Hi everyone,
my friend's sgs2 has the following problem: everything works fine, except for the audio. there is just no sound coming out from any of the two speakers. if i plug in earphones, i just hear constant noise with cracks in it, but nothing that sounds like what is supposed to come out of the earphones.
i sent in the device for warranty and, seemingly like many others, got the reply that the device has a water damage and is therefore excluded from warranty. my friend swore that he never dropped it into water or anything.
When i look at the pictures from the repair service it looks like there is some corrosion?? But how can that happen, if all moisture indicators are white and everything else works flawlessly?
Any thoughts?
Alleged Water damage?
did the device go near any water?
If not...
Audio drivers.
Factory Reset
the corrosion from the pictures looks like from Heat...
because that deep in the phone, being water damage would destroy the whole thing...
all pics look alright, except the chip in the 1st pic...
but try factory reset first..
I mean your device got diagnosed from phone, inaccurate...
Hi, thanks for the swift reply.
Before I sent in the device, I had already tried pretty much everything. Factory reset (the device was on Stock Rom so it can't be the drivers), FW - Update (from 2.3.7 to 4.0.x and back).
According to my friend, he never let it get in contact with water. Also, if I am not mistaken, the moisture indicators are still white as they are supposed to be. The repair service also didn't mention anything specific, just water damage .....
If you talk about the chip at the bottom. I don't really know but it seems like ... glue or something? Seeing all those posts from users with the same "water damage" response it seems like they (samsung/datrepair) just want to screw us customers -.-

in that case their reply means that they just dont want to repair it and there is nothing i can do? ....
EDIT:
anyone from Germany around who knows what to possibly do? like is there any samsung certified electrician that i could contact? as it doesn't seem to be a water damage
no one? quite desperate at the moment

Don't trust those guys at the service center, take it to another place.
The first pic does look nasty, now I'm scared my device looks like that.
Reminder: Do not check out my device hardware.
Okay, so...that's not water damage, just don't trust those guys
BTW, headphones/earphones makes a scrappy noise? It really does sound like software related rather than hardware related.
But again, what the hell do I know.
Problem is, I don't know where else to take it.
Person from another forum said that it looks more like a problem with air humidity or steam .... but I have no idea how that could have happened.
Going to call the service once again. I dont expect much though. its really frustrating

OMG , please help!! I am afraid my xda thinks my headset is in my device while it is in fact not. I found this in another topic
There's another thing which has happened to people: it appears the connector for the headphones isn't all that sturdy, so after a while the device thinks the connector always stays in. Not sure that would explain this behaviour, but just thought I'd mention it.

Has anyone found a solution for this?
You tried a soft reset? A hard reset? If that doesn't fix it, then you have a hardware problem.
tried it, it didnt work. Now it started acting normal today out of the blue, so i am happy, but still afraid that it will happen again.
This is a hardware problem then. There's a slim chance you could fix it using a contact cleaning spray, if you're comfortable opening the device. You can also exchange it under warranty, or have it repaired by a third party such as Pocket PC Techs.
Hmm,...I am thinking about getting it repaired under warranty then. Response time at o2 isnt very high however.
I can only barely hear whomever I talk to, why is that? It all started when I installed a custom ROM on my X10 Mini. A reboot or turn off didn't help it. I fail to see why a software can cause hardware not to function as it should.
I have tried cleaning my phone in SEUS, but it didn't help it; my problem persists. I have no screen cover whatsoever and the little hole for the earpiece is not clogged with dust and what-not. What should I do? Is there anyway I can make it work again WITHOUT replacing it? I haven't got a dime to repair it for and I bought it in February '11.
I tried flashing stock firmware, but it didn't help it. I contacted the developer of the ROM I'm using and he says he's never heard of that problem before. I'm the first one to have it.
Surely, a software cannot make a hardware not working? If it's broken, then how on earth has that happened? I have never dropped it.
such things happen quite often its most certainly not software related.
put it on your heater in your rom, let it lay for a while when the heater is warm, try to make a call if it works then you most likely have a cold solder point in the microphone. you could try to open it up if you know how to solder and just reheat pins around the microphone if not i wouldnt suggest doing it
How could this have happened? Do you think I may have exposed it to too much cold?
It comes like this from the factory, you cant do anything about it. If its a cold soldering all it takes is one drop or the phone getting warm and cooling off. The point will start to diisconnect sooner or later.

So in order to fix it, I need to replace the earpiece? These god damned smartphones makes me wanna go back to dummyphones. I remember this old K700i of mine. I could drop it and even on purpose throw it in walls or the floor without anything breaking it. But smartphones break as time passes. Where's the good old quality gone?

