[Q] Root SG2 with 4.0.4 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello wise masters of the android :fingers-crossed:
Recently got my SG2 wich come with 4.0.3 ofc i'm stupid and flashed it with Odin to Stock 4.0.4 (LQ6) and now i want to root but i read on the forums that i might end up with a suoperbrick or something like that (already have a brick with a PSP label laying around my bedroom, 1 is enough )
If you could give me a Step by Step guide on how to root my S2 i would be forever grateful

Flash Odin version of Siyah kernel. Root + CWM. Done. As there are already numerous threads on how to root a phone/flash roms, I'm not about to regurgitate a step by step guide here for purely your convenience. Search.
Edit - Guides. I strongly suggest a lot of reading/researching before you do anything. We seem to have had more borked phones in here than normal lately, and almost every single person did so because they hadn't done their homework in the first instance. Many asked what you asked, got brief or incomplete instructions, made a whole bunch of assumptions because the instructions weren't quite there, or were in too much of a hurry and ended up in trouble.
If you do the reading/learning yourself, you understand the processes which makes you less likely to get into trouble in the first place, and even if you do, you can fix it easily yourself without having to wait anything up to a day or more to get answers here in order to recover your phone if it isn't completely borked. Believe me, doing your homework as opposed to being without your phone for a day or more if you stuff up is worth it.

First Make Backup of all your contacts and messages in case anything unexpected occurs..
Make sure you have All Galaxy S2 USB drivers installed on your PC before following this and kies disable just in case..
Rooting Procedure:
Step one: First of all make sure that you have download and install all the needed software. Then, Put device in USB debugging mode: Settings ->Applications -> Development -> USB debugging.
Step Two: Reboot your device in the download session mode. To get enter in the download mode of Samsung Galaxy S2, switched off the device and turn it on again by holding Volumedown button + Home button and Power button simultaneously. You will surely reach to the download mode. You can get yourself confirm by identifying same as below mention picture as on your phone screen.
Step Three: Open the ODIN Downloader .
Step Four: Now, with the help of USB Cable connect the device to the computer while keeping the Odin open then wait for the few seconds then odin notified you that the device is connected to the computer(one of its boxes goes yellow). Select the checkboxes next to “Auto reboot” and “F. Reset Time” and kept default else options. After all this, press “PDA” Button and extract and select the CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-v5.3-CWM5.tar file(download here) which you have downloaded on your pc. Now Press “Start” button, after this pressing the start button ODIN will flash the kernel and after flashing it phone will reboot. Becareful, don’t dare to disattach the device from computer while rebooting.
DONE..!!!!
Your Phone is Now Rooted...:good:
Idk about your kernel....whichever one it is just download its cf-root and flash that one..

If protection from emmc bug in stock 4.0.4 kernel is all you want then all you need to do is flash a custom kernel like Siyah and you're done.

Newbie root with vodafone device

it wont let me post this in the dev forum and i did a seperate thread to the tips one to get my specific question looked at.
firstly, i believe due to it being a vodafone device, i dont get the update offered in kies which i believe is up to ke7, mine is ke1 and i cant see vodafone getting their fingers out very quickly to authorise the update. if i root it, should this then offer the update or is it only likely if i also completely unbranded it?
i dont want to flash any custom roms or anything so if the update still doesnt get offered after rooting, what other benefits would i see from rooting? what programs, inc vodafones own, could i remove?
if i do root it, i should download the unsecure .tar xwkdd even though i am currently on ke1? will i need to re-root again if/when there was any further updates such as ke8/9 etc etc?
also download odin and superoneclick and follow the guide.
to get rid of the yellow exclamation i the follow the same initiall process but use ke1 as i would have been on this if i still hadn't managed to update with kies or ke7 if i had managed to update? if i had to root first to GET that ke7 update would i root, update firmware through kies THEN reflash with ke7? OR root, reflash with ke1 THEN update? as you can see from this last paragraph, having vodafone branded phone makes it more confusing for such a newbie as i dont know what to do with that update.
please be gentle guys as i want to get the best from this phone but dont want to brick my phone and being a newbie i am very worried about getting it wrong
If you have to ask you shouldnt be doing it, but if you insist then follow the guide step by step and you cant go wrong. And if you do go wrong, insert your jig and flash away.
Also a post like this shouldnt go in the dev forum as it would get locked/deleted so you got the post in the right section.

thx mate.
surely everyone here had to start somewhere and that would have meant learning how to do it, possibly by asking questions.
as of following the guide, sorry but my question points out that i simply wanted a little extra reassurance about what rooting can help with but also what way round i would approach the update of the firmware and the rooting. i have already looked at the guide and it doesn't really have the finer points of the update built into the guide so thats why i posted.
One updates are released by Vodafone the latest is KE1 you wait for them to update .
Rooting is nothing to do with update and will void warranty .
You need to follow the instructions if you want to root
Long Guide for beginners .
Root phone then install Ke1 Kernel from post 2 ..
If you want total debrand use the debrand guide but you lose Voda update path .

