[Q] Xperia P and AT&T Question - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

just a general question here for P/LT22i owners. I received a text/notification from AT&T today that they've replaced my unlimited 'non-smartphone' plan with the 3gb $30 plan. Did anyone else here receive it?

[Q] Is there any way to keep media net unlimited (not smartphone plan)?

I have a 5-6 year old media net unlimited plan $20 from AT&T which I got when I was using a Motorola MPX220. After that phone I used unlocked smartphones (tilt - UK version and tilt2 - Australian version).
Is there any way to keep this plan after buying this phone? Can I be grandfathered in or is that only possible with the $30 data plans?
no more media net
you WILL get switched to a $25 plan

That is what I did. I have the same plan, if I get a contract I lose my unlimited plan.
No its possible. ATT will recognize your imei number and bump you to a data plan. You have to buy a phone that is not in ATT system such as bell version of atrix. Other wise no chance.

okay so between James62370 and sl8125, one of you is spreading FUD.
it seems like for one person it works but according to another, it wouldnt. whats up with that?
i have a $10 unlimited data plan for messaging phones that i am currently using with a no commitment TILT2 and the phone prior to that was an iphone 2g.
so James62370, it works? if you buy the phone no commitment?
You wil get switched to a smartphone data plan if you use a smartphone they recognise the imei number of.

Ok ... here is how you can see if you can keep your old plan:
Check the features you have on your line ... If you have a feature called "Smartphone Exclusion" then no matter what ... AT&T wont be able to put the required data plans on you line automatically (the $15 or $25 / month)
If you have unlimited texting for the family as well ... then by providing a non-smartphone IMEI for your line you can get unlimited internet for $10/month.

I can confirm this as well. I spoke to an AT&T rep last night and he explained to me that all of my phones have "Data Exclusion", and that even if I bought the Atrix at the 2-year contract price from AT&T's website, it would not be able to apply a smartphone data plan to my account. I have the Media Net plan on one number with the Tilt 2, and no data on line 2, and I bought the Aria for line 2 and they did not apply any data to it.
He did warn me that if I made any changes to the data features on any phone I MIGHT lose the data exclusion, and that if I bought a phone from an AT&T store the rep might screw up and add the data, since Data Exclusion is such a rare feature, but that if I bought online the system would just leave me alone.
Now I just need to know if "4G" data works on the old Media Net plans.

Theres no real 4g anyways
just use the standard APN that was posted here for "unlimited tethering"
Since I have been on the phone with ATT for the last 3 days it has been one thing after another..first data issues coming from the iPhone they switched me over to a 2GB cap called them up they "fixed it" (basically added the smartphone pack. Yesterday got a few calls at work I let them go to VM...so i thought. Somehow my VM got messed up had to call about that. This morning I didn't get one text from anyone found a bit odd since me and the wife text a lot during work when we can. Checked online I had no text plan??? WTF!?? Called them up and guess what I had an older 1500 text plan they don't offer that so i cant get it...really?? come on ATT I just bought a phone no contract nothing should have changed.
So as of now everything seems ok, still working have a case open for my text plan and have gotten some credit back for the data stuff. But really i should have never gone through this whole mess when all I did was buy a phone out right and put my old sim in it.

AT&T recognizes the IMEI on all of their iphones. When I put my sim into my friends iphone, it asked me to update my data plan. Obviously, I did not...
It works on the Atrix, though I don't doubt if AT&T knew which phone I had, they would probably want me to upgrade. I asked a rep many years ago, they said I have some sort of legacy feature grandfathered in, but if I make any type of changes to my plan, I would lose it. I cannot remember what they call it. Thus I cannot purchase a phone with an AT&T contract. Pretty lame, but that has been my experience and what I have been told. Not all reps know what they are talking about.
I'm not here to argue with anyone. I know which plan I have, and I know I have an Atrix. All I did was take my sim from my old phone out and put it into my new Atrix and it works without complaining for me to upgrade my data plan.
However, I am not impress with the HSUPA speeds, and it seems everyone has the same issue whether they are on a $30 unlimited plan, or $20 medianet bundle.
I hope this helps, good luck guys!
Well, I don't see anything called "Smartphone Exclusion" in either of my lines (this is a 2 line family plan, only my phone has the medianet unlimited).
I guess I'll need to wait and buy a Bell Canada version of the phone?
If you are checking it online, it doesn't show as a regular feature. There is a link that shows "other features" ... or just call them up and ask if you have it.
I did upgrade one of my lines, they added $15 in the store. I just called them and got that off of the line, luckily the smart phone exclusion did not go away!

