Hi all,
I've got an unbranded non JB stock rom SG3 for what I think is broken. When I perform a full charge cycle (100%) in an online state the battery drain is horrible, phone gets hot and battery charger is reduced by 1% every 2 minutes or so.
But, when I shutdown the phone, 100% charged and completely offline/off, it also discharges so the next day my battery has 0% juice in it.
As I said, it's a stock rom with only juice defender installed. No apps that could drain the battery of the phone.
I must say that it feels like it became after the last update Samsung pushed to the phone.
Any suggestions before I take the thing to the KPN business center? I've got the feeling my battery is fubar but why does it got worse after the update.
Regards,
Korny

Probable battery drain = Juice Defender see multiple posts .
Drain when off usual is battery not holding charge .

I installed Juice Defender while the drain already occurs. But, the second thing you write should indicate that the battery is broken, isn't it. I will drive to the KPN business center for a replacement.
Tnx for your comment, really appreciated.

I recently bought this battery: http://amzn.com/B002MRA8FQ
However, it doesn't seem to last longer at all compared to the stock battery. I thought that maybe I needed to drain it fully and then recharge it the whole way before it would work properly, but I noticed that it was reporting 1% life left for a good hour or so before I gave up trying to drain it. Is it possible that the battery life isn't being detected properly since its not the stock battery or is there something else going on that it lasts exactly as long as the stock battery?
as i read the article, it doesnt apear to be an original LG battery...did u ever thought that batteries are not all about XXXXmAh? More is not always better
Think of cars... an american car(ex Ford Mustang) has an 4000cm3 engine producing 200Hp . Subaru has an 2400cm3 engine producing 300hp
But i could be wrong
Cheers !
You can try wiping battery stats
How do I go about wiping the battery stats? I'm using the stock rom BTW
You need a custom recovery (root your phone first)
You can gohere if you are unfamiliar with these terms
You can do it without custom recovery if you are rooted. Use either Battery Calibration app or Root Toolbox app. Both available in the market.

ye market has a few tools to calibrate your battery for you
calibrated
So I've rooted and calibrated the battery... but it seems that it hasn't changed anything. It is weird that an extended battery twice the size of the original lasts exactly as long (or less) than the original battery
Charge your battery to full, 100%, then wipe battery stats, and allow your battery to DIE. Then your problem should be fixed. i went through the same problem, i bought a special battery with better battery life and my Optimus t, running at 806/480 on smartass governor can run for about 4 days without dying, and thats with constant use

mah DOES matter!
Battery life is dictated by the mah and how you use your phone. It sounds like the battery you received is defective which happens when you buy them from sites like ebay or amazon. Is there a return policy or warranty on the battery? You should definitely get more talk time and standby time with an extended battery.
It is a common misconception that you have to let the battery drain all the way. These are li-ion batteries which prefer a shallow discharge. Meaning, they prefer to be charged when they are at about 25% capacity.
Best of luck to you!

So true. The closer they remain to fully charged the longer they last.
So I was one of those who was finding my battery life to not be sufficient on the Photon and bought the Seidio extended battery. First thought is that it does make the phone heavier, but I can deal with that. Not a deal breaker.
My issue is that the Photon doesn't recognize the fact that I now have the extended battery. I've spent the last two days using Battery calibration software (charging overnight to 100%) and then trying to discharge completely and recharge. The problem is that the phone continually is showing 1% for almost 3-4 hours if not longer. I can't get it to recognize that there is more juice in there.
While it's great that it seems to be working well (first real work day with it today), having the battery drain like mad (or seemingly) and then sitting at 1% for half or more of the day and not knowing when it will die is a problem.
I wonder if this is why the stock seemed to drain so quickly - maybe it's a programming bug? Firmware bug? I dunno. In any event, any suggestions on how to make the phone actually see that there's more juice would be great.
As an FYI I've used "Battery Calibrator" - both of them and Battery Drainer and Fast Discharge to get the phone down. I am rooted, but everything is stock other then the root itself.
Thanks!
Rumor has it, that the latest software update decreases battery life. I have the latest update, (I understand that many have this issue updating, if you do, look it up in the forums, you will need to SBF the first version of software to your phone...), and my battery life could be a lot better, like it used to be.

Well the issue now with the new battery isn't so much battery life. With the extended battery the life is stellar. This issue is that yesterday at about 3 in the afternoon the phone showed 1 percent battery life. Yet it didn't ever die. When i plugged it in last night before going to bed, at 1200, I still had 1 percent. So the issue is that the phone isn't properly recognizing the battery life itself.
Help?

