since the HOX+ has the 64gb of unpartitioned space (between phone and sd storages), would doing a factory reset wipe the "sd card" and all my downloads/media/etc that is under /sdcard? i wanna wipe for a new rom, but dont wanna lose all my backups and titanium-backups. and i REALLY don't wanna have to backup my entire phone before and after every rom flash. can anyone help? thanks

Depending where you live I still recommend CWM. But the thread states what should be wiped. (I do not have twrp on my phone). I believe factory reset is fine, keeps data. You need to wipe system and factory reset if the new version is the same as it was before. Wiping data IS NOT what you want, as you will then need to sideload a rom and from the sounds of it that is hit and miss.

I really don't care for non touch recoveries, since I've always used twrp (kindle fire, HOX, etc). But the HOX had phone storage and internal storage, which were two diff things. I'm just making sure I don't wipe the wrong thing, and have a phone Rom-less and recovery-less

Well follow that guidline assuming you are non US/Telus. Otherwise cwm is the only one with off charging working

I understand that off charging doesn't work, but I'll live with it (viper+ has a wipe option in the aroma installer that only wipes the system) and I think I'll be with viper for a while

Hi
I've read alot of the threads around but cant seem to find specific info that I require. I've already rooted and flashed Litening ROM 1.5, however I want to try other ROMS and read its best to wipe before some of them.
Now most of the instructions say to boot into CWM and do a data/cache wipe, can anyone tell em what does this wipe exactly?
From what I can understand the 16gb is partitioned into the "sd card" and the storage? When looking through Windows Explorer only the larger (I believe sd card" partition shows up, with download folder, CWM back ups, music, camera images etc.
Does this get wiped, or is it just apps/personalisation of the phone? I've got titanium backup and backed up all data + user data etc which can be restored, but I just want to check that music/camera images etc won't go!
Hope its not too stupid a question, cheers for any info!
My understanding is: wipe = factory reset. I hope I'm right with that assumption.

Wipes....
I got caught once when I installed cognition for the first time. The installation somehow did wipe my internal sdcard with all my stuff on it. (Although I do have backups on my PC) So it was just a pain but not serious.
But the odd thing is that all the following upgrades of the rom did not wipe the sdcard, so DG might have change the way it does the wipes.
Also if you do a factory reset either via keypad on phone with the *#... it will wipe the sdcard.
So one needs to be carefull and make sure that we have backups of the stuff we want to keep.
I find this annoying making the 16GB card internal sdcard almost behaive as temporary storage ruther than permanent.
So watch out.
thanks for both replies! still not 100% sure though, does anyone know 100% what the CWM wipe options actually wipe?
thanks again!
How about "everything"? It sets your phone back to the way it was when you first started it.

Hello all.
Recently started flashing custom Roms and I'm wondering how I completely wipe my phone so I don't get any files left from previous roms.
At the mo I'm wiping user data, cash and delvek cash and also formatting system via clockwork.
Cheers

That's all you should have to do. A factory reset consisting of wiping data, cache, dalvik (usually cleared on ROM installation anyway) and formatting system is a full wipe, as far as I'm aware. Done it many times and never have any problems.

I know what you mean... after years of flashing I always have tons of redundant crap left over.
Use this tool - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832326&highlight=superwipe
The Megawipe option is pretty full on though.. read it all carefully, make sure you have a backup (particularly of your EFS folder), and also make sure you have an Odin flashable ROM ready!
So it seems buy reading them that I'm doing a full wipe anyway.
I don't seem to be able in install roms from my external sd card so would it be a case of flashing with Odin?

Really? I can. What recovery are you using? What format is your SD card?
I'm using clockwork, and I think it's formatted in fat32

So when I am preparing to rom my phone, I obviously have to wipe. Where can i store things on the phone so as not to get wiped and what do I need to wipe before roming and flashing boot?
When you're flashing a new ROM, it is recommended that you do the following things:
Factory Reset/Wipe Data
format /system
Wipe Dalvik Cache
If you would like to make sure you don't lose anything as a result of these wipes, you really should just back it up to your computer to be 100% sure it will be safe, but the phone's Internal Memory should stay intact between wipes. This is basically the phone's internal SD card (sort of).

So when I download a Rom I want to be flashed such as teamvenoms in this case, what directory should it be in? I think my issue has been I was drag and dropping them onto my media device (phone) in windows. But this foesnt explain losing my os when flashing a recovery.

I don't know anything about losing your OS when flashing a recovery, but that sounds like quite an issue that you should probably resolve before going forward with flashing any roms (a bad recovery could be a huge headache for you in the future).
In order to install the rom you just need to store it on your phone's internal memory, which is the media device that shows up when you plug it into windows. Then you can boot into recovery, select the option to install a custom zip (or something like that, not looking at it right now) and find the zip file that you put on your phone.
Came a little closer to the issue. With cwm i can see all my downloaded files including the Rom I'm looking for but in twrp literally all my directories are empty (or it shows them as such) and it says I have no os then flashing back to cwm it's all still there. ???

why not stick with CWM then?

Viper Rom requires twrp. Is there another Rom that you would suggest for att that is comparable?

Formating system is an unnecessary step, almost all ROMs wipe system during the flash so its redundant to do so
Plus if the ROM has asserts to prevent flashing a incompatible ROM it would continue to flash anyway. And could result in a brick on certain devices
Slithered from my HTC One X+
So, long story short I think I have some internal storage issues. In a panic trying to get my phone to work I did a factory reset from bootloader. I'm S-Off but cannot get root back. When I try to run it from TWRP, it tells me it can't mount cache. I've tried full restores ... nothing...
Any thoughts?
Hit the third link in my sig-I think you'll find what you're looking for. You need to do a factory reset from TWRP, not the bootloader. If your internal storage won't mount you may need to format it via PC.

I did yet that, still had issues. I ended up flashing a sense ROM, formatting storage through that, and them reflashed.
So far, so good.

Ok i am new to the rooting and custom Rom game and I have a question. In stock form if I did a factory reset, everything on my phone was wiped, music pics everything. But when using the clockwork recovery it doesn't wipe out my pics and music. Why not?

ok that makes sense, the whole folder structure is taking me a little while to grasp, since there is no sd card on the gnex and it all being internal. just wasn't sure how it was picking what information to wipe. now that being said if i should want to wipe everything. could i go into the normal settings and do a factory reset wince i am running a custom rom?
Yes u can do the normal factory reset

Sometimes I know when installing roms it can make a legacy folder which I believe is like a clone of the original installation and sometimes the factory reset won't wipe that folder because it is "hidden". I am not sure why it does this. But I do recall someone mentioning this in the past (or something similar). I could be wrong though.
This legacy folder sounds reasonable. I do have one of those. I which has confused the crap out of me when looking for things. Maybe this is why all of my contact photos are out of sync. Now let's suppose I do a factory reset from the settings on the phone. What bad is going to happen?

if u want to wipe everything in your internal storage including data such pic, music, downloaded apps etc...you can do one thing
-by using twrp custom recovery...go to advance wipe, tick all except the last two box
-in cwm go to advance/format data...be sure not to touch the ext. card
