WIpes - HTC One X+

So when I am preparing to rom my phone, I obviously have to wipe. Where can i store things on the phone so as not to get wiped and what do I need to wipe before roming and flashing boot?

When you're flashing a new ROM, it is recommended that you do the following things:
Factory Reset/Wipe Data
format /system
Wipe Dalvik Cache
If you would like to make sure you don't lose anything as a result of these wipes, you really should just back it up to your computer to be 100% sure it will be safe, but the phone's Internal Memory should stay intact between wipes. This is basically the phone's internal SD card (sort of).

So when I download a Rom I want to be flashed such as teamvenoms in this case, what directory should it be in? I think my issue has been I was drag and dropping them onto my media device (phone) in windows. But this foesnt explain losing my os when flashing a recovery.

I don't know anything about losing your OS when flashing a recovery, but that sounds like quite an issue that you should probably resolve before going forward with flashing any roms (a bad recovery could be a huge headache for you in the future).
In order to install the rom you just need to store it on your phone's internal memory, which is the media device that shows up when you plug it into windows. Then you can boot into recovery, select the option to install a custom zip (or something like that, not looking at it right now) and find the zip file that you put on your phone.

Came a little closer to the issue. With cwm i can see all my downloaded files including the Rom I'm looking for but in twrp literally all my directories are empty (or it shows them as such) and it says I have no os then flashing back to cwm it's all still there. ???

why not stick with CWM then?

Viper Rom requires twrp. Is there another Rom that you would suggest for att that is comparable?

Formating system is an unnecessary step, almost all ROMs wipe system during the flash so its redundant to do so
Plus if the ROM has asserts to prevent flashing a incompatible ROM it would continue to flash anyway. And could result in a brick on certain devices

Complete Phone Format

Guys,
Over time in flashing roms, playing with different apps, etc. I've built up a bunch of junk on the phone and there are certain items I'm not even sure are safe to remove.
What is the best way to go about completely formatting the phone and starting fresh. Just format the SD card then boot into CWM and factory reset and then flash my ROM again? Will that take me back to a completely fresh install and clean SD card?
I did a search and most results were about cleaning things up for a ROM flash but I'm really trying to totally remove all the junk I don't use anymore. I have all my data backed up on the computer so putting it back won't be a problem. Thanks!
Jamie
Yeah that should do it. But be careful, I may be wrong, but if you wipe your SD card, wouldn't you loose recovery too? Considering the clockworkmod folder would be wiped? Can someone clarify?

Recovery is kernel dependent, so no. The only concern in wiping the sd is deleting nandroid backups, which you can backup manually on a PC before clearing the sd. I assume the OP is going to take the appropriate measures to backup the files he/she wants.

I've read, but not attempted, that the only way to do what you want is to reflash a stock rom and do a master reset from inside there.
Another recommendation was to unmount/format the SD.

I put nandroids and any files I need to flash on my external sd, then wipe, factory reset, wipe caches, and then format sd. Then I can flash the ROM and other files from the ext sd.

I've had this same question for a while, posted sort of before but no answer. So what is the safe way?
How to keep nandroid backup and titanium backups.
I'd just move all my stuff to external_sd or a usb flash drive otg (what's that mean anyway? )
Can phone go into download mode from usb otg flash drive? What would I need on there?

[Q] AOKP ROM hard Locks / Freezes 05-01-12

I'm getting hard locks when using the latest AOKP. I'm going to try to use the 4-28-12 to see if the same issue occurs but what would cause a hard lock? It occurs frequently and seemingly randomly. I have to hold the power button down to reboot.
I've tried using different kernels as well (Neak and Siyah) but doesn't make a difference. I haven't made any special adjustments to the system voltage or other settings.
When doing installs I used Factory Wipe and cleared cashes and even used a kernel cleaning script. I don't get a hard lock or any total ROM freezes when using SHOstock2, just the latest AOKP. I'd much rather use AOKP over SHOstock2 because of the customization.
Any ideas? Anything I can try to do to test for causes? Any special apps I can run to get error logs? Thanks for your assistance.
Have you tried format /system?

If you mean factory data wipe in cwm yes. If not then no and I'm not familiar with a system format option.

Reboot to CWM Recovery>Mounts and Storage
It will wipe everything, so you'll probably want to copy everything on your SD onto your computer first.

Okay. I'm trying 4-28-12 again now. So far so good. Usually the hard lock doesn't take too long to occur. But once i'm able to backup the SD I'll try a system format.

