I posted this in the big 3.0.4 thread, but thought this might merit its own thread w/o hijacking that one....
I upgraded to 3.0.4 last night and my Touchstone suddenly stopped charging. I know it was the update because I had it resting on it the entire time. On 3.0.2 it was a-ok, but once it finally rebooted into 3.0.4... nothing. I have the HP OEM case. This morning I finally took it out of the case, and sure enough, the Touchstone works.
There are a few threads on other sites of people having the same issue. It sounds like the update decreased the sensitivity of the induction doo-dad (technical term) to increase the accuracy of the compass (apparently the TP has one...), and in the process borked the Touchstone charging for just about any case, although some people report the Touchstone still charges with the HP case.
Does anyone know of a workaround? Or is a patch possible outside of another HP update? I really don't care about the compass. It sounds like some of the other people affected are awaiting responses from HP, but who knows if they'll fix it.
ps. On a side note, does the Touchstone still work in CM7?
Just put mine onto the Touchstone, and it is charging it with the case on (I have the HP case).
Mine charges in the HP case as well but not if the case is folded over. I used to be able to charge it with the case cover folded behind. This is really stupid b/c who is really using the compass feature, hardly anyone (including myself) knew it was there.

I have the touchstone and the HP case, I find that it's more finicky about where it is on the Touchstone to charge, just slide it to the left a bit in landscape and you'll hear the charging tone. The charging grid is towards the Center button, not in the middle of the unit. Shame that the case doesn't fold back as nicely on the stand in portrait mode (but it charges just the same).
And fwiw, I have my HP BT keyboard booklet, the microfiber wipe, behind the tp inside the case.

Lucky! It sounds like it's just really finicky now with the supposed lower sensitivity. I've tried moving TP around on the Touchstone and smashing the case down more when I fold it, etc, and didn't have any luck as long as the case was still on. The "reach" of the inductive charger must be right at the limit now and, of course, I'm sure depends on a lot of other factors.
You could try running WebOS Doctor and doing a clean install:
http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/WebOS_Doctor_Versions
Did you have any preware patches installed before running the update?

Ok, thanks. I've never used Doctor before, but I may have to try that. I'm still hoping there's some update or patch to revert this behavior.
I did have the typical preware patches installed before this (for the logging, etc). I reverted back to the stock kernel before the update. I haven't tried messing with Preware again after the update.
I did the update and it failed. So I webosdoctor'd it...now it won't even charge sitting on the Touchstone naked! LOL
I played around with it a little more last night. It will charge if I put my TP on the TS in the cover but w/o folding the flap behind it (rather, just letting it lay out in front). It used to work with it folded behind too. This sucks, but I guess it's something for now.
I am having the same issue Touchstone no longer works on my touchpad after update.
Also of note I had the touchpad ON the touchstone while making the update.

Same here. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Do you have any case on the TP?
Would it be possible to tweak the touchstone induction back to 3.0.2 levels via a patch in preware? I was hoping one of the unofficial kernels might be able to.
My touchstone seems to work. For both webOS and for CM7.
My TouchPad charges fine after the latest update even with a Poetic Folio case that is much thinker than the official HP case.
Alright, well I've had my Prime for a while and it works wonderfully. I've been going around flashing ROMs and having fun with it. One day (today actually), I went to charge my little toy... and it wouldn't charge. I go to shut off the screen and attempt to plug it in. The screen does not turn on. (Which is usually what happens when plugged into the charger.)
NOW WAIT. Before you're like this guy's a noob, why the heck is he posting in this section when he should be pulling apart his charger and putting the piece back on? *sigh*
That's because it has nothing to do with the charger. It's in nice condition. It has to do with... well... maybe you should take a look for yourself. Make sure to zoom in, it's a pretty high quality photo.

Onward, as you can see, the thing needs repairs, the problem is I cannot find the stock ROM that it shipped with. If I want repairs, I need to go back to boring pedestrian stockville. Another thing, IT WON'T CONNECT TO A COMPUTER. In other words, if there's a stock RUU for it, that's not gonna work. Is there anyone out there with stock with a pretty fast download speed?
Because at the moment I only have 37% battery left. Currently running Virtuous Prime.

I would guess they are going to blame you for that damage and charge you to fix it anyway so you are fine to leave the rom you have. Furthermore, there is no way to conceal an unlocked device, when you unlocked they put your serial number into the database.
I had the same thing happen to mine and they repaired it for free.
So there is seriously no point in jumping back onto the stock bandwagon? Did you have a Custom ROM on your device when you sent yours back sillk?

