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset. Once this is done rom should boot fine.

Steps are like these..
--Go into download mode after flashing custom rom.
--put latest siyah kernel's .tar file into PDA and then flash.
--Wipe data/cache.
--Reboot.
Right?

Actually sorry my bad and apologies. Must have not noticed he specifically wants 4.0.3 not 4.0.4.
No real need to stay on 4.0.3 though when you can get rid of bug by flashing cutsom kernel on 4.0.3.

Help
Im stuck in recovery after trying to flash back to stock and getting stuck in hidden, how do I get out of this dummies guide please.

Ultra-full wipe with CWM before installing stock ROM, any risk to brick?

Hello everybodies,
I want to give my Samsung Galaxy S2 to my mum after buying myself a nice and warm S3! ^_^
Here's what I'm planning to do:
1/ Wipe with CWM: /cache, /data, /system, dalvik, battery stats, sdcard and external-sdcard, so really everything!
2/ Reboot into Download mode afterwards and flash a stock ROM
My question is: can I do that? Or if I wipe all this stuff I risk not being able to boot in Download mode?
I'm currently using OlloS2 LPX based ROM.

it shouldn't give u any trouble
Download Mode is part of bootloader, so don't worry and wipe freely :good:
Thank you guys!
I know I could find the answer by myself, but I heard that the ROMs LQ5 and LPM have a chance to brick the phone. Therefore, which is the latest safe stock ROM?
U could tru any aokp based rom...they are all safe...
If not search safe ics kernel in search tool and u ll find.some post about wich kernel is safe and.wich not
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Thanks for all. I just flashed LPX and everything ran smoothly.
I did some research for a friend, that needed an ICS sammy rom and just for sum up, any ICS sammy version released or built befor july are safe. Since 9 of july samsung included the erease_emmc_cap lineain their Kernels. so...
the problem is triggered when u want to make a wipe/factory reset. if not u can use them without problems
Yeah I also read that ROMs LQ5 and above have a high risk to brick the phone if any wipe is used with CWM using the CF-Root kernels of these ROMs. Is this what you're talking about?
I've actually formatted the internal memory many times when changing ROMs. The bootloader and kernel is on a hidden partition.

Flash Custom JB ROM on 4.0.4 stock.

Hi.
I have a friend who has a Galaxy S2 I9100 (White version) and his android version is 4.0.4 stock, un-rooted of course. It's all stock.
I just want to ask a question since I have heard you can brick your S2 in recovery mode if it is 4.0.4. So my question is this,
HOW CAN I FLASH CUSTOM ROM WITHOUT BRICKING, ON STOCK 4.0.4 ROM.
Now my guess is this, I must be wrong, so please let me know if its dangerous or not.
Flash Stock 4.0.3 rom via Odin first, than Root it with Siyah kernel which also has ClockWorkMod Recovery, wipe everything, and than flash the Custom ROM.
Is it OK, or I must do something else.
Thanks a lot.
Just flash Siyah Kernel on 4.0.4 and you can then flash custom ROM no need to downgrade to 4.0.3.
Flashing latest Siyah Kernel via Odin, and than I can wipe data/reset wipe cache and everything, and flash the custom ROM immediately from there after doing a NANDROID backup and the phone will not get bricked, right?
Is this really so safe?
Thanks for helping.

Yes after flashing Siyah kernel ( v4.1.5 or v5.0.1 meant for S2) from ODIN ( u have to use the tar file of siyah) ur phone with android ICS 4.0.4 will be safe from 'Brick Bug' issue'.
In siyah recovery u can do wipe data/cache, make nandroid bkp of ur exsisting rom and also u can flash any custom JB or ICS roms ( which support siyah kernel) on ur phone without any issue

Correct!
It was also correct in the other topics that cover bricking, flashing, rooting etc and are easy to find by looking at first/second page of questions or by using search.
Use search or look in future as you will get your answers quicker. They are already out there.
Thanks all.
Also, I searched, but couldn't get an exact answer. People were asking around that topic, but exactly how I wanted to ask (although I am sure a heavy search would've found me my answer) Also since this is a Q&A section I thought even asking the obvious question wouldn't make anybody mad. So thank you for your questions.
I dont usually create a lot of topics to ask questions, but only do it when I think it would be better if I get the opinion from more experienced guys so I wont brick anything.
Thanks a lot guys, and the whole XDA Community. The main reason Android is today the number.1 OS on smartphones.
one more question please.
if the phone is on stock 4.0.4 and with siyah kernel, updating the phone with Kies when updates are available, will it brick it or something like that.

But when restoring the Nandroid backup the SeuperSU app CWM app and STweaks was there so I deleted all these all these apps with RootExplorer and than deleted RootExplorer too. I hope I didn't do any bass mistake doing that because i have no money to pay him a new S2.

Installing from ROM Manager

Hey guys. I have a litening rom 2.3.6 still... i have installed rom manager and i found in there a CyanogenMod rom. I was thinking...
Can i just download and install from ROM manager ? Pls help
Don't use Rom Manager. At all. For anything. Does not play nice with CWRecovery on SGS2. Has a tendency to break it & cause bootloop.
Flash roms/mods/whatever directly from CWRecovery, I.E download CM zip & put in on your internal/external SD card, boot into recovery & flash from there.
Okay so. I want to install disaster rom 4.1.2. But i have 2.3.6 lite ning rom. Can i just flash directly to that rom? Do i need to do a wipe data and cache ?