The smartphone exclusion feature only covers you for your current device. If you put your SIM into a phone that Att recognizes as a valid smartphone that is different than the one you currently have on file, your grandfather status is gone and you get a smartphone data plan. Happened to a few people I know. No commitment pricing has nothing to do with it, since its in the Att terms of service, I think. If you are getting grandfather status back, the sales people are likely making exceptions.
i dont know but Mine too is media net plan since touch pro 2, nexus one, captivate and atrix.
My co-worker complained to AT&T and they grandfathered him into the unlimed data plan.

Did he buy the phone subsidized or off the contract? And can you learn if he complained after he got the phone and AT&T automatically switched him to the limited plan?
Thanks in advance

If you guys look hard enough the same unlimited data plan for LTE is still on there ($30 unlimited). I did this with an upgrade.

As long as you keep any kind of smartphone, you can keep your unlimited data plan, even if it's LTE

Xperia S - ATT GoPhone - US?

Anyone know if the Sony Xperia S will work using ATT prepaid GoPhone $50 a month plan in the US? I read somewhere it will work with talk/text, but how about data? I saw a video with an iPhone 4 running on the same plan with 3G.
Thanks

yep, I did it with my old Arc in December in Hawaii. Just ask them to activate it with a dumbphone imei. They should have a dummy one they use for this in the store, maybe even say you don't have your device with you. (i didn't, they were just kind enough to know what I wanted).
I don't think I even had to add the APN settings, it was pulled in from the sim.
Ohhh, now that I think of it they said they wouldn't do it with a micro sim as it was for the iphone. So bring the device and tell them that is what you need it for as they rep I spoke with gave me some story about an agreement with apple. (probably false)

International GSIII $15 Unlimited Data plan issues

HI Guys,
I was using $15 unlimited Non-Smartphone Data plan data plan all along. Lately for the past 4 months on 3rd of every month they are putting me on a $30 Smart phone Data plan and i would call the customer service and they would put me back on $15 Non-Smartphone Data plan. But this time their system identified this as a smartphone and not letting the customer care guys to put it back to $15 Smart phone Data. I said it is a Non-Smart
Nokia phone and also provided my IMEI(International GSIII). Apparently my IMEI(International GSIII) is identified as a smartphone. Do you have any suggestion guys.. Help me. Thanks.
Don't quite understand the point of your post or even what you're asking. It sounds like you've been lying to your supplier, it's been found out and now you want advice on a more convincing lie
Some of the IMEI numbers are picked up by AT&T. I think they are mostly white. What color is yours ?

Your IMEI tells both the manufacturer and phone model. You have been found out. Tough....

A lie has no legs. My suggestion is use the smartphone unlimited plan, or change your supplier

[Q] Upgrading from Rezound

Hello Everyone,
I in the next few days I will be available for a device upgrade. I am going to go from a Rezound to S4 but I am concerned about my unlimited data.
I still have unlimited data on my plan, will upgrading my device change this?
I know now they are forcing everyone into tiered plans but I was hoping this would not change my plan. My wife and I are on a shared plan and she had to get a 2GB data plan when she got her Rhyme. I was grandfathered into my unlimited when I got my Rezound. I also still have the 500 txt messages for $5 a month which they do not offer anymore. I hope that does not get changed either
Thanks,
Ian...
if you get the phone subsidized you lose unlimited, if you have another line you can take and activate the new phone on then move the phone back to your unlimited line you should be good. just don't activate the subsidized device on the unlimited line or you are toast. at least I think that's how it all works.

You need to buy the phone outright at full price to retain your unlimited if you can't do the alternative line option corporal_hades pointed out. Verizon is offering financing to split the cost over 12 months with an additional $2 a month charge I believe.
I'm in the same boat you're in, I would like to upgrade, don't wanna give up my unlimited either.
Thanks for the information guys. Sometimes it seems like Verizon and the other carriers got us by the [email protected]
Don't forget the Moto X is $399, and the LG G2, HTC One, and Droid Ultra are $449 off contract now... just one more way to keep unlimited data.

It may also be worth it to decide if you really need unlimited data, or change your usage somewhat to get within 2 or 4 GB of data a month, you can save a lot if you can make some changes to your usage and get on WiFi more.
I know corporate stores will not do it, but one of the smaller Verizon stores I went into the other day said I could use my upgrade to get a new phone on my wife's life(alternate upgrade), then do a hardware swap to put the new phone on my line. It wouldn't hurt to ask a few of the stores around you to see if theyll do that.
She said if I did this I would be able to keep my unlimited.

I upgraded to the HTC one through best buy and was able to keep my unlimited plan. I upgraded the phone on my account that's already on the tiered data plan. Then switched the new phone to my unlimited line at the Verizon store. Best buy or Verizon didn't give me any problems doing it. Small price to pay to keep unlimited data.