Since I am fairly sure it is not possible for a custom ROM or any ROM for that matter to mangle your connector pins like that, I doubt that whether or not you have unlocked you device will factor into Asus' decision to charge you for the fix. My guess is it will depend on who looks at it and if they feel charitable or not. If they decide to make you pay I will be because they have determined it to be CID (Customer Induced Damage).
Alright, thank you.
Hey guys,
I went out on a limb and bought the OWL car charger+dock for my DNA.
There is a bunch of discussion on the item here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029734 along with plenty of pictures.
I wanted to let you guys know some specifics for the DNA:
1. The phone fits perfectly into the clip. I don't have any cases, so I can't test that, but naked the phone fits like a glove and is very secure, even upside down.
2. Even the "second generation" of charger still does not put out enough juice for the DNA, even with the phone at idle.
I have emailed Moon and will update this thread when I hear back from him. I am thinking the problem might have something to do with the controller inside the charger. It switches to red (charging) momentarily when the phone is inserted, but then switches back to green (full).

Update 1: Moon has emailed back already to assure me that if the charger doesn't work, he will do what it takes to make it right.
I am hoping we can figure out a way to make the phone work in the charger, since I love the design and the convenience of Qi...
awesome! I have been wondering if it works for our phone since I saw the post you linked above about a week ago. I emailed moon about it, but he was unsure. I'm glad that someone confirmed what I have been wondering. Thanks again
I'm also looking forward to more info on this. Going through the website I couldn't quite follow if it worked or not.
Update 2:
The Qi charging coil built into the CarPad does work to charge the HTC DNA, unfortunately the coil is positioned about 0.5" too low for the phone.
Moon is working on an adjustment to the circuit board to re-position the charging coil.
Tonight I am going to take a look at temperatures during charging. With the screen turned on the battery did get 3-4°C warmer than normal on the Nokia Qi charger, but it was a pretty short charge. I am going to try leaving the screen turned on and the phone charging on the CarPad tonight for a couple of hours to see the charge rate and temperature change.
Other news:
There does not seem to be any scuffing, scratching, or denting of the phone's finish caused by inserting and removing from the clip. I had worried that the spring arms on the side might hurt the matte finish on the back of the phone, but so far I don't see any changes.
Thanks guys,
Ben
thanks for the update, keep us posted. in car qi charging is very interesting.

Thanks, I got a reply from Moon that he thinks the "autopad" will be the option for the DNA and he'll let me know when it is available. I will post info here if I hear back.
http://owlpad.net/owl-autopad/
Update 3:
Good news tonight. First, I've done a temperature test using the phone at room temperature. With navigation, LTE, and the screen constantly on the CarPad provides moderage charge (+200mAh) and does not cause excessively high heat (under 45°C). This is comparable with the 43°C I saw with the Nokia Qi charger while watching a Netflix Stream.
With the screen off the temperature is also pretty normal (35°C) so I think the coil is good.
Moon at Owl Chargers tells me that he may add a little to the coil to make it more consistent on the charging, and he is going to create a new PCB that has the coil positioned 1/2" higher so that it will line up properly with the DNA.
It sounds like this change could happen pretty quickly, but I will let you know when I have the test board in hand.
Thanks guys,
Ben
Please keep the updates coming, thanks!
Hey everyone, sorry for a few days of delay.
I talked to Moon this morning and he thinks they should have the test board created by the beginning of next week. He is moving the charging coil up to line up better with both the DNA and the Galaxy S3, and he is upgrading to a bigger charging coil to presumably give better charging efficiency.
I have removed the standard charging coil from the phone holding base and have been using it as a standard desktop charger for the last few days (with the Owl-Pad supplied AC Adapter). It has been working well for that as long as I position the phone properly, so with any luck the new board should fix the problem in the car mount.
I will let you guys know when the new part ships, and will be sure to take pictures of the new versus old board.
Thanks,
Ben
Thanks for the updates.
Sudo make me a sandwich.
Good news from Moon at OWL Pad today, the new circuit board is complete, his testing looks good, and he is shipping it out to me to test on the DNA tomorrow.
I will update everyone here with pictures once I have the new board and have been able to try it out, but Moon posted some initial tests on the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 which both charge at the higher position. Those tests looked good so I have to think it will work on the DNA as well.
Thanks all,
Ben

I'm not sure how he would do that. I'm sure he has a bunch of the units already boxed up from the last production run. It might be that he has to ship the old unit and the new board separate. Honestly, changing the board was incredibly easy. There are four screws and then the old board just lifts out and the new one drops in.
When the new one comes in I had planned on putting up pictures showing how to remove the old one and install the new one.