I understand that you have used the battery calibration application, try installing CWM, ClockworkMod, after you root the phone. Drain the battery, charge to 100% boot up into CWM, and go to advanced, and clear battery stats...
If that doesn't work, then I could be the battery, or the phone itself. See if any other members have any insight.
Can't change bootloader on photon without breaking 4g as far as I know. Will crosspost in main photon forum. Thanks!

Hi All,
i am using a non rooted SGS2 in india. its running on the latest android firmware 2.3.6 (waiting for ICS.. )
the problem i am facing is that from past few days i see my battery drains very very quickly.. even if there is nothing running in background. i am using juice defender ultimate.. i guess its not helping either..
also it takes like forever to charge up.. i mean i plug my phone for charging at 17% after 2 hours it just reached to 21%..
at times while charging it through the USB.. it seems to be discharging.. it was at 37% after some time its reduced to 29%..
Also my phone heats up a lot for unnecessary reasons..
has any one faced this issue? please help...

first of all what programs run in background of your device?
second, what battery you use ? (1650 mAh 2000 mAh)
have you looked at your battery if the battery is working 100% or if the battery is damaged?
what rom is running on your device, which kernel do you use?
Could happen from rom. Here in germany the official 2.3.6 update was cancelled because of problems containing battery drain und reboots. Perhaps same stock rom problems in development.

i think your battery is gone. Maybe try charging it with the phone off or something. and if it it goes to 100% u can try download the battery calibration app on market to calibrate it properly. I would try everything i can before sending it back to samsung.
sounds like hardware problem mate, the phone should warm up when plugged but it shouldn't be above 35°C or so, and the slow charge problem could be related
if you can get another battery to test it out, or just buy a new one
good luck
You could try to reset your battery stats before going out buying a new battery.
thanks guys for your suggestions..
i uninstalled some of the crappy apps that i never used.. & voila my phone is back to normal .. less heat up.. battery lasts for 1 day.. hope it stays that way..
waiting for ICS..
@jeroensk - how can reset my battery stats..?
Clear battery stats boot to cwm recovery >> advanced wipe battery stats
But you will need a cwm and rooted phone ..
As battery stats do not need wiping dont worry about it battery automatically calibrates itself .
Some muppets think wiping battery stats actual does something . |It does not play any part in charging the battery or battery life on SGS2 .
jje
First and foremost...lets get this out of the way..if u want more battery life..get a newer more powerful battery...thats the best option..
But if you still wanna stick with your current battery and still want improvements..here is a little something i want to tell you..
Obviously you might have searched about how to improve and come across the method known as calibration.. this is the method as described by one of our members..
nickrule1896 said:
Steps:
1. Before flashing a new rom, use root explorer (with read/write set) to delete the file "batterystats.bin" stored in /data/system/.
2. Charge your phone with it being turned off.
3. After it is fully charged(100%), take out its battery without plugging off the power supply.
4. Wait for a few moments, and a ? sign will appear.
5. Put your battery back in. You should see that the battery percentage increases quickly to 60%. If it increases to 100% with seconds, please skip to step 6.
6. If it stops increasing at 60%, let the phone continue to charge until 100%(takes quite a while)
7. Once it reaches 100%, let it charge for a further 15-20 minutes.
8. Once that's done, you can boot to OpenRecovery and flash your rom!!!
Alternative way of calibration(thanks a lot zeppelinrox!!!):

This method allows you to calibrate the battery and use ur phone at the same time!!!

This method..simply put is useless...
If you dont believe me...then read this post..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460553
and subsequently read this post by Google Engineer Dianne Hackborn(funny surname i tell u) and you'll finally believe Battery calibration is just a myth..unless ofcourse you dont believe you know more about Android than the people who designed it
https://plus.google.com/u/0/105051985738280261832/posts/FV3LVtdVxPT
As is mentioned.. "It has no impact on your battery life" !!!
So...BATTERY CALIBRATION IS JUST A MYTH!!! Still...if you dont believe me..continue following your stupid practices..
Coming onto bump charging...
When your phone shows u fully charged it is actually charged only till 90-95% and thus u may experience a sudden decrease in battery %age after u unplug the charger...
The method for bump charging as you ardent ritualists may already know is as follows..
" Phone on, charge to full
Shut Phone off, charge to full
Phone back on, charge to full, use like normal. "
The main disadvantage of this is that it increases your battery voltage...Also in some case of sudden overvoltage while charging this can damage your battery...what for? 5% increase...
also..all that extra heat is bad for the lithium batteries...
Therefore 95% battery is good enough for daily use
so..if you really want to improve battery life...dump all these methods and just buy a more powerful battery and give it a month to give you proper results..all new batteries require at most a month to work to their full potential...
P.S. : come to think of buying a new battery...this idea may be very helpful to you if you do happen to own a Galaxy NOTE..