You should ALWAYS wipe data and cache before flashing anything. Also wipe Dalvik-cache if necessary. You need to find that ROMs ZIP file and then you can flash it. Or tar/tar.md5 if you prefer Odin. But remember ALWAYS wipe.
But i also wonder if you can directly download a JB ROM (im on ICS currently).
There shouldn't be a problem to go from ICS to JB, but i am still not sure and that's why im wondering.
Follow the install instructions for that particular rom from the first page of the thread devoted to the rom. But generally when you move from one rom to a completely different rom (as opposed to merely flashing a nightly or different version of the same rom), you wipe.
R: Installing from ROM Manager
Okay got it. Another last question . I am on 2.3.6, do i need to flash to ICS first? I mean can i install a cyanogen10 directly from clockwork?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I don't think I can be any more clear than I was in my previous post, but I'll try:-
Read the instructions on the first page of the CM10 discussion thread. Follow these instructions to the letter. If they don't specifically mention that you need to flash rom X before flashing CM, then you can safely assume you don't need to. Likewise if they do have such an instruction, do it.
This goes for flashing any rom. Follow the instructions. Every rom has them, and I've never seen a rom that has flashing instructions that are not clear/simple.

rom advice (wifes phone)

this is my wifes phone (I have a Note) I want to know what rom I can go to that is very stable , prefer ics :
Samsung SGH-I777
2.3.6
I777UCKK6
2.3.35.14
GINGERBREAD.UCKK6
sorry but I dont generally mess with her phone , she does have root and cwm touch 5.5.0.4 . There seems to be a wifi problem it turns on and then off , never sticking , I suppose wiping all might help , I hate seeming naive but when I mess with my own phone its all a chance , I dont want to just do that with hers!
There are a lot of stable roms. Do you want touchwiz based or AOSP based? I don't have an opinion on AOSP roms because I've barely used any of them.
For Samsung based roms, Shoman94's roms are very stable and popular. That's what I use as my daily driver. For ICS, use SHOstock2, but for the latest JB use SHOstock3.

If I remember correctly, I think that version of the Siyah kernel was put out by zedomax on GalaxyS2Root website. That kernel combined with UCKK6 was always a problem. In fact, that package was always a problem.
Anyway, the kernel has ClockworkMod Recovery. You should decide on a good rom, as discussed above, download the zip file and use usb to transfer it to the sdcard on the phone, then boot into recovery, perform a wipe data/factory reset, and flash the rom. It doesn't matter that you are on Gingerbread right now. You can flash either an ICS or JellyBean rom because the package will contain the complete system and kernel and modem, everything.
---------- Post added at 07:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 PM ----------
Enter recovery by holding down all three of vol + vol - and power buttons continuously until it boots into recovery. If it won't boot into recovery, then it might be a bad flash.
Thank you, I got the siyah kernel from a thread here, when I first got the phone (off ebay )it did in fact have the wrong kernel,I used entropy flash back to get back,I guess I did something else, but I will use one of the roms you mentioned ,glad we have you here ,I've been messing with wp7 the last few years and finally getting back to android (cept been playing with boot loaders in a500)

It is exactly that, a counter, and the only purpose of it as far as we know is warranty protection, so I would say no, it's not important. On the other hand, most folks don't like the splash screen with the yellow triangle, but you can remove that easily enough if you still get it on boot.

Question about superbrick and upgrading to Cyanogen!

Hey everyone,
Sorry if the Answer was staring me in my face but I'm not sure about upgrading to the CyanogenMod because of the superbricking I might get..
If any help can be given as to whether I am safe to do it, it will be much appreciated, My android version is 4.0.4, Build number imm76D.XWLPT.
I have just rooted it with XWLPW-ROOT-CWM6, and It seems to have rooted fine.
Will be much appreciated if I can get any help as to whether I can Flash it with CyanogenMod and everything will be fine..
Thanks again
EDIT: Yeah I just realized about having the Superbrick bug, I must have a kernel that is not liable to bricking, I rooted it with PhilZ touch 3 and when I go into recovery mode it says CWM Base version: 6.0.1.8 at the bottom, Am I safe from the bug?
You're safe as long as you don't perform a wipe from stock recovery in 4.0.4 (and not all phones have an insane chip). So yes, you can flash CM.

Thanks alot dude!
EDIT: Sorry, do you know which CyanogenMod I should flash? I just want to upgrade to one that is fully working, but there are many in the index and I dont know which one to flash :s THANKS!!
and If I dont do a wipe? wont it be stuck at boot as the Guide says it will?
I highly recommend you read the discussion thread for the version of CM you're wanting to try in General section. So you can get a handle on other people's experiences with it, bugs/flaws/annoyances/features/etc. I never flash a rom without reading the first 10 pages of those threads & the last two weeks or so worth of posts so I know what I'm in for.
I agree. And you always have to perform a full wipe if you change firmware.

I assume you've read guides about how to flash a rom? Copy the zip-file to your phone, back up, wipe and flash.
You don't have to be scared of this superbrick bug because you're already running a custom kernel.

Well, I was trying to root my phone so I don't think so, now that I think of it no, its only root and clockwork recovery mode thingymajig because file size only 7mb so if it was only root, my build number and everything is as same as before ^-^,
That's what I am so confuzzled about, I need to downgrade to a custom rom that must come with a custom kernel right to be able to upgrade to cyanogen right...? otherwise ill brick it?
No. Make sure you flash a custom kernel (for example Siyah) with Odin. Then there's no need to flash other firmware first before upgrading. Just wipe your device in CWM (after the back up), and flash the rom you want.

Make sure you have kies installed or at least the drivers.
Reboot into download mode
Run ODIN 1.85
Flash Siyah kernel (.tar) via PDA section
Boot into recovery run backup
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash CM zip file.