Looks like the set is for sale for the DNA on the web page now. Still sounds like he's waiting for test results but you go through with an order now if you want.
Hey Guys,
I got the unit in the mail when I got home from work (30 minutes ago).
So far everything looks GREAT!
I am running temperature and charging tests now, but the new coil position looks perfect, and I'm getting as much or possibly more current out of the OWL charger than I was getting out of the Nokia.
Tonight I should have pictures and screen shots available from my early tests, but I have to say that everything looks great so far.
I also want to add that the level of customer service and responsiveness from Moon at OWL charging was incredible. If I got service half as good from the companies I do business with in the US I would be amazed, and these folks are having to deal with me from the other side of the world. I have absolutely no ties with their company, and hadn't even spoken to them to ask if the charger worked for my phone before I ordered, but they went above and beyond any expectations in getting this charger working.
Once I have a few hours charging I can fill in the remaining details (temperatures, approximate charge time, etc), but right now I would say the newest version is a huge success!

Thanks! Placed my order. I'm willing to give it a shot at this point!
I want to take advantage of being able to upgrade my DNA at no cost to me, so I need to do that by the end of this year. The company is switching to employee purchase of phones starting next year. I'm on Verizon. Looking for recommendations from those that have switched, or are contemplating a switch soon. I've primarily been looking at the Turbo, LG G3, and One M8. I've been on HTC devices, so am comfortable/familiar with Sense, and currently running a One based ROM on my DNA. I'm also fond of the wireless charging options, but don't know if a lack of it is enough to rule a particular phone out. Being able to root is a plus. Also leaning to a replaceable battery being a plus as well. Wife recently picked up a Note 4. I'll look at it some more, but that seems almost too big.
Is anyone aware of any new devices due out this month? If not, what is your favorite option today and why?
Thanks!
I just got the Note 4 and love it!!
Also came from the DNA and I can tell you, you'll be very pleased with the battery life!!
I was also considering the new Nexus device but since it isn't on VZW yet and I didn't want to wait with my DNA screen shattered I went with the Note 4 and I'm definitely not disappointed.
The Droid Turbo was released not too long ago, and I'm really leaning towards it for my contract upgrade in a couple of weeks. It's still an internal battery unfortunately, but what caught my attention was it having nearly twice the capacity of the DNA. Since I have to charge my DNA halfway through the day, I'd be more than satisfied with the Turbo's battery life. Plus, it has some beefy specs as well. Camera has been reported to have some trouble with delay, but that might be corrected in a software update.
I did a little more reading last night and am starting to lean towards the LG G3. A little smaller than the Note 4 which is a good thing. Replaceable battery, rootable, and with a $10 hack can be changed to Qi wireless charging. I need to go spend some hands on time with it in the store. I've considered the Turbo as well, but with the reported camera issues, and some reporting earpiece volume issues, I just find myself questioning Motorola's product testing if they send these issues out with a hope to fix them later in a software update.

Hmm, I'm now thinking about the Note 4 as well due to its camera features and the S-pen. So, when you say pleased with the battery life...how pleased are we talking? I guess getting through the day wouldn't be nearly as much a problem as it is sometimes with the DNA?