Long guide (for beginners)
- Download the attached ODIN file and extract the .zip file
- Download the attached XWKDD, but do NOT extract the .tar file
- Download and extract SuperOneClick (Some say you should not be using the very latest version 1.9, but 1.5 or so)
- If you do not have Samsung's KIES 2.0 installed, download and install it. You need it to install the correct USB drivers, so the programs can communicate with the device. Reboot your computer after installation of KIES.
- Make sure your device is in USB debugging mode: Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging
- Reboot your device into download mode: Turn the device off, then power it on again by pressing and holding VolumeDown + Home + Power simultaneously. You will know when you are in download mode, it is really obvious
- Start ODIN
- Connect the device to your computer using USB
- Wait a few seconds, the ODIN screen should show you that a device is now connected
- Make sure that in ODIN NOTHING is checked, except the "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset Time" checkboxes. Press the "PDA" button, and select the "XWKDD_insecure.tar" file.
- Press "Start". ODIN you should now be flashing the kernel, and the device should reboot.
- Wait until the device is rebooted, and while still being connected over USB, start SuperOneClick, and press ROOT.
- Reboot the device
- Done !

[Q] Bricked after attempting to upgrade to 2.3.5... HELP PLEASE

Hello, I am a newbie Android user and I have been exploring the greatness of the OS for few days now.
Just now I tried to update my firmware to 2.3.5 and followed instruction from a non-xda developer site and little did I know, it messed up my phone big time.
While I was loading all the files (CSC, tar, modem, etc), and I should've known better when the site told me to check the "re partition" box, but I was stupid enough to go along with it.
So Odin got stuck at re-writing the modem or something like that and I had to pull out the battery from the phone.
Now the phone turns on only in recovery mode and none of the recovery choices work, if I choose one it just shows a little green android with white bordered triangle with an orange exclamation mark in the middle.
I can still access the download mode by using conventional button pressing method, but my phone is NO LONGER RECOGNIZED through the USB so I cannot flash the old stock firmware...
Is there a fix for this? If anyone can help me resolve this issue I am willing to compensate very well in return...
Thank you so much for reading my convoluted troubled story, and I really hope to find some resolution in your wisdom.
If u can't reflash your farmware
Than their is only one option left
give it to the Samsung service center they will repair your phone

I'd be down to do so but it will be hard as I have 4 custom binary flash counter... What can I do as of now?
i dont know if this helps you out buddy but maybe if you read in this thread you might find people that had the same trouble as you..just try and search the thread first and if nothing comes up try and read the first page maybe there you might get an idea on how to unbrick the phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Thank you.. But I unfortunately did not follow the instructions that is written there I used an external source which told me to check "re partition" which completely messed up the phone, I think. Thank you for your input, though.

Ah I see. Could you please help me understand what you mean by "open keyboard?" I just don't see how I could open keyboard on my SGS2 when it isn't recognized by my computer... If you could clarify what you mean by that it will be really appreciated!
So from your information provided, you have a stock recovery and your phone is semi-bricked. You can still boot and your computer won't recognize your phone.
Do you have a jig? What firmware did you flash? You could use a jig to reset the flash counter on the phone and return it for warranty saying that Kies messed up while upgrading firmware. If you've flashed the KI3 with the new bootloader then the jig won't be able to clear the flash counter.
EDIT: Maybe an experienced senior member might come and look at this thread and provide some other solution. Do wait!
EDIT2: Try reinstalling Kies and the drivers. Don't give up just yet!

