greetings all,
i have a new phone and unfortunately the phone came with a rom of our service provider t-mobile who but some custom apps witch can be only removed if the phone has been rooted.
of course i did some research on how to root my device but i get stuck and have no idea anymore how to root my device. i made luckily a screen capture.
could please someone help me how to root my device and send me links of file that i need during the root proces.
many thanks in advance.
Those pre-installed apps are part of your firmware, which is branded. If you want to get rid of them, flash one that isn't branded. And if you want your phone rooted too, just go with a custom-ROM.
If you need help with it, tell me what country you live in and what language you want your UI in.

you mean just instal a custom rom using odin?
This depends on your desired outcome.
Do you want a stock ROM, a custom-ROM, CyanogenMod or MIUI?

i want to use cyanogenmod or miui, i have no idea what the difference is between them but it seems to nice.
CyanogenMod is as close as you can get to the "naked" Android. It's like the nexus-series.
MIUI is like a mix of Android and iOS. Very simple, yet powerful and allows a lot of customization.

many thanks for explanation, so in my case i should probably choose for miui, so how do i get it on my phone?
First backup your data. You will have to factory reset your phone. What language is the UI in? I assume Dutch, but I'm not sure.
You can already download Odin and the Siyah-kernel (the tar version).
Edit:
Just checked your profile. ;-)
You can find ether latest MIUI on
www.miui.nl/
Tell me once you have all the files.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
i downloaded the Siyah-kernel and also download the miui rom from miui.nl.
so what do i need to do next?
You need either Odin or Heimdall. In your case I'd go with Odin, as it's simpler to use and you won't need it much. So, download Odin and get the drivers working. Close KIES competely, put your phone into download-mode (turn off, hold volume-down & home, then turn it on) and connect it while Odin is running. It should detect your device.
I'll post the further instructions once you got everything working so far.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
i am ready
When you are ready with Odin, make sure that Repartition and flash lock are NOT checked.
Auto reboot and f. reset time shall be.
Tick the "PDA" box and select the Siyah tarball. Then hit start.
When the phone reboots immediately hold volume-up and home until you are in ClockWorkMod.
Go to mounts & storage and mount the USB-storage. Put the MIUI-zip-file on your device, then unmount the USB-storage.
After that proceed like this:
Wipe data
Install zip from sd-card and choose your MIUI zip.
Wait till the installation is finished and reboot.
If your phone does not boot, go into ClockWorkMod and install again.

Thnx for the quick reply.. i found the Siyahv2.6.4.tar file, i will try tonight!
I it doesn't work I'll use the tar files from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928 to gain root..
It worked! Thank You.
After 6 our of putting all the information across the web together so i could try to root the S2 GT-9100 i got it working. So i want to give you the credits, there your post was my main lead of info to get started. I have the MIUI: Miuinl SGS2-1.12.30 Signed version installed, after i routed the phone through ODIN with: Siyah-v2.6.7. My Baseband version is still the I9100BOKJ1 (no idea what is means), but got it working now. It is a blessing, will thanks on the Miui site as well for this great piece of work. Thanks, and for the other new visitors: it works, just read from the beginning and have patient.

GingerMOD is also very close to pure AOSP. I'm actually considering going to it because it supports TV-Out via MHL, whereas CyanogenMod does not, as far as I know. Could be worth checking out for you.
use another kernel
hi it have worked for me too, but i have a question, could i use another kernel with a stock rom is this possible, im not that smart and have for the first time a smartphone the same as karamanoglu, i just got lucky to got my phone rooted, first i did a hard reset and it got in a loop by rebooting and going to the tmobile logo back and forth, so i got frustrated and decided to root it, but i dont like the custom rom and want it back to the stock rom, but am affraid it will get a brick with my luck. can i use the kernel bokg2 and with the original stock rom from samsung but still rooted and can delete the apps from samsung if i want, sory for the bad english.
Is there a way to currently root your sgs2 all from your phone? (Without a PC)
For example; Rooting +CWM>install kernel+ new rom/baseband
phone for starting base kk6/2.3.6
Just wondering. I wanted to make a powerpoint about how to root android phones, but I think each phone is so specific that a general method may not be applicable?
Also that most phones need to be flashed via PC for starters? (yes/no?)
I figured generally speaking:
1: Look for your phones model number, android version and baseband,
2: download and flash correct rom (renaming the file if necesary)
3: with phone rooted install ??? (rom/kernel/new bb/cwm or whatever)
I don't know if I can do this as a "general" powerpoint for android, but I can do it specifically for SGS2; however, not everyone has an SGS2
ideas?

I'm 99% sure that cmw needs a rooted phone to even install from rom manager but then again it actually might not ..

Please read the OP. How is rom manager working with ICS relevant to this if he's starting from KK6 GB?
Maybe mobile Odin can work but idk if you can use that without root already on the phone. I had to root mind from download mode using a pc with Odin.
Seems like a cool idea to explore.

Mobile Odin requires root.
AFAIK there's no current way to root an SGS2 without a PC. I found SuperOneClick to work just fine, doesn't require you to flash using Odin, but it does take some patience and a few tries, and a PC of course.
I could be wrong of course, please correct me if I am.
I read you can run android sdk/adb from usb stick. Just need the "final" folders installed. Any tips?
There's a method to root + install new kernel from adb cmds

I never do backups unless fresh power off then booting recovery , no rom manager ..
i just was suggesting possibly with it installed cwm can install without a pc.
the only caveat was if root access required to install it as I don't remember and can't think of any way rooting is possible without a pc EXCEPT installing a pre-rooted rom
*which is not possible on sgs2 with standard sammy recovery correct

uhhhh....
COMPLETELY different phones, COMPLETELY different hardware. NO....you cannot use rom manager for the i777 unless you are working solely with AOSP builds....in which case you would ALREADY have a CWM kernel
this has been the case on all samsung galaxy s line except the skyrocket/t989. there is no doubt that it simply DOESNT work from stock. its not speculation, its fact.
things are different over here dude. the i777 is pretty much nothing like the i727 aside from sharing a name and touchwiz....