I don't know about you but toward the end of my 2 years on the DNA I'd have to plug my phone in after about 5-6hrs of moderate use or it was flat dead!
So far with the Note 4 I've actually managed 2 full days on one charge a couple times.. Keeping in mind it's a new phone so I'm playing on it a lot!
Also the fast charge is awesome! I have had it go from 50% to a full charge in about 15 minutes on the charger! (that's only using the included "adaptive fast charger" from Samsung)
The S-pen is cool! I felt like it might be one of those things that lost its "cool factor" once I played with it enough but I keep finding new useful reasons pull it out.. Easily screenshoting and cropping an Instagram post using the Screen Write function for example.
Or more obvious things like quickly jotting down a number or reminder. Which are a lot more useful and easy than I had though they would be.
The chances of getting a fully functional ROOT seem far out if it ever happens.. So that's a bit of a downside. But I can say this is the first phone I've had that I wasn't just dying to root. I honestly have very little reason to root it other than getting Lollipop before VZW and Samsung get it on the update manager.
The phone is big! I will say that.. Probably one of the only things I've had issues with is one handed typing. But I'm getting use to it. It can be very difficult stretching that thumb up to reach things with one hand but I guess that's the price we pay for a large screen. Which is a beautiful display by the way... Both cameras rock too! It's packed with fx, filters and neat camera features that are a lot of fun.
Anyway I hope you are happy with whatever you get! I did talk to a guy over the weekend who has LG G3 and he told me he "hates it" although he couldn't really tell me why.. Haha I haven't played with one but they seem pretty comparable
By the way I thought I'd share that when I got home and started typing this my battery was at 56% (after a full day of pretty heavy use) and in the time it's taken me to type this up (on the phone via tapatalk) while plugged into the fast charger I'm up to 72%
Just thought I'd share an update, in case the op might be still deciding.
I opted for the Note 4. Got it in the mail yesterday, and so far I'm very impressed! It's not as hard to handle as I thought it'd be due to its size. I have yet to give the battery a good test, gotta break it in and actually do a near full run-down, since I had it plugged in most of the day yesterday. But this display is absolutely gorgeous! Don't think I'll be using the s-pen much, but who knows, maybe I'll find more use for it further down the road. I also enjoy using the finger print scanner; I find it quicker to unlock. At times it's frustrating that it doesn't work, but that's because I'm not being precise enough.
Thought I'd share my first impressions. Thanks for the input starscream!
Guess I should've come back to update this. I wound up getting the LG G3 a week ago. Already rooted and installed Skydragon ROM and love it. I also purchased the sticker for the battery door that changes it from NFC only to NFC plus wireless charging. Battery life has been great, and I like the knock knock option for turning on the screen. Transition from my DNA to the G3 has been easy.
Appreciate the suggestions and feedback from everyone!
It is with a sad and heavy heart that I must state that my G3 died tonight while I was using it. It just shut off unexpectedly while it was charging. This was the first time this has ever happened. I can get it to turn on briefly, and then it shuts off again but there are also times where it just doesn't respond.
If I remove the battery and plug it into the charger, usually the battery with a question mark would show up to state the battery was missing. It won't even do that. That to me signals it has finally died. I'm going to miss this phone. Funny how it died the month that my 2-year-contract was up.
I'm looking at probably the Moto-Z Play Droid. I used to like Motorola products. This one has expandable storage, which is great. Hate that it doesn't have a removable battery though. But, it will bring down my monthly fees by about $3. But it sucks because my bill would have dropped $20 a month since the G3 was off contract.
I want to thank everyone who helped me through the past two years with everything here. That is especially @bweN diorD and @roirraW "edor" ehT.
Farewell fellow G3 users! We might meet up again some day.
Sorry to hear about the catastrophic failure! Take care, good luck, and hope to see you around.
happened to me also but plugging the cable while holding up button after reinserting battery got me into download mode but there was nothing on the screen same like you. after that i flashed 10b tot and it is working again. you can give it a try.
That's horrible to hear, I have been reading your and the road warrior posts as I am new to the LG G3 and your are a helpful person!!
I got my G3 off a friend as it was hard to find a non K model on swappa. I came from the horribly locked down CID 11 GS5.
Thanks for the posts you left and the responses you gave me in my short time getting acquired!

My condolences on your loss
If you're going to sell it please let us know. If it's not repairable it can parted out
& Good luck with your new gear. Hopefully the dev community is strong for whatever you decide to get :good:
It was a hard decision between the Galaxy S7 and the Moto Z. Moto Z pulled me over because it was pretty close to pure stock Android. But four things pushed me the S7:
Moto Z has USB-C, so that means I have to get all new charging cables for the car, etc.
No headphone jack. Sorry, this is a biggie. Yes, the Moto Z comes with a USB-C adapter to use headphones, but nope. Plus, my car doesn't have Blue Tooth, so I need the headphone jack.
What was a selling point was a negative for me: the add-on. Expensive, limited to the Moto Z, and stuff I really didn't need. Plus, even though they promised it would work with later models, we all know how that goes.
One more was the camera. Comparisons between the S7 and the Moto Z were no contest. The S7 takes WAY better pictures.
Of course, when I got to the store, found out I got a free Samsung VR Gear from Oculus! Awesome! Didn't even know that would happen.
As for my G3, it's toast. It just won't start up at all, so it's definitely a hardware failure. I can't even get it into download mode to try and flash 10b back on it. So, the phone has died.
It was a fun two years that I was here. Learned a lot and will miss a lot of you, but many of you have also moved on as well.
I'll lurk around still and help those who are seeking assistance with their G3s.