What wipes what in TWRP?

since the HOX+ has the 64gb of unpartitioned space (between phone and sd storages), would doing a factory reset wipe the "sd card" and all my downloads/media/etc that is under /sdcard? i wanna wipe for a new rom, but dont wanna lose all my backups and titanium-backups. and i REALLY don't wanna have to backup my entire phone before and after every rom flash. can anyone help? thanks

Depending where you live I still recommend CWM. But the thread states what should be wiped. (I do not have twrp on my phone). I believe factory reset is fine, keeps data. You need to wipe system and factory reset if the new version is the same as it was before. Wiping data IS NOT what you want, as you will then need to sideload a rom and from the sounds of it that is hit and miss.

I really don't care for non touch recoveries, since I've always used twrp (kindle fire, HOX, etc). But the HOX had phone storage and internal storage, which were two diff things. I'm just making sure I don't wipe the wrong thing, and have a phone Rom-less and recovery-less

Well follow that guidline assuming you are non US/Telus. Otherwise cwm is the only one with off charging working

I understand that off charging doesn't work, but I'll live with it (viper+ has a wipe option in the aroma installer that only wipes the system) and I think I'll be with viper for a while

[Q]I want to completely wipe my phone. Ofc recovery must stay on my phone. s3 INT.

Hello, i have a galaxy s3 i9300.
I have rooted my phone tryd out many roms and kernels. I had siyah kernel but switched to an other kernel, i had dual boot with the siyah kernel. And the 2nd rom files from dual boot are still on the phone, i tryd formating system etc, wiping caches, wiping dalvik, factory reset.
I just want complete wipe, all personal stuff can wipe to music etc. IDC just that my phone is like brand new and i can start over.
Can you help me guys?
Simple, format external sdcard and internal sdcard, format system partition in recovery, wipe cache and data (factory reset ) .
What I am talking about is formatting in recovery, after you formatted 2 sdcards, system, data and cache.
You now can:
1. Pull out external sdcard, insert it into card reader or other external sdcard capable devices, copy stock ROM , flash it, done
2. Simply use sideload in recovery to flash new stock ROM.
3. Odin, I don't have explain any further, do I?

I'm trying to do the same thing. I'm currently running on Cyanogenmod 10.1 NIGHTLY Build and want to revert back to Stock ROM in order to return my phone for technical audio jack problems. Basically I don't want to trigger the flash counter, does the sideloader option do that?

Count is only for Odin, not recovery.
So do what I said and avoid Odin way, or use Mobile Odin which doesn't increase count
Sideload just as normal as you use recovery to install, except the zip file isn't stored in your sdcard but be pushed from computer by using adb command

My external sd card doesnt need a wipe. I also dont need the stock rom i just want my device clean. There is 9 gb in the path "0". So is it possible to not wipe my extern sd card and put rom in it what i can install after super wipe?.
Can it be done without odin to erase all my date without erasing cwm recovery and such away? With the steps you said i needed to do.
Im scared of odin btw. I only did it once and thats when i rooted my phone. I can format my sd card in win 7 so.
Sorry a bit nooby.

Factory reset and clockwork mod recovery

Ok i am new to the rooting and custom Rom game and I have a question. In stock form if I did a factory reset, everything on my phone was wiped, music pics everything. But when using the clockwork recovery it doesn't wipe out my pics and music. Why not?

ok that makes sense, the whole folder structure is taking me a little while to grasp, since there is no sd card on the gnex and it all being internal. just wasn't sure how it was picking what information to wipe. now that being said if i should want to wipe everything. could i go into the normal settings and do a factory reset wince i am running a custom rom?
Yes u can do the normal factory reset

yes, i did hit the factory reset in recovery, i thought i had maybe forgotten to. then i changed roms and made sure, that is what made me start to wonder what is up.

Sometimes I know when installing roms it can make a legacy folder which I believe is like a clone of the original installation and sometimes the factory reset won't wipe that folder because it is "hidden". I am not sure why it does this. But I do recall someone mentioning this in the past (or something similar). I could be wrong though.
This legacy folder sounds reasonable. I do have one of those. I which has confused the crap out of me when looking for things. Maybe this is why all of my contact photos are out of sync. Now let's suppose I do a factory reset from the settings on the phone. What bad is going to happen?

if u want to wipe everything in your internal storage including data such pic, music, downloaded apps etc...you can do one thing
-by using twrp custom recovery...go to advance wipe, tick all except the last two box
-in cwm go to advance/format data...be sure not to touch the ext. card
