ICS Roms.. Kernel question - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

In about phone section.the details about the kernel should be what's installed right, or does it just say version 3.0.8 even when flashing another kernel?

Yea thats where your kernel shud be juss dowload the kernel you want to use and flash via recovery reboot and then check again and u will see the custom kernel

i know, but roms with custom kernels normally show what the kernel is, but it's showing version 3.0.8, even after flashing a different kernel it still shows as 3.0.8. When i flash JB roms it shows the custom kernels. So wondering if it's always going to be shown as version 3.0.8 or not cause i can't tell if the kernel i flash has actually been flashed or not.

Just use CPU spy app. It shows the kernel info

Do you get the features of the upgrade kernel? For instance, custom boot animation or back light notification or over clocking? Then you got the custom kernel.
Sometimes developers forget to change the description. That just happened in Flappjaxxx build #12 kernel.

Thats odd whn i flash a kernel it shows up

Rooting By installing a custom rom

I found one thing that may help some one.. MOST of you may already know this, but there are noobs like me....
If you have an unlocked bootloader, then you can install a custom kernel which is pre rooted..
so after installing a pre rooted custom kernel , if you install the stock kernel.. the root is still there... right?

Ouf why should we switch back after flashing a prerooted kernel? Stock kernel isn't as good as custom kernel like rage kernel
But you can root without flashing a custom kernel, look in the pinned threads :good:
Normally root should stay there, if the prerooted kernel copies the root files...

Custom kernels often have a better battery life, like for example rage kernel...

[Q] What rom to use?

My phone is rooted now and few friends here gave me suggestions of siyah and some...i want to know if I can directly flash the rom from stock recovery mode..i downloaded ROM manager, but it only has clockwork mode and cyanogen i guess.. can i do that using siya?
You need CWRecovery on your phone (sounds like you used a root method that didn't involve using a kernel with CWM if you only have stock recovery). Best way to get it is to flash a kernel that has it built in - Siyah, Dorimanx, etc, etc. There's a number of them; search the development sections of the board. Once you've got CWM on, you'll be able to flash any rom you want.

Siyah is a kernel, not a ROM. And no, you cannot flash a custom ROM from stock recovery. Search for rachmat3's rooting method and use that. Or flash the tar version of siyah or dorimanx via Odin.
ROM manager seems to have some issues with the S2. try to avoid using it as far as possible.
See which ROM you want to use. If it has the new Mali drivers use dorimanx 7.4 else use siyah 4.1.5

Siyah is a kernel developed by gokhanmoral. ROM on the other hand is also called firmware, you can flash them both in clockworkmod recovery, but cannot be done in stock recovery.
As for ROM manager, I've seen people brick their phone using it, so just stick to flashing clockworkmod recovery.

Don't use rom manager, unless you want an expensive brick.
And Rootbox with dorimax is a good combination you can check out

If you are using siyah kernel you can tweak the GPU steps and overclock your CPU using an app called ExTweaks. But note you are not going to get any serious performance boost, your machine tends to be what you have.

Error status code 7 when flashing ROMs usually means the install script failed an assert when trying to determine if you have the correct model of phone that the ROM is intended for.
Where did you download the copy of CM10.1 from? Are you sure that it is for your model of phone? According to your signature, you have an I9100. Are you sure you didn't download CM10.1 for I9100G, for example?

This is because your likley using Philz kernel for leaked JB.
To flash other custom roms you will need to change kernel back to a previous ICS or JB kernel like Siyah.
Flash the kernel (.tar version) via ODIN/Mobile ODIN.

Thx, I didn't know this about Philz... Mainly because I'm avoiding JB until Samsung releases an official version.

But I'm not using philz kernel, I never flashed it..
I just flashed this leaked firmware few days back.. That's it!!
Anyways, but most of them say to not use siyah kernel with cm 10.1... Rather use dorminax kernel with it, what you say about it?

Hey
Flash dorimanax but don't boot and then flash cm10.1

Flashing new kernel how todo know if its safe

As the title says, I've used siyah vsync previously on my rom recently updated it and don't know if it still work with it, in case it's not compatible anymore would I lose recovery or brick my phone?

Hi,
it would be good to know which rom you are using. If you are not sure siyah kernel runs with your rom, check the version and look in the siyah thread if it runs with it

If the kernel is incompatible with the ROM, you wouldn't be able to boot. But recovery and download modes should still be accessible.
But if the kernel is incompatible with your device, you could end up with a bricked phone!

Kernel with dual boot and support for stock rom?

Title says it All.. Is It possible to run stock rom and a custom rom with the same kernel? Thanks!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
ctsinges which
I think it won't work. You have to look at siyah or dorimanx kernel, they can handle sammy and for example cm. But you have to check if the dualboot function will work for two that different roms, I don't think so...