Yeah, I tried this. It goes into DL mode but after 30 seconds, it shuts down before I can do anything, so there is definitely a hardware failure going on. I've reseated all the connectors on the motherboard and that didn't help.
The phone is toast. Loving my S7 though right now and the free Samsung Gear VR I got with it, along with the $10/month monthly payment with no trade-in option they had over over this past weekend. That came along at the right time!
Take care fellow G3 users. May your phone last longer than mine (about 2 years). I loved the G3 and what it offered. I was even happy with it on stock.
I won't be doing anything with my S7 either other than disable some bloat (which there really isn't that much on here like the G3 has). Looks like there is a Nougat beta going on, but I'm going to stay away from that after the nasty experience I had with the 49A OTA. Might be that it didn't cause my G3 to fail, but it sure was quite a coincidence!
Try a new battery. I had a battery go bad. It's a cheap fix.

Not sure it's the battery and I've already replaced the phone. I might take it into the battery store and see if they'll let me test it with a new battery before I purchase one. Would be interesting to see if it works or not. I did try to flash it back to 10g and it got interrupted in the middle of it, so it's probably in BULK mode and right now, I don't feel like taking it apart to expose the connectors to "short" it out. Did it once, but now that I have an S7, not sure if I want to mess with it right now. But, I'll hold onto it until I'm ready to try a new battery in it.
I had a problem with my phone 8 months back . I went on craigslist and bought another used. I was lucky it had not taken an update. I rooted it without having to go back and tot it. . even better I took the battery out and put it in my old one confirming the battery was bad. now I have a backup and another battery was less then 10 bucks. hope it's your battery. I don't recall the symptoms just it wouldn't boot up full.
My experience (2 phones - mine & wife's) was that a dying batter swells up and can cause collateral damage to the phone. This happened first on my phone after about 18 months; I could see a gap where the screen was pushed up away from the bezel. At the same time a 5mm or so strip at the top of the screen became unresponsive to touch. New batteries are (were?) only $15 from LG. That fixed the bulge problem, but the touch problem remained. I got a used phone off FleaBay (was in excellent condition) for a bit over $100. About 3-4 months later, my wife's phone started to show the same bulge in the screen. New battery solved the problem; fortunately no other damage. Her phone is a bit newer than mine, so the failure was at about the same point in the life. Admittedly we're hard on batteries because we routinely stick the phones on the wireless charging pad overnight, and they tend to stay warm.
My old phone has been relegated to Pandora player duty. I don't see any thing in a newer phone that I need, and few have wireless charging and/or replaceable batteries. I'll probably keep swapping in new batteries every 12-18 months and keep them going as long as possible.
I have been very happy with my G3 over the past two years. My GF and I each have one, so we are compatible for batteries and charging, etc.
I have recently been wanting something newer and different, but without a lot of justification.
I was looking at the G6 from Verizon, $480 on plan, which is nice. But, that would have forced me off my OG Unlimited plan, which would then cost me at least $20 more a month.
I decided to try the HTC U11, since it is bootloader unlockable and they swear that the Unlocked version also works on Verizon CDMA. F'n better work.
G6 might have better screen. U11 has better camera and 2x storage @ 64GB. Hope I don't miss swappable batteries.

I'm waiting until October for Pixel 2 most likely. It would be nice to have an unlocked phone that gets support from the manufacturer in a timely manner. Plus, no Alexa and possibly a headphone jack.
I'm actually pretty sold on Alexa. I have two Echo Dots and a ton of WeMo devices, thermostat, security, etc.
I wanted the Alexa integration, to be honest.
Just wanted to give an update. S7 is still going strong on Nougat with no issues. Battery life is good for me (except when I play games which is most of the time ) and performance is great. Definitely better than the G3, but I really had no issues with the G3 performance-wise, but I can tell a difference in response on certain apps/games.
Still miss the G3 and wish I could have made it work, but it has since been retired to the recycle bin. :crying:
Now in my family, my oldest daughter and my wife have S7s as well. My daughter was the first to get it. Then me. Then my wife. Our other daughter has an iPhone 7s. Tried to get her to switch to Android, but she does have a lot wrapped up in her phone as far as music, apps, etc. Plus, she as an Apple Notebook, so in many respects, it all works for her. I just hate when she has issues with it not backing up photos and such correctly. And same with her music and trying to get it off the phone. One of the major reasons why I never went to an iPhone after seeing all the issues my daughters had with their iPods so many years back. That pretty much told me to stay away if I can't easily backup up music and files from my phone.