I don't think that the guide he posted is particularly for galaxy s2 because he also mentioned a trackball...
but if you can go the settings he mentioned you might find something and lead you.
And if you decide to bring the phone to samsung you might want to have a read at Intratechs Official firmware
thread in (Original Android Development)there you can find a bootloader that you can flash so you can use the jig to reset the counter
edit: wow I also failed to read that your computer can't recognise your phone
anymore....
Have you tried to delete the samsung drivers when you go to
your hardware settings?? and let windows find it's drivers again?
Not sure if this will help. I read somewhere someone else with their PC not really recognizing the phone. Someone else advised to unplug the phone and remove the battery then connect to PC insert battery and put it into download mode.
I could be wrong with the method. Its just from my memory.
Also this may make no difference but maybe removing the sim and SD card. Someone will probably call me stupid for suggesting that though.
I wouldn't try that unbrick method mate. That looks like it is an unroot for an old phone..possible the G1 (AKA HTC Dream).
Thanks for all the help... I have been trying to uninstall the driver and reinstall it but no luck. If I could just get the phone to be recognized I think I will be fine, but I just don't know what to do
Thank you for all the suggestions, please keep them coming!
EDIT: this is the guide I used that messed up my phone.. http://androidflip.com/install-andr...-samsung-galaxy-s2-gt-i9100-installing-guide/
EDIT: Tried to reinstall KIES, no luck. It's like there's nothing on the other side of the USB cord... Not even a sound when I plug the phone in...
If it had been via XDA the instructions are do not do what they are saying .
In Odin Select Re-Partition , Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time
In Odin select these files
For PIT select u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit
BIG BIG NO to the above .
As usual some stuff ripped from XDA and some from elsewhere .
My suggestion would be one buy USB jig it hopefully will clear the rom counter and enter download mode .
two in recovery mode go to mounts and storage and format cache data dalvik system and sd card .
Clean phone with nothing on it .Flash stock firmware .

If PC does not now recognise phone either try another PC or return phone to service centre and say it failed on a Kies upgrade .

Thanks, I tried to do this but unfortunately the problem persists... What do you think the root of the problem is? I just dont' get it why it won't be recognized anymore.. I feel like I could easily get it to work if I could just get it to become recognized to flash stock firmware....
EDIT: JJE, I would turn it into the service place but I have custom rom count of 4 And I don't have any USB jigs to work with either.... I am still within the 15 days of the phone purchase day, would they be willing to swap my phone?
BUMP, any input would be appreciated...

Disable USB debugging and try again.
Be sure that KIES (and any of KIES' processes) is not running on your PC.
If that does not help, try to use another USB port and/or USB cable.
(Just to check that this is not the cause of the issue.)
If you have still problems with your phone, you may have to flash a stock ROM back to your phone.
You should use the latest, stable and official version, i.e. XWKJ3.
You can get a non-wipe installation in Intratech's Official Firmware thread here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Just have a look at first post for description and download the Frankenstein version for XWKJ3 from third post.
Good luck !

Would my phone become BRICK or MALFUNCTION?
Thank you very much
could anyone help me? thanks a lot
Are you actually in download mode when trying to flash?
As you mention the "USB Debug" option, it sounds like you're in fully booted up system.
- Power off the phone
- Hold VOLUME-DOWN + HOME + POWER until the download mode appears
Then use Odin

Thank You soo much...! I have being pulling my hair for 2 hours for not getting the rooting done, and Your answer nailed it..

Now I just have another head ache, when rooting, the infamous yelow triangle appeared, and according to the link below, You could get rid of that by flashing and original ROM, but that got rid of my CF Rooting too, I guess.. SuperUsers and CWM was gone, also after an reboot...

I found out what I did wrong, I found out that I was supposed to flash an original KERNEL after rooting in order to get rid of the triangle, and I was mislead to DL an original ROM.. That's why SuperUsers and CWM disappeared.. After DL and flash of the original stock kernel, it worked like a charm
I used:
XWKI8 Stock Kernel: Download
Password: [email protected]
From this thread with stock ROMS and KERNELs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
NB!
When rooting / flashing, You may xperience that Your apps / widgets disappears. A reboot will bring them back, so if You wanna play safe, prepare for alot of rebooting when rooting / flashing
Picked this thread up since I'm facing the same problem right now.
I've read enough to know what to do to get it working.
But there's something that I don't dare to do right now.
I don't dare to just kill odin and disconnect the usb cable.
Anyways I'm stuck at zImage and nothing is happening.
Can I just disconnect the usb cable without getting a brick?
Quick answers would be appreciated by the way, since I'm messing with a friends device right now :silly:

Root voids warranty on Samsungs instructions .

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
follow this bit to the word
How to install using: (desktop) ODIN
Short: unpack the ZIP download, you will end up with a TAR, flash this in ODIN as PDA, and optionally install and run Triangle Away afterwards to reset the flash counter. Beware that this should boot your device into recovery mode (for a few seconds to install SuperSU and CWM Manager) after flashing. Sometimes it doesn't, just flash it again in that case.
Long:
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Download and unzip the CF-Root-SGS3-vX.X.zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-SGS3-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-down + home + power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)

How about next time, instead of flaming, post a useful reply, so when someone does actually try and search they don't just get this ****!