The fact that the Galaxy Ace cannot work without the battery already proves the first battery calibration invalid for most .
Also , all we knew was to erase batterystats.bin and charge to full , that's it

If this is all a myth, and I'm none the wiser, why is my battery percentage all over the place? For example, went on a hike listening to music etc. Ran the battery out. Got home, plugged into charger, turned on and it said I had 46% though when I first plugged it (while off) the battery symbol showed obviously barely anything.

Android is very....insensitive when it comes to battery .
Android keeps track of the battery using a permanently running Battery Service , which polls at a certaon interval....
For our phone , deep sleep will affect battery polling and thus your battery will be displayed as being larger than it really is .

Heyy guys I have a problem regarding the battery life on my fone
On any rom be it cm7 cm9 or cm10 whenever i charge my fone to say for eg. 65-70% and unplug the charger battery starts draining quickly until it reaches a particular point like (45-50%) then the drain becomes somewhat stable
However when i charge the phone fully (ie.100%) the battery depreciates economically (like on stock)
This means I have to charge the battery full in order to prevent for drain
What should i do to prevent this from happening? Or should I buy a new battery
Any Help Appreciated
In my experience with any lithium battery not just android increase battery life by let it die fully so it wont turn on at all then charge till 100% and no harm done by leaving an extra 20 mins leave charger in while turning on should vastly improve an older battery

I am afraid you're wrong in letting old batteries to drain completely man...when battery is new like say within 150 cycles what you said is true but as it becomes old it's better to charge it when it goes below 15...coz the chemicals will become inactive and won't be efficient in taking up charge

All I know about Li-ion batteries is that when I dismantle them the real lithium strip inside reacts with the air and decomposes :/
I give up writing anymore signatures.

What about Die Hard Battery Caliberator? Got me rid of bump charging.
Hey guys..
I noticed something weird on my galaxy s3. Whenever i charge my device till 100% and take it off from charger, it goes down to 99% immediatly. I thought it could be a bug in my current rom so i flashed another one. But the buf still exists. I even changed kernels. Still same problem. I am running latest foxhound rom
+franco r5 kernel right now.
Is there any solution for this bug?
Hope someone can help me.
Best regards
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
It is not a bug, that's how it is made.
If the phone charged to 100% and sat there for a long time, the battery would lose charge cycles and life faster. So what it does, is one of two things:
It will either NEVER actually charge to 100%, or
It will charge to 100%, take itself off the charger to about 95%, and then charge again to 100%, over and over.
HTC does the second one, I think the S3 does the first.
Thanks for the answer.
I didnt know that. Its just so weird because on every of my previous phones the battery stayed on 100%.
But anyways thanks

I know, I don't like it either haha. Some phones will even say "100%" right off the charger even if they're not actually at 100%, which is why sometimes you see people that take their phone off the charger at 100% and a few minutes later they are at 95, etc.
There have been a lot of questions about this in sammy roms, and also in the s1. And it got me thinking about it this way.
As soon as you disconnect the phone from the charger it's dropped to 99%. But in my head, I say it has had to have even used the most minimal amount of juice and is 'technically' no longer at 100%.
Some are saying other phones are reporting batteries on 100% for up to an hour after disconnecting from the charger. That might look great, but there is no way that is correct either, because it has to have used some juice in that hour.
Maybe samsung don't like pandering to the needs of the masses re battery use reporting. Maybe sammy is the only one reporting a correct level.
Me, I don't care. My phone lasts just fine. Are you getting better battery life than your last phone? Haven't I read that the 1x has ordinary battery life? Does it's percentage stay at 100% for a long time? If so, that would be a bit of a rip off to me.
I know sammy have included the option to show the battery percentage within the settings of the s3. I don't use it, and my battery indicator stays at 100% until the battery reaches about 90%. Works for me.
Batteries never charge to 100% anyways to avoid the battery over-charging and exploding