Hey everyone,
I've successfully flashed CWM/unlocked my photon via LokiFish's excellent thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20331623&postcount=6
My question is, since I've payed for CWM in the past, can I download the update and flash newer versions or is the recovery-red-photon the only one the phone can successfully support?
Thanks in advance!
Official version doesn't work right. Actually, jokersax's version works great. You'll find a link to his site in his cm9 thread in the development section.

Jokers recovery is a flashable zip you can flash in cwm, then reboot recovery and you're set. Both work great, but if you plan on using the aroma installer that is available for some of the ics builds, you'll need jokers recovery to take advantage of the touch-based aspect of that. Otherwise, you can navigate through the installer with the volume keys and select work the camera key.

there is no premium version of clockworkmod recovery, there is rom manager and rom manager premium.. and depending on the device that may or may not be worthwhile...
i myself prefer goo manager, its free for everyone, donate 10 bucks and you get lifetime membership to skip the 10 sec wait. they provide free hosting to devs for roms, if the roms are setup properly they will show up in the goomanager app and when there is a new version will prompt users of that rom .
but yea there is no premium version of cwm, the difference between rom manager and rom manager premium is you can download certain roms (usually just the cm7/9 nightlies for official devices, ergo no impact on the photon..)

I know you can use the version of cwm it flashes in order to flash jokers recovery zip. Then you don't have to fastboot a recovery file. Beyond that, I've never really bothered with it.

rom manager
I downloaded rom manager and it does support the photon and has for awhile. When choosing to flash recovery through rom manager it picked up the photon no probably. So to answer the questions it does work and support the photon 4g. Now if we can just get Koush to make a clockworkmod touch recovery for the photon it will be all good.
Koush is giving the world access to his buildbot to test out the new version of CWM. So I decided to give it a whirl. Offers incremental backups making them much smaller and faster.
This is for ICS ROMS only

To install
1. Download file to your computer
2. In command line, navigate to the folder you have the recovery
3. Reboot phone into fastboot
4. "fastboot flash recovery recovery-CWM-6.0.0.0-ruby.img"
5. "fastboot reboot"
6. Reboot Phone into recovery as normal
Anyone test it as yet other than you? Would be cool to see this in action, good post, many of those who wanted CWM will love you for it, lol.
As far as I could tel I was the first to build a ruby version. I just pulled the 5.0.2.8 CWM and used that as a base and had it build a touch version. I tried getting it to use the stock recovery but the only one I could find was from the all-in-one toolkit and it built, but the recovery had trouble mounting points so I didn't upload it here.
I've always been a fan of CWM but that's prolly mostly because that's what I familiar with. I've used it since my G1.
So it can flash kernels???
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
It was built off of 5.0.2.8 so I would have to guess that you would have to be S-OFF to flash kernels. I am S-OFF and am the only one I know of running it.
Why is it only able to flash ics roms?

FINALLY, A FRICKING RECOVERY THAT JUST WORKS.
Jesus, I tried every recovery I could find.
I'm not mentally impaired, so I do understand (and preffer) to use fastboot, and all other recoveries either required a download of an app to do the work for you or they just plain wouldn't boot (I'm looking at you, EXT4 touch binary...)
Plus it's well documented and it's a real developer friendly recovery, not so user oriented. I love it.

or you can just flash the 4EXT recovery image from my toolkit. That is another way. 4EXT wants the app installed so it can tell you about updates and let it update by itself.

ok help?
so my question is does this allow the install of kernels with a rom not separately? Next question is if im rooted with s-off and a locked boot loader can i install this by recovery like along time ago.
Hello -
I have browsed through countless threads and obviously overlooking something for a successful root.
I was able to root using option #3 in the following thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894. All went without issue and I see the SuperUser application on the phone.
However, I cannot get into Clockwork. Holding the power buttons and power button only takes me in the typical Android reset menu.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
You don't have rom manager installed hopefully. If not, you simply power your phone off , hold down volume up down and power until it reboots KEEP holding it it may flash the boot logo more than once then it should take you into clock work mod recovery. Also keep in mind you need a custom kernel to have clockwork mod recovery installed, as our kernels have recovery built in.

Thanks for the assistance. No --- I do not have ROM Manager installed. The button sequence only takes me into the typical Android menu that has four options. Going from memory: Reboot, apply update.zip, factory reset, clear cache. It's not the Clockwork menu...I'm familiar with it.
I guess that means that the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894 only roots the phone and I need to apply a custom kernel. If so, do I have to find a custom kernel and apply through ODIN since I cannot flash through Clockwork? If so, can you give me a link on how to do this?
Thanks.

You just installed the stock kernel with stock 3e recovery. You now need to install a custom kernel. Go to this thread, which is the full directions for rooting and installing a ClockworkMod Recovery enabled kernel.
Also since you're rooted, you can flash kernels with mobile Odin if ya want, it's on the Android market. Is free to flash roms gotta pay for it to flash kernels and stuff but it's well worth it in my opinion.

Also since you're rooted, you can flash kernels with mobile Odin if ya want, it's on the Android market. Is free to flash roms gotta pay for it to flash kernels and stuff but it's well worth it in my opinion.

This. It's definitely the best way.
Thanks to everyone. I was missing the step of flashing a kernel with Clockwork mod. I did purchase mobile ODIN Pro and now able to access the menu to flash. I was used to the 1-click one stop shop utility under the Galaxy Nexus.