Richdog is absolutely right.
Search wouldn't be filled with that **** if people searched instead of posting this ****.
No offence OP, using this guys words to help us build up a rapport.
Search is free and very useful, and it'll prevent you getting flamed next time you ask a question if you have searched and couldn't find a suitable answer and your thread starts with "I tried searching but..."
Glad you found what you needed and rooted your device. Oh, and welcome to hell....I mean xda...

I actually used the search and found the right stuff (I think), but now that I have a problem with rooting, I have to get 10 posts to post in thread first.
So I might as well abuse this little thread for it:
In stead of the above mentioned thread I used this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Is that a proper way of rooting or should I use the other thread? Either way, the tool from the thread I just linked doesn't see my phone. I've tried on both win7 and xp machines and it just doesn't see it. The phone is recognized fine by windows, just not by the tool. So, what to do?

whatever is this method, go for the first (chainfire) this developer is well known for his Cfroot, it's already running on my Samsung galaxy tab and millions of other phones around the world, just follow the instructions (the long one and it's ok if you take more than 30 second just to make sure you didn't forget anything)
good luck

I will never apologise or back down from politely asking people if they have done a basic search before asking basic question, which has obviously been asked on here a hundred, maybe even a thousand times. It is other peoples time that is being used to get an answer, and I personally only think thats acceptable if you have really had a look yourself first and genuinely can't find the answer.
The video from XDA sums it up more amusingly and eloquently than I can.

No. Read the post in thread, maybe in v2 mskip added US support.
So I've tried doing it many times and even re flashing cyanogen mod 9 on my phone but I still can seem to get rom manager to work. Everytime it prompts me to install clockwork recovery and then at the top, the bar will reach full and then instantly freeze.
I'm running a nightly build anybody able to give me some suggestions?

Be sure to give Rom Manager root permissions.

Root SCH-R760

Hey I have a SGS2 but its a generic handset from ACG. Its similar to USCC device but my kernel is completely different than any others on the web. If I use ODIN to flash a custom Kernel in my device will it result in data loss or any other harm? I am still kind of lost as to what using ODIN to flash a custom kernel will do to my device other than put CWM and SuperUser on my device.
I would also like to know this. I also have a SCH-R760.
I actually ran through the rooting method, and the Kernel didn't touch the Radio. I didn't have LOS, and I am running Jelly Bean on my device now. You can follow the links in my signature below =]
nice, if you need the stock ever shoot me a pm, and I can get it uploaded.
If anyone is just wanting stock root, it can be found HERE.

If you can get it in download mode, do a one click Odin back to stock and start over. For my phone I use EL29. Usually if you can get it to Samsung screen, it is only soft bricked and fixable. Good luck!
Install the Galaxy S 2 Drivers
Driver Download
On your phone, select USB Debugging and Unknown Sources from the Settings menu.
(unknown sources located in the application tab in settings at the very top and usb debugging located in the application tab in settings in under development).
Plug your phone into your computer with the USB Cable that came with it.
Download this easy rooter tool
Epic 4G Touch Auto Fixer
Run the e4auto-sfx.exe (aka Root and download mode placer)
Press E then Enter.
Then press H then Enter on your keyboard then press any button to continue.
Your phone will now reboot into download mode. (green android guy that with a downloading bar)
Download Odin if you don't already have it
Odin Download
Download this Stock SCH-R760 File
Stock Download
Select the PDA Option on your Odin and flash it.
This will restore your device to factory default settings. From there you might need to flash your carrier files into the phone since this will restore it 100% back to factory settings.
If you have more questions I am here to help.

Hey, I have a generic sch-r760. I already managed to root but I am wanting to install a custom kernel with cwm attached. Need to get a recovery on the thing and I'm looking for ROMs as well but if I can at least get a kernel with cwm I'll be on the right path
I am sorry to be 'That guy'... But this is not the right place at all for this question.
If there is a forum for the device in question, you need to go there and ask the question. If not you need to go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=456 and ask the question there.
If a noob comes in here and does anything on there E4GT from this post, they will be very unhappy.
I have asked a MOD to move the post to avoid confusion.

Thanks, I had been trying to locate the correct spot so I keep doing searches on the model number commenting and hoping someone can help out and tell me where km suppose to be:good:
Thread moved to Android Q&A since it didn't belong in the Epic 4G Touch but doesn't seem to have its own forum.
Thanks for your understanding on this matter.

This guide works great for the SCH-R760x even though this is a US cellular site
Root Guide with CWM and no Triangle.
Team US Cellular posted some good stuff for this phone on their website. Haven't seen any mirrors on XDA yet