You dont need to replace. Btw this can happen tooo all electronic devices. Of course depending on the qualtiy of the soldering.
However dissassembling it and reheat the solder point usually does the trick. If you know how to do it or maybe somebody you know can do it for you. Theres a big chance you only need to solder the pin around the speaker.
I wish you luck

Hi there mate! Did you find a solution to your problem? I have the exact same problem and i'm thinking about taking the damn thing to the Sony ericsson technical support.
Hi all
Some how my S3 has become water damaged and the neither the speaker or haptic keys work. I've opened it up and there#s some burn on the pcb.
What do you think my best solution is? (It was bought in August). I don't have insurance on it, and I've rooted it.
Many thanks

If you can, the first step I would think, would be to make use of triangleaway to resent binary counter. Then you could try speaking with Samsung directly. No guarantee that they would do anything however.
Are you sure the phone is completely dried at this point? No residual moisture causing any problems? Could try the bag of rice for a day to leech any possible remaining moister to see if it improves, although not likely if it has burns.. but might be worth a shot.
Hello,
My friend has problems with her SGS3. It's about 1 year old and it started restarting and turning off itself. Sometimes it's on a keypress, sometimes while charging and something it just went off without touching anything. She sent it to repair and they said that there is some damage on motherboard from water (but it was never wet so it's weird) and it's glass is broken (it felt on the floor and broke a few days after buying), but the screen and touch digitizer work fine.
Since the repair is more expensive than new device, she wants to check if there is some software problems before giving it to someone who can try to fix it. The phone is not rooted, so is there any easy way to check its logs (some app or something)? Is it even possible without rooting?
In case of hardware problems, what should she do now? If the mainboard is broken and the glass is broken too, it's almost impossible to sell it for parts because only battery and soem minor parts are usable. Is it worth repairing the motherboard?

Isn't that the USB port? Looks like it's already fried. From the looks of it, the service center is right it's a hardware problem and for them to say that the motherboard is broken probably means other components are also fried. In my opinion it's better to buy a new phone as a repairing it outside warranty is much more costly than buying of a new phone.

Yes, it looks like USB port. Maybe something is fried, but the phone works so all chips and electronics must be okay. They said that there is corrosion on the motherboard. The phone was never wet but it can be due to condensation or humidity. I have a friend who told me that he can fix it if there is only little corrosion, but before trying, I would like to take a look on logs if there is some software problems. Another friend told me to wipe and flash original kernel and ROM from fresh, but I don't think that this is a smart move since the port could be broken and we could brick the device if it lose connection during flashing.

I see... so the phone still works. That type of damage is probabaly because of humidity like what you suspect. In my opinion further use of the phone with an existing hardware problem can lead to a more bigger problem so no logs can be of help here. That fried usb port can also hinder on flashing a new rom like what you said as it may fail during the flash that can corrupt the internal memory of the phone. I think your friend's options are only two. Have it repaired or just buy a new one.
Yes it works but it's barely usable. It's blocking (getting stuck) and restarting all the time. Do you know maybe how to read those logs? I never used logs so I don't know. I was googling about it but I didn't understand it well. It seems that the phone has to be rooted.
Hi guys,
I dropped my phone into the sink filled with water ( I know what I'm an idiot ) and I got it straight out and did the usual, take battery out, place in rice for 3 days etc.
Now, I've turned it on and everything is fine except the sound, when it plays any audio it has some static with it and plays it at a much higher pitch. This is also produced with headphones connected which the phone sometimes doesn't register.
Thanks a lot,I'm happy to answer any questions about it, hope I can get this fixed since I can't afford a new phone atm

As far as i understand it should be a hardware problem... But you could try factory reset or reflash device just to make sure that falling in water didn't screw something in software. Also if it is possible get someone with knowledge how to open a phone to clean all internal parts from salts and oxides.
ThanKs for the reply, I don't think its a software problem because its still consistent when running with safe mode. Should I attempt to stick it in rice or something before completely voiding the warranty by opening it up ?
Oh and sorry I forgot to mention, pressing down on the metal plate on the back seemed to work as a temporary fix but now it no longer does anything.

You can always try to take it to repair center and hope, that the water damage stickers inside hasn't worked and changed their color. BTW build of this phone is almost watertight and ports and back cover are only places for water to enter, so damage should be relatively small.
The sticker is red at the back, I think that means its been touched by water any other options ? I might still go to the repair centre and try my luck.
